I voted for Clapton...Layla
I know he isn't really on the same level as some of these guys but I have to give my tribute to Dime Bag Darrel. If any of you haven't heared Cemetary Gates, it's problem his living music legacy. Otherwise i'm goin' with Eric Clapton straight up, that fool can play anything. He's a badass like it or not.

I voted for Clapton, but Jimi is practically tied with him. I think Tom Morello should be on this list as well.

Jimi might be the greatest Rock and Roll guitar player, but Clapton can play so much more. Just listen to his variety of songs: The early ones from Cream, like Wrapping Paper and Sweet Wine, then the later Cream: White Room, Crossroads, then Blind Faith: Presence of the Lord, then Layla, then his solo stuff: I shot the sheriff, After Midnight, Knockin' on Heaven's Door, Wonderful Tonight, Promises, Tears in Heaven...I could go on and on.
Replace "The Edge" with Santana, and you have yourself a list worth talking about.

Those all rock, but being a guitar player, Jimi's stuff is so much harder, and he played his guitar UPSIDE DOWN !!! He had to use a lot of his brain and still put on an insane show!

Anyone with the name " The Edge " has to be cool, or so I thought before I found out this guy sucks. What insane lick has this guy made up to get him such a name as " The Edge "? He hasn't, this OLD guy just got himself a nickname to appeal to stupid little poser kids who would go " The Edge? What a sweet name, i'll take that CD. " Little do they realize that he is part of one of the worst bands ever. Bono and the rest of em are horrible also.

Edge should not be on this list. No way. And trey really isn't a rock and roll guitarist in my mind.
Since the question was just guitarist I have to say Jimi Hendrix but if it were overall muscian I'd go with Eric Clapton.
The Edge shouldnt even be anywhere near this list. In the time we are in now when half of the bands guitarists play chords The Edge still isnt even top 10. All of their songs sound the same. I'd much rather see someone like Jimmy Page be on their. And of course the big (underrated 3) Steve Vai, Malmsteen, Joe Satriani.
I agree with you a bit on Dimebag, I absolutely love Pantera and Dimebag. He is a great guitarist, easily one of the best of our era. But you know who could be listed as one of the best guitarists of every decade since the 60's? Eric Clapton. He can and does play anything. So he got my vote. While I love Hendrix and think he is great, he is overrated. He simply made sounds and did things that no one had before him. He was incredibly inivative. Don't get me wrong I think he is amazing, but many people have him listed as the far and away greatest guitarist of all time, easy to be a bit overrated with claims such as those.
Oh and a little known fun tidbit of information for you. Layla which is widely considered Claptons greatest song was originally played by Duane Allman in Derek & the Dominos. Clapton later redid it solo, then redid it again acoustic and many people think that version is even better.
And here is some trivia for you, what song have the three legit choices in that poll all played and released on an album.

While Stevie Ray Vaugn Has become my favorite, I know he's blues mostly....so's Clapton for that matter.... I was never a big Jimi Hendrix fan....others I like are Keith Richards, Page and Plant, Rick NIelsen, Ted Nugent, Joe Satriani, Joe Perry.

Way too hard to say. Page, Tony Iommi and Neil Young should certainly be on that list; Ritchie Blackmore, David Gilmour, Slash, and Angus Young are up there as well.

I HATE Pantera and their style of music, but Dimebag is flat out an incredible guitarist. Im a softer/classic rock guy, but I sometimes listen to them just to hear Dimebag play hes insane.
I voted for Jimi, but it was close between him and Clapton. I think Page and Vai should definately be on here as well.
Edit: Why isnt Eddy Van Halen on the list, he was an amazing guitarist. Once again, not a Van Halen fan but really appreciate his guitar skills.

Should be on the list, but youv'e gotta go jimi here. The Edge is not close to being one of the greatest guitar players of all time, he does have his own style but he is not "innovative" like the jimi's, youngs's and clapton's of the world (like jimi, young and clapton are :D ) the Edge is more of a really good studio musician that was in the right place at the right time while the others would have been fine on there own and revolutionized the instrument.

You're correct, Clapton can play so much more, because he steals everyone else's style. I think the Cream stuff is brilliant, but if you really want to hear what Eric Clapton is trying to do, listen to Otis Rush and Freddie King. And if it wasn't SRV's emergence in the 80's to put the blues back on the map, Clapton's career would probably have been a lot quieter than it is now. And are there two worse songs on the planet than "Wonderful Tonight" and "Tears in Heaven"????
Hendrix was the man and passed the torch to Stevie. Edge I don't get at all..... Where is Edward Van Halen on this list? Every player from 1978 until grunge was an Eddie wannabe. Eddie launched an entire decade+.
Sorry, The Edge is good but he doesn't belong in the same poll as Clapton and Hendrix. Secondly, why did tob bring this thread up? It's over a year old.

I wouldnt say that. Im as big of a Zeppelin fan as you will ever find, my favorite band of all time. But I think Jimmy's playing skills get a BIT overrated due to Zeppelins insane success. He is still a top 5-10 all time player but I still don't think he is as good as guys like SRV and Clapton.

I almost fell outa my chair of laughter, when I read the edge was on this list. Many different styles out there. Phil Keagy is one of the greatest, and Eddie Van Halen has got to be on the list.

Clapton was in Derek and the Dominoes with Allman...and his guitar is the one you hear in the solo.

Before you guys start attacking me about something I posted a year ago, I'd like to give some context to this post. I put it together in about a minute (or so I believe)...and obviously left out a great number of good guitarists...so don't go hauling off because your personal favorite isn't on there.

Funny a poll without the greatest guitarsts of all time.
Where is Eddie Van Halen on the list? Hell even Satriani and Steve Vai say that Eddie is the best.

Well, personally because I don't think Eddie's that good. I don't even think he's top 10. In my opinion, all these guys are definitely better:
Clapton, Hendrix, Vaughan, Page, Allman, Betts, King, Garcia, Santana
And these guys are debatably better:
Anastasio, Young, Johnson, Richards...

No way..your opnion of course but Eddie Van Halen is to my generation what Hendrix was to my parents. Clapton has said he is "amazed" at what Eddie Van Halen has done. My god he changed the way the guitar was played. You need to go and listen to say a Kiss album from 1978, or any rock record from 1978 or a littler earlier. Then spin Van Halen 1, these guys were 5-10 years ahead of thier time bro. Van Halen 1 in 1978 rocks harder than most of the hair bands in 1985 even.

Van Halen definitely rocks hard, but that doesn't make him a great guitarist...and he does do some cool stuff, but he doesn't have to improv and solo power of Clapton and Hendrix.

Well you can definetly tell a great guitarist by his "own signature" sound. And Eddie definetly has his own sound. He dosent sound like anybody else. He dosent sound like Clapton, He dosent sound like Page...so many sound alike out there. 3 Seconds of one of his riffs..you know its him.

I still am just totally amazed that Edddie is not on this list when you have the the best guitarists in the world (some even on your list) calling Eddie the best. He is considered a " virtuoso" in fact.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_Van_Halen
Its too bad that Van Halen self destructed and brought in Hagar as they were headed to becoming the Zepp of the 80's. They even had the best live show of any concert I have ever seen..and ive seen em all.
