Who do you think will win?

Chase Utley
Evan Longaria
Dan Uggla
Grady Sizemore
Josh Hamilton
Justin Morneau
Lance Berkman
Ryan Braun

I'm calling Lance Berkman to win.

Berkman says he is batting right handed in the competition, so he wont win.

He says he isnt a natural pull hitter at all from the left side, and doesnt wanna mess his stroke up. But he *is* a natural pull hitter from the right side, plus he says he cant do anything do make his right handed stroke any uglier (even though its working this year).

I say Hamilton rips about 900 and wins.

themaninblack
07-14-2008, 03:20 PM
I think I like the lineup for this Derby more than the last few. I gotta go with Hamilton in this one but Dan Uggla can really drop some bombs too. I think I saw on ESPN that Hamilton says he's gonna hit one OUT of Yankee Stadium which I wouldnt put past him. He's probably the closest to Adam Dunn I have seen as far as being able to DESTROY the ball(in person at least). But, I guess it rly doesn't matter how far they go.

07-14-2008, 04:27 PM
Dan Uggla certainly won't have to change his swing at all... but that ridiculous cut he takes every time could make him very tired very quickly. I think it'll be too hard for him to duplicate the high numbers that he'll likely put up in the first round because of his stature and intensity of his swing.

The Rangers are comin' boy. Chris Davis is in the Majors now and blasting HRs left and right. They are rotating Salty and Max Ramirez at C. SS Elvis Andrus and C Taylor Teagarden were in the Futures game yesterday. OFs Julio Borbon and Nelson Cruz are tearing up the minors. Sad thing is, despite a killer first round Hamilton won't win the derby b/c he'll be way too tired to beat out the guys in the next 2 rounds who didn't hit 30 HRs. Same thing happened to Abreu and lots of 1st round wonders before.

I like Davis alot, kinda reminds me of Blalock as a young guy, with good power but with some real struggles and troubles with LHP. But he did have an nice run of games earlier in the month. And Hurley is getting some starts and experience this season, it's actually fun to get a chance to watch a young pitcher develop in front of us for once.

Hamilton isn't a FA until 2013.

For the guys who said the Rangers need pitching.... Yeah, you're right. But the Rangers pitching farm is better and deeper than their hitting. Don't let ignorance fool you. Do the research.

Trading away John Danks for Brandon McCarthy. McCarthy now on the disabled list.

Or trading Chris Young and Adrian Gonzelez for Adam Eaton and Akinori Otsuka. Albeit, Otsuka was a fine guy out of the bullpen. Give me Gonzalez and Young over him any day.

But yeah, he's sucked it bad in the past. Hate it too.

Hamilton for Volquez. Didn't mention that for a reason. No problem with that at all obviously.

It's just frustrating when you follow a guy through the minors and then see him develop into a nice pitcher for another club, while the guy you got wasn't exactly impressive in his short time here. McCarthy could well become a good guy in our rotation. I just saw alot more upside in Danks.

And yes I have to agree with you on the Texieria trade, he stocked up big time in that trade.

I like it the way it is now. It used to be only one round early on in the history (I looked on Wikipedia cuz I've only been around for 19 years and haven't really been interested in watching glorified batting practice), and there would be like 5 home runs, thats no fun. Plus its kinda like the season, not neccesarily the man who is the best wins.

But do you think were keeping Kinsler or Hamilton before they are traded? I don't, I'm not so worried about the value they bring in, but why do the standout players always have to be traded, can they ever build around some guys? Tex and Gagne were already a long list of guys; Soriano, A-Rod, the list goes on, I get tired of getting excited about young talent that develops into a nice prospect, because they ship them off for younger unproven talent that hasn't developed yet, I just don't get it.

Michael Young and Hank Blalock are examples though so what do you think about that? I know Blalock sucks now, but the Rangers rewarded him when they thought he was a future core peice. I'm not afraid of losing either Kinsler or Hamilton. Rangers like to have their bats. Always have.

did that guy honestly introduce justin as jason during the award ceremony?? am i the only one who saw that?

They butchered Morneau's name a lot and barely acted like he won.

Just for reference for those who don't see a lot of games at Yankee Stadium. My seats are in the upper deck in right field. I've never seen anyone hit one up to my seats, although Giambi comes close. I wasn't there but from watching on TV Hamilton hit quite a few up there. Granted I don't know if he could do that against major league pitchers actually trying but impressive anyway.

I would have liked to see him hit one out of the park. It can only be done in the alley way between the right field seats and the right/center bleachers. A pretty small alley/target to try for. It has never been done in a game but apparently Bernie Williams did it a few times in BP.

I was at that one...... It was crazy when Howard hit the million dollar sign to win it..... But I would never go spend crazy money like that......I was lucky enough to get the tickets for free.

Apparently hundreds of dollars. Tickets were ridiculous. Anywhere where HRs were likely to be hit, the tickets were hundreds of dollars.

It would be AMAZING to see how far Hamilton could hit a fastball in the 90's if he got ahold of it.

Yeah I noticed that, and they interviewed Hamilton first of course. LOL at ESPN

Edit: I definitely misunderstood. Haha I thought you meant the 1990's and was very confused. If he could connect like he was tonight on a mid-90's fastball it would be scorched.

Thats because he never gets ahold of it like he just showed he could with a 50mph pitch. If he got ahold of a ball that was going 90+ like he did tonight he probably would have hit it out of the stadium.

Never gets a hold? He has 21 HR and 95 RBIs at the break. I think he's gotten "a hold of one" a few times already.

Ya sure he's gotten plenty of HR's this season n I bet he nears 50 by seasons end but I'm talking about how far he would hit a 90+MPH fastball right on the sweet spot. 550 probably would not be out of the question.

I find the ESPN headline "Oh My Josh, he lost?" to be very annoying.

Its sad that ESPN's golden boy loses and they still have him in the headline. They bareley acknowledge the fact that Justin Morneau won.

Who the **** cares who wins the home run derby? I mean, really? The entire event is one big spectacle, and Hamilton put on by far the best show.

yeah that is true. Like I said the sad thing was that he wouldn't win it b/c he'd be too tired to hit anymore in the last round. They should just do one round instead of 3 (thanks for the negative rep anyways guys for making a good point *rolls eyes*)

Because Morneau kind of won through the back door. He wasn't the story. Hamilton hit somes shots of the likes I have never seen at Yankee Stadium. Yankee fans will not soon forget this. I'm sure they will give him huge ovations the next handful of times he comes to the new stadium.

Morneau only won because the set-up of the Home Run Derby is pretty terrible. They really should just do total home runs. Hamilton hit 6 more home runs in the 1st Round than Morneau hit the whole competition. Five years from now no one is going to remember that Morneau won, they're going to remember the show Josh Hamilton put on.

Pretty terrible is an understatement. I mean its an exhibition, and they have it set up like a whole regular season, where a guy who doesn't hit the most # of home runs in the HOME RUN Derby doesn't win. Don't get on me Twins fans, I am not hating on Morneau: he did what he did to win it, he won it, and I'll prolly remember it cuz some1 from Minnesota actually won something thats not named Adrian Peterson, but outside of that no one will. I just think they should change the format of it cuz it is awful.

Yeah I think it's stupid, it discourages players from trying to break records and get high round scores, it's become about who is the smartest rather who is the best hitter. Hamilton could have stopped at 15 in the first round and would have had enough energy to crush in the last round and get another 10, but he was going for the record.
