View Full Version : All-Time MLB Draft

djp
07-22-2008, 12:38 AM
Pretty simple. Pick players in their prime (2-3 year windows, so don't say you're picking 50 Home Run Brady Anderson).

All 9 positions including DH. 5 starters. 4 bullpen. 2 bench. 20 round draft.

Position players must have played a minimum of 1000 major-league games and pitchers appeared in no less than 200 games.

Let me know if you think the requirements should be higher/lower.

8-12 teams. I will be choosing the participants based on longevity/activity/prior draft history. YOU ARE NOT GUARANTEED A SPOT.

Pick a Negro League, Extinct, Minor League, Independent, or Fictional Team.

I will take the St. Paul Saints as my team. I would like to start the draft sometime before Wednesday.

DJP - St. Paul Saints
HB- St. Louis Browns
MetSox - TBA
Turtle - New York Highlanders
TRICH - Kansas City Monarchs
CJSchneider - Oakland A's
SARF - Los Angeles Dodgers
PF

1 hour time limit starting at 6pm CST Tuesday, July 22nd. The clock will run from 12pm to 12am.

I'm submitting my application.

I've been in my fair share of drafts here, successfully completed all of them, save for the ones i couldn't while i was suspended.

Country music draft (won), Several NBA Dynasty drafts, and finished recently the High School Prospects (FB) draft.

djp

Depending on if thule still wants in, we have our 8 guys.

People can draft anytime starting from when I make the order -- I will make thule last and then we'll find a sub if he doesn't want to compete anymore.

There will be a 1 hour time limit starting at 12pm tomorrow. PLEASE LEAVE LISTS IF YOU DONT THINK YOU WILL BE HERE. Send them to people who picked before you to avoid any tomfoolery.

I'll pick soon, i have a question though...

We are picking players in their primes(those 2-3 years), are we discounting what they did the rest of their careers?

MetSox17
07-22-2008, 11:10 PM
I believe that's the idea.. To eliminate the fluke years

No, we're not. But we are trying to eliminate unrealistic all-time picks ala Brady Anderson.

I liked the "in-their-prime" idea better..

djp
07-23-2008, 12:14 AM
it's up to you guys. The reason why I said in their prime, is because there are a few players who will go unnamed that only had 4-5 good years but were derailed by injury. That was my original idea.

Also, Negro League players ARE NOT ELIGIBLE.

Posted a depth chart thread.

Also, remember, when you choose your 4 relievers, you may have ONE former starting pitcher in your bullpen. The other 3 pitchers must be actual relievers.

djp
07-23-2008, 01:50 AM
4 outfielders off the bat. Pretty much expected though. I maybe thought Bonds would go a little lower because of the steroids thing, but you can't argue that production and he was still the best player in the league pre-steroids for a couple years.

MetSox17
07-23-2008, 01:56 AM
That's why i'm a little afraid of the voting, but i'm NOT afraid of his production. He's arguably the best hitter MLB ever saw, so he's more than deserving of the #2 overall position.

Big Boards.....why do we have to leave them?

So we don't have to wait for people to get on?

Here is the deal. We'll do a clock tomorrow again. 1 hour, starting at 12cst. If we have to skip you, you will be removed from the draft. If you leave a big board... say you're 5 picks away, leave a list of 6 players. That way you're guaranteed of getting a player you want.

If we have more problems, we'll just restart with new people.

HB, you make a big board(also called a list) based on your next pick. So say, you're up in 5 picks and you don't think you'll be here. So put 6 names down that you would take as your pick, and when you come up, we can just post it for you. Don't post it here or anything, just pm it to anyone in the draft that's on. Just keep doing that for every pick you think you might miss so we don't have to keep waiting.

And yea, I guess you know.

djp
07-24-2008, 01:16 PM
Let's not be naive here -- Bob Gibson changed baseball forever. He was arguably the most influential pitcher ever in the MLB.

And if you think Bob Gibson was the only one to put foreign substances on the baseball during that timeframe, you are sadly, sadly mistaken.

"'Don't dig in against Bob Gibson, he'll knock you down. He'd knock down his own grandmother if she dared to challenge him. Don't stare at him, don't smile at him, don't talk to him. He doesn't like it. If you happen to hit a home run, don't run too slow, don't run too fast. If you happen to want to celebrate, get in the tunnel first. And if he hits you, don't charge the mound, because he's a Gold Glove boxer.' I'm like, 'Damn, what about my 17-game hitting streak?' That was the night it ended." - Hank Aaron

That's where the fun is really going to begin. Our debates on the best teams are going to be awesome.

Do we want to go tournament style or just a flatout poll? I personally vote tournament style..

Because you are never on. We were on a roll and you didn't leave a big board. Leave on and then maybe next time we won't skip you.

That's dumb. I'm always on this thing, and if you waited the hour for me I would of been able to make my pick. I'm on right now waiting for everyone, maybe I should just skip everyone and make all my selections.

Your way to obsessed with Big Boards, The rules were you get an hour to make a selection, if that hour went by and I hadn't made my pick I would be fine with being skipped over but because "you were on a roll" is bullsh*t

Chill out man, the reason you had gotten skipped right off the bat this past round was because you had been skipped previously twice. That's why.

djp
07-24-2008, 07:17 PM
Yep.

We're obsessed with big boards? Sorry, they make the draft go a ton quicker and obviously making one would have benefited you since you've been skipped twice already. We skipped you because of your prior actions and yes, we were definitely on a roll. I don't want this draft taking 2 weeks.

HB, you just aren't understanding how these drafts work. You aren't here for your pick, you leave a list. It's really a simple concept.

Also,

I've seen two Negro League players on lists now. They ARE NOT ELIGIBLE. If you choose to take one, you are taking the player based on his MLB career. Josh Gibson is ineligible.

PF... you can take Satchel Paige since he did play in the majors... but you are taking the MLB Satchel Paige... not the Negro League Satchel Paige... you should probably repick that. Lineup

1. LF Rickey Henderson
2. 2B Jackie Robinson
3. RF Stan Musial
4. CF Willie Mays
5. 1B Harmon Killebrew
6. SS Ernie Banks
7. C Johnny Bench
8. 3B Eddie Mathews
9. DH Al Kaline

Contact. Power. Speed. Great starting pitching. This team has it all. Led by two of the greatest hitters and two of the greatest pitchers of all time, Willie Mays, Stan Musial, Sandy Koufax, and Bob Gibson lead the pack of my all time legends squad. Willie Mays is the best all-around player in the history of the game, PERIOD. And with the recent sabermetric movement in baseball, Stan Musial is now recognized as a top 5 hitter of all time.

Hitting wise, I've got unbelievable speed for my top 2 hitters. Rickey Henderson is the greatest leadoff hitter in the history of baseball. Jackie Robinson had blazing speed and got on base a ton. Stan Musial is just a straight hoss. The guy hit everything in sight. Everyone should know he and Willie's greatness. Hitting 5th is Harmon Killebrew, one of the greatest power hitters of his era. Known not only for his ability to hit homers, but the sheer raw power that he displayed. He hit absolute moon shots and also got on base a ton. Hitting 6th is Ernie Banks, who wasn't too shabby himself. Mr. Cub has over 500 home runs and is recognized as a top 2 shortstop of all time. After Banks, we have Johnny Bench, who was the best catcher of all time, and that's not really debatable. Rounding out the batting order are Eddie Mathews and Al Kaline, who aren't slouches by any means. Mathews hit over 500 homers and Kaline was extremely efficient in all aspects of the game.

As far as pitching goes, in my opinion, my top 2 are two of the most dominating pitchers in the history of baseball. Sandy Koufax from the left side was absolutely devastating when healthy during his career. Willie Mays once said Koufax tipped his pitches, and knew which one was coming, and still couldn't hit it. Bob Gibson changed the game of baseball forever when he had his monster season. They shrunk the strike zone and lowered the mound because of his dominance. 3rd in the rotation is Whitey Ford, one of the greatest playoff pitchers in the history of baseball and a proven winner. A very cerebral player. Perry and Radbourn provide stability in the back of the rotation. Perry was extremely consistent during his career and Radbourn was the definition of a workhorse, by pitching over 600 innings in a season numerous times.

For the bullpen, I went for proven legit relief pitchers. Rollie Fingers was a great value pick for me, he was one of the greatest closers of all time. Bruce Sutter revolutionized pitching by being one of the first to utilize a split fingered fastball, and he was damn good at throwing it. Myers and Ricky Ags provide both tremendous velocity and control, but also great makeup as well.

No, leave a longer list.

You never told anyone when you were leaving or would return. I'd get random big boards from you when you were 15 picks away that are 5 players long.

I saw your list, and just chose not to use it because of your poor attendance.

I totally agree, don't call into work. Gotta get that money.

Just let everyone know, "hey, I will be here for about 20 minutes total in the next week, so if you can find someone that will be more active, go ahead". Not, "Hey, DJP, I've never done one of these before, you should give me a shot." That to me, makes me think that you were gonna be here more than you were.

I don't understand why the how long my big board is matters, if its 2, 5 or 100 players long.......if you list 2 players and those 2 players are both available, then it really shouldn't matter.

And yes, yesterday I told you I had work till 8:00 Central time, yet you skipped me at 6:16 CT clearly knowing I was at work.

Okay guys, i made a mistake in one of my picks.

I had forgotten to put Phil Niekro in my depth chart, who i had picked like in the 9th round, and then i proceeded to take ONE extra regular time starter that i would have to list as my relief pitcher.

Is anyone opposed to that, since we were only supposed to have one, or should i go back and change my pick? Honest mistake..

Let me know

Im not all that motivated on doing an explanation of my team, lets get a vote up and the winner can post an explanation of their champion.
