I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread for people to post news from their teams TC.

I've got a couple of questions too:

Washington: How's Brennan looking?
Detroit: Has Stanton got any better, I hear Olorvsky is was listed as the 2nd QB?

Panthers update: http://www.carolinagrowl.com/Read.aspx?Story=633

During 9-on-7 drills one of Carolina’s offensive linemen failed to block veteran linebacker Thomas Davis who came roaring through the middle of the line and knocked Stewart off his feet and on to his back.

Thud!

“Welcome to the NFL,” Davis told him.

A few plays later, Stewart settled in and showed the combination of speed, strength and quickness that persuaded the Panthers to draft him 13th overall as he broke a tackle inside and bounced outside and took off up the sidelines for a nice gain.

“After that hit I was trying to dish it out a little bit,” Stewart said.
Stewart later dropped a pass in the flat after taking his eye off the ball. He probably should have dropped the next one as well since Davis was there to clock him again.

“I came out here and it was like a sheep thrown into the wolves today,” he said with a grin, probably knowing that one day he'll look back on this day and laugh.

Still, he left the field feeling good about his first NFL practice, considering this was his first practice since undergoing turf toe surgery.
“I’m breaking in my toe a little bit,” Stewart said. “It’s going to take me some time to be my regular self. I can feel it, but it’s one of those things where it’s bearable and it’s going to get better as we work through these things.”

Sounds pretty stock standard for a rookie but I really don't like what he had to say about his turf toe. I hope the team is cautious with him.

Me and my dad drove to camp today but there was so much traffic we missed the entire scrimmage by the time we got there. 30,000 people showed up at skins park today. Wish I could have seen Brennan.

Jason Campbell went 15/22 for 122 yards and one TD.
Todd Collins went 8/13, 52 yards, 1 interception
Colt Brennan went 4/7, 22 yards Fred Davis droped a pass when he was wide open and colt got one of his passes batted down
Derek Devine went 2/6, 14 yards

I've heard that Zorn does like Colt. However, there is a lot of refining Zorn wants to do to Colt's dropback and sidearm throwing motion. He's short already and with that throwing motion it would result in too many batted balls.
He has the right mindset and is willing to learn from one of the better QB developers. But based on the recent intersquad scrimmage, he didn't fare too well.

Colt is probably a 1-2 more year project in order to have a chance to be a successful QB in the NFL.

Otah is throwing the scout team defense around like rag dolls.

The first thing you notice about right tackle Jeff Otah is the way other almost-as-large men fly backward after colliding with him.

Otah, on the other hand, looked like a rampaging elephant at times.
They list him at 6-6 and 330 pounds, but he seems bigger, whether he's enveloping on-rushing defenders or filling doorways.
There were times when defensive end Tyler Brayton looked helpless against him, with Otah shoving him back in both pass-rush and running drills. It's the running game in which they're most excited about his addition (though they think he has the kind of light feet to play on the left side eventually).

Bad news about Brayton though lol/.

Orlovsky is the back-up right now, but Stanton is still essentially a rookie. He got hurt pretty early in training camp last year and was put on IR.

Gosder Cherilus and Jonathan Scott have been playing both the LT and RT spots.

I was at Eagles camp yesterday and today, and here are a few things:
Donovan looks great, if he stays healthy, expect a big year.
Westbrook is his usual self, despite the contract issues.
Lito and Sheldon look good. Haven't seen much on Asante, day to day with a pulled hammy.
Our LBs are very fast and very athletic. Lots of playmaking potential.
Dawkins has been quiet, but that is usually the case this time of year.
Kolb has looked Inconsistent.
Eagles fourth round pick Quentin Demps is the main reason Kolb has been inconsistent. He has had a pick in every practice,a nd has looked very impressive all around.
SS is up for grabs, either Mikell or Considine have a legitimate shot.
FB is wide open, Jason Davis, Luke Lawton, and maybe even udrafted rookie FA Jed Collins out of Washington state could win the starters role. Right now though Davis has a slight lead over Lawton.
Max Jean Gilles is doing a great job of filling in for Andrews.
Winston Justice looks to have a bright future as a RT.
7th round pick LT King Dunlap may be the tallest player in the NFL. He has been listed anywhere from 6'8 to 6'10.
LJ Smith is healthy and is looking good.
DeSean Jackson will make an impact as a return man and a slot right away. He isn't anywhere near a #1 WR, or #2 for that matter yet, but in a year or so, could be.
LDEs Victor Abiamiri, Juqua Parker (Thomas) and Chris Clemons is going to be a great rotation with balance. All bring different components, but the pass rush is there and so is the run stuffing.
Bunkley and Patterson are doing well, the whole D-line has been making plays.
P Sav Rocca is more consistent and is booming punts.
Backup LBs have a lot of competition. MLB Joe Mays seems to be leading in the backup role.
OLB Andy Studebaker is raw, and makes some mistakes, but has also made tons of plays.
Reggie Brown seems to have something different this year. I'm hoping it means he will finally be the #1 we expected him to be, but I'm not sure yet.
Lorenzo Booker is looking like a Westbrook Clone. He is used in any situation possible. WARNING: To all NFL Defenses: This guy will create mismatch problems.<<<That is no joke, this kid is for real. Correll Buckhalter is looking very nice, but neither Tony Hunt or Ryan Moats have done anything to secure a roster spot.
Greg Lewis may be the odd man out at WR. Jason Avant is playing well, but Lewis is also playing well right now. Hank Baskett seems safe to me. The last WR spot will come down to Avant and GLew.
Trevor Laws and 3rd round pick Bryan smith have minor injuries, and have sat out camp so far.

I know that is a lot, and I could have done way more, but there you go, I think that is pretty much all the info you need to know from Eagles camp. (I may have covered every starter and backup:D:D)

Will Smith is down to 275lbs, Charles Grant 278lbs and Hollis Thomas lost A LOT of weight but no word on how much yet. Everyone on the D-Line has been more explosive and seem to have more energy than last year at this time. Hollis thomas in particular has been having a outstanding TC, as he pancaked all of the Saints O-linemen at least once, some a couple times and blowed through Jammal Brown, knocking him to the ground. Maybe drafting Ellis lit a fire for Thomas, I don't know or our new D-line Coach but he looks like a beast.

Bobby McCray first step is amazing. By far the Saints fastest D-linemen off the snap. He's pretty bad at trying to stop the run, though. Good thing he is our 3rd down pass rush specialist.

Rookie WR Adrian Arrington is catching everything thrown his way. Everyday, he keeps making plays and that's something Marques Colston did in his first TC. But he does need to work on getting off the line a little faster and his run blocking needs work. Somebody needs to check his hands for glue, though. Ditto for Robert Meachem.

Word is, Adam Jones has been a terror in the secondary thus far in camp. He's playing aggressive, picking off balls, laying the wood, and keeping with TO pretty darn well. If he stays out of trouble (BIG if), he's going to be one hell of a player.

Actually Adam Jones was lit up repeatedly at the practice this evening. From what the reports are saying...but he is matching himself up with TO as much as possible..even cutting in line occasionally in 1 on 1 drills just to face him.

The bright spot in dallas right now that most won't be told about is Sam Hurd. No doubt in my mind right now that he will be the starting WR opposite of TO opening day. Hurd is a better fit at the 2 spot because Crayton is such an elite slot guy. That said I'm sure we won' thave a set #2 all year...but Hurd should be the outside guy most of the time with Crayton in the slot...also look for our special package with Felix Jones spread out wide and Barber in the backfield...dallas cutting Terry Glenn has lead to a lot of mumbles about who is going to replace him...but between, Bennett, Jones, Hurd, Curtis his loss will be minimal imo.

On the defensive side of the ball...dallas should be towards the top of the league in pass defense this year...the depth of the secondary is really showing when they go into a passive defensive scheme. Watch out for Dallas' pass happy defense...Jenkins and Jones out wide...Newman in the slot...Henry in tight usually with TE or RB assignments...and Hamlin and Watkins manning the safety positions. Thats as deep of a secondary as anyone in the NFL right now.

Another thing to note is James Marten is still taking snaps at LG...and it appears that both Free and McQwisten will be manning the backup tackle positions for awhile...so Martens chance to stick is going to be on the inside for awhile.

The last point of interest from cowboys camp is the battle for the bottom WR spot....mini camp star Danny Amendola is still fighting for a spot on the roster and it looks like it'll be a battle for the final roster spot with a safety at this point. Want to see Amendola make the team look no further than the Adam Jones reinstatement as a parameter...Amendola is an upgrade over crayton as a punt returner and if Goodell doesn't reinstate Adam...then look for Amendola's value to go up with the organization. If I had to make a guess the final roster spot should be a toss up between Amendola and Dowayne Davis SS.

Theme of Titans camp so far has been D, or more specifically, the defensive line. Jason Jones is apparently impressing, with the usual suspects in KVB and AH doing well. Stephen Tulloch filled in for Thornton at OLB while he was away and is really coming along - he may beat Fowler for the MLB spot. Not sure about DB's but Reynaldo Hill has been making some plays.

On offense Brandon Jones is doing well along with Gage and McCareins, with Mike Williams showing flashes but not without some quiet periods. Most other WR's are about as expected. Crumpler is looking great. White is doing ok but is not in football shape yet (surprise surprise). Henry is doing ok but struggling to standout. Johnson is looking good so far but until full contact ensues, he will be an unknown. Dinger in a recent interview suggested he could be the Titans primary RB though. Vince has shown improvement in the quick/short game but overall the D has outplayed the O.

These are all the general themes in most reports (i.e. I'm not there, obviously *<-- points to location*).

I feel much better about this team after just one training camp visit. I have been to the last several years. The past two seasons I did not think they looked all that great. This season so far I am much more optimistic.

- Jason Carter probably has the best throwing arm on the team. Go figure.
- Jake and Smitty are in mid season form. Really.
- Stewart is faster than I thought. He broke a few runs up the gut that had the crowd in awe.
- Otah is one bad mamma jamma. He was throwing guys around like rag dolls.
- Moose made a really nice grab over the middle, and smiled as the crowed yelled mooooooose.
- The defense has a chip on their shoulder once again, taking it personally when a good play is made. Talking trash. Very promising.
- Schwartz is a big dude and will make the team. He is stronger than anyone gives him credit for.
- I am surprised how little talk Kalil is getting. There is a huge difference between last season and this season. He now has a swagger and a confidence. That is what the dude who runs the Panthers huddle had to say and he's far from an apologist.

Hilee Taylor is looking like a big disappointment though

Hackett isn't adjusting as fast as expected to the new system either.

-Rookie WR Dexter Jackson, who stands just 5-9 and weighs 182 pounds, looks like he may have deceptive strength to go with his speed, a la Joey Galloway. On two snaps during the one-on-ones, he had to fight against pressing cornerbacks, and on both cases he more than held his own, first with CB Elbert Mack and then with CB Ronde Barber. On the second one, Jackson broke free to catch a "touchdown pass."

-Morris was his usual outspoken self, celebrating two Aqib Talib interceptions with some loud praise and even a jumping high five with the rookie after his second pick.
Talib’s first interception came off a Brian Griese throw towards the sideline. WR Maurice Stovall grabbed Talib immediately, but Talib pitched the ball to Phillips who streaked down the sideline for a touchdown with Morris running right alongside him. The second of Talib’s picks came off a throw in traffic from Chris Simms. Talib jumped a short route over the middle and took the ball away from the intended receiver.

Here's some stuff from Bolts camp...Hester is impressing, and Rivers is looking like he's already built on last season's excellent stretch run.

Rivers showing zing in his wing
http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/chargers/20080728-9999-1s28chnotes.html

Whether it is new strength in his legs or the results of “a very good offseason in the weight room,” the ball is flying out of Philip Rivers' hand.
“I feel crisper,” said Rivers, who is absolutely zinging balls short and long. “I don't know if it's a zip, but it's coming out crisp.”

Rivers does look thicker in his upper body. He began working out earlier in the offseason because he was around the complex rehabbing his surgically repaired ACL. But also strengthening the muscles in his legs has given him a new bounce.
“Some of it may be the lower body,” he said yesterday. “A lot of people say you come back stronger.”

Merriman being careful
Shawne Merriman is wearing a brace on his left knee mostly out of caution while camp is full of guys flying around trying to impress coaches.
“Right now there is a lot of competition going on,” said Merriman, who had his meniscus repaired in March. “I don't want anything crazy happening.”

Merriman said the knee is totally healed, but he held out the possibility he could continue wearing the brace in September.

Hester plays big
On the first day of wearing pads, one player stood out as a different beast. Even though there was no real hitting, rookie running back Jacob Hester looked and played bigger in pads vs. shells.
Teammates noticed, some even commenting to him how much different he looked.

“That's kind of my style,” Hester said. “I like to put my shoulders down.

Nuts 'n' Bolts
Derek Smith took turns with the first team in place of Stephen Cooper for the first time. Smith is the likely replacement for Cooper at inside linebacker the first month of the season while Cooper serves his NFL suspension for a positive test for a banned stimulant.
Jeremy Newberry, who will likely start the season at center while Nick Hardwick's foot continues to heal, worked for the second straight practice with the first team. It is important for him to get down a rhythm with the guards he plays next to, as well as with Rivers.

Since I'm not going to break down every reason why the Giants will dominate and have no flaws, here's some actual news:

Kenny Phillips is flat out nuts. Few nasty picks, including a remarkable diving INT. Looks legit

Kevin Boss is no longer diving for passes or stumbling around. He looks fluid out there and VERY comfortable. Almost nonchalant. Gives G-Men fans hope.

more, and VERY surprising news: TE Darcy Johnson is catching the ball!!!!

TE Michael Matthews isn't. oh wait, that's not news :D

Falcons camp:

Chris Redman seems to be doing well. I liked him alot last season and I felt as if we could have gone a year with him starting (and taken Dorsey...then maybe Stafford).

Matt Ryan seems to being all right. Just about average (which is kind of lame because its TC and everyone does well). Oh well. Its just his first couple of TC practices.

Brent Grimes is a guy you might wanna know about. He has basically come out of no where and is making a really good impression at CB. He seems to be a very good cover guy, but his lack of bulk is disturbing.

Roddy White looks ripped. I am hoping for an off year for Steve Smith again so White has the chance to make the Pro Bowl.

Some basic new out of Raider camp...

- Derrick Burgess has been the most unstoppable player on that Oakland defense. Whether this is due to the lack of quality offensive tackles or whether he's back to his 2006 form is unknown, but he is head and shoulders above the rest of the defensive line right now.

- Drew Carter might be the most impressive receiver Oakland has right now. Walker has been decent and Curry is always solid, but Carter has developed a good connection with JaMarcus Russell and might be a potential breakout guy this season.

- Kwame Harris still sucks.

- Michael Huff has been far more active playing the free safety spot, making plays like he never did when he played strong safety. He's been flashing that speed and breaking on the ball nicely.

- Thomas Howard and Kirk Morrison are playing the pass so well lately that the Raiders' Dime defense will feature two linebackers instead of the more typical one 'backer configuration.

- JaMarcus Russell has been inconsistent. Some days he puts on absolutely throwing clinics (we have a great practice quarterback here), and other days he makes simple mistakes.

- Nnamdi Asomugha and DeAngelo Hall are everything they should be so far. Both have been making a ton of plays on the ball.

Man thats damn exciting. DBs are one of my favorite groups of players and Oakland is so perfect. You have 2 guys who can shut down the opposing WRs and a free roaming safety that will be making plays all over the field.

Apparently Gibril Wilson has left a big impression to. He's emphasized his desire to play in the box repeatedly, something that fits exactly what the Raiders defense needed. If he can aid the run game enough to motivate opposing offenses to pass a little more, Oakland defense could get a lot better really fast.

Yeah he fits the bill really well. I think that your DTs need alot more presence in the middle. You guys need a huge NT. I also think that as much as Morrison is a beast in coverage, he could afford to be a bit tougher against the run.

-Kwame has already missed two practices with a 'sore back' and there has only been one practice free of false-starts for the oline. Kwame has not looked good in Pass Protection, and has also perpetuated his penchant for false starts. Didn't this guy got to Stanford??

-Center-QB exchange has been suspect, something we Raider fans have unfortunately grown accustomed to.

LYNCH LOOKING PHYSICAL: One player that was certainly ready to put on the pads Monday was Marshawn Lynch. Not only was he blocking effectively, he was knocking some linebackers down.

Ironically after the first set of blocking drills, there was a special teams segment that he was not a part of, so Lynch went down to the other end of the field with the starting linebackers and hit the sled with them.

"I wanted to see it from the other side," Lynch told Buffalobills.com.

Lynch and Dwayne Wright looked strong through the hole on a few runs, but there was a fair amount of penetration by the defense in the run game. We'll see who gets the better of the play in the next pads practice, which comes tomorrow night.

I agree that their secondary is awesome but it's a bit of a shame because I think the support up front isn't gonna let them show what they can do. Overall, that defense has too many holes for an offense to exploit.

the OL is the Raiders' achilles heel, and it's a bit one. You guys did a pretty good job adressing all the problem areas (even though Al Davis overpaid for most) but to be honest, that lack of OL is gonna be painful.

Bottom line is, JaMarcus and MacFadden won't be very effective if half the opposing teams' DL is in the backfield.

I'm not terribly worried about McFadden not being effective. The Raider run game was more than fine last year, and while Kwame Harris can't pass block he's definitely a better run blocker than Barry Sims. The lefthand duo of Harris and Gallery should be bruising. But, yeah, when the Raiders fall behind and have to throw the ball, you wonder if the o-line will keep Russell upright.

-Peppers seems to have bounced back nicely. Last year around TC there were rumors that he had a virus or a mystery injury because he seemed lethargic and unable to spark. This year he's been flying around the ball, chasing down backside, collapsing the offensive line. Back to his old form, which is brilliant news.

-The Panthers defense has been simplified this year considering that most of the veteran leadership has either retired or been fired.

-Thomas Davis has been shifted to the weakside so he can be used more as a blitzer a role in which he excels, he's making plays in camp.

-Stewart will likely have the bulk of the carries by the end of the year but thinks that it will depend more on what play is called rather than just sticking with one guy. Wiliams will still likely get his carries and team will try to get him more involved on screen passes because of his explosive ability.

-if you had never seen Jake Delhomme throw a ball and had not heard about his Tommy John surgery, you would never know that he ever had anything wrong with him. Looks to be fine.

Thanks to Darren Gannt.

In bad news

Not one of our left defensive ends (Stanley McClover, Charles Johnson, Tyler Brayton) has been able to hold off Jeff Otah who's throwing all comers around like a rag doll. Note, he hasn't lined up against Peppers yet.

Hackett isn't running a lot of z routes or quick ins and outs from the slot which makes me think his knee might have a lingering issue

Jordan Gross on Peppers:
eft tackle Jordan Gross, who faces Peppers every day in practice, said Peppers is “bigger, stronger and faster” than he’s ever seen him and fully expects him to rebound from a disappointing season in 2007. “I'll say this with 100 percent confidence, I think he's going to have his best year ever,” said Gross, who has been teammates with Peppers since 2003. “He's better than I've ever seen him. Barring anything unknown, there's no reason he won't go out and set records, I think. He looks really, really good.”

THE YOUNG GUYS
*S Kenny Phillips flattened RB Reuben Droughns on a run up the middle. Only one problem: there's supposed to be limited contact in practice. "Be smart out there, blue," one offensive player yelled to the blue-shirted defensive players after Phillips' hit. I think it was C Shaun O'Hara who did the yelling. Phillips didn't lose any aggressiveness after that, though, because he gave WR Brandon London a little shot as London hauled in a deep ball from Wright down the left sideline. In a real game, Phillips would have lit London up like a Christmas tree. Today, he took a little off as London held onto the ball. Secondary coach Peter Giunta didn't say anything to Phillips but got on Dockery for letting London get a free release off the line

If it were up to Kenny Phillips, the Giants wouldn't have any healthy receivers left. This kid is all over the field making plays -- and hits -- even though the guys aren't wearing pads until tonight. He decked Droughns on a run up the middle, sending the RB sprawling in 11-on-11s, and in 7-on-7s he put a big hit on Brandon London on a pass down the sideline, up-ending the receiver. Kudos to London for hanging onto the ball, by the way.

If you go by stuff from mini camp to today, one can get the sense that he is learning the system very quickly, and has made good ints, and can has great range in making plays. Kirwan was on Sirius radio live at our camp, and was raving about the range he saw from KP. Also, as you said, KP is lighting people up as well.

The issue was his potential, and if a team can tap it because he was productive for 1 year, and played alot in the box. But we are playing him at FS, and his job is to hit people, knock down passes, and get ints. And in this role for us, he is doing a very good job in practices thus far.

Kirwan then RAVING about Kenny Phillips. Is blown away by his range. Tyree agreed. They were almost giggling about it.

-about D:

Again mentioned Kenny Phillips: Will be in starting lineup soon. (Says probably will replace James Butler.) He can make it look like the sideline is available to the QB, when it isn't. Incredible range.

-Kenny Phillips - not in starting lineup yet, but will be soon. They love his range. Great ability to tease the QB to throw the ball outside, then to use his speed to get to the ball. Phillips is a definite upgrade. Phillips has no problem with the mental aspect.

-On Kenny Phillips

Kirwan raving about him AGAIN.

Reese: He can get over the top really quick. Range. Size. Smart. They expect him to be a really good football player for them, for a long time. They really like him.

With the Giants passrush, that pass defense is going to be a force to be reckoned with.

But it's still the NFC East and their are some elite backs in Portis and Westbrook that are hard to account for because they create such a mismatch against both lbs and safetys.

That's true, but then again this is the NFC east. While one team may have a edge there, it evens out somewhere else at another position. That's usually why we can beat each other up year after year.

*If you're an NFL receiver and you're reading this, well, you really should be doing something cooler. But if you are reading this, do yourself a favor and keep an eye on Phillips if and when you play against him in the future. He seems to always be in a position to put his helmet through somebody's torso. Tonight, it was Moss who nearly got Jack Tatumed. But after laying a few hits this morning and being reprimanded, Phillips pulled up and put his hands up on this one.

Why move Davis from SLB to WLB when he was such a force?

I knew Phillips was underdrafted. All that BS about his 40, he plays 12-15 yards off of the ball. I thought the Texans should have scooped him up to help solidify their secondary.

so he can utilize his speed and be on the field more. plus we're getting more aggresive on defense and will be blitzing more, davis is a better blitzer than diggs and johnson. this is where he should been when he first made the move from safety to LB imo

I was screaming for Phillips before the draft. Reports out of camp are that Clinton Hart is really clicking with Weddle, but I think a Weddle/Phillips safety tandem would be pretty bitchin.

Here's hoping Antoine Cason beasts it up from the nickel.

The Panthers wan't more speed on the weakside. Thomas Davis played up on the line and blitzed a lot at georgia so playing on the same side as julius peppers with 4.54 speed in a 250 pound linebacker is insane to have that screaming off the edge.

The new philosophy the Panthers are introducing will involve a lot more blitzing and Fox will want to bring it with Davis.

I doubt we get anything done through the air though. No question the run-heavy scheme will be our bread and butter on offense once again if we want to accomplish anything. To be honest I didn't expect anything different from Kwame and even Huff in his new position where we all thought he should have played from day one. Lastly, I thought Russell would've been much farther along than he's shown to be thus far into camp. meh.

It's Russell's first camp and he's an incredibly raw prospect. Don't give up on him...it will be a couple years before he's proclaimed a real bust.

Can't wait to see Merriman and Phillips take turns against Kwame Harris though. That certainly won't help Russell's development.

Let's see if I can summarize some of the standout players for Dallas:

- Tony Romo has been nearly perfect according to the beat writers in Oxnard, he has been showing some pin-point accuracy, and looks more comfortable in Garrett's offense this year.

- Tank Johnson finally makes his presence felt...He has been our most disruptive NT outside of Jay Ratliff, in the backfield, pushed Guroed to the ground another play, he was at OTA telling everyone he was a beast now and to watch out and he came out and backed it up...Our D line will surprise alot of people if this turns out to be true and we can have a base like of Ratliff - Tank - Canty.

- Adam Jones has been going up against TO nearly every practice since he has been here, and TO has been getting the best of him for the most part...He has been active, fiery, and doesn't look as rusty as expected, he should be up to speed by pre-season especially having to face TO in practice...Looks like he will be starting for us if re-instated, and with the Newman groin injury looks like an even better idea having him now.

- Sam Hurd has seperated himself from Miles Austin and looks to really be a find...He is bigger, faster, and has been a consistent playmaker in one on one's and team, beating Newman on quite a few plays...He will push Crayton to be that outside guy and let Crayton play out of the slot.

- On the rookies Bennett has struggled quite a bit, exciting play one minute then brain lapse the next, seems like he's thinking too much...Felix looks comfortable, I think he is going to flourish in his role of playing the slot, coming out of the backfield, and probably KR, showing nice hands, smooth running style and great acceleration...Jenkins is getting reps with the 1st team with Newman out which is good, he has struggled with off man coverage a little but played very well in press coverage bump and run.

Morning notes: Toomer returns
http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/2008/07/morning-notes-toomer-returns.html

Found this part really funny.

I’m telling you, Kenny Phillips is going to hurt someone. I watched QB David Carr throw a nice pass down field in the direction of WR Mario Manningham. The receiver seemed open and I thought he was going to catch it and then - boom! - out of nowhere Phillips came charging in. He nearly made the interception and nearly took Manningham’s head off, all at the same time. He’s got to be in the receivers’ heads by now. I know he’s in my head. Every time I feel something moving behind me I quickly look to find out where the rookie safety is.

- Donovan McNabb is underthrowing some balls but for the most part is almost completely healthy again and looks the best he has in years.
- Brian Westbrook is still a beast obviously, his best play so far in TC was a 60 yard run the other day.
- Perhaps the biggest surprise of camp so far and someone who might make a big impact on the team this year and even get recognition around the league is Lorenzo Booker. He's catching everything and getting split out wide and burning people. Also had a 70+ yard run the other day.
- Jason Avant is tearing it up at WR running beautiful routes and catching everything and will be a great slot WR for us.
- Max Jean-Gilles is filling in for the emotionally disturbed Shawn Andrews and is performing like a starter, he's a mauler but could use some work at pass protection.
- Mike Patterson gained at least 20 pounds it looks like in the offseason by request of the coaches and looks like he's in probowl form.
- Stewart Bradley at MLB looks like our best LB and could surprise a lot of people around the league, Omar Gaither compared his style of play to Brian Urlacher.
- Sheldon Brown is the standout DB in camp and may beat out Lito Sheppard for the starting CB spot opposite Asante Samuel.
- The darkhouse to make the team is 4th year CB Therrian Fotntenot who looks like he will beat out 5th CB Nick Graham and might even compete for dime against Joselio Hanson.

Bills have upper hand with Peters

Bucky Gleason
Updated: 07/28/08 6:44 AM

http://media.buffalonews.com/static/images/writers/gleason_bucky.jpgThe message sounded all too familiar, a filthy rich athlete whining about not making enough money. Jason Peters’ protest over his contract with the Buffalo Bills didn’t exactly startle an organization that spent years listening to Bruce Smith’s annual blather about feelings of disrespect.

Bruce’s general approach was complaining about his contract, reminding everyone he was the best defensive end in football, finding reasons to skip large portions of training camp and reporting back to the Bills for the start of the season. It was Bruce being Bruce, greedy and selfish, always taking care of No. 1 before donning No. 78.

Ralph Wilson has been around the block a few times, knows every pothole on the street. He’s owned the franchise for nearly 50 years. He transformed the Bills from a $30,000 risk into a $760 million empire. He’s had terrific teams and terrible ones. But he always, always, did business on his own terms.

Obviously, Peters doesn’t know Ralph the way we do. He’s not a man with whom you want to play chicken, especially when he’s driving a tractor-trailer and you’re in a Pinto. Peters isn’t Bruce. He has neither the leverage nor the credentials to bully around the Bills.

If the intention is sending a message, Peters is going about it the wrong way. If he’s looking for a fight, he picked one of the toughest kids in the neighborhood. Clearly, the Bills aren’t backing down. If they buckled to him, players looking for new deals would be lining up along Jim Kelly Boulevard.

Chief Operating Officer Russ Brandon made that perfectly clear last week when he stood firm going into camp. It doesn’t take a COO, a CEO, a CFO or a GOOF to see the Bills have the upper hand. If he plans to make another NFL dime, Peters best get his fanny to camp.

He should also redirect his anger. His contempt should be for his former agent, Vincent Taylor, who unlike management failed to see the potential in his client. The Bills should be given credit for locking up a prospect and molding him into a Pro Bowl left tackle.

Peters’ current agent, power hitter Eugene Parker, isn’t doing Peters any favors either by advising his client to stay home. Peters can sit and pout, but he’s not helping himself or his team. Every day away from training camp is another day of silence, another opportunity for someone else and another $15,000 down the drain. Today, he’ll move past $60,000 in fines for unexcused absences from training camp.

He’s not going to get much sympathy from people who would be thrilled to make $60,000 a year, let alone the $4 million he could collect this season if he hits his bonuses. The fact he’s willing to throw that much money away should be an insult to every person who socks money away just to watch him play.

Remember, too, that the Bills were the team that signed him out of college as an undrafted free agent and gave him an opportunity. Peters did his part, but where would he be without them? Perhaps he would be playing on another NFL team. It’s also quite possible he would be nowhere.

Nobody is asking for loyalty. Management is well-aware that Peters’ deal is well-below market value. My guess is the Bills would be willing to restructure his contract, give him a new deal commensurate with his ability.

Aaron Schobel’s contract was restructured when it had three years remaining. Terrence McGee signed a new deal. Brad Butler and Kyle Williams had previous contracts ripped up and replaced with better ones. None made a stink before reaching agreements.

Peters wants a new deal? Fine. Talks can begin when he shows up for camp. Until he arrives, the Bills can keep collecting from him.

You mean the guy in Carolina who's been performing better than expected?

Jake Delhomme continues to look brilliant and ready to start. He's in the best physical shape of his career and not once has held his arm gingerly or had to shake out any soreness. He's still got a pitch count, but no lingering pain.

Johnathen Stewart another day another bucketload of praise from everyone about how amazing he looks. On the first day he surprised people with his breakaway speed and not he's doing it in the passing game.

DeAngelo Williams Doing everything he can to be assertive, though he is still being a good tutor to Stewart. He's improved head and shoulders over his camp last year and his hitting the hole with authority and showing excellent vision.

Steve Smith ready to play today.

Muhummad He's definitley lost a step but he was never fast anyway. His veteran legs still have some leap and tricks in them because he's yet to drop a pass or have on picked on him.

Hackett starting to find his place, got himself lost in the defense twice yesterday for two touchdowns. His smooth routes and uncanny speed are going to be a huge asset for the panthers.

Fight there was a brawl between Otah and Brayton today, thankfully brayton kept his knee out of it, but its good to see players fighting for their spots.

Injuries Ian Scott DT formerly of Philly, broke down on wednesday, suspected torn ACL the same knee from last year. Currenlt Ma'ake KEmoeatu and Demoine Lewis (starters) are resting with injuries at shoulder and leg respectively and Darwin Walker has a mild concussion. That leaves 3 tackles remaining 1 rookie 1 udfa and some journeyman nobody.

DJ Hackett is being treated with kid gloves until they're sure his ankle is ready to go

Stewart though feeling good about his toe is getting plenty of rest as well

new offense stuff More two tight end sets using the smaller faster tight ends the Panthers have on the roster. Dante Rosario former oregon player looks to be winning the starting spot.

LOL of the day WHAT WE LEARNED: You don’t jump off-sides at practice. Not anymore. Offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson instituted a new rule Wednesday designed to cut down on the number of false start penalties this year. Tackle Frank Omiyale was the first to screw up and was sent on the Lap of Shame, immediately yanked from team drills and forced to run a lap around the football field.

Bad Stuff No player other than Peppers has been able to effectively generate pressure in the passing game, though Brayton has played the run extremely well. If the team is to be succesful someone has to step up.

LaBrandon Toefield has next to no chance of making the team at the rate he's going.

The offensive unit is doing extra work on RB pass protection drills considering the youth at the position. I don't like the fact that our backs need more work picking up bandits, it can't hurt though.

That's what I love about this time of the year, everybody is just perfect. The coaches cannot say enough about every player on their team, they are all just performing like they were all pros, then the exhibition season starts when they actually have to play against somebody for real and all the hype slowly disappears and when the season starts 22-26% of rookies actually start mostly for teams that were losers last year, the rest of the rookies ride the bench until an injury gets them into the game or they are actually ready to play around the 8th game of the season after practicing for half a season.
Right now the hype is absurd and has little to do with reality or how they will actually play during the season. Every foolish home town fan who believes the hype coming from their team's training camp needs a reality check.

If you're not at least optimistic about some of the players from your team you're hardly a fan. Blame the media coverage if anything not people posting updates from what they've heard.

I like to hear what rival teams are doing what. Its also good from a fantasy standpoint. If you don't have any news about a team, why bother whinging about people that do.

I think we gave him a fair chance last season when we reclaimed him after Indy released him. I think he'll be a mainstay on this team because he not only provides a spark in the Run game, he is a very very good ST player. He blocked a punt last season. Apparently we let him go because we has hurt n we didn't have a roster spot but we TOLD him when he got healthy we'd bring him back. If Chris Perry goes down and with Kenny Irons being shelved, he could be a 3DRB. He did a lot with the limited carries he received last year too.

Personally, I'd like to see them give him a shot in the return game but unfortunately that doesn't seem like its happening.

Woohoo. Good Matt Ryan news!!!!!

Quarterback Matt Ryan ran with the first team offense for part of Wednesday's practice and led the group to a late touchdown.

Head Coach Mike Smith said the practice schedule allows for multiple quarterbacks to work with the first string during Russell Falcons Training Camp.

Wednesday was Ryan's day.

And he took advantage.

The third-overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft needed just three plays during the final team period before he found Roddy White deep down the left side for a touchdown. He also led the offense in a goal line setting and pushed the team out from its own 3 yard line.

In a two-minute drill, Ryan found White again for a touchdown. The play, which was the last of Wednesday's practice, was highlight worthy for White; he plucked the ball from the air after it bounced off Chris Houston's helmet.

"We want to make sure guys are getting in different situations and I think you guys saw how we did it today," Smith said. "Chris (Redman) started one period, the next period was Joey (Harrington) and then it was Matt."

Ryan showed command of the pocket and made several types of throws. He even scrambled up the middle of the field for a few yards during the two-minute drill. He also demonstrated a particularly strong connection with White.

"I'm starting to get a better feel with those guys," the rookie said of his receivers. "There's a number of guys I'm starting to get a good feel with. That's the beauty of camp..."

Smith said the team isn't close to making decisions about the quarterback competition.

"I don't know there's a set time in terms of what we're going to do as far as making a decision," the coach said. "I think the time frame can move and change based on how the players perform. We want to give everyone an opportunity to go out there and compete."

Prolly shoulda mentioned this earlier as he has been raved about ever since coming over from the Saints, but CB David Jones from Wingate University has been excellent. Coaches seem to think he will be our 3rd Corner maybe even as early as this year(Deltha O'Neal is slotted at that position now) based on his performance thus far. The Bengals jumped all over him when the Saints let him go and he could be a solid contributor this season. I would not mind him taking O'Neals spot in the slightest. In fact, I'd love him to do just that. Only time will tell but he has impressed beyond belief thus far.

Any Saints fans know how Meachem is looking? Gotta keep tabs on potential fantasy sleepers.

Looking pretty darn good from all accounts. Granted, compared to last year that isn't saying much but he's even getting praise from Sean Payton which doesn't happen very often. I see him at least starting off being our 3rd WR depth-chart wise.

The exciting news in cowboys camp has been Spears getting time at NT...this allows our best DL Ratliff to move over to DE and Tank to start at NT....now this move isn't permanent according to coaches...but the past 2 days they've played strictly at their (new) positions. If this does turn into more of a full time thing..this is the best way for dallas to get it's top 3 DL on the field at once...and move Spears down the depth chart a slot.

My guess is this will be used more against teams where pressure is a huge issue...against a team like the Pats/Colts..but against a team like the vikings we'll probably use the base set from last year.

Well I am a Penn State fan.....

I was at steelers training camp yesterday Mendenhall and Gary Russel looked really good.

Dennis Dixon didn't look good at all not getting rid of the ball quick enough and throwing near ints. I think the Steelers might have been better served drafting Josh Johnson.(I wonder how he is looking at Bucs camp)

James Harrison beat Marvel Smith quite a few times.

Santonio was open all day but Ben wasn't throwing him the ball. It caused Holmes to look back at been after a play and shrug his shoulders.

Heath Miller made a beautiful catch on the sidelines.

Sweed made a nice grab over the middle, I guess the report of his injury was greatly exaggerated.

We have a good Offensive line with two elite players in Jammal Brown and Jahri Evans. Our O-Line is not going to dominate but will work well as a unit. On the other hand, I think our D-Line is going to be something special so I wouldn't worry. :)

I mean, would you worry about Brown who is in the best shape of his life and is out there getting pancaked by some of our D-Linemen? The Defense is fired up and on a misson.

And Sedrick Ellis is a monster. Whoever is not counting on this guy being a force are in for a rude awakening. He is already getting past double teams of the starting O-Line, putting a lot of pressure on Brees, getting him frustrated but in a good way. In the Scrmmage today, Ellis had 3 tackles, 1 pressure, 1 knockdown and 1 sack. I can't wait to see him the the preseason.

Good to hear it, New Orleans is one team I picked to have a huge 2008 as a bounceback season. Vilma, Porter, Ellis, and McCray added to that defense should do the trick if they stay healthy. McAllister coming back, Meachum getting better, and Jeremy Shockey on offense will bring it back to an elite unit too I think.

Scrimmage:

The defense dominated play early on with Julius Peppers and Gary Gibson recording sacks on two of the first three plays from scrimmage.

Interesting point here:
NOTABLE: If there’s one positive – and I use that term very loosely -- surrounding the Smith suspension it’s probably that it happened when it did.

"I think if this would have happened Wednesday before we went to San Diego it would have a bigger impact than it will now,” said tackle Jordan Gross. “I mean, we've got a month to prepare for the San Diego Chargers and a month to know that Steve's not going to be in the lineup.”

Gross had an interesting take on Smith, whom he also played with at Utah.
“I've always said you can't love Steve on the field and hate him off the field,” Gross said. “What makes Steve a good player is that competitive edge and that fire. So, everybody loses their cool.

I'm not justifying what happened, but you know, we're out there competing against the same guys every day. I think he just lost his cool. He'd be the first one to admit that."

DeAngelo Williams is playing like a man with a purpose. In two possessions he ran five times for 25 yards, which was right at his 2007 average of 5 yards per carry. He also caught a pass for a 12-yard gain.

Carolina’s top four defensive tackles sat out with injuries, meaning Gibson and Stephen Williams worked with the first-team defense. Also, rookie defensive tackle Nick Hayden and Michael Marquardt, picked up earlier this week, saw extra action.

The bolded part scares the bedjayzus out of me.

Some Raider news courtesy of Jerry McDonald. Winners and Losers so far...

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008 at 10:09 am in Oakland Raiders, Preseason (2005).

Thoughts on who’s leading, trailing and treading water as the Raiders take their first day off after 10 days and 15 practice sessions of training camp, keeping in mind what the coaches are seeing and what I’m seeing could be two entirely different things.

The following are in no particular order and are random observations, not an all-inclusive list . . .

LEADERS

RB Darren McFadden: There’s a good chance the three teams that passed on McFadden are going to be sorry they did. I was skeptical when Lane Kiffin said the Raiders would have traded up to get him. Now I believe it.

Not only does McFadden’s speed bring to mind Bo Jackson and Napoleon Kaufman, but he’s got better hands than either, is a quick study and does everything with a smile on his face. He is even better than they thought he was.

CB Nnamdi Asomugha: I’ve scoffed at the comparisons with Mike Haynes. Not now. He looks that good.

DE Derrick Burgess: Even allowing for the Raiders’ weakness at the tackle spots, Burgess looks terrific, and moving him around to get him singled up is the smart move.

C Jake Grove: He is bigger, stronger and has seized the opportunity to become the starter. The Raiders thought they had an elite center when the drafted him. Maybe they were right after all _ as long as his knee holds up.

WR Todd Watkins: Has caught everything in sight, and it’s not as if he’s working against chopped liver, getting his share of reps against Asomugha and DeAngelo Hall. Stands a real chance of making the team.

RB Justin Fargas: If anything, McFadden’s presence has him running even harder.

QB Andrew Walter: Rather than take a “woe is me” approach, Walter has had his best passing camp and has the upper hand against Marques Tuiasosopo to back up JaMarcus Russell.

Coach Lane Kiffin: He’s taking the perfect approach to coaching under Al Davis _ he’s doing it his own way, sticking to his belief system and assuming that if he gets fired, he will get another job. His brutal honesty is refreshing.

Receivers coach James Lofton: Whether you want to believe it or not, he was hired before Kiffin ever gave his approval. And you know what? The boss got this one right. An extremely impressive coach, and was key in recruiting Drew Carter, whose performance so far is also worthy of being a camp leader.

DE Jay Richardson: Making a case to be more than an end on first-and-10 and short-yardage. May be emerging as a pass rusher.

SS Gibril Wilson and SS Michael Huff: Forget the talk about them being interchangable. Kiffin said Wilson has been in the box 90 percent of the time and should provide the Raiders with their best true strong safety play since they returned to Oakland. And Huff, liberated, is making some plays.

TE Zach Miller: Has caught everything thrown his way, has a knack for finding open spaces. If Miller isn’t kept in to block, he should catch 60 passes. Wouldn’t surprise me at all if he made the Pro Bowl some day.

WR Ronald Curry: New body, can still make the tough catches.

TREADING WATER

QB JaMarcus Russell: Other than a fabulous Friday night, Russell has had both good moments and bad.

It’s OK that he’s treading water because that’s all Kiffin and Co. are looking for in 2008. They’re not asking Russell to win games. They’re just asking him not to lose them. Expect a lot of conservatism and checkdowns as he learns the ropes _ a solid plan.

RB Michael Bush: Kiffin talked up his goal line smash with Kirk Morrison, but there’s still a question as to whether he is more Earl Campbell or Earl Cooper. Great hands, but runs too upright. Keep in mind he’ hasn’t played for two years and by camp’s end he should be better.

DT Tommy Kelly: Needs to be in better shape, but still has a month to get there. Is working diligently on cardio machines. Noticeably gassed during Saturday practiced when forced to be on the field 10 consecutive plays.

LBs Ricky Brown, Robert Thomas and Sam Williams: Brown got first shot at strongside linebacker and did well, but not so well that they simply left him there. Now its’ Thomas turn. Williams has the ideal skill set, but is too fragile.

CB DeAngelo Hall: Probably unfair to have him in this category, but Asomugha looks so good Hall will get plenty of work this year. And he will give up a lot of completions, if the early part of camp is any indication. The key will be if he makes so many plays it doesn’t matter.

LT Kwame Harris: Every time someone gets by him it will be magnified. Showing signs of improvement as a pass blocker. Shows signs of being able to do some real damage downfield in zone blocking scheme. Harris’ advantage lies in the fact that line coach Tom Cable is one of the best around.

TRAILERS

WR Javon Walker: The whole “retirement” thing is troubling, but let’s face it, erratic behavior often comes with the position. The bigger concern is whether Walker can still play at anything approaching the level the Raiders expected.

The hope is Walker can get his legs under him and regain his form. Right now, he’s not close. Perhaps patience will pay off and giving Walker time to work things out could prove beneficial, and Al Davis looks like a genius for signing him and urging him not to retire. Or perhaps Walker gives it a few more weeks and retires if he doesn’t have it in him before Week 1.

If that were to occur, and Walker repays the bonus, it will be credited to the Raiders cap in the 2009 league year and they’re off the hook.

If he stays on the team and plays as has, this is the worst free agent signing since Larry Brown.

DT Terdell Sands: Is professing a new attitude and dedication, but still isn’t in top condition and has had his left knee drained. Already. With a player his size, it could be a maintenance issue all year.

T Mario Henderson: The hope was he would challenge Cornell Green and become a starter. It isn’t happening.

G Paul McQuistan: Has taken more laps than Jeff Gordon at the Daytona 500 because of repeated false starts.

CB Michael Waddell: There was a cornerback named Levon Rowan last season who was scorched daily by virtually every receiver. Waddell is this year’s Rowan, but in his defense, receivers have made a number of great catches against him.

WR Arman Shields: Has had some excellent practice sessions but because of knee problems could wind up on I.R. if he can’t put practices together.

DE Trevor Scott: Listed at 255 pounds, you see him out of uniform and he doesn’t look that big. Having problems disengaging from linemen _ even Henderson.

S Greg Wesley, DE Greg Spires and C John Wade: Three thirty-something veterans who won’t be retained unless they play fairly prominent roles. Wesley has missed considerable time with back spasms, Spires is 34 and not making many plays, and Wade might be out if he can’t beat out Grove because Chris Morris can play both guard and tackle.

CB John Bowie: The guy they got for Randy Moss was doing little of note and then injured a knee.

LB Grant Irons: Comeback bid may be derailed by hamstring which has kept him off the field.

Talking about the QB's for the Dolphins. According to this, Beck's played himself out of contention for the QB Job and Henne's been the most impressive, but that doesn't say much. How's Brady Quinn looking now haha.

Some news and things from Bears TC;

- Rumors from a close friend of Jason McKie's that the Bears are pushing hard for Favre, just keeping it close to their vest. And yes, this guy is legit because Jason came over after practice and talked to him. Don't know how legit the info is though

- Hester had ice on his hamstring and foot and was liming a little bit. I got a media pass to go to Training Camp and was able to talk to him after practice at the dining hall. Didn't seem too serious but you never want to see the Windy City Flyer limping

- The backup PR guys are horrible. Graham, Bennett, and I believe McBride were taking kicks and they looked very uncomfortable. Lets just say we are struck if Hester gets hurt, ha

- OL did a nice job in pass blocking but got overpowered in run blocking. Forte didn't have a lot of room to run. Tommie Harris is a man amongst boys out there, they can't handle him, even with double teams

- I love watching Mike Brown play, always talking and coaching on and off the field. Hopefully he can stay healthy. Running joke among the camera guys and writers was that it's Day 12 and he's still on the field

- Devin Hester really is ridiculous. If the guy keeps refining his route running and gets adjusted to playing WR, he's going to be a monster IMO. Tillman was extremely frustrated trying to cover him. He got burned time and time again, but I can't really say anything bad about Peanut, Devin is one of the fastest and quickest players in the NFL. He made 3 or 4 incredible plays today

- Heard Orton outplayed Grossman on Friday Night at Soldier Field. Well I guess you could call today the Sexy Rexy Show. He outplayed Orton substantially, even with media guys who didn't like Rex were pretty amazed at his play. Rex was on point with pretty much all his throws except for one or two, both were pressured by the DL though. He still throws one of the best deep balls I've seen in person when he sets his feet. Made good decisions (no INT's or fumbles today), checked down when need be, and stepped up in the pocket. Orton was solid as well but some of his passes were flat out terrible, like 10 yards from it's target down field. His medium and short passes were perfect but his long ones down the field were terrible. I guess you can chalk one up for Rexy today in the QB Derby.

- Really like Harrison at DT. Coaches were getting on him about giving more effort but he stuffed the run 3 or 4 straight plays and got some good pass rush. I think he's going to be a load in a year or two

- Olsen made the catch of the day, a one-handed twisting 180 degree catch on the sideline that brought the crowd to its feet. He's so smooth for a guy his size, looked really good

- Booker had a nice day as well, which is good to see since he's been pretty absent in TC so far

- Really like Bennett...Again like Harrison in a year or two he'll be an impact WR. Very quick off the line, can get passed the jam, runs good routes, has great hands, and can go up and get it. Plus he's got some nice speed as well.

- You have to see Forte in person to see how smooth he is. Nice and quick with his cuts, north and south type runner who doesn't hesitate. Runs great routes and has great hands out of the backfield. And has a nice burst to get passed defenders.

- Funniest part from today was Tommie Harris during a water break lining up in front of a pad on the ground. He took off out of his 3 point stance and swan dived right onto the pad, it gave everyone a good chuckle.

More later, gotta go eat.

I guess ill just quote this

Corey Lynch, drafted in the 5th Round by the Bengals from App State, has been making plays all over the field and according to some may push for the starting FS job currently held by Marvin White. Now, I don't expect that to happen but he definitely could make some noise this year a la Chinedum Ndukwe last season. I'm kind of skeptical on his coverage abilities but time will tell on those. At the least he should be a special teams stalwart.

Finally read some Dolphins practice stuff.

Josh McCown is listed as the #1 QB atm but it could change before the game (starter is likely to be named Thursday).

Jake Long is dominating (yay).

Derek Hagan is outperforming Ernest Wilford and might start.

Donald Thomas looks to have the RG spot locked up, Shawn Murphy is really struggling and getting overpowered.

Kendell Langford keeps getting talked about by just about everybody and is getting 1st team reps and has a chance to start. Matt Roth is getting some looks at OLB because of this.

Whoever replaces Jason Taylor is going to suck.

I think it would be best to start McCown before Henne/Beck. McCown has the mobility to better handle the pressure that the Miami line will be giving up. Good to hear Jake Long is doing good. And im glad to hear another Hampton player is doing good. First Jerome Mathis, then Justin Durant, now Kendall Langford.

Peppers is back to his probowl form. Stopping a reverse for a 15 yard loss today.

The receiver is generally about ten yards behind the line of scrimmage when they take a hand off for a reverse. They tried to cut around peppers by going a bit deeper and didn't respect his speed. 15 yard might be an exaggeration, its what Steve Reed mentioned. I wasn't physically there. I'm a few thousand miles away.

Keith Rivers practiced for the first time this morning and DC Mike Zimmer was giddy about his performance. Even with missing this much time he was impressed with what Rivers remembered from OTA's as well as how quickly he picked up the new stuff. He will probably even play in the 1st preseason game Monday Night.

Also, praise continues for OLB Brandon Johnson who was acquired from the Arizona Cardinals. Even with Keith Rivers coming to camp to become our starting WLB, LBers coach Jeff Fitzgerald says,"He showed us something. It's not like he's going to go on the shelf by any stretch of the imagination. As a matter of fact, we've got to try and get him on the field some kind of way."

I tend to be skeptical and take a wait and see approach to reports coming out of camp, but it seems as if Tony McDaniels is the star of the camp on the defensive side of the ball. The 6'7" 310 lb bears an uncanny resemblance to Marcus Stroud. He came out of school too early and a combination of injury concerns and off field issues made him go undrafted. But he's flourishing in Jacksonville right now and could combine with John Henderson to make Jacksonville's middle just as dominant as it was when Stroud was in his prime.

I think its pretty safe to say that David Jones will be our third corner this season. Our third corner meaning that he has supplanted incumbent Deltha O'Neal. Not bad for a 5th round draft pick who was cut by the Saints.

Sounds interesting but he's kind of too tall to be a dominant DT, a stout guard around the 6"3 range will always have leverage.

Um, Stroud was 6'6" and Henderson is 6'7" as well. You can be tall and still play defensive tackle if you use proper technique. You just can't stand straight up right out of your stance. It hurts nose tackles more than defensive tackles as well, because they have to command a double team and hold the point of attack for two different gaps.

Henderson and Stroud have some of the best technique in the NFL, All I'm saying is, if a kid who's 6-6 had technique issues in the past (he went undrafted after all), he might take a little longer to transfer over to be a good starter that's all I meant.
