View Full Version : Anyone Making a Case for DROY?

I haven't seen too many defensive rookies making an impact... The one name that I seem to see more often than most is Chris Horton, a 2nd day pick by the Skins. What are the odds of a guy like Horton winning that award as a SS?

I've heard the name Cason getting thrown around. "Blanketing coverage" was a description.
That's Antoine by the way.

Yeah, I watched him pretty closely in the 3 Charger games I saw... While I think Cason has been ok i'm not sure he has a case quite yet for DROY....

It'll probably be Keith Rivers.

I'm gonna be a homer and throw Kendall Langford into the discussion.

He's started all 3 games for us this season and has 8 tackles and 2 sacks already as a 3-4 DE.

And he's always pressuring the QB. He is constantly on the guys ass.

He has also made a few very very clutch plays--an interception and tackles on the goal line and the like. Plus a killer forced fumble in the 4th quarter of the opener. He's just a natural corner and fun to watch. Great sense for the ball and some legit physical play.

Jerod Mayo - 25 tackles
Week 1 - 6
Week 2 - 7
Week 3 - 12

If he keeps improving or stays near 12, he could win. Looks very athletic.

To be fair, there was no shortage on opportunites against Miami. He does look pretty good though.

I'd give it to Horton based on what I've seen, but the season is young. I think Rivers will win it, and I'll also throw Sed Ellis' name out there.

LBs have always been safe bets for DROY, that being said I like Rivers' chances on a defense with very few playmakers around him.

Those 3 seem to be the front-runners.

Horton has now earned the starting role beside Landry so look for him to start racking up even bigger numbers. He was NFL Defensive player of the week in week 2 and had another big game against the Cowboys. I'd put him in that list.

I doubt Horton will win because he is a safety and a 7th rounder so imma go with Keith Rivers just because as the season goes on and his team brakes down he is going to be spending alot more time on the field and will have alot of chances o make plays

Jarod Mayo has been tearing it up, and he's in a scheme almost perfect for him, I like him right now and think he can improve on his numbers so far.

No way should Cason be considered..... 3rd string CBs should not be considered.. He isn't even a starter... Sure he has Jammer and Cromartie in front of him, by the way Cromartie has been average this year getting beat lots of times. But I wouldn't have Cason as the best rookie CB, as he isn't even a starter... I would have starting rookie CBs over him right now, as starting is harder then 3rd string, because teams try to pick on you when you are a starter. When you are a 3rd string the team can get you away from teams challenging you. I would have Dwight Lowery over Cason so far, Lowery has started every game, and has done a good job for a rookie starting right away. Lowery just doesn't have any INTs, but he still has key PBUs. Sure Lowery has been beaten a few times this year, but like I said its harder for a rookie CB starting right away, then for a rookie CB to play as a 3rd stringer. As you are constantly being challenged as a starter. Especially when you have a CB like Revis on the other side who is locking down every WR he faces so far.

Starting safety. I love his range and ability to cover a large part of the field, 5+ picks is not out of the question and if so he is a legitimate candidate.

SeanTaylorRIP
10-02-2008, 11:04 AM
Because Landry is the ultimate safety net covering the entire field Horton gets to roam around and make plays, which he does best. Don't be surprised to see him get 5+ picks, 2 or 3 sacks as well as a bunch of tackles.

Curtis Lofton: Solo tackles.

Game 1: 2
Game 2: 5
Game 3: 4
Game 4: 7

He has been improving so much every game. He is becoming a huge factor in our run defense. If he continues this progression, he could end up with it.

Right now though, it has to be Mayo. I dont even think Rivers has a case personally.

I agree that Horton's success is a big benefactor to playing next to Landry.

It's a good tandem to have.

While the stats don't really show it Glenn Dorsey has starting to come on that being said he is not in the race as of now.

I have also been impressed with both Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr CB's for the Chiefs I look for them to be a nice combo once the Chiefs improve their pass rush.

I know this guys a long shot to win because he was an undrafted free agent but Dwight Lowery for the jets has played very well in the first four weeks. Horton has to be in the conversation as well as Mayo. I think that Mayo will have the best chance to win the award.

Hmmm... If Talib keeps it up I think I'd give it to him. Theres no dominating rookie LB who racks up tackles like its nobodies business, so I think it'll go to the DB who makes the most plays on the ball or the D lineman who harasses quarterbacks the most...

Right now its Horton by a lot though I think.

Keith has played very well but he hasnt rly gotten the chance to make too many big plays in coverage or on blitzes from what I've seen. He's not on the field on third downs because we bring in Brandon Johnson to play LB in pass situations. Hes a lot better against the run then I had imagined though.

One problem with Mayo is that when the Patriots go to a 4 man front its Bruschi playing inside so he's not getting as many chances to make P-Willy numbers, not that he probably would anyway.

I'm sticking this in this thread because there's nowhere else for me to geek out over Antoine Cason:

He had another great game against the Pats that just doesn't show up on the stat sheet: a monstrous stop on 3rd and short where he completely blew up the run. This is a cornerback! He also did a bang up job on Wes Welker when he covered him, and made some quality tackles to prevent first downs. As a nickelback he's probably not going to qualify for the end of the season awards but I'll be damned if he hasn't had a big impact on the Charger D all season long.

He's not behind Mayo by any stretch. Not a chance. Mayo is okay, but Lofton has been thumping people all over the field. He hasn't come up with any turnovers yet, but he will. The way he hits people is going to end up forcing the ball out on more than one occasion. He's never going to be a MLB with 5picks or anything like that, but he's more than solid, he's an enforcer. Right now Rivers > Lofton, but if Lofton continues his pace he's going to have to be right near the top. No doubt above Mayo.
