Greg Hardy will miss the rest of the season, so he won't be playing for Ole Miss against the Vols this Saturday. Bittersweet for me, because you hate to see a player go down and I was looking forward to seeing him play.

Saw Voodoo post that OL Jawuan James gave a verbal commitment to the Vols. Huuuuge get for them, and means that Kiffin and Co. have pulled in 4* James, 4* WR Markeith Ambles, 4* DE J.C. Copeland, and 3* LB Michael Taylor out of Georgia. Kiffin made it a point that of all the SEC teams we faced this season, that Georgia was the one he wanted the most. It was most important as far as recruiting goes. So to go into GA and get 4 of it's best players is spectacular, and blowing UGA out in Knoxville has a hand in that.

Tennessee football players arrested

3 freshmen charged with attempted armed robbery

http://www.tennessean.com/article/20091112/SPORTS0601/91112013/Tennessee+football+players+arrested+

Here we go again, i thought all of this was done since there hasn't been any arrests in a while, I hope Kiffin kicks them off the team and sets an example but losing Nu'Keese Richardson and starting safety Janzen Jackson would be a pretty big hit

Haven't been able to go to Volnation any today. Anyways, I hope that if they're proven guilty they're kicked off the team. We'll see what Kiffin is made of with this situation. It's easy to kick out Fulmer's 4 and 5 star recruits, but will he kick out his own?

I think it would show some serious stones and set a major precedent.

Jackson was released after his bail was reduced to 0. It was NuKeese and Edwards who committed the attempted robbery. Jackson was in the car, and only told them that they had to leave. Most he could be charged with would be accessory.

I say suspend Jackson for the rest of the season. Maybe bring him back for the bowl game. Dismiss NuKeese and Edwards.

I haven't been able to get on Volnation either. Their servers are ****.

Semi-good news it sounds like.

I agree with this. Letting him play in the bowl would have to be for outstanding behavior between now and then.

Tell me about it. NSD and the day Bryce Brown committed were awful as well.

Nope! Well, Gerhart is up there.

Hardesty: 265 rush, 1,307 yards, 4.9 YPC, and 12 TD's.

He's 2nd in the SEC in rushing yards now, and tied with Mark Ingram for 2nd in TD's with 12 (Tebow is 1st with 13 TD's, so t-1st among RB's). Not to mention his receiving totals. I'd take Hardesty over any RB in the SEC, including Ingram. I'd like to see Ingram run for 1,300 yards behind two walk on OL's.

Really? I saw they just picked up a commitment from a JUCO LB this weekend, but I was pretty sure he was the only one so far for the 2010 class, unless you're counting Jacques Smith who I think will be an end.

I know this is an old post, but I just wanna say that Jacques is a beast. I technically live in Ooltewah, TN, and 'Ques attends Ooltewah High School. I've gone to see him in person, and this guy is a man amongst boys. And OHS is in like Class 5A or 6A. Dude's gonna be a great player for the Vols, no matter if he plays DE or LB.

Oh! I clinched a Playoff spot in the SWDC Fantasy Football league. Not sure what my final seed will be. Playing SuperMcGee in the final game, and he's currently #1 and blowing away his competition. Seriously, I don't think he's scored less than 100 points all year. So glad I clinched my spot already, lol. I swept my division too, and hopefully I can pull the upset and improve my seeding! :D

I agree. The cool thing is, everybody has a state they excel in in the SEC, aside from Monte who can go to any living room in America. Wilson's was Louisiana and Mississippi, but that's Ed Orgeron's area as well and he's better. Plus, with Lane being a former WR coach, I don't think the loss would be bad.

Losing Gran, Orgeron, or Thompson would be killer though. Gran needs a raise. He recruits Florida, and does so very, very well. FSU is rumored to be after him and Lance Thompson. I think Orgeron stays. He's highly paid, is Assistant HC/Recruiting Coordinator, and said he relished the opportunity of learning under Monte. Thompson makes upwards of $300,000, so a lateral move would require a raise on top of that already hefty contract. Gran only makes around $150,000 (maybe less, not sure), so he seems the most likely additional loss if he's not given a raise. Hopefully they do so and retain him.

Another Tennessee investigation by the NCAA. Lane Kiffin must really be in Urban Meyer's head. :D

Kiffin spares no expense here. The main cause of this new investigation is having Vols co-eds be with the recruits, and perhaps "influence" them. Awesome job, only in college can you pull this off

TitanHope
12-10-2009, 04:38 PM
Biggest reason why I like pro football over college: CFB fans. I just can't communicate with them. Pro fans are so much more logical and realistic. CFB fans from 50 different schools will tell you why their school is the best and that every player should want to play there, and they'll believe every word they say. The bias is awful, and usually a smart poster like BF51 will just at the thought of Lane Kiffin being in trouble without any legitimate proof to back it up - yet he's a fan of integrity? Riiiiiiight.

Then, when Vols fans try to look at things as how they really are, we get accused of being dismissive, etc.

The hostess thing is a minor violation at worst. They're not gonna find anything on Kiffin that links him to sending these girls, and a coed giving her number to an incoming player so that they can text each other isn't a major violation. It's funny easy it is for a single clever writer to misrepresent one quote and pull the wool over the eyes of so many people.

I'm a fan of integrity, and Lane Kiffin is a little *****, so yeah, I hope they get crushed.

I find it hypocritical that you are a fan of integrity and call someone you dont even know a *****. JMIO.

I think the fact that we've heard basically zilch since the whole thing started speaks volumes.

I think some people think the NCAA is some all-powerful power who send out investigators in black suits and ties who wear sunglasses to do their bidding. When in fact, the range of their ability stops at bullying a college athlete and suspending him for a year. They can't force credit card companies to pony up a customer's charge history, or get a hotel or gas station to fork over any records (And that's if there's even a paper trail, which I doubt. If Kiffin sent them, he'd have given them cash and not involved credit cards). They'll have to get someone to talk, whether it's a coach, one of the hostesses, or a recruit or the recruit's family.

The only shot for a major violation would be bullying a recruit into cracking, which I doubt will happen since no one wants their name tied to this thing - especially if something scandalous went down. They don't wanna be known at their next college for being the buy who got with that hostess (Or maybe they do? I dunno). This screams "Impermissible Contact," which is a secondary violation. Of course, that's just a Vol fan using logic, which is blatant homersim outside of this thread.

And in actuality, the biggest punishment is this story coming out during the recruiting "Dead Period," where coaches can't contact recruits. So while Kiffin and the university is being slandered, they're not able to defend themselves to the recruits. Now Willis is supposedly wavering, Markeith Ambles is rumored to be looking around, and improving our standering with non-committed recruits is hampered. Plus, we've lost guys too, although that may have to do with coaching losses more than this. The effect on recruiting is worse than any secondary violation this may be.

Also...

ALL-PRO!!!

If you were AD, who would be your first 5 calls?

TitanHope

If you were AD, who would be your first 5 calls?

1. Phillip Fulmer - If he's not got a coaching job lined up, then ask him to come on in some administrative capacity to help find a new guy.

2. Will Muschamp - You gotta make the calls, even if the shot isn't as good. 'Champ may be the future, but who knows when Mack Brown retires? The resources at Tennessee and the SEC stage rivals what Texas and the Big 12 provide. It's just recruiting at Texas is sooo much easier, since the in-state talent funnels in there.

3. Jim Harbaugh - Another call ya gotta make. He's the hottest name in coaching, so offer him whatever it takes. UT will have a lot of USC money to throw at the next coach, so money isn't an issue. I don't see Stanford being able to keep up with USC, Oregon, Washington, and UCLA long term. We'll give him a bathroom on every hallway on every floor if he wants.

4. John Gruden - He's got UT ties, and I think would do good in college. Gotta buy out his ESPN contract, which wouldn't be an issue, and he's a big name who could help save the class. His intensity would help in recruiting too.

5. Gary Patterson/Chris Peterson/Skip Holtz - All have done well at their non-BCS schools, and have shown the ability to build winning programs.

How 'bout you Voodoo?

I wouldn't worry about the Harbaugh to Michigan or Muschamp to Texas or Georgia possibilities. We have to make a big name hire to help keep this class. Remember Michigan was supposedly Les Miles's dream job and he turned that down to stay at LSU. Muschamp or Harbaugh could do the same thing. I'm all for one of the two.

If you click on the "Member List" link in the bar above the forum (the one where User CP, Chat Box, Search, etc. is located), you'll go to the member list that lists ALL the posters on the forum. The posters will be sorted Alphabetically, Post Count, and Reputation and each category will be listed in 3 different columns. Automatically, the order will be Alphabetically, but if you look to the right, you'll see a column of green boxes for each poster's rep. At the top of that column, you'll see the word "Reputation" as a clickable link. If you click it, then it'll list posters from highest rep to lowest rep.

Hope that explains how. Just ask if my directions were confusing for ya, CJftw!

I'm rootin' for Bray, but if Pic-Nick can pull off a Cromptonesque improvement, then I'd be very happy. The offense will be a lot like last year in how it was heavily involved in the run-game and relied on big plays in the passing game. We're returning the entire starting WR/TE's, have Bryce Brown, David Oku, and Tauren Poole at RB, and are bringin' in an all-star WR recruiting class. I'm worried about the inside OL, but that's it. Really don't know much about Matt Sims, but I'll wait and see.

Nick Stephens had a great chemistry with Denarius Moore on the deep ball, so that'll be fun to watch at least.

Hey guys. Ya'll hear Peter Sirmon is gonna be a grad assistant at Tennessee?

DSN: Peter Sirmon to join Wilcox at Tennessee (http://www.ducksportsnews.com/blog/2010/02/dsn-peter-sirmon-to-join-wilcox-at-tennessee/)

Duck Sports News has learned that former Ducks and Tennessee Titans Linebacker Peter Sirmon has officially accepted a Graduate Assistant position at the University of Tennessee. Sirmon now joins former Duck player and Boise State Defensive Coordinator Justin Wilcox in Knoxville.

Sirmon, 32 (33 on February 18th), is a native of Walla Walla, Washington. At Walla Walla High School, Sirmon was named Washington Defensive Player of the Year by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer after leading his team to the State AAA Championship game. After a four-year letterman linebacker career at the University of Oregon, Sirmon was drafted in the fourth round by the Tennessee Titans. In 2006, Sirmon retired after playing seven years in the NFL.

Before serving as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Oregon this past season, Sirmon was Linebackers Coach at Central Washington University for the 2008 season.

Feel free to wait until this information is “official”, if you like.

But I have a pretty good source.

He’s my brother-in-law.

Good luck in Tennessee, Peter (and happy birthday).

Well…wait…except for one game next year.

Pretty cool! I think Sirmon could make a pretty good LB Coach one day. His physical talent may have been lacking, but mentally, he had it down.

Thread over on Volnation saying it's being reported that starting LT Aaron Douglas has officially left the team. Panic mode for 2010 officially beginning to set in. :/

A wise man once said: What.The.****.

I just saw it on Yahoo!...can't believe it. What the hell are these kids thinking? First Bryce Brown, a guy who was going to be the feature RB for the next 2 seasons at least, and now Aaron Douglas, a Freshman All-American who by all calculations was on his way towards becoming a high NFL Draft pick.

Here's the Yahoo! article: Dooley: Douglas leaving UT program - VolQuest (http://tennessee.rivals.com/barrier_noentry.asp?ReturnTo=&sid=&script=content.asp&cid=1067428&fid=&tid=&mid=&rid=)

One thing that caught my eye:

Dooley, however, said Douglas' decision to leave doesn't impact the Vols because they've already been operating without the athletic offensive tackle.

"It doesn't do anything to me because he was never here. Every decision we've made. I mean, I've never even seen Aaron jump over a bag. So there's been no change as far as what we're coaching and the personnel decision we've been making," Dooley said.

*shakes head* Is he going through some sort of traumatic personal issues or something? I just don't get it...

I liked this statement by Dooley though:

But, the coach reiterated, both Brown and Douglas would continue to receive the university's support moving forward.

"I have not had any discussions with Bryce. But let me say this: I also told Bryce, just like I'm telling Aaron, we're for them as people," Dooley said. "And so I'm not going to deny Bryce access to our academic support. Any personal growth he needs as a person. It's just not how I am. He's not on our team, so he doesn't get any football growth but he's still a man. He's a human being. If he needs help academically or needs help spiritually, we're going to support him as a person."

Dooley - The Anti-Kiffin. Even with Brown and Douglas leaving, I still like this coaching staff. Hopefully they rock the recruiting trail again this year.

Ok, so my back-and-forth with Sniper in the SEC Thread has reminded me why I love pro football way more than college football, but I've been trying to catch up on the Vols and recruiting and stuff. Especially with all the conference expansions going on.

It looks like WR Da'Rick Rogers, DB Eddrick Loften, and DT John Brown are all academically eligible. They've brought in a JUCO C named Gooch (Ha-ha! /Sebben&Sebben), who could start this fall. The 2011 Recruiting Class...well, the Vols have two guys...so yeah.

The Vols are a young team. Lets leave it at that.

Lookin' forward to Florida. They're nowhere near the team Oregon is, so if the team that was in the 1st QTR shows up, it could be a good game.

Still not sold on Simms. At all. Looks like he's getting the Crompton treatment, playcalling wise. Looked like the Florida gameplan, except without a beastmode Hardesty.

CashmoneyDrew

I don't remember us throwing the ball over the middle at all. Am I wrong about that? And why not when we have Stocker, and big receivers like Da'Rick, Milton and Hunter?

TitanHope
09-12-2010, 12:10 AM
You're right. If they passed it to the middle of the field, it was a check down to a RB...one of which was a drop...

But yeah, I wanna see me more of Stocker, DaRick, and Hunter. And quit using Denarius Moore as a possession receiver. He's a deep threat, and his hands are suspect as it is. We missed Gerald Jones in that regard, and should've used Stocker more for possession plays. Convert some of those 3rd downs and their margin of victory is a few scores lower.

TitanHope
09-18-2010, 06:41 PM
OL is still too inexperienced, and pass-protection got worse as the game progressed. It'll be a very good unit one day, and while they'll take their lumps this year, it'll pay off in the future.

Simms needs to work on his decision making. When given time, the dude can play. But when he's pressured, he needs to be smart and decisive. His two TD's came on blown coverages, so I don't think we should pay him on the back for being competant and hitting a wide open WR. His INT's were killer, and the one in the endzone was a game-changer.

WR's were good. I think Hunter should start. Not sure what's holding Da'Rick back. I'd like an "above the rim" passing game with Stocker, Hunter, and Da'Rick. Just throw it up to those guys and they can bring it down with their size and jumping ability. Throw Milton in the equation too, and obviously Denarious Moore is the senior so he should play.

Poole and Oku were ok. Not as good as last time, but it's a better DEF. Poole's stiff arm on UF CB was epic!

The announcers talked about the pass-rush, but I didn't see it. Little pressure from the DT's, and the DE's weren't much better.

Whoever the other LB is besides Reveiz and Thompson needs some work. They put him in coverage, but he's not holding it well enough. Not sure if it's Lathers or Frazier.

CB's gave up too many 3rd down conversions (I think it was Eric Gordon on Moore so many times), but they had to cover a while. Hard to do that.

Janzen Jackson played well. Prentiss Wagner is non-existant.

If there's a silver lining, it's that my boner for Justin Hunter just got an Enzyte caliber boost. A ton of recruits were visiting too, so they got to see a fun game in Neyland.

Ugh, this Vol team is killing me. Players like Art Evans, Prentiss Waggoner, Dallas Thomas, Gooch shouldn't even sniff the two-deep.

Our talent and depth are severely depleted, however, this coaching staff still looks questionable at times as well.

I know over on Volnation they pretty much either blame it entirely on the staff or entirely on the roster situation, but I can't help but think there's a definite mixture of both going on.

I'm not saying Dooley should be fired at all, but they do have me worried and wondering if they are the long-term solution sometimes.

1) What happens if a school over signs?

3) Out of those guys you posted Voodoo, who has the best chance to sign?

1) They can either let kids out of their scholarship to attend a school elsewhere(I know LSU did this with a recruit last year). They can greyshirt a kid which basically means the player pays his own way for the first semester of school and then picks up a scholarship after that. Or they can place some kids in JUCO or prep school.

2) A soft commit is usually given to a player that is wavering in their commitment or is taking visits to other schools. A hard commit is basically a player that people have a good idea on in terms of them not backing out or wavering on their commitment.

3) - LB, Lamar Dawson
- LB, Curt Maggitt
- OT, Antonio Richardson

50/50 on Gabe Wright.
Leon Mackey and Timmy Jernigan are long-shots.

Since you're new to recruiting you should check out Volnation's recruiting forum. It's where I get 90% of my info. Only bad thing is there are a ton of annoying idiots over there.

EDIT: My favorite recruit so far has to be Marlin Lane, he reminds me of Jammal Lewis and Arian Foster. I can't wait to see how big he gets.

104.5 had Antonio Richardson on the radio today and he sounds like a great kid. Our offensive class combined with our freshmen from last year are gonna be deadly.

I just hope our JUCOs on defense pan out this year because we're going to need them.

I'm worried about this year's starters at linebacker. It will probably be our weak link on the team.

DL Coach Chuck Smith is gone. Lance Thompson will take over the DL, and they've upgraded Peter Sirmon to LB Coach.

But if Smith becomes Titans DL Coach, then I'll be happy!

True, I like Bruce as a person, I do. And he does some great things as a coach, but I just feel he's going to be limited in those things once the 'AA hammer comes down. Plus as a former and still current basketball playing junkie I've always been more partial to the more low-key/in-game coaches.

It's probably personal bias because of my ties to him, but I'd love to see Rick Byrd get the gig. He deserves a bigger platform after what he's done at Belmont.

Any hardcore UT fan mind going over the depth chart and incoming recruits with me... Best players...strengths weaknesses etc.

Tennessee's 2011 Recruiting Class - Rivals (http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/commitments/2011/Tennessee-71)

Highest rated guys are WR DeAnthony Arnett, DB Byron Moore, and OL Antonio Richardson. But, the biggest impact will probably come from JUCO transfer DT Maurice Couch. Also high hopes for LB/DE Curt Maggit, a light but super athletic pass-rusher, OT/TE Cameron Clear, a likely TE-turned-LT, and LB A.J. Johnson.

On the offensive depth chart, Tyler Bray is the likely starter after finishing off last season. He has the physical makeup to become a great QB. 6'6 with a gun, but he needs to cut down on the mental mistakes. He has the "**** it, I'm going deep!" attitude. But then again, if I had Justin Hunter galloping downfield, I'd do that too. Sometimes, he makes a throw that makes your mouth drop. Sometimes, he throws straight to the MIKE LB to lose the game. But he was just a true freshman, so the fact he didn't pull a Compton is very promising.

I think Justin Hunter is our most talented player on offense, maybe the whole team. A track and field star, the guy can outrun and outleap nearly anybody. He's pretty similar to Sidney Rice. Da'Rick Rodgers, a higher rated player coming in, will probably start opposite him. No idea who starts at TE.

At RB, there's Tauren Poole, a poor man's Montario Hardesty. Then there's Raijon Neal and a bunch of freshmen...yaaaaay.

OL looks a whole lot better, but they're still young. OC James Stone was Freshman All-American, and true freshman OT JaWuan James looks like the future at LT, after manning RT so early. JerQuari Schofield handled OG pretty well. I forget who the other guard is. And an upper classman (well, compared to the rest) played a lot too, I think LT for a good bit since he was really the only one who could. Dallas Thomas I believe it was. Someone else played the other OG too, but I forget.

Voodoo or Doughie can do defense, or specify some on offense. Or I can do it tonight. Gotta go to work now.

CashmoneyDrew

Zach fulton was the other guard. We also have marcus jackson and alex bullard coming in to help at guard. I'll go a little more in depth when im not on mobile.

As far as defense goes I'm taking a wait and see approach. I think the starting defensive line will be more talented and productive than last year's. We still have some depth issues though, especially at end.

The starting defensive line will most likely consist of sophomores Jacques Smith and Marlon Walls at end and sophomore Maurice Couch and senior Malik Jackson at tackle. Primary backups will include Corey Miller and Daniel Hood.

Linebacker looks to be the major question mark at this point. Our best linebacker Herman Lathers recently broke his leg and is out for the season. (Of course)
Austin Johnson, Greg King and Daryl Vereen are possibly the opening day starters. Two seniors and a junior in that group. Sophomore John Propst could also get a look. He's purely an inside backer so if he starts Austin Johnson would slide outside.
UT brought in three really good LBs this recruiting class even with Lamar Dawson dipping on us (un bastardo). Christian Harris and his more heralded classmates A.J. Johnson and Curt Maggitt all could see great playing time with one or two of them possibly being starters by the end of the year.

The secondary should be the strength of the defense. We return basically 5 guys with starting experience with Prentiss Waggner, Brent Brewer, Janzen Jackson, Marsalis Teague and Eric Gordon. Also we're throwing a couple of talented JUCOs in the mix with corners Izauea Lanier and Byron Moore. Then we're bringing in three very talented freshman in corner Justin Coleman (an EE), and safeties Brian Randolph and Pat Martin.

We're also still waiting to see if highly touted safety Eddrick Loften and freshman corner Tino Thomas make it in but they'd be a luxury at this point.

Special teams will hopefully be improved this year as well. UT had all kinds of problems with kick returns last year, especially at punt returning. For this the coaches signed return specialist Devrin Young. He's tiny but super quick and fast and hopefully he'll be our version of Brandon James.

Also, highly recruited Michael Palardy should take over kicking duties from the much maligned Daniel Lincoln and number one punting recruit from 2010 Matt Darr should be solid at punter.

Man, this was our OL last year:

LT Dallas Thomas [True Sophomore]
LG JerQuari Schofield [RS Freshman]
C James Stone [True Freshman]
RG Zach Fulton [True Freshman]
RT JaWuan James [True Freshman]

Hahahahahahaha! That's insane! Darin Gooch got some time too, and I think James Stone played LG for Schofield when JQ got hurt. It was Gooch at C, Stone at LG, and when JQ got healthy, they moved Stone to C. I hope they keep him there too. Posters at VN say OG is his natural position, but I think OC is the second most important OL position and I want a stud there.

I've heard great things about Marcus Jackson, and getting Bullard and his experience will make him great depth. I think Antonio Richardson could definitely play RG too. Plus, there's Mack Crowder but he looks like a natural OC.

CashmoneyDrew
06-17-2011, 11:15 PM
Dallas Thomas was a redshirt but it's all good!

I'm thinking the two-deep at OL this year will look like...

LT - Dallas Thomas (RSJR)
LG - JerQuari Schofield (RSSO)
C - James Stone (SO)
RG - Zach Fulton (SO)
RT - Jawuan James (SO)

Then the primary backups will be Antonio Richardson at tackle, Alex Bullard at center and Marcus Jackson at OG. Bullard could basically back-up every position except maybe LT.

Let's hope to God Gooch doesn't see the light of the lineup ever again. He's awful. I'm hoping he'll be one of the guys capped to make room for a bigger signing class for 2012. I know that sounds bad, but oh well.

Also, Jarrod Shaw got some time at guard last season. Especially at the start of the season and during the injuries. He was pretty bad as well.

I'm officially anti-Justin Wilcox.

The guy could stop Oregon in back-to-back seasons with the meager talent at Boise St., yet he's getting the best talent he's ever had and is being trampled in the SEC. Say what you want about the lack of talent at Tennessee compared to the rest of the SEC, but this is why Wilcox was seen as such a great hire. He got the most out of the least.

Harry Hiestand absolutely should be gone at season's end. He doesn't have a single commitment to his name in this class, and the OL is a mess. I can stomach Wilcox being given one more year with a year with more experience to prove he's a SEC DC, but not Hiestand. We shoulda seen this coming when we hired the OL Coach from the Bears.

CashmoneyDrew
11-13-2011, 01:12 AM
I'm down with Hiestand being gone. And one or two more coaches possibly... I just hope we beat Vandy (Sad, I know) so we can get those bowl practices. This young team really needs that extra work.
Also, I hope we close this recruiting class strong. We could still use a couple of more JUCOs and a playmaking running back.

CashmoneyDrew
11-27-2011, 12:07 AM
Hiestand, Chaney, and Russell to me are 100% gone.

Hinshaw and Joseph should be on the bubble as well.

I'd probably keep Wilcox at least one more year. If only because I think canning him would also lead to Sirmon leaving. And Sirmon is probably our best recruiter and I've actually been super impressed by the play of our linebackers this year all things considered.

Thompson and Baggett can definitely stay. And Dooley better win 8 games at a minimum next year.

Alright Vol fans. The time has come. Who is our next head coach?

The obvious names will be thrown around for sure. (Gruden, Patterson, Petersen, Strong, Mullen, etc.) But let's hear some other names.

I'm intrigued by Pat Fitzgerald. He's young, has a defensive background, and if you can win at Northwestern you should be able to win at UT.

I was hoping for 8-4 this year, and winning the bowl game to end 9-4. Maybe even get 10 wins. But it looks like it'll be 7-5, and with no major injuries, that is just pathetic. I wouldn't mind losses like tonight if Dooley would EVER win against a team that's projected to win against us. But he doesn't, and he doesn't even consistently beat teams we should win against. Mississippi St. is a team we should have beaten.

I like the sound of Pat Fitzgerald a lot. Gary Patterson would be my #1 guy, and perhaps he'd come if we don't ask him with just weeks before signing day. Gruden and Peterson seem like pipe dreams. I think Baylor's Art Briles should also be on the radar. David Cutcliffe, Dan Mullen, and Charlie Strong are two guys who would jump at the job in a millisecond.

As long as we don't hire a coordinator to become a 1st time HC under us. I don't want to wait while he gets his feet under him.

This is huge for me as well. It's why I detest talk of Kirby Smart. Especially since I believe Saban has his fingers more on that defense than people think.
I also don't want any more first time coordinators. I think Sal is showing that that matters at the coordinator positions in the SEC as well.
I hope whomever takes the coaching position strongly considers keeping Graham and Pittman, though.

I'm very much wondering what Hart will decide with Dooley. If we get to 7-5, and then go on to the Liberty Bowl/MCB and win it, then we'll finish 8-5. Perhaps that'll be enough for Dooley to remain, especially if Hart doesn't feel like he can get a coach he wants. I'm not sure I want to fire Dooley just to fire him.

But if he doesn't land some quality DB's and pass-rushers in recruiting, then he deserves to be fired just on principle. We need some defensive playmakers in the worst way. Kameron Miles is a nice start, especially if he can play CB, and Jason Carr looks like a prototypical 5-tech, but hopefully the staff, whoever it may be, finishes strong.

Doolander should be gone if he doesn't beat South Carolina.

It's one thing to lose because of a lack of talent, but the coaching staff made one of the most horrendous calls ever when they were down 23-10 with 3rd and 1 in Bama territory. Keep in mind, our OL is great and Marlin Lane had just had a 9-yard run. On 3rd down, they go for the big play and fail. They line up again, and then they call a timout. That's fine, cause it's an important play at a pivotal time. But what do they do next? They trot AJ Johnson out there so he can take the direct snap. WHAT IN THE WIDE WORLD OF ****? You call a timeout, and decide the best course of action is to run the ball with your ******* MLB? Did breaking a hip cause Dooley to contract an acute case of Down's syndrome?

These direct snaps to Johnson and Howard are stupid. How stupid are they? Because if you direct snap it at all, you do it to Cordarrelle Patterson. Not your overrated MLB, and not your freshman WR. You do it with the guy who is special with the ball in his hands. And all the other times, you don't get cute and you use Bray/Hunter/Cordarrelle/Rivera/Lane and this OL the way they should be played. You can't afford to out think yourselves when your defense is utter ****.

I didn't get to watch today's game. I have it on DVR. Still debating if I should watch it or not.

I have, however, been keeping an eye on the Vol motherland forums. Safe to say Gruden fever has hit an all-time high. Can't say I blame them for once.

I'm really interested in seeing what his staff would look like. I convinced myself long ago before the rest of those jackals started talking about it that Graham and most likely Pittman would be kept. Don't see Hinshaw being kept, though, like most over there seem to think. WRs haven't exactly had a stellar season. Plus Tee Martin is out there lying in wait.

I don't see Jay Gruden coming to be OC. He's gonna get HC job offers somewhere this offseason I think.

I'd toss around the idea of John L. Smith for special teams coordinator (trust in his crazy). Then I'd go beg James Wilhoit to be a GA for a couple of years. Maybe hint at him taking over as ST coach in 2-3 years when Smith retired.

I've seen Raheem Morris mentioned as possible D-Coordinator, but I'd go after a more experienced play-caller (Morris has only been a DC one year I think) with 3-4 experience. As bad as the 3-4 defense has been this season, I think our personnel still fits that system best.
Plus, I don't think it's out of the question that Morris would accept the DB coach position. Especially if he was also given some BS title like associate head coach. Washington's defense has been pretty bad this season and I wouldn't be surprised to see those coaches looking for work once this season is over.

As far as linebackers and d-line goes... ??? I honestly don't know. I guess Kevin Steele is out there in need of work.

Alright, pinch me and tell me your thoughts fellow Vols fans.

Gruden has been out of coaching for so long that I have no idea who he'd hire.

It's a tricky spot. It's gonna cost UT a pretty penny to buy out Dooley and all his assistants, but in order to hire any coach worth a damn, Hart will have to agree to let the new HC have free reign in hiring his own assistants.

TitanHope
10-27-2012, 11:48 PM
But just for the sake of conversation!

HC: Jon Gruden
OC/OL/Ass. HC: Bill Callahan
DC/LB: Kevin Steele
ST/TE: Charlie Coiner

QB: Tee Martin
RB: Jay Graham
WR: Darin Hinshaw
DL: John Palermo
DB: Raheem Morris
RC: ???

Lets say at the end of the year, Jason Garrett is fired from Dallas, and Callahan is let go. I think Gruden would go after him like a bat out of hell. Hiring him would mean Pittman would walk. Chaney leaving would mean a QB coach is needed, which Tee Martin would fill if he chose to leave USC. I think Darin Hinshaw is worth keeping, seeing as he's probably our best recruiter. I've been more than satisfied with the WR's under him.

I think Coiner is worth keeping as well.

It's the defense that I have no clue on. I think DL Coach John Palermo is the only guy who has a chance to stick around if Sal Sunseri is let go. CB Coach Derrick Ansley is a Sunseri guy (came to UT from Bama with Sunseri), and while S Coach Josh Conklin has experience as a DC and even ST's, he doesn't have many years of experience. Perhaps replace Sunseri with Steele, who also coaches LB's. Leave Palermo in place. And if Morris is let go or can leave Washington, then go after him.

That'd leave a spot for a 10th coach, which could be used for a Recruiting Coordinator. Obviously, if Gruden could nab Rodney Garner from UGA for DL/RC, then that'd be the coup of coups.

And I agree about bringing in another 3-4 DC, so perhaps Sunseri could be given another year by Gruden. The defense should improve drastically in it's second season.

Serious question, where is this Gruden stuff coming from? Rampant hope and speculation? I see that he spent his first year of coaching experience at Tennessee, but that's not very much at all. So is there actually something indicating he'd come to UT, or just a wild desire by the fanbase?

He was seen watching the UT/SCAR game today and taking notes on it. The fanbase is obviously extremely hopeful, and with Tennessee fans, the sky's the limit on speculation, but that report was basically the only spark needed to cause a massive reaction from the fanbase. Gruden also has a home in East Tennessee, and his wife is a former UT cheerleader, so they have ties to the area as well.

I won't feel one ounce of pity for him when he's let go. Not only did the team horrifically underachieve, but this is arguably the worst coaching performance over the course of a season that I've ever witnessed. It's hard for me to fathom how a team can improve in talent and still regress.
