Is the best rapper alive. Right?
http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/hiphopmediatraining/31863/best-rapper-alive-competition-feels-slim-shady/
The online contest polled users over a 5-week period. During the first week, the 64 competing rappers were paired off and users were asked to select the best 32 artists. The second week, that group of 32 lyricists was also grouped in twos and the voters picked their favorite 16. Over the subsequent weeks, the list dwindled down to the last b-boys standing, Jay-Z and Eminem. Eminem won by a landslide of 69 percent, compared to Jay-Z's 31 percent.
Soulja Boy was in this contest. LOL.

When Eminem didn't sell out I considered him to be one of the best out there. Songs like "The Real Slim Shady, Shake that A$$" and some others were horrible. But if you listen to ones like Sing for the Moment, Lose Yourself, Stan, White America, Hallie's Song, Til' I Collapse, Like Toy Soldiers, Rabbit Run, Mosh, Superman, When I'm Gone, etc...Those are the songs that made me one of his biggest fans.
He's coming out with King Mathers and I hope he goes back to his roots rather than selling to the "pop crowd."

There's a big difference between rap and hip-hop, and needless to say the two audiences are going to have very different opinions of who the greatest are.
As far as commerical pop rap goes, I'll definately give Eminem his due, but he's only moderately talented in terms of rhyming if you compare him to people like Pharoe Monch, Cannibus, and Rakim.

Anyone who makes any money on their art, whether it's paintings, films, music or whatever, are commercial. Underground rappers are just as eager to make money of their craft as any one else. I don't necessarily feel that's a bad thing but to assume that just because someone never makes it big doesn't mean they wouldn't sell their product.
As for "expanding" my taste, that's hardly the issue.

Of course all rappers are commercial. Like you said, nearly everyone who does anything to make money is commercial. What I think sweetness meant by "commercial" is selling out/more mainstream. I, like many here can't commercialized rap now because it's all terrible. The less commercial/mainstream rap is the best by far. It's when people sell out that they start to suck. This is the case with Em and Weezy.
Personally, I don't really like much of what Lil Wayne releases via album, but his mixtapes and internet **** are legit.
Nas FTW

I don't like the term "selling out" but if he means mainstream that's understandable. I realize that most, if not all, mainstream music (especially rap/hip-hop) is totally geared towards the 12-25 white middle to upper class, so yeah of course it's crap because they will buy anything.

I think what people mean are "pop" rappers (aka the Soulja Boy, Flo Rida, Lil' John, etc). More "dance" hip hop than actual rap.
Btw, it's Eminem, not M&M. I've heard Talib, Rakhim, Immortal Tecnique, Kanye, Nas, Jay-Z, Common, Jedi Mind Tricks, etc...When Eminem was actually rapping, and not putting out that Skake that A$$ ********, he was right there with them. Of the current "mainstream" guys that get a lot of pub I'd rank them Jeezy-T.I./Kanye/Weezy.
I'm a big fan of Jeezy as well. His raps are definitely more focused on the streets, the struggle, drugs, etc...Not the best at word play but he can still lay it down.

Yeah. I like a lot of his songs. I have a funny story about Eminem though.
My parents bought my an MP3 player when I was around 12 or 13. Most of the songs I had were Eminem songs. My parents want to hear the new MP3 player and so they pick it up and press play. The first random song that comes on is Superman-Eminem. My parents and I had a talk after that and they told me not to listen to Eminem anymore.

If you ever mock any member of NWA again( except Cube. what the hell happened?), so help me...
my style as a juvenile Ran with a gang, slanged in the meanwhile.
While he might have been very influential and brought a lot of "attitude" to the group, he sucked as an MC

I'm waiting for Kanye to really live up to the hype he garnared. His first three CD's have been very good IMO, but nothing that blew me out of the water. He's a very good producer, but I know he can take it to the next level, it's just if he chooses to.
If College Dropout didn't blow you away, nothing Kanye can ever do will impress you.
My favorite rapper ever is Esham. It's been a while since I listened to him, but just after reading this thread, I've been listening to him for the past few days. He's released a ton of CD's and made his first CD, Boomin' Words from Hell, when he was 13. Does his own production and everything.. He was pretty insane back in the early-mid 90's, and then in 1999 he made my favorite CD ever with his group Natas, called WWW.com (http://WWW.com). Don't really care for his newer stuff though. Pretty much all of his songs have been uploaded onto YouTube.. Not that any of you will care, but I'll link to a few.
"Some Ol' Wicket ****" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOnZinIc81c
10 years before Eminem had 8 mile, Esham had "Crewzin Down 7 Mile" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n20bGqUvoZ0
"Judgement Day" with a nice Black Sabbath sample - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqrlX_JoKOo
Probably his most controversial song "KKKill the Fetus" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqbaivMb1DM
Classic Esham "24/7" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HykpDylJkTc
It's hard not putting every single song here.. but I'll end it now. I'll have to introduce some Natas later on.

It's a matter of preference but nobody has ever made me FEEL what they're saying like 2Pac.

Pac doesn't have the word plays of Weezy or the flow of Biggie, but his raw emotion and the content of his music (as well as his life) are what make him my favourite.

Oh Jesus, not this rapper again.
Greatest Alive = Nas/Jay-Z (too tough to call)
Greatest Ever = I haven't heard enought 2Pac to say, so I would have to go with Biggie Smalls.
Also, to mqtirishfan, College Dropout was a great album, borderline amazing, but not one of the best albums ever made. Amazing beats, but just doesn't have the strength of Notorious's Ready to Die or Wu Tang's Enter the 36 Chambers

If I had to ranked my top rappers of all time it would go
2Pac
The Game
Ice Cube
E-40
Mac Dre
Lil Wayne
Too Short
Eazy E
Snoop Dog
Eminem
Biggie
Mostly like the old and new west cost rappers.
This list lost all legitimacy when you put E-40, Too Short, Lil Wayne and Eazy E all ahead of Dr. Dre.

The game has changed. The bare bones beats have faded (apart from some underground stuff). Personally I like the new beats as long as there is a lot of lyrical content in there.
And that beat is ridiculous, as are his lyrics. The voice caught me off guard but it's not as bad as I thought it would be after reading the posts.

Well, according to the site that I found it on, blender, it supposedly was, but that was extremely short to be a single coming off the new album. I'm excited though, no more trying to create a hit single like Just Lose it or Without Me, that are ok but not real rap. Hopefully, the new album is more like this track

I'm actually a little pissed off, because a second Em verse would have been a lot better. Hell, just about anything would have. His flow was simply lazy.

For once, I'm letting myself get a little optimistic about it being this quarter, mostly because of a track recently put out with R. Kelly, 50 Cent and presumably a guide for Dre or BL.

I'm so pump for Detox but I know I can't get my hopes up.
Also, Rakim is the best rapper alive. The fact that he wasn't on the list is embarrassing. Rakim is arguably the greatest MC of all-time. Although he was in his prime in the late 80's early 90's, he still alive thus making him the "Best Rapper Alive".
