Farm crop: Rangers' top 20 prospects

1. DEREK HOLLAND, LHP, Double-A Frisco

If Holland had been the 25th pick in the draft in 2006, his 2008 season would have been jaw-dropping. The fact that he was taken in the 25th round in 2006 makes his 2008 season (14-2, 2.05 in 29 starts, including the Texas League playoffs, with 175 strikeouts in 171.1 innings, a .201 opponents' batting average, and four home runs allowed) all that more amazing a story. The Rangers' Nolan Ryan Minor League Pitcher of the Year will almost certainly get a non-roster invite to major league camp in February.

2. NEFTALI FELIZ, RHP, Double-A Frisco

Feliz was a 19-year-old with all of 56.1 stateside, short-season innings when Texas insisted that he be included in last summer's Mark Teixeira trade with the Braves, who had signed him for a relatively modest $100,000 out of the Dominican Republic. Credit great Rangers scouting, from A.J. Preller to Don Welke to Keith Boeck, who collectively had a solid book on the flamethrower before the Rangers even began trade talks with the Braves.

3. JUSTIN SMOAK, 1B, Low A Clinton

One of baseball's best offenses may have another Mark Teixeira on the way. Smoak, who had a big Fall Instructional League showing and is now facing near-ready pitching prospects in the Arizona Fall League, could come fast.

4. MICHAEL MAIN, RHP, Low A Clinton

Tim Hudson logged 268 innings over 49 minor league appearances (24-10, 3.22) before reaching the big leagues. Be my guest if you want to bet on Main needing another 185 minor league innings before he gets to Arlington. If stuff and makeup were the only measure, he might be ready now.

5. ELVIS ANDRUS, SS, Double-A Frisco

Andrus is a difference-maker defensively, a natural leader, and at age 19 he wasn't overmatched at the plate in Class AA, hitting .311 over the final three months of the season after returning from a broken finger.

6. TAYLOR TEAGARDEN, C, Texas

Teagarden is a difference-maker defensively, a natural leader, and in his first run through the American League, he wasn't overmatched at the plate, hitting .319/.396/.809 in 47 at-bats. He reenters the list even though he finished the season in Arlington, because he didn't exhaust his rookie status.

7. MARTIN PEREZ, LHP, Short-Season A Spokane

You've heard all about his eye-opening stuff, his command of three plus pitches. The added good news is that he's a confident but mature 17-year-old who isn't going to let the Johan Santana comps go to his head. There are organizations in which he'd be the number one pitching prospect.

8. MAX RAMIREZ, C, Triple-A Oklahoma

Outshined by the splashier big league debuts of his Frisco teammates Chris Davis and Teagarden, Ramirez had one of the best offensive seasons (.350/.444/.636) of anyone in minor league baseball in 2008. He will be an impact bat in the major leagues.

9. ENGEL BELTRE, CF, Low A Clinton

Beltre is a potentially unique talent who plays center field like a young Junior Griffey and is capable of doing anything offensively. His Clinton numbers (.283/.308/.403) may not jump off the page, but as the Midwest League's youngest position player the 18-year-old racked up 43 extra-base hits and stole 31 bases in 130 games.

10. BLAKE BEAVAN, RHP, Low A Clinton

If you're concerned that Beavan's velocity dipped a bit in 2008 from his high school days, consider that the 19-year-old went 10-6, 2.37 in his first pro season, pounding the strike zone against older competition. Imagine what he's going to do when the velocity comes back.

11. JULIO BORBON, CF, Double-A Frisco

Even though he commanded a major league deal as a supplemental first-round pick in 2007, Borbon probably exceeded expectations in 2008, hitting .322/.363/.427 between High A Bakersfield and AA Frisco. A big league debut in 2009 is possible.

12. NEIL RAMIREZ, RHP, Short-Season A Spokane

A broken hand cost Ramirez some needed innings in Fall Instructional League, but he'll be good to go in the spring. His fastball movement and power curve give him a chance to break out in a big way in 2009.

13. WILFREDO BOSCAN, RHP, Short-Season A Spokane

Boscan is not as high-profile as the pitchers beneath him on this list, and some who are not on the list at all, but he's extremely polished for an 18-year-old. A plus curve and a plus change complement a solid fastball, and he commands it all.

14. ERIC HURLEY, RHP, Texas

Rangers Ballpark may not be Hurley's ideal venue, but he's tough mentally and stands to be a perennial double-digit winner who chews up innings. That's a valuable commodity.

15. KASEY KIKER, LHP, High A Bakersfield

Opinions differ on what role Kiker is ultimately best suited for, but nobody doubts that he's a winner. His 5-5, 4.73 mark in Bakersfield wasn't great, but the California League can disguise solid pitching progress. He'll fare better in Frisco.

16. WILMER FONT, RHP, Rookie-Level Arizona League

Font's lost 2008 season (4.1 innings) means the 18-year-old's 2009 workload will be limited as well. There may not be a righthander in the system with a better assortment of stuff. Think about that.

17. OMAR POVEDA, RHP, High A Bakersfield

Holding his own at age 20 in the California League, the 6'4", 200-lb. righthander introduced an improved breaking ball and struck out 97 hitters in 90.2 innings. Poveda may be the Rangers' toughest 40-man roster decision next month.

18. JOSE VALLEJO, 2B, Double-A Frisco

The Rangers' Minor League Defender of the Year could find himself on the German Duran path in 2009, transitioning from full-time second baseman to a guy who plays all over the infield in AAA. Vallejo could surface in Texas next season, bringing game-changing speed.

19. TOMMY HUNTER, RHP, Triple-A Oklahoma

Hunter was rushed in 2008 but has the makeup to use the big league adversity he experienced to his advantage. Projects to be an innings-eater at the back end of a big league rotation.

20. ROBBIE ROSS, LHP, Unassigned

We probably won't see Ross make his pro debut until the short-season leagues kick off in June, but anticipation is high. He's another key figure in an increasingly deep stable of lefthanders in the Rangers' system.

Article (http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081030&content_id=3655628&vkey=news_sf&fext=.jsp&c_id=sf)about Giants possibly trading Matt Cain:

The discussion over whether the Giants should trade Matt Cain already is a lively one, conducted on radio talk shows and Internet fan sites and by baseball reporters nationwide.

The issue is likely to intensify as the offseason progresses and trade rumors proliferate, beginning with next week, when Major League general managers convene for their annual meetings in Dana Point, Calif. Giants GM Brian Sabean doubtlessly will hear Cain's name whispered in his ear by covetous counterparts.

Ideally, the Giants would keep Cain to maintain their formidable tandem of 24-year-old right-handers at the top of the starting rotation. Asked during his end-of-season summary whether Cain and National League Cy Young Award candidate Tim Lincecum will be off-limits in trade talks, Sabean said, "In my mind, they are."

But Sabean expressed similar resolve last year, before he weighed trading Lincecum for Toronto outfielder Alex Rios. The Giants needed a big bat then, and they still need one now. With Lincecum having entrenched himself among baseball's top performers, speculation has shifted to Cain, who almost surely could be exchanged for a potent hitter still in his 20s.

Since GMs loathe divulging their innermost thoughts, MLB.com asked four Major League scouts about the merits of trading Cain, which until recently would have been unthinkable. Speaking under condition of anonymity, they agreed Cain's better being retained than peddled -- yet they wouldn't hesitate to trade him in the right deal.

"I certainly wouldn't want to move him unless I absolutely had to," a scout for a National League team said of Cain, whose 30-43 career record belies his 3.74 ERA. "I think he's going to get better. With continued maturity, he's going to be a dominant guy."

With his 6-foot-3, 246-pound physique, steamy fastball and stoic attitude, Cain has "big-time upside," a scout for an American League club said. "He's at the top of the list. I think he's going to be an impact pitcher."

But the consensus of scouts said Cain doesn't quite qualify for the tiny group of truly untouchable players.

"The only guys I'd say would be untouchable with anybody would be the Albert Pujolses or the Joe Mauers of the world," a scout representing an AL team said. "There aren't too many guys in our game about who you'd say, 'I can't trade him.' I think it's very closed-minded if you would say he's untouchable."

One scout pondered Oakland's eight-player deal last December with Arizona that fetched the A's six players, mostly Minor League prospects, for right-hander Dan Haren.

"That's a great analogy right there -- that's what you've got to do," the scout said. "Is Matt Cain any better than Dan Haren? I don't know. But they traded [Haren]."

One rumor already has circulated widely: Cain for Milwaukee first baseman Prince Fielder, who has hit 112 home runs in the last three seasons. The Brewers could lose both CC Sabathia and Ben Sheets to free agency and would desperately need a starter.

"Wow," one of the NL scouts said. "That would be tempting. But, to me, Fielder is a below-average defensive player. I care more about defense than most people."

Money would be a factor in this trade. Fielder's eligible for salary arbitration and could command as much as $10 million. Signing him to a multiyear deal wouldn't be cheap, either. By contrast, Cain's contract -- an economical one, which enhances his value -- will pay him $2.65 million in 2009 and $4.25 million in 2010. There's also a $6.25 million club option for 2011, although the base figure could rise nominally if Cain reaches certain performance levels.

Thus, the Brewers probably would have to send the Giants a player or two with Fielder to get Cain. One scout said: "If there's imbalance with the dollars, the other club would probably sweeten the pot a little bit."

A scout suggested that if the Giants dangled Cain for a hitter besides Fielder, they probably could obtain two prospects along with the hitter they needed. He added that one of the prospects ought to be a pitcher who is almost Major League-ready to help cushion the loss of Cain.

But, another scout said: "The problem with our game is there aren't a lot of organizations with a lot of bona fide prospects in their systems."

Yet, some do possess that depth, and chances are that they're among the two dozen clubs involved in the perennial search for starting pitching. Sabean and his assistants can expect to handle plenty of questions about Cain in the weeks ahead.

Sheffield can still produce at the plate and that has been San Diego's achilles heel. 31 is not old in MLB... FYI. Rodney has closing experience... something SD also lacks with Hoffman in FA. At worst, he's a good set up guy. ...and what list are you looking at that says Lambert, Ramirez and Clevlen aren't amongst the Tigers top 20 prospects?

This is what I found. ...and it's fairly new and talks about the Tigers '09 prospects.

Ok sent in my main requests. Should I send another email with lesser player requests, with stipulations only to sign if I don't land my main guys?

I'm not gonna lie, I don't know all too much about the Malins system, but they've got guys such as Winters, Tucker, De La Cruz and West. I'm making a playoff push baby!

me too, but I knew it wasn't going to happen. Got Sheets though. that's the Ace we need til Huddy comes back. Sheets, Hampton, Jurrjens and Campillo should be able to hold down the fort for now.

I should have went after Sergio Mitre. Two years and 3 million from the Indians? Yankees basically got him on a minor league deal the other day.

Are we going to get more signings tonight or will that come tomorrow.

Also CC for 6 years 144 million is a steal when you guys see the money he is really going to get.

24 Million for a pitcher who has pitched a ridiculous amount of innings. What a steal

scar988

well, it's for basically nothing each year, if he comes back to form, it's a steal. if he doesn't he's cut.

So the Braves have the most injury prone Starting Pitching ever. Giving Sheets that long of a contract is insane, I did not offer more than a 2 year contract

idk, I just have a feelign about hte 5 of them. I think when healthy it could be a dominant rotation. Mazzone would be welcomed back in a heartbeat too.

Jonathan Sanchez and Matt Cain are available. Of course, I expect the teams that missed on CC Sabathia to hit me up soon.
