So I'm a Steelers Fan, and I was thinking the other day how good we would be if we had not lost some key players to Free Agency in the past years. So I thought it would be a good topic to see what some team's rosters would look like if free agency wasn't a factor in modern football.

Steelers:

QB - Ben Roethlisberger
RB - Willie Parker, Rashard Mendenhall
WR - Hines Ward, Plaxico Burress, Antwaan Randle El, Santonio Holmes(obviously wouldn't have been drafted if ARE and plax stayed though)
OL - This would still be the team's weakness. Marvel Smith, Faneca, ???, Kendall Simmons, Willie Colon.
DL - Aaron Smith, Casey Hampton, Brett Kiesel
LB - Woodley, Harrison, Foote, Porter, Mike Vrabel(kinda doesn't count though since we cut him for non financial reasons), Lawrence Timmons. No clue who the starters would be here.
CB - Ike Taylor, Bryant McFadden
S - Chris Hope, Troy Polamalu

How much talent does this team have? Any other teams with a crazy good amount of talent

This is kind of complicated because losing FA affects who your team drafts so.... Definitely some confusion.

That is interesting and all, but don't forget that it doesn't factor in a salary cap either.

Aye. And I think Unrestricted Free Agency is achievable without the cap, it just takes 6 years instead of 4 to get to.

Yeah, we'll never finish thinking this stuff up cause it's all one big catch-22

I still don't get how thats going to work?

If your locked into a contract for 7 years does that mean in the 6th year you can become a FA?

I only thought this rule was for drafted players that got 4 year deals. Where it would decided if they are RFA or UFA

I know it might be unrealistic, but just for fun the Pats would look something like this-

QB-Tom Brady, Matt Cassell, Kevin O'Connell
RB-Laurence Maroney, Kevin Faulk, BenJarvus Green-Ellis
WR-Deion Branch, David Givens, Chad Jackson (?), Troy Brown
TE-Ben Watson, Dan Graham
OL-Matt Light, Logan Mankins, Dan Koppen, Damien Woody, Steve Neal, Nick Kaczur, Billy Yates, Ryan O'Callaghan

DE-Richard Seymour, Ty Warren, Jarvis Green
NT-Vince Wilfork, Mike Wright
OLB-Willie McGinnest, Shawn Crable, Pierre Woods, Gary Guyton
ILB-Jerod Mayo, Tedy Bruschi
CB-Asante Samuel, Ty Law, Randall ***, Terrance Wheatley
FS-Eugene Wilson, James Sanders
SS-Brandon Meriweather, Lawyer Milloy

We would really need some help at WR, this team compares pretty favorably to the 2006 squad. We would need some more young talent at LB and WR but other than that we look pretty good.
