The fact that Rob Gronkowski didn't make the Mackie Award list is amazing. Someone really dropped the ball.

Probably Spike's and Coffman for those. It's kinda amazing how Maualuga got there on reputation alone.

Coffman might fall into the same pitfall that Martin Rucker and Garrett Mills did.

Coffman is clearly the best TE this season but I bet Jermaine Gresham gets the award, he's getting a lot of love this year.
Wow, no love for Alphonso Smith? He'd be my pick.

Jermaine Gresham wouldn't be a bad pick either. I still think Coffman deserves it more than anybody else...although he hasn't caught a pass in a few weeks. Being injured down the stretch kinda hurts him a bit.

If he stays all four years, they're going to rename the Thorpe Award the Eric Berry Covers Everything Award.
SuperKevin
11-20-2008, 06:48 PM
It's a shame someone with cover skills like Berry plays safety but it's really the only way to prevent teams from taking him out of the game. If he was still at CB nobody would ever throw on his side of the ball. Letting him play in the middle keeps teams from really avoiding him
ElectricEye
11-20-2008, 06:59 PM
The real question is where he ends up playing in the pros. It'll be an interesting question when the time comes. He's very obviously capable of playing corner still.
I think he'll win the Thorpe award
Boy, the Thorpe Award is definitely going to be worth it this year, with Jenkins, Smith, and Berry among potential winners.

Mauluga isn't really that much of a surprise. In my opinion USC has the best defense in the nation (Bama is really the only other team that can compete for that distinction) and somebody was going to get attention for that. No surprise that most of the attention goes to the guy with the most preseason accolades. To be fair while Mauluga's play is not deserving of the award he has been battling the injury bug most of the year and in the last three games has played very well.
I'm shocked that James Casey is not on that list for the Mackey. A tight end with 85 catches, 1007 yards and 9 TDs through ten games should at least be a semifinalist.

Rey and Spikes? That's the best LBs they could come up with?
Brit Miller: 124 tackles (67 solo), 15.5 TFL, 6 sacks, 3 FF, 1 FR, 1 INT, 7 PBU
Brandon Spikes: 70 tackles (37 solo), 8 TFL, 2 sacks, 3 INT, 1 PBU

My boy Fenroy's got the second highest YPC and rushing TDs among all the semi-finalists. Will he be selected one of the three finalists? Highly doubtful. The majority probably still doesn't even know who Tyrell is, and he's the best senior RB in the nation. Seriously.

What am I missing?Tackles are a poor representation of a player value's a good amount of the times. Illinois defense is on the field a lot more than Florida's defense. Also since Florida blows out every one Spikes loses playing time to the second team defense. I would have chosen Orapoko as the winner but he has slowed down. I have yet to see Hughes this year. I would then give the award to Spikes. But the Mauluaga and Laurinatis hating has to stop. Mauluaga has been playing injured some games and he is the best block shedding LB in this draft class. Also Laurinatis is great running through traffic and is great coverage. I can't wait till next year when Spikes gets the same treatment.

not with the game he had tonight
Brown needs like 250 yards (assuming Greene gets around 100) to be the rushing champion and is doing it on a much less talented team than either Ringer or Greene

Let's keep in mind that these selection commitees have their own biases. They prefer players from certain conferences and teams, they buy into the media hype and they prefer seniors and juniors. If that wasn't the case then these sophomores would've gotten more notice.
Oklahoma, Travis Lewis: 117 tackles, 10.5 TFL, 3 sacks, 4 ints
PSU, Navarro Bowman: 98 tackles, 11.5 TFL, 3 sacks, 1 int, 6 PBU for a defense allowing 12.4 points per game.
Alabama, Rolando McClain: 77 tackles, 10 TFL, 3 sacks, 1 int, 6 PBU for a defense allowing a paltry 2.8 yards per carry and 75 yards rushing per game.

Egregious lies. Not even close.
Rashad Johnson (minus the SEC championship game) - 5 INTs, 73 tackles, 11 passes defended, 2 TDs
Eric Berry - 7 INTs, 72 tackles, 6 passes defended, 2 TDs
Honestly, Berry didn't have a much better season than Johnson beyond the stats. Berry is just a really flashy player and that is why he gets all of his hype. I admit that he is good, but he wasn't even a top-10 defensive player in the country. I think that your Berry hype stems a lot more from watching his recruitment and being able to return INTs for TDs than it does for him being a safety. Malcolm Jenkins simply shut down any WR he came across, so he deserves that award 100000000x more than Berry.

Or it could come from the fact that teams are afraid of Eric Berry. He's an amazing safety. He's got unreal range, can hit as well as any DB in the country, and is so good teams just outright don't bother throwing anywhere in his zip code.
That being said, Malcolm Jenkins isn't a terrible choice by any stretch of the imagination. I just feel that Berry is the best defensive player in the country. Jenkins is a phenomenal corner though.

i can't even believe you would say such a thing. Berry is the best DB in the country. Quick, name the best WR that Jenkins faced this season

Arrelius Benn who Malcolm Jenkins man-handled. It is much easier for every here to say Berry because it is 10x easier to look flashy in college when you are a safety. The entire point of a CB is to make himself and the WR he is covering invisible. All Berry has to do is make some big hits and return some INTs for TDs and he begins to get lauded as the next Sean Taylor. Berry is great, but not the best DB in the country.

3 catches for 65 yards when Juice Williams is throwing to you isn't bad.

Look at every other game Benn played and you will notice how much he was shut down. Then again, without actually watching the game tape, it is impossible to know if it was Jenkins who gave up those 3 catches to Benn.

Fair enough. Though I maintain Berry's the best defensive player in the country, I would likely take Jenkins as my second. Considering my OSU hatred, that's lofty praise from me.

Jenkins is a great player, but Berry deserved it more than he did.
Berry had better individual statistics, and was a part of a better defense than Jenkins. The Vols DEF ranked 4th in the nation in total defense, and ranked 4th nationally in pass defense. Ohio St. ranked 9th in total defense and 6th in pass defense. Still great, but not as good as Tennessee's.
Berry was also voted SEC Defensive Player of the Year in a conference that had 5 DEF's ranked in the Top 25 in the nation. His 7 INT's are tied for the lead the nation, and his 265 INT return yards ranked first among the nation - the closest player to him is Ahmad Black with 191 return yards. Berry became the SEC's career leader in INT return yards, breaking the previous record that stood for 60-years (He is 14 yards shy of the NCAA record held by Terrell Buckley). His 2 INT's for TD's tie him for first in the nation also. Not to mention all of the all-american teams he's made.
Jenkins is an outstanding player, but he was not better than Berry this year. Few players were.
I think Gresham got robbed. Gresham had 40 less yards and 2 more touchdowns with 25 less receptions than Coffman.

He also played two more games...
Also having 25 less receptions isn't necessarily a good thing.

No he didn't. Coffman was the right choice. He was absolutely sick this season. He had about 30 plays that made you say "wow"

Laurinaitis got the Lott Trophy. Guess they felt they should give him something, they have so many freakin' awards for the same thing.
