Hey everyone,

I was going through my closet and found an old game I used to play that was all about sports rules. I thought it would be fun to make a little trivia game out of this for the forum. The winner will get a Custom User Title of their choice (or they may defer that choice to anyone they want!)

Here are the rules:

1. The game was created in 1995, so all answers apply to rules at this time. They are all fairly obscure, so I would GUESS none have been changed, but the answer on the game is the correct answer here. If one is def. BS with proof, I will just throw out the question.

2. Answers may be located in this thread OR PMed to me. If you do both, ONLY the PM counts.

3. I'll attempt to answer any question about the questions in this thread. Reply with questions, do not PM them to me.

4. You have a week! I'll check it all out next Thursday night!

5. Have fun!

Here we go:

College Football

1. On 4th and 10 from the 5 yard line, John's untouched punt, from his end zone, goes out of bounds at the opposing team's 42 yard line. John's teammate, who is the up-back in the punt formation, and who is standing in the end zone, is called for clipping during the punt. What is the ruling?

2. John's team attempts an extra point. A defensive player, who is standing in the end zone and in front of the goal post, jumps up and blocks the attempt above the crossbar and knocks the ball into the field of play. What is the ruling? [JBond note: I want the EXACT call on the field]

3. A kickoff from the Blue Team goes out of bounds at the 20 yard line, untouched by the Red Team. Name all three options the Red Team has.[JBond note: Despite some kickoff rules changing, this one appears untouched. Be as specific as possible with answers.]

4. John's team, on 4th and 10 at the 40 yard line, attempts a field goal. A defensive player, who is standing in the end zone and in front of the goal post, jumps up and blocks the field goal attempt above the crossbar and into the field of play. What are the two options for John's team? [JBond note: Yes, this is different than #2]

5. True or False: A team may call two consecutive time-outs between downs to ice the kicker before he attempts a field goal.

6. After the ball has been marked ready for play, but before the center touches the ball, the tight end steps into the neutral zone, and then retreats, getting no reaction from the defense. Is a penalty called for this?

7. Can a runningback wear #72?

8. During a play, a team is discovered to have two players on the field with identical numbers. Is there a penalty for this? If so, what?

9. John is the snapper of his team's successful field goal attempt. John's snap was from the opposing team's 29 yard line. A defensive player is called for unsportsmanlike conduct at the 19 yard line during the kick. Does John's team have the option of taking the play or the penalty? [JBond note: Yes or No answer]

10. A pass is thrown down the field and hits a referee on the shoulder and bounces high into the air. The cornerback shoves the WR in an attempt to knock the ball down. Is this considered pass interference?

Pro Football

1. A team calls time out with eight minutes left to go in the first quarter. How long does the timeout last?

2. On a 1st and 10 from the 1 yard line, the running back is tackled with half the ball in the end zone and half the ball in the field of play. Where is the ball spotted?

3. It is 4th and 8 on the 20 yard line. During a successful field goal attempt by the Red Team, John (on the Blue Team,) is hoisted into the air in an attempt to block the field goal. What is the ruling, since the field goal was successful. What are the options for the Red Team? [JBond note: Two options here folks!]

4. Bob intercepts a pass in the end zone. He tried t run it out and fumbles the ball in the end zone, with the ball rolling out of bounds at the 4 yard line. Where should the ball be spotted?

5. On the last play of the 3rd quarter, the punt returner signals for a fair catch as time expires. His team has three options. What are they? [JBond note: Two options are the same, but happen on different yard lines]

6. John takes a handoff from the quarterback, who is under center. He starts to run a sweep to the right, but throws a pass behind the line to the quarterback, who is open in the flats. Is this legal?

7. John catches a kickoff and sprints up the sideline. He is inbounds, but bumps the Line Judge who is standing out-of-bounds at the 15. Is the ball blown dead there, or does the play continue?

8. John signals for a fair catch and then muffs the ball into the air. A defender covering the punt, picks off the muff in the air at the 25 yard line and runs it in for a touchdown. John could have caught the muffed ball, if the defender had allowed him to. What is the correct ruling?

9. John intercepts a forward pass on the 7 yard line. His momentum carries him into the end zone, where he is tackled. He fumbles and a player from the opposing team falls on the ball. What is the ruling?

10. May both team's benches be located on the same side of the field?

JBond, #9 is pretty much impossible. In college football, unsportsmanlike conduct penalties are dead ball fouls. You said it occurs during the play. This would be called a personal foul on the field.

You may be onto something. Take a look at the actual question I am asking, and if an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was called, what would the answer be?

I have a question regarding #9 of pro football.
when he fumbles the ball in the endzone, is it caused by the ground or the tackler?

The tackle results in a fumble, so the ground does not cause it (essentially the tackler)

OK, just for the record, some of these I have no clue on. I'm actually going off of knowledge and experience here, no looking anything up, I promise.

College Football

1. Unsportsmanlike Conduct - ball advances 15 yards to the kicking teams 43 yard line.

2. Live ball foul. Ball is advanced half the distance to the endzone and re kicked.

3. 1. take the ball on the 40
2. team Blue is penalized 5 yards and kicks over.
3. team red takes the ball on the 20 (penalty declined).

4. Live ball foul. Ball is advanced 5 yards. team can re-kick or run 4th and 5 play.

5. True

6. No (getting no reaction from the defense - 5 yard penalty "false start" on the offense if they do react )

7. Yes, he must however a make this known to the head referee.

8. Illegal substitution. 5 yard penalty, replay the down.

9. Yes

10. No

Pro Football

1. 30 seconds

2. Touchdown, the ball broke the plane.

3. Rekick or accept the penalty - 5 yards from the the point the ball is returned.

4. Touchback, ball spotted on the 20.

5. Catch the ball-ball is down where it is caught.
Don't catch it - down the ball where it stops
Catch it and take 3 or more steps - 5 yard penalty from where the ball was first caught

6. Yes, as long as the RB has not advanced the ball forward.

7. Play continues

8. Touchdown, once a receiving team's player touches the ball he is eligible to be blocked.

9. John's team gets the ball at the 7 yard line.

10. There is no rule against it (but i wouldn't recommend it LOL)

College Football

1. Safety
2. Safety (one point for John’s team)
3. Take possession where OOB, 5 yard penalty + rekick, put ball at own 35 yard line [I gave a lot of people this one despite not having the 35 yard line. 40 yard line is pros]
4. Take result of the play or a safety
5. True
6. No
7. Yes, but he is not an eligible receiver
8. Yes, of 5 yards
9. No, they must take the kick, and the penalty occurs on the kickoff since the kick was already in the air.
10. Yes

Pro

1. 1 minute and 50 seconds
2. It is a safety. All the ball must break the plane of the goal line for it not to be a safety.
3. It is a 15 yard penalty. The penalty is half the distance to the goal, or the Red Team can take the three points and assess the penalty on the kick off.
4. This is a touchback. Bob’s team gets the ball 1st and 10 at the 20.
5. 1 – They may elect a fair catch kick. 2 – they may change ends of the field to begin the fourth quarter. 3 – or they may take a play from scrimmage before the end of the quarter.
6. No, when the qB is under center, he is an ineligible WR. The ball is dead when the catch is made, loss of down at the previous spot.
7. The ball is blown dead at the 15 yard line.
8. Fair Catch interference us called on the defender. The defender has to allow the player who has signaled the fair catch an opportunity to catch a muff that is still airborne.
9. It is John’s teams ball, 1st and 10, on the 7 yard line.
10. Yes. The home team has the option of allowing both teams on the same side.

"RULE 7-3 / SNAPPING AND PASING THE BALL FR -105

Contact Interference

ARTICLE 9.
a. Either Team A or Team B legally may interfere with opponents
behind the neutral zone.

b. Players of either team legally may interfere beyond the neutral zone after the pass has been touched (A.R. 7-3-9-II).

c. Defensive players legally may contact opponents who have crossed the
neutral zone if the opponents are not in a position to receive a catchable
forward pass.

1. Those infractions that occur during a down in which a forward pass
crosses the neutral zone are pass interference infractions only if the
receiver had the opportunity to receive a catchable forward pass.

2. Those infractions that occur during a down in which a forward pass does
not cross the neutral zone are Rule 9-3-4 infractions and are penalized
from the previous spot.

d. Pass interference rules apply only during a down in which a legal forward
pass crosses the neutral zone (Rules 2-19-3 and 7-3-8-a and c) (A.R. 10-2-
2-XXXVII).

e. Contact by Team B with an eligible receiver involving a personal foul that
interferes with the reception of a catchable pass may be penalized either as
pass interference or as a 15-yard personal foul enforced from the previous
spot. Rule 7-3-8 is specific about contact during a pass. However, if the
interference involves an act that ordinarily would result in disqualification,
the fouling player must leave the game.

f. Physical contact is required to establish interference.

g. Each player has territorial rights, and incidental contact is ruled under
“attempt to reach…the pass’’ in Rule 7-3-8. If opponents who are beyond
the line collide while moving toward the pass, a foul by one or both players
is indicated only if intent to impede the opponent is obvious. It is pass
interference only if a catchable forward pass is involved (A.R. 7-3-9-I).

h. Pass interference rules do not apply after the pass has been touched
anywhere inbounds by an inbounds player or has touched an official. If an opponent is fouled, the penalty is for the foul and not pass interference (A.R.
7-3-9-II)."

Did pretty well, though I only just found it so no official entry.

Got 6 and 8 wrong on the college front, thought it was a TO for a uniform infraction as well as yards for number 8.

NFL got 1, 3 and 6 wrong. Had no idea on the timeout, was a pure guess, thought it was a 5 yarder on number 3, got the options right though. No idea on 6, I knew that once a QB went under center you aren't allowed to direct snap to another player, but not that it made them ineligible, is this one different in college rules or did I just completely not know about it?

When is the 2nd round? Try and make an official entry this time.
