Here is a guy I noticed when I was looking up stats and then did some more research. He plays DT and DE for the Spartans. With his frame he would be a very nice fit as a 5-tech in a 3-4. Gilbert has a nice first step and has a very good motor. The thing in watching his tape that really impressed was how well he used his hands. Often big guys can get away with not using their hands well becuase they can overpower their opponents but Jarron Gilbert does a great job of using his hands and has a nice repitoire of pass rush moves. He has nice closing speed. He does lack top end athletism but he is very strong and has a 635 squat. Gilbert has been productive throughout his career with 15TFL's and 9 sacks sn his Sphomore and Junior years. Jarron Gilbert from SDSU is a very intriguing prospect who may be one of the better 3-4 DE prospects in this draft class.

Here's a quality game highlight that include endzone cams used by the coaches and scouts. KHoBtyuof_A&feature=related

Probably a great mid-late round pick to play 3-4 DE

I like Jeff Schweiger the DE formerly of USC on that line as well.

Eh, he seems more like a penetrater than a 3-4 DE. I actually like him as a 4-3 DE. He is big, but with his power, first step, and great hands, he could do a great job there. Mid rounder.

I managed to catch a little SJSU this year and he immediately stood out. I'm not too sure about the talk of him being a 5-tech, he really does play like a 4-3 LE. Not quite sure what to make of where he'll go. He looks really athletic, but I haven't heard any direct quotes of where he has timed, so for the time being I'd say he could probably go as high as the early third round.

I noticed him as well, don't remember against whom but it was in the first half of the season and at that level of competition he just jumps off the screen. He's definitely more of a three tech or left end in a 4-3 for me. He has the frame from a 3-4 end but his play doesn't match the gap control elements.

he looks pretty impressive. he would probably be very good even in SEC or Big 12 play. i would definitely like to see ted thomson fall in love with him and spend a 3-4th rounder on him seeing as we will probably trade down from the 1st and 2nd rounds and have about 8 picks in the 3rd-4th rounds.

not bad. i dont see him as a 4-3 seems to lack explosion and quickness but hes certainly an above average athlete for an interior player. if hes realy that strong looks like qa nice prospect for the 3-4. beats blockers. uses hands well. gets down the line and can chase from behind. i dint see any crazy stuff on the video but hes defintiely on the board based on his measurables and your video id say hes was a 3rd or 4th rd 3-4 de prospect. id like to see what happens though on all the other plays not on the highlight video. does he get owned on all the other plays. i only saw them once i dont remember him much. do they have a bowl game?

Also forgot to mention that that is his Junior highlight video and he had much more productive season as a senior.

SJSU is not in a bowl game. Here are his 2008 Senior highlights though.

Great site for defensive stats.

Heres Gilbert.

Gilbert reminds me a lot of Trevor Pryce. I big DE with not great speed but does everything else well and is able to make plays in the opponents backfield.

I think he'd have an easier transition to the 4-3 as do most DEs with the added ability to move to Defensive Tackle in certain pass situations, but I certainly wouldn't rule out him playing the 3-4 starting out as a predominately 3rd down specialist until he learns to anchor.

He's certainly got the frame to bulk up to 290 or so without losing too much athleticism.

Is there any comparison to Kendall Langford out of Hampton last year that went to Miami this past year

I like this comparison.

He also compares well to Kendall Langford from last years draft. Similar tall, strong, athletic profile, though he looks a bit more explosive from these highlights.

I'd really like to know more about this guy.

Used his hands well against inferior competition. Good burst his junior year. Will be interesting to see how he does in the Senior Bowl, and his performance at the combine should play a role in how his stock does. Intriguing to say the least.

will he get a senior bowl invite?

I think Gilbert is going to be a 3-4 defensive end. The problem is he doesn't even have great speed (5.2?) for a defensive tackle.

Great production but in my mind he's just a late round possibility.

Just thought I'd bring this thread back.

Gilbert stock is shooting up. He had a terrific East West Shrine Week. He is supposed to have a great combine. I wouldn't be surprised to see him as a late 1st round pick. He is an explosive athlete with great size. Gilbert is a great penetrator with ridiculously long arms and is great at getting off blocks. He can play DT in a 4-3 but is ideal as a 3-4 DE (5-tech).

Senior Highlights. Very Impressive.

I'm really hoping the Packers pick him up in the 2nd/3rd round.

I really don't see him falling Past Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Kansas City, Jacksonville, from rds 1-2 for him to fall that far.

I really like him as Canty's replacement in Dallas, but I think with a good combine he goes before the middle of the 2nd.

In general I would agree, but I think Gilbert could be equally effective inside at DT for a system that uses the quicker DTs.

A team like Giants will be keeping a very close eye on him at the combine and wouldn't be surprised if they regarded him higher than many other teams. He seems to me to be a good fit for what they like to do and would be able to work his way into their DT rotation.

Don't be surprised to see Jarron Gilbert go between the #20 and pick 32.

Every team in the NFC East has a buzz on him, and if he blows up the 40,
( 4.8 or better), he's going to be the fastest riser of any prospect in the draft.

Personally I'd like to see him put on 25 more pounds and move him inside to DT in a 4-3 for Washington.

The definition of a sleeper pick.

An aside, how does someone accumulate a -13 rep with ONLY 3 posts?

Lotta love in this forum!

I think everyone wants him to get drafted by their team. But I think that reality will set in he will go late in the 1st. The fact is he didn't play the toughest competition but he could end up being a workout warrior that someone will go after earlier then expected. I think that is jumping the gun on him just a bit though.

I saw him in an interview, he said he's going to bench over 30 reps, and run a sub 4.7
