View Full Version : Build a team of prospects game!

I remember doing something like this last year that was pretty fun and interesting, so I'll try it again this year only turn it into an actual game.

Basically what your going to do is create a starting lineup of 22 players, plus a kicker and punter for a total of 24, using prospects from the upcoming draft.

There are however some limitations. You only get to use the following amounts of players:

1 top 5 pick
1 top 10 pick (not in the top 5)
4 1st rounders
6 2nd/3rd rounders
6 Mid rounders
6 Late rounders/UDFAs

We will use Scott's most recent mock draft for who the top 5, top 10 and 1st round players include. If they are in that area in his mock, that is where you have to use them. (Stafford, Andre Smith, Curry, Wells and Crabtree are the top 5 players for example)

After that, you will use your own discretion and common sense to figure out who counts as 2nd/3rd rounders, mid rounders, etc. If your making outrageous claims like using Herman Johnson as a Late rounder, I'll disqualify you. But for the most part, its up to you. You can include reasonable underclassmen if you wish. Again, use common sense and don't include people very unlikely to declare.

Also, if you want to explain your team (pass happy, spread offense, run first, 34 D, 43 D, whatever) feel free to. It can only help you but you won't be penalized for not doing it.

I'll give people until Friday at 11:59 pm to post your team here. Then, I (and maybe some other forum members who's football knowledge I trust) will pick the top 3 and put them up for a vote shortly thereafter. The first person to 50 votes or the person in the lead by the end of 1 week will win.

As for a prize, I'll plus rep them and encourage anyone else who participated to do the same.

So, as an example, heres my team (it won't be included in the judging.) Please use this format when you post your teams:

QB: John Parker Wilson, Alabama - Late/UDFA
RB: Shonne Green, Iowa - 2nd/3rd
FB: Eric Kettani, Navy - Late/UDFA
WR: Michael Crabtree, Texas Tech - Top 5

Offense: Definitely focuses on the pass. I tried to give Bradford some tall, physical targets to rely on and plenty of blocking behind a line consisting of two first rounders, two second rounders, and a mid rounder, as well as a blocking tight end. Jennings is a great sleeper at running back in my opinion, and he'd be able to run off of that left side all day long.

Defense: Focused mainly on stopping the run with the defensive line. I added a couple of solid pass rushers, and two huge defensive tackles to plug up holes. Spikes is a pretty rangy linebacker and is good against the run, my outside linebackers might struggle a bit, however. I think I make up for the lack of a pass rush with my secondary, where I have two potential lockdown corners and one stellar safety.

I really like this team.

Big, strong offensive line. Speedy, playmaking wide receivers (and TE). Versatile RB that can run inside/outside and catch passes. Smart, accurate QB. Perfect for a quick-strike passing offense modeled somewhat like New England.

Defensive line is athletic and tough with high-motor guys. LBs are all athletic and good tacklers. 2 shutdown man corners that can match up with any athlete. Then I have 2 safeties that fly to the ball whether it's in the air or on the ground and love to hit. Just an overall athletic, intense defense.

Special teams will be outstanding with Harvin, Shipley, Marion, Moore and Davis all capable of returning.

OFFENSE:
We'd be a fairly run-heavy team. However, we would keep defenses off-balance by using Tate deep and pretty much everywhere else on the field, stretching the defense. We'd go with what a defense gives us.

DEFENSE:
Our defense would be based on pressure. Orakpo and Pittman coming of the edges and Raji to collapse the pocket from the inside. We'd ask our ILBs to play sideline to sideline, which I think Curry and Beckwith could do. We'd like to match our corners up on opposing WRs one-on-one. Other than pressure, our safeties would be our most important cog. They would be let to range in zone coverages and even match up man to man from time to time. Our safeties would also be intimidating run supporters and would make receivers think twice about going up for the ball over the middle.

Read the 2nd paragraph of the OP. Hardy, Marks & McCoy are all reasonable IMO. Any prospect that has top-3 round value and hasn't stated he's coming back is reasonable.

Ball control, run first, second, and possibly third offense with Rashad Jennings running behind an enormous offensive line and one of the better run blocking TEs. I don't know if this is to win a game tomorrow or based on potential, so while Chase Daniel may looking really odd, he has a ton of experience behind center and should hopefully avoid making stupid mistakes.

The name of the game is defense. Running the 3-4, I have an athletic, aggressive defense that can hit. The secondary has a ton of size and can support the run as well as allow the defense to blitz at will. It contains the best nose tackle, linebacker, cornerback, and safety in the entire draft.

So I kind of cheated by making Gano do both the punting and kicking, if that doesn't work out just switch Tate for Huber. Basically a run first team with a traditional fullback, dominant inline blocking tight end, and mauling guards. The offensive line seems a little piecemeal but Reed's biggest knock is his age, otherwise he's been fantastic and he played a big part in shutting down Chris Long in TT's bowl game last year. Figure you probably get his rookie contract and one more out of him before he's done but he should be worth it. Urbik has some tackle experience so he's not just a phone booth player and Vasquez can obviously pass block coming from TT. Stafon Johnson will be underdrafted because of the touches he gets.

As for defense, what's more to be said? It is what it is. You have the best nose, most prototypical 3-4 end, one of the most proficient pass rushers in the draft, as a good of an inside duo as you could probably hope for, and dominant man-to-man corner guys.

That was fun. I'll probably do a Tampa 2 as well just for the hell of it.

I'm not so sure about Brandon Tate as a late round pick. I think definitely mid round because I still think he has a possibility to go round 3.

I thought coming of the injury he's definitely be closer to 5, but that's something I also meant to bring up but forgot. I have seen some guys who are borderline third/fourth and I have seen some people choose them as early picks and others do them as middle picks. There probably needs to be some kind of consensus reached for these guys (Tate in mine, I saw the Ramses Bardon was a 2/3 in one whereas I would rate him as a 4/5, etc.).

Yeah no trust me I'm not complaining or anything I just had a thought but for sure in something like this it's impossible to really classify where someone will be chosen, and something like that should definitely be allowed because of the questions regarding his injury.

I didn't think you were complaining, I think you bring up a valid point. I mean, if a guy like Barden, for example, is good for a 2/3, I have to think that makes a receiver that I think is worth a 2/3 (let's say Robiskie, just for example) a 4/5 and really changes the dynamic of how you go about picking your team.

I think anythings fine as long as it's not outrageous. I was going to use Tyson Jackson as a 2nd-3rd because I think he will fall there, but seeing everyone put him as a first rounder I'll keep him off.

Here's my team:
(Kind of modeled after the Ravens and Steelers)
This team is so flippin physical top to bottom on offense and defense

QB: Matt Stafford(Top 5 Pick)
RB: Shonn Green(2nd-3rd)
FB:Brannan Southerland(Late)
WR1: Darrius Heyward-Bey(1st)
WR2:Marko Mitchell(Mid Round)
TE:John Phillips(Late)
LT:Michael Oher(1st)
LG:Cedric Dockery(Mid Round)
C:Edwin Williams(Mid Round)
RG:Herrman Williams(2nd/3rd round)
RT:Phil Loadholt(2nd/3rd)

Offense: This is a very physical offense. A physical line with guys like Oher and Load and a good blocking TE like John Phillips, and a physical run game with Shon Green and Southerland lead blocking. Phillips from TE U, UVA, is a smart guy who blocks really well and is a decent receiving option. A poor man's Todd Heap, well when Heap was a good player. His less talented teammate TE Tom Santi has made an impact this year for the Colts as a rookie. Shon Green is easily the top power back in the draft and has great vision. He's a punishing runner. We do have a the most legitimate QB in the draft in the prototype Stafford and WR's to stretch the field vertically like DHB and Marko Mitchell. Both DHB and Mitchell are 6-3" but are two of the faster WR's in the draft with DHB being arguably the fastest vertically. This team is kind of built for ball control as well as the ability to take advantage of 8 man boxes with a QB and receivers who can burn you over the top. Stafford is our Big Ben and we have a superior physical line. Oher and Load are 2 huge run blocking tackles. Edwin Williams is the biggest center in the draft and a nice run blocker while Herrman is a mamoth RG and Dockery is solid holding down the left side.

Defense:

LDE:Jarron Gilbert(Late)
NT:BJ Raji(1st rounder)
RDE:Clinton McDonald(Late)
LOLB:Clint Sintim(1st Rounder)
LILB: Brandon Spikes(2nd-3rd rounder)
RILB: Darry Beckwith(2nd-3rd rounder)
ROLB:Brian Orakpo(Top 10)
CB1:Macho Harris(2nd-3rd)
CB2:Kevin Barnes(Mid Round)
FS:Courtney Greene(Mid Round)
SS:Michael Hamlin(Mid Round)

Defense: This is obviously a 3-4 defense, and I feel like the personnel fits the scheme so perfectly and this would be a killer defense. This defense is quick and physical from top to bottom. In a 3-4 obviously it's the LB's who wreck most havoc and I believe the LB's are the strength of this defense. Clint Sintim is a guy who plays 3-4 OLB already in college and would continue to thrive in this system in the NFL. I compare him favorably to Adalius Thomas but with better pass rushing skills. Sintim was unblockable this year with over 11 sacks. Sintim is our James Harrison. On the other side we have the freak Orakpo who is our LaMar Woodley or Terrell Suggs. I believe Orakpo has the freakish athletic ability to make the change to OLB and get 10 sacks off the bat. It will be a transition, but at worst he can be a dynamite pass rusher if we move him back to DE. The ILB's may not be flashy prospects like the OLB's but they are tough guys. Spikes has the size and speed to wreck havoc as a 3-4 ILB. He has a freakish build. Darry Beckwith has potential to be a flat out monster if he develops consistency. Our D-line is anchored by the top NT in the draft in BJ Raji. He will clog up the middle freeing up our backers to make tackles. Jarron Gilbert and Clinton McDonald are two more unknown guys but both project to be excellent 3-4 DE's. Gilbert is 6-6" 280 pounds, and had 10 sacks this year. He plays both DT and DE in college making him the perfect fit for our 3-4 defense. On the other side Clinton McDonald is a 6-1" 275 pound guy who plays a lot of DT in college but apparently runs a 4.7. He is very strong and athletic. Our DB's are also a major strength on our defense and most importantly is that it is a very physically imposing group. Macho Harris is one of the most physical corners in the draft. He has the size, can play press coverage, and is an absolute ball hawk. His ball skills are superior. Kevin Barnes is a guy who I think would have been a second round pick had he not been injured. Personally I like him more than Macho. He is very solid in coverage and will hit you like a linebacker. I think we all remember his hit on the Cal receiver which made the receiver throw up on the field. I think Barnes will be a major mid round steal. Our safeties are very solid. Courtney Greene is a guy who was a day one pick before his mediocre senior year, but he is still very talented. Greene has legitimate NFL size but also has good speed and ball skills.Hamlin is a big kid who can hit and read the QB.

K:Sam Swank(Late)
P:Matt Fodge(Late)

Special Teams: Sam Swank has been one of the more accurate kickers the past 4 years in college football. He also has the versatility to double as a punter which he has done throughout his college career. Fodge this years Ray Guy winner might not have the strongest leg, but is a great directional punter which is important for a team like this which depends on field positioning. As far as a kick returner Heyward-Bey would be explosive, and Macho Harris is one of the most exciting punt returners in the college game right now.

I'm a big believer in building with your lines, but also QB is the most important position so I build around Stafford. I think a great pass rush, especially with today's rules is much more important than having great corners, especially if you have a great safety who can make up for mistakes. The O-line would be great, not a whole lot of flash but alot of the great O-Lines don't have top 10 picks spread throughout, they have big physical no name guys and I like big 10 Guards. With a good line James Davis could have a lot of success as he has a ton of talent. I'm a homer but Derek Nicholson is underrated plus if LB's are given room to run most guys can make plays. Receivers aren't flashy but Stafford's arm makes it explosive and Ingram is a great receiving threat. Reddick is a talent if he has his head on, and Miami guys produce.

Edit: Orapko is number 10 in the draft so he doesn't qualify as just a first rounder, just swapped him with Hardy. Plus works better to have a larger DE on the other side.

OFFENSE: SPREAD OFFENCE. The old saying is, "defence when championships" and while i agree with this, if you look back at some of the great teams in recent years, not only did theey have strong defences,
they could score some serious points. ie (Patriots, Rams, Colts, Giants, ect). This is what my team is built around. The offence has a stud QB who can make all the throws, 2 masstive tackles that will prevent
stafford from being killed in the spread offence that will be pass happy. A giant athletic tight end that will work the middle of the feild while being a true red zone threat. Productive wide Receivers who know
how to catch the ball, with a true #1 go to threat in Maclin as a big play threat. A Dangerous running back that in Spiller that defences will have to account for. Overall this offence would score some
serious points.

DEFENSE; COVER 2. The key part for a successful cover 2 defence to excel, is that the front 4 must be able to generate a pass rush
. Orapko and English should be a Dwight Freeny/Mathis cobination, while Jerry will bring a push up the middle and Taylor draws the double team.
The front 4 should wreck havic.

Theres other underclassmen like Hardy for instance who aren't in Scott's mock but who I would still consider first rounders. I'll accept someone like Spikes as a 2nd/3rd rounder because he's not in there, but I think he'll be first round when all is said and done.

I think a factor into who gets the top three spots is how realistic the team is. I've just noticed that people are jumping on underclassmen not in Scott's mock, but generally viewed as first rounders, and pegging them second/third round guys. Hard to make strict rules about unless you assigned values to the players, but it should be thought about when looking through the teams.

Tampa 2 (Indianapolis Model)

QB: Matthew Stafford, Georgia (top 5)
RB: LeSean McCoy, Pittsburgh (early)
FB: Mark Hafner, Houston (late)
WR: Darius Heyward-Bey, Maryland (first)
WR: Brandon Tate, North Carolina (mid)
TE: Travis Beckum, Wisconsin (mid)

When all is said and done, there's no substitute for the top quarterback. Combine that with the second best running back (behind Beanie, ahead of Moreno IMO) who's also proven himself as a pass catcher, two mismatches at fullback/tight end, and the receiver with the highest ceiling, not to mention a guy like Tate who might have been a first rounder if he hadn't gotten injured, and you've got instant offense because...

LT: Eugene Monroe, Virginia (top 10)
LG: Jeff Byers, Southern Cal (late)
C: A.Q. Shipley, Penn State (late)
RG: Trevor Canfield, Cincinnati (mid)
RT: Alex Boone, Ohio State (early)

... you play behind and offense line that does exactly what it needs to do. Boone may or may not be a left tackle in the pros, but he should have more than pass-blocking skills to play right tackle. Combine him with the most prototypical left tackle in the draft and Stafford shouldn't have to worry about ending up on his ass too much. Three mobile, interior linemen top it off, which should keep pass pro tight as well as increasing the effectiveness of plays that ask those guys to pull and screens and the like.

DE: Everette Brown, Florida State (first)
NT: Vince Oghobaase, Duke (early)
UT: Peria Jerry (first)
DE: George Selvie, South Florida (early)

Front four in a Tampa 2 should generate its own pressure, right? Doubling anyone means someone else is probably going to get beat.

OLB: Jonathan Casillas, Wisconsin (mid)
MLB: James Laurinaitis, Ohio State (first)
OLB: Scott McKillop, Pittsburgh (late)

Laurinaitis fills the much recognized role of Tampa 2 MIKE while McKillop is the guy everything gets funneled to.

CB: Joe Burnett, Central Florida (mid)
FS: Derek Pegues, Mississippi State (early)
SS: Michael Hamlin, Clemson (mid)
CB: Victor Harris, Virginia Tech (early)

Pegues is your Bob Sanders and Hamlin can hold down his half or play the box depending on what is asked of him. Burnett and Harris control the outsides.

QB- Sam Bradford, Oklahoma- Top Ten
RB- James Davis, Clemson- Second/Third Round
HB- Travis Beckum- Mid Rounds
WR- Jarrett Dillard, Rice- Late Rounds
WR- Aaron Kelly, Clemson- Late Rounds
ATH- Percy Harvin, Florida- First Round
LT- Andre Smith, Alabama- Top Five
LG- Herman Johnson, Louisiana State- Second/Third Round
C- Antoine Caldwell, Alabama- Mid Rounds
RG- Duke Robinson, Oklahoma- First Round
RT- Phil Loadholt, Oklahoma- Second/Third Round

The offense will feature mostly single back, under center sets. Travis Beckum will man the H-back position, moving around from tight end to full back depending on the formation. Percy Harvin is listed at athlete, and would both line up in the backfield and in the slot, pretty where he'd create the best mismatch, although emphasis is on him being a receiver. The offensive line is beastly, and Sam Bradford will once again be able to stand around for four or five seconds to throw to the touchdown machine that is Jarrett Dillard, the big man in Kelly, and the aforementioned Harvin, or hand it off the to the reliable and underrated James Davis, who has a great combination of speed and power.

DE- Mitch King, Iowa- Late Rounds
UT- Vance Walker, Georgia Tech- Second/Third Round
NT- Ron Brace, Boston College- Mid Rounds
RUSH- Everrette Brown, Florida State- First Round
SAM- Ian Campbell, Kansas State- Late Rounds
MIKE- Rey Maualuga, Southern California- First Round
WILL- Scott McKillop, Pittsburgh- Mid Rounds
CB- Macho Harris, Virginia Tech- Second/Third Round
FS- Derek Pegues, Mississippi State- Mid Rounds
SS- Emanuel Cook, South Carolina- Second/Third Round
CB- Joe Burnett, Central Florida- Mid Rounds

The defense uses blitzing linebackers to create it's pressure outside of Brown. King, Walker, and Brace are powerful lineman who will keep the lanes open for the great pass rusher Campbell, the monster Maualuga, and the quietly dominant McKillop, who moves over to WILL to keep him from being swallowed up in the middle. Emanuel Cook and Macho Harris are both hard hitters, and Derek Pegues brings great range to the safety spot. Burnett is a vastly underrated corner who can hold his own.

K- Graham Gano, Florida State- Late Rounds
P- Aaron Perez, California-Los Angeles- Late Rounds

Not much to explain here. Gano got tabbed 'Late Rounds' simply because kickers never go early (unless Al Davis is running the show).

Offense:

Scheme is predicated on a balanced attack. Spread style offense.

Teams will see a steady dose of Shonn Greene... and Shonn Greene should have plenty of holes to run through with that OL, which is built for anchoring in the pass game and Blowing **** open in the run game.

To Keep teams off balance Devin Moore will be sprinkled in to catch them when they're tired for possibly some big runs. Behind that monster OL he'll pop out and teams would struggle to see see him before they get a full view of the back of his jersey.

Bear Pascoe will be utilized as a full service TE. He will provide excellent blocking in run support and he will be a zone killer with his excellent hands sliding into the middle of the field in the 5-15 yards from the LOS area. That will keep defenses off balance and attempt at trying to be honest.

Ramses Barden has a rare blend of Size, Physicallity and athleticism.. he'll be the #1 working against the #1 CB. He gives a big red zone threat and a safety net for Bradford to just throw up some times (Moss/Plax)

Quan Cosby is the little do it all guy. He's a pretty solid blocker, He'll be the starting kick returner and he'll work out of the #2 spot giving a reliable hands guy... (Hines Ward?)

I don't need to say anything about that line. But I will. It's some big, mean Uglies. With Oher/Smith as the bookends, Their athleticism will cancel out the speed rushers and they should be able to knock anyone out of their way.

Levitre and Kemp are 2 mean guys that do love playing straight ahead. They can anchor very solidly in Pass pro and they are excellent road graders.

Antoine Caldwell is my favorite center in this draft. He has the strength and athleticism to knock out any nasty NT and get his way to the 2nd level.

This will be a scary OL.

Defense: 3-4 Base D, Predicated on the LeBeau Zone Blitz and Baltimore 4-3 Hybrid.

DL: Brace is a top notch 2 gapper, Jones is a prototypical end and Bolden is a guy that seems to be fit for the 3-4 SDE role. Size, Strength, athleticism.... This DL will stop the run often in the background, and if Bolden/Jones play like they have the ability to, they should provide a tough pass rush as well.

OLB's: Everette Brown reminds me so much of DeMarcus Ware it's not funny. He has an ungodly first step, great leverage and strength, plays the run well. Can drop in coverage exceptionally well. He is the Hybrid player as he can drop in and put his hand down next to Jones or he can play Standup. Will Davis is flying under the radar from playing undersized DT this season. Exceptional strength and athleticism and could be a pretty stellar SOLB considering his strength.

ILB: Brinkley is ranked low coming off injury. Scott has him ranked pretty high IMO and with his injury it's hard to peg where he'll go, a lot of places have him ranked pretty low and If I need to move some guys around I will. He reminds me a bit of Levon Kirkland. I understand he's not a DE coming out but the guy is big, physical, hefty and extremely athletic for his size. Gives this defense a leader and a thumper. Lee Robinson is incredibly fast, athletic, is great in coverage and he can attack the backfield very well. He's an OLB in college But I think his skillset is perfect for here. Both guys can stuff the run, attack the LOS, make plays in the backfield and attack the QB. Not to mention drop into coverage.

CB's: DJ Moore is a CB that can do it all. Man, Zone, Blitz, Attack the run. He'll be a beast in a Zone/Blitz Scheme. Victor Harris will flourish in a Zone oriented scheme. It will allow him to get a diagnosis on the play and attack the ball, and the player possibly getting the ball violently. Harris will start out as the punt returner.

S: Taylor Mays is a beast in USC's cover 1 defense. This scheme is going to be predicated a lot on Cover2/Cover3 Principles and with Mays only being responsible for half the field, he should flourish. I expect with his size to be throwing some big hits and with his athleticism catching some INT's and making a lot matchup issues. Hamlin is another guy that makes this defense scary. He is a solid athlete, and another guy that can read the play. He can deliver some bone jarring hits and is plenty happy to come up, and attack the run game.

Thats What I got.

I really like my team. 3-4 base defense given that my Browns run it for the time being, so I'm a bit more familiar with the prospects there. Not going to go crazy into explanation, but my 6 1st round picks are invested in what I believe are the anchors of a good team that runs a 3-4 (Quarterback, Stud Wideout, Left Tackle, Nose Tackle, Pass Rusher and Shutdown Cornerback).

The offense has a lot of strength and power, has very good size at wideout and protected by an absolutely mammoth offensive line that will maul just as much as my skill players. Going with the theory of building the line, I have a ton of beef on the defensive line as well with a bunch of 'backers who can easily adapt to the 3-4, including some that play it already.

Great idea, this was a lot of fun!

Jasper Brinkley is too low at late rounds. Sure, his stock has dropped because of his injury. But a 3-4 team will drool at him. More like 3rd, 4th round.

I've heard some reports on him that say he's too slow to hack it in the pros and could even go undrafted.

Thats why I'm leaving it up to the posters...as long as its within reason its ok by me.

Btw, 3 hours and 45 minutes to go folks! post em up! I hope to have the finalists figured out by tonight, and maybe even have the voting thread up too.

Offence: Mainly going to run the ball behind my huge oline( 340 350 297 332 337). CJ Spiller should has success running behind those beasts with Southerland leading the way. Bradford will be able to use his arm on play action plays going deep to Shipley, dumping it off to Pascoe and have Britt as a great redzone threat.

Defense: I feel I have a very good dline that can both stop the run, and pressure the QB. I have all USC LB's that are all athletic and can be versitle. In the secondary I have to lockdown CB's and a underrated SS in Ellison.

TE Chase Coffman, Missouri

LT Jason Smith, Baylor

LG Tyronne Green, Auburn

RG Cedric Dockery, Texas

RT Andre Smith, Alabama

WR Ramses Barden, Cal Poly

The offense would be run-heavy behind a very good offesnive line with Chase Daniel getting easy looks to guys he knows like Maclin and Coffman and a very lagr etarget in Barden. The offensive line is the center-piece of the entire offense as it contains a group of guys that can do it all; pass block, run block, and pull.

UT Evander Hood, Missouri

NT B.J. Raji, Boston College

RILB Tyrone McKenzie, South Florida

ROLB Larry English, Northern Illinois

CB Victor Harris, Virginia Tech.

SS William Moore, Missouri

FS Derek Pegues, Mississippi St.

CB Jahi Word-Daniels, Georgia Tech.

The defense would be a lot like the Baltimore Ravens with a lot of different looks to help confuse the QBs and would frequently switch from a 3-4 defense to a 4-3 defense. The secondary might be a little shakier but it should be able to maximize the pressure that the front 7 will be getting. The hardest and most paramount part of the defense was the versatility by everyone to play another position on the defense when the front is switched.
