My favorites...

Just take your pick from Dr. Octagon's (Kool Keith) "Dr. Octagonocologyst".. Full of great and experimental beats.. Dan the Automator killed that CD bad. My favorite from, though, would probably be "Blue Flowers".

Then we move on to Esham... Where do I start::: 24/7, Sunshine, Morty's Theme, Comerica, Silicone, Maggot Brain Theory, Slug From a 45, Foodstamp, Acid, Judgment Day, King of Hearts, How do I Plead to Homicide, and even though he CD has been out over a Decade, I still hear "Tony Montana" a lot around here. Good stuff!

For Natas:: Pop Pop, Heaven, Life After Death, and take your pick from the WWW.com (http://WWW.com) album (mainly Another Enemy, Telly Savales, and Forever Fly)

Also a fan of 1st of Tha Month from Bone Thugs..

Art & Life - Not a good song, but love the production.
Tip Drill - like Art & Life, **** lyrics, but the beat alone is ace.

@ Bored of Education, I always hated the no ideas original beat. It annoyed me and reminded me of one of Nas' worst songs Zone Out. To me it was a example of why experimental beats rarely work.

This is why im hot, is literally the worst beat ever and worst song ever. It's really sad because songs like that are the epitome of why hip hop is dead and it's embarassing that rappers like mims can have any success whatsoever when Mel Kiper could probably make a better rap song.

I don't act, I know plenty about hip hop, I just don't know much about underground indie rap that you like. Unlike you, i am open to all genres of rap and I listen to all kinds of it no matter where the person is from or how successful they are commercially. It seems like you hate any rapper that has a flashy car even though some of them are talented rappers and artists. In that sense, you are much more ignorant than I am. You are a very dark and hateful person, and I wouldn't be surprised if you had no friends. Not everyone has to be like you, and you're not always right, that's the sad truth. Deal with it.

Nas is my favourite rapper, not that you would care. BIG & Pac are dead and other than Kanye, none of those rappers have any commercial success recently. I am open to all rap, because I have actually heard music from the rappers you listed and other underground rappers. Some of them are good, but most of them are boring because they rap too many bars and don't have good production. You, on the other hand, never listen to any new rappers but you seem to know more about them than any of us.

His new album is good. Very good production as well. Otherwise you are pretty much right. Other than Illmatic, his best verses are on his guest appearances IMO. He's so good at taking a song title/topic and expanding it into his verse, like in Blindfold Me, which is an awful song but good verse from Nas.

The main problem for Nas' fans is that they are constantly expecting something on par with Illmatic. I like all his later albums except for Streets Disiciple, Nastradamas and for the most part I am. Other than that though I think they have all been very good albums, which are unfairly critisised because they aren't as good as Illmatic. I especially think God's Son is underated, as Nas is full of emotion. It isn't packed with classics, but is a consistantly good album.

ETK, what do you think of the beat of Grinding by Clipse featuring N.E.R.D.?

I'm not a big Neptunes fan, and I don't like snap in beats, so I think it's pretty bad. It suits Clipse well though, and the drum beat grabs your attention, but they needed to add another instrument to keep it interesting. I like Clipse and I like Pusha T though.

Stillmatic/God's Son are sort of a tie for me in 2nd. Stillmatic has amazing songs like One Mic, What Goes Around, Ether & Rule, but also has poor ones like Smoking and Every Ghetto. God's Son is more consistant and still has tracks like Dance, Book Of Rhymes, Thugs Mansion and I Can.

Nas Is Like is a pretty famous song, from a pretty famous rapper. I don't know what you're getting at, any real hip-hop fan knows that song.

serious? how so, i reallly like it.

You could start with the aggravating samples of Wayne saying"yaaah" or the random "pump that", or you could start with the annoying intro. I don't like the contrast of the uptempo drum beat with the slow synths. I don't like the Planet Rock style sounds that are too repetetive. The piano has no rhythm, I could go on and on, there's way too much going on in that beat.

Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth - T.R.O.Y.

Cats are tripping me out dropping tracks that just came out this/last year (and most of dubious quality) in a thread called "Best Beat of All Time". Evidently some of these cats are either new to the music or young in the game.

So your saying its can't be the greatest of all-time because its new? That makes a lot of sense. I mean you would think things would get better as the advance...

Of the thousands of beats you've heard, how exactly do you single out just one as the greatest? What's your criteria?

It's impossible to pick one definite choice, but Sly seems to think you can. All new beats suck according to him, even though new beats are much more advanced.

Thats the problem, there will always be one left out and good beats are heard everday. One day its Throw Some Ds, and the other it can be Deep Cover

The one i can listen to 100000000000 times. It was quite an easy choice for me.

That's the problem though, there's tons of beats I can listen to a billion times and still will want to hear them again. It's like choosing which breath I took over the last month was my favorite. Well, I guess I'm exaggerating. I guess I could try to figure out my favorite by making a big ass bracket and having beats go head to head until there was one standing. But I might have a different result if I did it another day in a different mood.

Don't add more to my post than what's there. You've pulled everything I've bolded from the ether.
The guy asked for the best beat ever. Ok, so that's impossible, I think we can all agree with that. But rather than go wishy washy and throw up some list, drop the one that you truly believe is a contender and roll with it...or weigh the multiple choices you have in your head and make up your mind. Simple and plain, pick something.

Best Beat Ever also suggests that the beats before it and after it will be inferior. Some of these beats listed that just dropped in the last year or two will be forgotten day after tomorrow. I picked one that's managed to stand the test of time.

I'm not sure in what fashion these new beats are more advanced. The technology, sure...but that's not going to make you a "better" beat.

Ask any producer, it's not what you're using, it's what you're doing with it.

But I think it's safe to say that it would be pretty tough for any legitimate producer to make a better beat with an old school casio, than another legitimate producer could make with a triton. Too bad most of the beats made today might as well have been made on a broken ass casio. Most these producers don't even utilize the equipment they have.

I listed probably 10 beats already in this thread, so I think I picked just fine. It's true, many beats will be forgotten, and the one you listed is a classic, but don't generalize that new producers are bad.

I would never say that the new producers are bad. Some of the new cats are sick. I'm just suggesting that if you're picking the best beat ever you might want to really think about wether to include that hot joint that you just heard last week.
If T.R.O.Y. came out in the last month, I might not have thrown it up there. There's something to be said for longevity...but if it's brand new and you think it's got the staying power to become a "classic" then by all means, holla and let the rest of us know.

Of course I realize that but there is a difference b/w sampling something old and making a new beat out of it and just taking a beat and rapping over it. Biggie barely changed the beat at all. And Im not knockin it cuz I love the song, but its funny to me that someone brought it up as Biggies beat.
