View Full Version : 1/28 RavenOfProphecy's Complete 2009 NFL Draft Player Projections

I've finally completed my projections for each of the seniors in the 2009 NFL Draft. Note that this is not necessarily where I personally have a player graded, but is more reflective of where I think their draft stock is overall at this point. I have individual rankings that I will be putting out at another time, so think of this as more of an NFL Draft Advisory panel kind of thing. I'm not going to even attempt to count how many seniors I graded, but it's safe to say there's many more than there are spots in the draft. At this point (1/28), I have edited the list to include changes from the various all-star games that have been played, including the Senior Bowl. Please leave some feedback if you read through the list - it took a lot of time to put this together. Thanks! P.S. I wonder what the longest post ever is...

Just to let you know you missed a couple Ohio University notable seniors. Mark Parson is a draftable player at cornerback, DE Jameson Hartke/TE David Carter could both be solid free agent pick-ups.

Good work. I will comment more a bit later after all the games

Carter is only projected around 4.9, which probably won't get him signed, Parson may have an outside shot at being a UDFA but he doesn't really stand out in any area, and is just one of a handful of clones. Hartke is someone who doesn't have a consistent body of work.

I just thought I'd post Mike Mayock's top 20 with Clay Matthews at #21 along with his positional rankings for seniors at DT, OT and OC. This might allow you to upgrade some of your list.

Carter may get more looks than the more discussed Mooney. Mooney is the more productive of the two, but when it comes down to it, he simply won't be athletic enough or a good enough blocker to warrant much consideration. An H-B type.

Carter is the slightly bigger, slightly more athletic Ohio TE who may be less productive, but is just as reliable as a pass-catcher and a better blocker. I would give Carter the edge over Mooney who was really banged up all season.

Parson is good enough in coverage and a good enough tackler to not only warrant consideration in Free Agency, but perhaps the later rounds of the NFL Draft. Solid size, speed, athleticism, solid production throughout his career. He may not stand out in any one area, but he's simply a pretty good, consistent player. To me, he's a 6th-7th Round pick at this point who would fit in just about any defense as a #3 at best, but more likely #4 or #5 CB.

I found you may have been a bit optimistic with the draft stock of wide receivers in particular. Citing twenty that fall between the 3rd and 5th round. Not a huge deal obviously, but for the most part a lot of those guys are a bit lower on my board (Jamarko Simmons, Jaison Williams, Marko Mitchell, Brian Robiskie, Marion, Underwood, perhaps Dillard, etc.)

Nice work as I said, good to see someone putting in time over their break. I +repped you for it.

I'll have to take a look at that later. Generally about 15 WRs get taken between rounds 3-5 (12 last year, 16 the year before, 14 in 2006.) There were 10 WRs in the second round last year, though.

Kuntz didn't really do anything in 2007 and 2006, so he's basically got one year of pseudo production (3.5 sacks, for a career total of four), and he's not some kind of physical specimen or anything. I really love Crum but I really don't think he'll be drafted, there's way too many Maurice Crums in each draft.

He got double teamed on almost every play though cause he was our only dlineman looking like one all season (except ethan in the last few games). I'll agree to disagree cause i am not that experienced in this kinda stuff but he really stood out this year imho. Cant wait till stockton comes to south bend though.

So far three underclassmen (to my knowledge) have declared, but I am not going to add them for another couple of weeks until all of the underclassmen declare. Two interesting prospects already in Sen'Derrick Marks and Vontae Davis, though, so keep an eye out for the update a day or two after the underclassmen deadline!

Just wanted to let you guys know there will probably be about three more big updates coming to this at some point.

1. I'm adding the underclassmen that declared soon (I still need to evaluate some) and change a few stocks around for the Shrine Game. Also adding some senior prospects too.

2. I'll update after the Senior Bowl and Combine to reflect changes in stock from those two games.

3. I'll update after the Pro Days as well.

DT Peria Jerry (6'3", 295, 5.00)
Projection: Round 2

Looks like you got the most draftable Ole Miss guys, but one guy who could be added is OLB Ashlee Palmer (6-2 225 4.55) but he is probably just a late round prospect. There are a few other prospects who are possible late round-UDFA types like SS JaMarca Sanford (5-10 210 4.6), MLB Tony Fein (6-3 255 4.8), and CB Dustin Mouzon 5-11 185 4.5) but they most likely won't be drafted.

Alright guys, just made some changes to the stocks of the players who played in the Shrine Game, and added in underclassmen! If a mod would be so kind as to change the topic title to...

RavenOfProphecy's Complete 2009 NFL Draft Player Projections (Updated 1/22!)

...that would be great!

Also, Don Vito: I did forget Ashlee Palmer, I'll add him on after the Senior Bowl though!

I'm going to consider it unlikely that only 24 players are first rounders. :D

Honestly, great job on this.

Eric Moncur, Defensive End from Miami (Fla.) will be in this draft, I'm pretty sure. He played in only 3 games this year, but was not granted a medical redshirt. He will probably be no more than a late rounder.

Sucks because he could have been a 1st day pick if he was healthy this year!

I'm evaluating players strictly on their draft stock without really considering a lot of other stuff. There are only 24 players I think deserve a first-round grade - I know there will be 32 first-round picks, but I feel as though about 1/4 of those will be undeserving of their draft position based on talent level.

How did you rate most of these since they never appeared on TV. What basis do you use to evaluate players if you have no film on most of them. You didn't even have the Senior Bowl info to rate them. It looks like a lot of worthless subjective work to me with nothing to back up your projections.
Sorry to be mean but please explain on what basis you rated them???

What are your thoughts on DeAndre Wright and Matt Quillen of New Mexico?

I think Wright is 6-7th and Quillen an UDFA, but you didn't mention either. I actually like Wright more that Quin.

Texas Longhorns:

WR Quan Cosby (5'11", 205, 4.50)
Projection: Round 3

OG Cedric Dockery (6'4", 320, 5.30)
Projection: Round 7

DE Brian Orakpo (6'4", 260, 4.75)
Projection: Round 1

DT Roy Miller (6'1", 300, 5.05)
Projection: Round 5

CB Ryan Palmer (5'10", 190, 4.45)
Projection: Round 6
__________________________________________________ _______________

That is a pretty good projection. I think DE Henry Melton also might have a outside shot at getting drafted in the later rounds.

He's going to be one of my big Senior Bowl movers, I don't know if he'll reach the first but you can at least expect to see him as a second round grade afterwards.

For players from smaller schools, I considered their measurables, career statistics, any news stories pertaining to character, and highlights I could find. If I knew someone who might have watched them, I asked them questions about the players. The same thing goes for more popular players, with the added benefit of me getting to see them play on TV. How many people do you think caught a bunch of Delaware games last year?

When I saw him, he wasn't really making any plays. He also has a pretty bad frame (he looks like a pot-bellied safety) and his numbers this year were also thoroughly unimpressive. Every year there are Brandon Browners and Ernest Shazors, guys that people think are mid-round picks but go undrafted, and I think he has a great shot at being one of those guys.

He had a down year no doubt about that, the stats were down because he missed 5 games.

He missed three, but still. He should have had more than 3 tackles per game.

Just an update - I have edited the rankings pretty extensively, factoring in the Shrine Game, Senior Bowl, and the first two days of Texas vs. the Nation practices. There is a large emphasis on draft stock over where I personally have a player graded, so keep that in mind - this is mainly to help people see where a player's stock is at disregarding where I personally have them graded.

You forgot to put #25 overall next to Sean Smith's projection. ;)

Haha. I think the Dolphins are a legitimate team that Sean Smith could land with in the first round, assuming New England takes Brian Cushing or Alphonso Smith.

You should add Temple DT Terrence Knighton to your list! Three years starter, the Owls defensive MVP the last 2 seasons and he's playing very well at the Texas vs Nation practices at 320 lbs.

A couple things I noticed were Sean Smith-DB Utah being projected as a 1st rounder.

Right now he's a 2nd-3rd round type prospect but I can totally see him rising.

Hopefully not though. I'd love for my team to draft him in the 2nd.

Robert Ayers UDFA caught my eye too. I doubt that happens but who would've predicted EJ Henderson going undrafted last year?

Great stuff buddy.

TheBow, what can you tell me about Donald Washington? I noticed you have him round four in your signature, and I have him as a UDFA. I'm always open to discussion on projections though; if you really think he's worth a fourth rounder, I'd like to hear what you think of him.

Being an Ohio State student I've gotten to see a lot of Washington.

He shouldn't have come out this year as he probably woudl've been projected as a 1st-2nd rd prospect in 2010 but I don't think he goes undrafted.

3rd-5th is where I'd peg him at.

Sean Smith would kill beside Donte Whitner.

For the player projections, do you do a full mock draft or do you base it off of what you know of the players?

Just what I know. A seven round mock draft probably won't happen from me this year, but if I do that, it'll probably happen right near the draft.

Minor things with the Virginia guys:
It's John Phillips, not Josh.
Even though I love Sintim, I think he'll be a second rounder.
And I just wanted to say that I still hate Ogletree for stupidly leaving early.
