The Killers are as much of an indie band as U2 is and even though I love the band, The Flaming Lips have been on Warners Bros for the past 10 years, how are they an indie band?
any way, in no perticular order:
M. Ward, Arctic Monkeys, Gogol Bordello, Broken Social Scene, CocoRosie, Devendra Banhart, Emir Kusturica & The No Smoking Orchestra, Tegan & Sara (the most talanted lesbian twins in the biz), Joanna Newsome, Antony and the Johnsons, and the master, Tom Waits. I definitely forgot alot of great bands but I've put way too much time into this post as is.

Point taken. But they definitely have the indie roots. Even with mainstream success there musical stylings have not changed. Look at the Shins. They still have that distinct sound from when they were "Flake" to now.

Not sure exactly how many would count as Indie mind you, people seem to have different interpretations of what exactly Indie is.

I'm going to agree here. It's a common misconception that indie bands that have mainstream success are no longer indie bands. Indie is more than just "are they signed to a major label or not." It has more to do with the unique sound to go along with the band's independant roots.

Maybe, but they aren't far off a few of the other bands in this thread, so I thought I would just chuck them in.

Few British bands banging around there which is cool, I like most of the bands listed. New Pornographers, Decemberists, Shins, Bloc Party, Battle, Muse etc etc etc etc
My indie lust is dying a bit but the answering machines, and the little one's are cool, saw them live recently in london for a mates band (a beggars opera was supporting). Was quite a few American suit types there to watch (and some fans). I think a couple of them got signed off the back of my drunken antics alone (well, thats what im saying at least)
Bright Eyes is pretty much the stereotypical indie band. Conor Oberst is quite a genious though.

Yeah, i'm not that keen on their new stuff though. I was a massive fan when Helicopter and their first EP was about. The new album is alright, I really like the first few tracks, sort of dips after that though.

idk know what indie means now
but HORSE the Band is on a independent label which is what that used to mean
saw them last, it was totally insane, one of the best shows i've ever seen up there with Slayer & Mastodon

most people dont consider an indie label to soley represent an indie band. the likes of slayer and mastadon are considered metal.
i think the consensus is that indie has certain rock ties and almost an unrefined sound to it. take bright eyes as the perfect example. very raw and rudimentary.
I forgot the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Belle & Sebastien (not sure if they are indie, but they are underrated)
The Decemberists (loved the video for 16 Military Wives)
The Shins
Block Party
The Killers
Those are two of my top 5 favorite bands.
Bloc Party's new CD is the one im currently listening to,
and where in Dallas are you from?

Death Cab, even though I really don't like them that much. If you count Oasis, they are my choice by far.
Yea.. where you from Paul? From one Dallas citizen to another.
And does Motion City Soundtrack count as indie? Cuz their badas..
In Irving right now, but East Dallas is where I was born and raised. So I still consider it home.

lol oh man
The Killers are not indie anymore. They used to be the only rock group that I liked, then I heard that new CD and realized how frustrating the music industry is. It's sad that a band like the Killers had to sell out and change their style completely.

Define "Emo," if you mean whiny songs about g/f problems I agree. That said; a lot of bands are classified as "Emo" undeservedly by people who only like rap music and don't understand, or care for, Rock of any kind.

GF problems, parent problems, and write poems on Myspace. Those Emos. Bands I would classify as emo would be: Thursday, The Used, My Chemical Romance and other band with a whine lead singer.
I am a fan of rock, that's why I started the thread.

Lee Marvin Computer Arm is pretty much the best band around currently. If you like big tits and Saturdays you'll love them.
The Black Lips are one of the the few bands that wear their influences on their sleeves but dont let them overpower their songs, theyre really doing something quite interesting sound wise.
Jay Reatard sounds like what the 80's should have sounded like, with a smart combination of DEVO synthy styles with a punk mindset.
Lightning Bolt and Boris are the only noise/jazz bands that dont get boring after 3 ******s of listening to them.
Death From Above 1979 was one of the best bands in the last 10 years, and so few people have listened to them.
