Take into account injuries to Chris Young and the Maddux/Wolf deals. I'm sure we'd see a much different picture
Maddux was garbage away from Petco and Wolf was garbage period for the Padres. Plus Chris Young is overrated (aka MORE PETCO EFFECT).

Pirates at Kansas City on a day when Greinke isn't pitching or Oakland Raiders at Detroit Lions, this year.
At the Pirates/KC game, you can drink till the 7th inning. You can't drink after halftime in the Oakland/Detroit game. There is your answer.

True, although I disagree on the Young statement. The Toronto rotation most certainly benefited from the emergences of Shaun Marcum and Jesse Litsch and that one occasional good year from Burnett while the Padres obviously fell through.
Had Young and Maddux been there the full year I think things would've turned out a little bit more even

That wasn't the point of the graph. The point was to show the difference between a top flight staff and a bottom rung staff. Unsurprisingly, the biggest difference was in the #1 starters.
PS: Chris Young sucks. :P

Pirates are after Eric Hinske. Meh. I liked him when he was a rookie, but hasn't played up to those standards the rest of his career. He is going to come off the bench for us. We are also after Luis Gonzalez.
I hope we can sign a starter before ST.

A club source told the Star-Telegram that the Rangers are still willing to deal Jarrod Saltalamacchia straight up for Clay Buchholz.
As well they should be. It's not an ideal deal for the Red Sox, but if they see Salty as a long-term catcher, it might be worth it for them to make the move. Because of the pitching depth they added, Buchholz could be a complete non-factor this year if retained.

Heilman is solid but he lets up way to many HR's especially in big spots. I don't know if a team is planning to put him back in the rotation but if he's in the bullpen your going to get mad at all the HR's he gives up. In Wrigley Field it could get even worse.

And to Brodeur, the main reason we supposedly got Olson was for Peavy. Now, if that just didn't work out and the Cubs realized they are better off trading, that's fine. But Aaron Heilman, come on now. At least get us a lefty specialist or something.

Alright Cubs fans. Here it is. I think the only appropriate title is:
Clusterfuck of Heilman Hatred
Author Note: This is just a small sample of some quotes I've organized from this board last year. If I had some of the others from various Mets boards, well... it wouldn't be pretty.
And so it begins...
In my fantasy land, Aaron Heilman was taken in a tragedy. It involved a pack of wild dogs, a mack truck, and a fire.
Aaron Heilman has an inverted W, but he hasn't had arm problems. Just being ******* terrible problems.
Thanks Heilman.- Said after he blew a game to the Astros. Heilman's line: 1.1 IP, 4H, 4 ER, 1BB, 1 HR... to Mark Loretta. This L brought Heilman's record to 1-5 on the year.
Don't bring us all down. That's Heilman.- In response to a poster saying "Way to blow it Mets."
I'll trade you Heilman for him.- In response to another poster offering to trade Eric Gagne. He was that unbearable.
Heilman is so bad.- Just a nice little wrap up.
And we will conclude this with my personal favorite. After Heilman blows a game for you Cubs fans, I will allow you to use, just properly cite me. Just have to change Mets to Cubs, and you should be good to go.
Dear Aaron Heilman,
Do you get some kind of sick thrill out of blowing games for the Mets you **********? I'm insisting that you never wear a Mets jersey again for the rest of your life. You are a worthless bag of **** reliever who provides nothing positive to this ball club what so ever. I think every Mets fan would sleep better at night if you turned in your uniform and paycheck and never played for the Mets again. You should be executed. Goodbye and goodluck in the whole not-sucking dick anymore attempt.

San Francisco already signed Edgar Renteria, Randy Johnson, Bobby Howry and Jerremy Affeldt, a commitment of more than $20 million for 2009, but if they don't get Ramirez the question has to be asked: Wouldn't that $20 million-plus have been better spent on Manny?
Yes, improving your starting rotation and bullpen while adding a possibly valuable middle infielder is a much worse than spending the money on one declining (you'll see) outfielder with horrid defense.
8. Garret Anderson. Here's another terrific hitter caught in a nightmare of a hitting market. He's been among the more productive outfielders in the AL over the last several years, and while he has seemingly been around forever, he's still only 36.

here's the fun fact about manny when you watch him. he just makes such solid contact when he hits the ball, regardless of where it is. he may lose some power numbers, but manny is NOT just a power hitter, and with his frame and swing, he'll be fine for maybe 2 more years. which is all the cards can legitimately expect out of anyone.

He's a very valuable offensive commodity, but when you factor in his 2007 offensive stats with his defense he's going to be severely overpaid. If he hits like he did in 2008 than he can overcome his defensive liabilities, but I just don't see that happening.

Baltimore should have a top 10 offense if Wieters is brought up early enough. Plus, they could have an elite defensive team as well (depends on how the two corners play). If they didn't play in the best division in history I'd say they could surprise people, but I could still see them winning up to 80 games.

Not at this market they don't. It's a crappy deal considering he hasn't been actually worth more than what he's earning on average since that magical season 5 years ago. 100 innings of Ben Sheets is much more valuable than 180 innings of Oliver Perez.

Orioles acquired Rich Hill from the Cubs today for a Player To Be Named Later. Hill is very excited at his new opportunity as ace of the Oriole Rotation
Baltimore Failed Cubs '09, bringing the championship to the Charm City
I love the trade and the fact that it gets rid of Burres. If Rich can regain form, its a steal.

It's actually a solid deal. He's a league average SP and the league average SP usualy gets 11 or 12 million.
League Average is like 10 mil on the high side.
The last 3 years for Ollie:
2006: Worth around 300K~
2007: Worth around 15 mil~
2008: Worth about 9 mil~
That 3.9 WAR year he had in 2007, in addition to 2004 are the only years above average.

i have to believe that the Cubs are going to be doing something trade wise... because all of these stupid moves they've made this off season would be entirely useless otherwise.
I don't think we've acquired anyone in this series of trades who will ever contribute anything to the major league team.
That's not to say that what we've given up has been anything special... far from it... but we've gotten literally nothing back.

Buster Olney, Rob Neyer, Jayson Stark and Steve Phillips have a draft to create the best team with a cap of $40 million. It is plain awesome.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3864280
Best line:
Rob Neyer: Would you gents like to help an apprentice BBWAA member who doesn't know what he's doing? I've already spent $9.6 million on three fine young players. Now I want to spend (approximately) $4 million on another fine young player. Is that just incredibly stupid, this early in the draft? I wish I were better with the figuring …
Buster Olney: I picked the Indians to win the World Series last year. I have no advice worthy of offering.
Jayson Stark: Wasn't one of us an actual GM? That's your guy. I can't even balance my checkbook.
Steve Phillips: I would just recommend avoiding Mo Vaughn, Roger Cedeno and Kevin Appier.
