I just found out recently that my father grew up a NY Giants fan before they moved to San Fran. However instead of continuing to be a fan of theirs from across the country, he wisely switched to being a Yankee fan.

Actually many of original fandom of the Mets came from fans of the departed Brooklyn Dodgers and NY Giants baseball teams. New Yorkers can correct me if I'm wrong but after those teams moved west many fans, mostly the Dodger fans because of the rivalry, could not cheer for Yankees but were left without a team.

This is true. But the Mets came a handful of years later. There were 4 or 5 years when the Yankees were the only team in NY. My father was very little when the Giants moved, I think 8 or so.

First of all, why the **** do I care? I'm not a part of the Blanton v. Maine debate, although Maine's stats are generally much better, which means he's giving his team a greater opportunity to win. It's not Maine's fault that Blanton must have got more run support.
Blanton got .49 more runs per game. That still shouldn't explain why a team about 17% more likely to win with Blanton on the mound.

Are you suggesting a higher average leads to more runs? OBP and SLG have much more correlation to runs scored and Burrell is superior in both. If you can't understand that then you have a lot to learn young padawan.
A higher batting average with guys on leads to more runs. Especially when there's a .100 difference

the "I watch the... therefore I know everything about them, and you don't" line is probably the stupidest thing anyone can say.
So basically, we should take advice and listen to people who obviously don't watch Burrell or haven't seen more than a dozen games of his?

A lot of baseball can be broken out in statistics. Seeing things can trick you into thinking things that are incorrect. Also, overanalyzing stats can trick you the same way.

Way to totally ignore the last few pages of posts and come to a simple conclusion that has no evidence to support it whatsoever. Are you going to pull out a "(insert your team's #1 starter) rules!" while you're at it? I think that would be enough to totally prove everything and everyone wrong.

Blanton is a decent MLB starter who is not an ace or a #2. I'd be more comfortable with him as a #4, but I'll take him as a #3. He eats innings and is generally healthy. I'm glad to have him at this price for 2 more seasons.

Look, I like the Phils and all, but Blanton is nothing better than a good #4 starter (and a better clutch* post-season hitter than Alex Rodriguez :)), but you're coming off like a little baby when you're complaining about everyone hating on the Phils. Ibanez isn't that good and he's definitely not worth $10 million under any circumstances. Blanton is a good #4. They're basically both just another guy.

Not a big MLB fan but I was looking at some stuff last night and I want to know about the Giants.
They have a good starting rotation and a solid closer, but the offense is supposed to be dreadful.
However, after researching some of their players, they actually have a bunch of young guys who have decent career #s in terms of batting average. If I remember correctly, most of their lineup batted over .280 last season.
What are the chances they actually contend for that division this year?
And also, I know they were rumored to be in the hunt for Manny. What happened to that? It is it still possible? And if it is, would that move make them a legit contender in the NL?

Ehhhh. The offense isn't very good. I'd say best case scenario they can get to .500 or maybe 2 games over. They're more likely in the 75-77 win range though.
They're not getting Manny unless someone takes on Aaron Rowand. And that ain't happening. But yes, if they land Manny, they're contenders.

BA is not a good way to judge players, the problem with that lineup is a serious lack of power and OBP. The Giants were 28th in slugging and 25th in OBP, that is a problem. Their pitching staff is good enough to possibly keep them competitive in a weak division, but they need a power bat badly.

I was thinking today that MLB Network better have some type of minor league show. It would be awesome to see highlights of the big prospects weekly. They could easily do a 30 min show everynight or at least have an hour long weekly program. Something has to be done to cover the minors on the network.

so when will Carlos Delgado get his MVP award?
Carlos Delgado took the high road with respect to whether he rightfully deserved the 2003 American League MVP award, since he finished as the runner-up in balloting to an admittedly steroid using Alex Rodriguez.
Responding through his agent, David Sloane, Delgado succinctly said about the subject: "I have no thoughts!"

I was thinking today that MLB Network better have some type of minor league show. It would be awesome to see highlights of the big prospects weekly. They could easily do a 30 min show everynight or at least have an hour long weekly program. Something has to be done to cover the minors on the network.
Jon Mayo should get a show sooner or later. Yeah they were really stringent with the programming I feel, but it helps Advanced Media (website) so that's all good for now. We get to keep Fantasy 411....for now

At one point Bay, Nady and McLouth could've been the best offensive outfield in baseball. It's a shame Selig's concept of fairness forces teams to have fire sales on an almost annual basis. Pirates could've been decent.

Ryan Howard signed a 3 year, 58 million dollar deal. What are the chances he stays after that?
Cole Hamels. Cy Young chance?
I love the Phillies. Personally I don't think that Howard will be with us after that third year, he'll be a DH for the Red Sox when Ortiz leaves is my guess. And Hamels has a decent shot only if he gets run support unlike he did last year. Plus he has more publicity with the World Series and all. He had like 6+ losses or no decisions in 2 run games last year, something crazy. I love the Phillies.

Yeah, I realize that he'd be on the tail end of his prime but at 31, do you think a team will give him a shot at 1B if they have the money and a surrounding team able to contend? He's defense is god awful but is his power bat [take the bad (Ks) with the good (HRs, RBIs)] worth it for a team able to contend in the NL?

And because arguably the greatest right-handed hitter of modern time still finds himself unemployed, after spending the last three months of this past season reminding us all that there actually is a baseball team in Los Angeles, he certainly falls under the "screwed royally" category for the moment.
This run-on sentence gave birth to another run-on sentence.
And Manny is getting "royally screwed"? Really Stephen A? He just turned down an offer of $25M for one year. Yep, that sounds like he's getting screwed royally to me. The guy quit on his previous team mid-season, and yet he just received a $25M offer as a 37-year-old outfielder that plays terrible defense. Yep, poor Manny. Teams are treating him very badly.

Abreu was not a lineup carrier, but he was also a poor leader. When he was traded for 5 cents on the dollar to the Yanks, the team went on a huge tear because he was gone, and they could relax. No way the Phils were bringing him back. He was sent out partially because he wasn't part of the culture.

Well I'm glad someone other than Rob Neyer is finally bringing this up. Seriously, A-Rod's apology means nothing to me. Could no one else tell that A-Rod was trying to repeat, verbatim, a script that had been written for him? Seriously, it makes me angry that people are nearly giving him a free pass for a completely fake apology that very well was a lie.
I don't know why he chose to script it. I may very well have been protection, but it certainly seemed like he was lying. By him picking that time period (only the Texas years) he was sure of protecting the majority of his legacy, protecting his future team as well as the majority of his early years. Does anyone really believe he wasn't taking steroids in high school? I know most of my high school baseball team did. To be honest, after that interview I expect that he has been taking steroids since he was 15 years old. I bet he's taking something right now that is merely undetectable. Heck, HGH is still undetectable by the MLB testing program because they only do piss tests. I would not be surprised to find out that 95 of the 104 positive tests from 2003 have merely switched to HGH or something even more safe.
A-rod, you had the opportunity to come clean and receive our forgiveness and instead you come with general statements and lies. If you had only been sincere and told the entire truth, you might have had the opportunity to protect your image. But you chose to lie. And you're a bad actor. So the truth showed through.

When people say "A-Rod was the one I trusted" I sort-of laughed. I trust, and firmly trust, Ken Griffey Jr. to have been clean. Then again, wasn't there an alleged phone call deal with him? Oh well. But Griffey Jr. was insane and if memory serves in the earlygoings of the 61 chase, he was right with Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire.
But when thinking about steroids, I echo McGwire. Forget the past, no more investigations we all know way more than we wanted to about the subject. Work right now to find adequate HGH testing (like NIP said, something other than piss) and rid HGH out of baseball.
The steroid issue is around now with HGH. I'm willing to bet the same amount of people caught in the 90s-00s, are doing HGH now.
It sucks, but now I really don't care.

The timeline you used isn't exactly fair, 1990 was only Griffey's 2nd season while Bonds already had 4 under his belt. Also, there is no way those BA numbers are correct, both are significantly lower. Instead of '90-'00, I used the first 10 years of their careers and added some stats:
Griffey 89-99
Games-1535
2B-320
HR-398
RBI-1152
SB-167
BA-.296
OBP-.378
SLG-.563
OPS-.942
Bonds 86-96
Games-1583
2B-333
HR-334
RBI-993
SB-380
BA-.288
OBP-.402
SLG-.549
OPS-.951
Bonds was a little better at getting on base while Griffey had a little more power, but overall very similar. Bonds of course also had many more SB's.

Since 1990 there has only been 2 times where an MVP award winner hasn't had a batting average over .300 and they were .296 and .298. Like it or not, it seems the writers definitely use BA in their judgements regardless of what their OBP is.
