I'm excited about the Smoltz signing for the Sox. Very low risk, high reward. He won't come in until late in the season and he could be pretty lethal out of the pen in October, at the very least.

The Red Sox have like 8-9 starters right now if you include young players like Bucholz.

Yeah. We are collecting them. Ideally, I think the rotation ends up being like this.

1. Beckett
2. Lester
3. Daisuke
4. Buchholz/Masterson
5. Penny

I'm not sure where that would put Wakefield. He would probably end up retiring or taking a rather long DL stint in that scenario. There's doubts about three of those guys, so I doubt the Red Sox finally let him retire. Hopefully, this all works out and everybody stays healthy and we don't even need Smotlz to start. I think he would be much more valuable for us solidifying our bullpen.

You'd think Smoltz signed with the intentions of joining the rotation though because he's surely not going to unseat Papelbon as the closer and has no reason to be a 41 year old set up man.

He probably did. He still has a rather large chance of getting into the rotation though. I hope he doesn't. I think we can get a lot more out of him in the pen. Certainly wouldn't complain if somebody broke down around October though. He's money in the playoffs.

Overall he does. Although just a utility infielder. But he had knack for getting cheap hits in big spots. Also the Venezuelan players love him. He'll be on a major league staff again sooner than later.

I laugh whenever a White Sox fan tells me "they never hated AJ," or they don't remember that he played for the Twins. They think his career started for them, and that he isn't "that bad" of a guy.

Oh, and that's the only good thing Michael Barrett has ever done.

I think the HOF decides which hat the players wear. The players used to choose, but then Tampa Bay tried to pay Wade Boggs to wear their gear into the Hall and the HOF decided they would have the final say from now on. I'm pretty sure he'll go in with an "A" on his dome.

But I'm sure he'll have some clever hat that says "Ricky" across the top since he's more important than any team anyway.

He will back up off the base on routine grounders, and when other infielders throw him the ball, he will run up and dive to catch and tag the base. It's the only way he knows how to play defense.

In other news, the Braves have emerged as the likely destination and are very close to signing 33 year old, Kenshin Kawakami. Pretty much the only thing I like about Wren thus far, his interest in the foreign market.

Here's hoping we get Lowe too.

I'm actually in the anti-Jim Rice camp, but I've always been very harsh in my HOF selections.

I would like to see Tim Raines get in at some point. Raines was the man earlier in his career, and made a nice 20 years out of it. Probably won't get in the same year as Ricky though, as he is a lesser version of him in many ways (plus he only got 25% last year)

Timothy Raines (born September 16, 1959 in Sanford, Florida), nicknamed "Rock",[1] is a former left fielder in Major League Baseball who played for six teams from 1979 to 2002 and was best known for his 13 seasons with the Montreal Expos. Regarded as one of the top leadoff hitters[2][3][4] and baserunners in the sport's history, Raines stole at least 70 bases in each of his first six full seasons (1981–1986), leading the National League in stolen bases each season from 1981 to 1984, with a career high of 90 steals in 1983. Raines also led the NL in runs scored twice (1983 and 1987). Raines batted over .300 in five full seasons and over .320 from 1985 to 1987, winning the 1986 NL batting title with a .334 average. He also had six full seasons with an on base percentage above .390.

With 808 steals in his career, Raines has the fourth-highest total in major league history, behind Rickey Henderson, Lou Brock and Ty Cobb.[5] Until 2008,[6] his career stolen base percentage (84.7%) was the highest in MLB history for players with 300 or more attempts[7] and he was successful on 40 consecutive steal attempts between July 1993 and August 1995, setting an American League record at the time (the record was broken by Ichiro Suzuki in May 2007, when he completed 45 consecutive steals).

Among switch hitters, Raines ranks sixth in career hits (2,605), fourth in runs (1,571), walks (1,330) and times on base (3,977), fifth in plate appearances (10,359), seventh in singles (1,892), doubles (430), total bases (3,771) and at bats (8,872), eighth in triples (113) and tenth in extra base hits (713). He holds Expos/Washington Nationals franchise records for career runs (947), steals (635), singles (1,163), triples (82) and walks (793), and was the seventh player whose career began after 1945 to retire with over 1,500 runs and 100 triples.[8] His 1,966 games in left field ranked seventh in major league history when he retired

I really think Raines is hurt by the fact that there's no longer a team in Montreal, and when there was nobody watched them. Plus his nickname is Rock, well before that lame guy with the eyebrow stole it.

I'll probably get flamed for this, but you could make a case against Mark McGwire even without the steroids stuff. He was a one-dimensional player throughout much of his career, and wasn't much of a defender at first base. Other first baseman like Jeff Bagwell and Frank Thomas have had better careers.

I also can't wait to hear Joe Morgan talk about how much better he is than anyone who has ever lived, and how no players from since he retired ever deserve to be in the HoF.

That man is such a joke. Great player, but such a joke of a person.

One dimensional how? He was a tremendous offensive player and deserves to be in the hall for it.

Meh, Conseco and Bonds are bigger.

I think BF51 meant comparing the players not considering roids.

Not really. Bonds was a top 20 player ever prior to roiding, and Bagwell, not so much.

Yah, Bonds was god before roids.

I just hate him because of the MVP(s) he stole from Pujols, but he was still god.

I meant bigger as in visually and using. Not how much it improved them. And he was on pace to be a top 20 player, not was one before he started imo.

Right, I'm throwing steroids out across the board in my comparison. I think Bagwell had a better career than McGwire without steroids in the equation.

Personally I would vote McGwire in. If you don't fail a drug test when you are playing you should not have that count against you. What I'm saying is that as a total package I never considered Mark McGwire an elite baseball player. But I like defense and baserunning and stuff like that too.

It's not like Bagwell was Pujols at 1st base or had any real speed ever.

No, but statistically Bagwell is more impressive or at least equal in most all categories outside HRs.

well, those are 3 averages. Bagwell was overall a more complete hitter, better baserunner (although he wasn't great by any means) and at the very least equal in fielding. All around, Bagwell > McGwire.
