Hello everyone. While I have been on/off again on this website I have become obsessed with music. And since I noticed that the last thread essentially died a while ago I figured 'why not'? My tastes have changed greatly, back in 2004 all I listened to was Post-Hardcore music like Glassjaw, Thrice, etc. Ever since then I have picked up the guitar and branched out to all kinds of unique and fantastic music (beyond just rock and metal even). So here I share with you some of my favorite Rock/Metal bands, most underrated and of course overrated:

My taste is rather diverse, check my Sputnik music piechart: http://www.sputnikmusic.com/profile.php?name=shiver44

Favorite

Tool - Both Lateralus and Aenima are a near flawless combination of 90s hard rock with 70s progressive rock. Danny Carey's almost tribal drumming style shows a lot of sheer technicality, but that technicality is tempered and controlled so that he doesn't play anything that doesn't fit with what the rest of the band is doing. Maynard James Keenan is the ideal hard rock vocalist in my opinion and can hold notes for a very long time. Both the guitar and bass riffs are engraved in my brain. I could go on and on.

Opeth - Never have I heard a band that could produced the heaviest music I've heard with the most beautiful, sometimes in the same song. Mikael Akerfeldt's vocal range is beyond human and his guitar playing incorporates atypical chords, scales and structures. I have a hard time decided which album I like the most; I say it is a toss-up between Still Life and Ghost Reveries although most would say Blackwater Park.

Underrated

Cynic - This is a recent find of mine. I saw that Traced In Air was metal record of the year all over the net, and yet I couldn't find it anywhere. I was intriqued because they have only made two albums that were 15 years apart. So I ordered it off of Amazon and I was amazed, then I got into Focus which was just as good. I am not sure how to descripe their music, so I suggest you look for yourself.

Anathema - This band went from being a Doom metal band in the early 90s to a sound that sounds like a Roger Waters led Pink Floyd, only darker. Get Judgement, you won't be disappointed.

Dredg - El Cielo is a masterpiece, a concept album based on sleep paralysis. Unusual instrumentation and soaring vocals are what make this album, not to mention that all the songs were produced seperately, so each song has a distinct flair. Think of them as an Alt/Art rock equivalent to Tool.

Abstract

Godspeed You! Black Emperor's F# A# * - This is the soundtrack to the end of the world. The perfect album for a long road trip by yourself. My favorite post-rock album by a mile.

Ulver's Bergatt - A unusual combination of Norwegian black metal and folk music. If you can get past the foreign language then you will enjoy it.

Ophaned Land's Mabool - Progressive metal mixed with female vocalists, middle eastern instruments like the Oud, with vocals sung in English, Hebrew, Arabic, Yemenite and Latin, and songs that progress a story... You can't make this stuff up.

Overrated

Radiohead - While I thought that The Bends, Ok Computer and In Rainbows were good (not great) albums, I think they have earned far too many accolades. Kid A/Amnesiac are an impressive divergence from popular music, but compared to other progressive rock albums are fairly boring. And give me Jeff Buckley's Grace and Dredg's El Cielo over Ok Computer any day. And the thing that kills it for me is Thom Yorke's slurred, mostly unintelligble "singing."

Metallica - I really liked them, but once I delved more into metal I liked them a lot less. I found bands that had better lyrics, better vocalists, faster guitars, talented drummers, etc. Ditch Metallica, get into Nevermore and you won't regret it.

That is my say, but really anything that has a guitar in it is up for discussion from here on out.

Metallica's never been the most talented band...you can't really hate on them for it. They make easy-to-listen-to metal for the mainstream. I do wish they had a better drummer.

Can't disagree with Radiohead being overrated though. I never understood why they became so popular.

Nice chart by the way...I'm probably the same if I had to rank the genres.

Lars Ulrich is basically the only reason I can't listen to Metallica anymore. I'd love them otherwise. Such an untalented waste of a drummer's spot.

Favorite:

System of a down Toxicity is to this day the most influential Cd ive ever had the pleasure of listening to. System has been classified as Nu-metal as of late, but I still consider them to be metal. Their guitar is all very simple but Daron really makes it work, and the drumming is just out standing.

Metallica- I might agree with your statement, they may be a little overrated. However my first Cd was AJFA.... and Blackened took me and threw me into a path of music that ive stayed with since I can remeber. Master of Puppets was easily their best Cd, and although most people would rank Ride the Lightning next, I'd personally put kill'em all is above it. It dosent surprise me that they decided to try something different with the Black album which I feel is still a good rock CD, its just wasnt the Metallica many were accustomed to, and for many unfortunately, different automatically means bad. Their later stuff is crap, and I hate Lars.

Always a good listen:

Children of Bodom- Ive yet to hear alot of their new stuff but a friend assured me blood drunk was a good song. Living dead beat is my favorite song from these guys, and bodom beach terror offers some pretty creepy stuff towards the end of that song. Very dark history to these guys.

In Flames- Trigger. Most people are going to throw out Take this life from guitar hero or what not, but Trigger just gets my blood pumping everytime I hear it, and Dead end is just an amazing piece of music. Leeches is a short one, but short and sweet always works for me.

Between the Buried and Me- Its really too bad that the Rock band/ Guitar hero have shunned alot of great songs. My friend and I listen to their CD everytime we go for a long car ride. Its like one continous song that is just flat out amazing. Ill look at the track list one minute, and then next time i look up itll be four songs ahead and you couldnt even tell the difference. I remeber a friend commenting on Prequel to the Sequel, saying how 8 mins is too long for a song, too bad he wasnt aware its actually somewhere around 14 mins long.

Black Dahlia Murder- Nocturnal live by these guys is just amazing. With some of the riffs these guys come up with, its amazing that they get it to sound just as good on stage, a sign of a truly great band.

Metal core: Kind of become a hated genere and frowned upon, but there are some pretty good bands.

All that Remains- A friend of mine sent me a few of their songs, and what stood out the most for me was the drumming. They do a great job with the vocals as well.

A7X- I used to really really like these guys. Sounding the seventh Trumpet was a good start, and Waking the Fallen is still one of my fav CDs. City of Evil sadly didnt live up to expectations, and their new CD was better imo, but still this band has yet to live up to the standards of their sophmore effort, yet continue to flourish.

Bullet For my Valentine- Included them because they impressed me live, sound wayyyy to emo for me, but if they continue to work and make their work sound more like their new stuff their on a smart road.

Modern:

RATM- Morrello is one of the most creative guitarists ive ever seen, and the infusion with the whole rap/metal genre had never sounded better. Keep your fingers crossed they decide to put out a new CD which they keep denying :(

Overrated:

AC/DC- I just had to include them even tho this thread dosent really belong to them. I appreciate what they did for music, yet ive never understood why these guys get all the love they recieve. Vocals are horrible, and the guitar has never impressed me. Not really a reason why I hate them but selling their new Cd exclusively at Walmart really bothered me. I had to put this in here just to vent about how much I hate this band.

I play a Schecter c-1 hellraiser Fr, been playing for about a year now. I was originally a drummer, tried guitar, then went to Bassist, gave bassist to a friend so we could start a band and went back to studying guitar. I also dabble with Sax, and am hoping to get into the Musicions institute of LA in two-three years.

Dude...thats so naive of you to say. First off, the fact that music itself is incredibly subjective, and if he wants to listen to Rise Against, let him enjoy it. In fact, maybe if you didnt have such a closed mind and werent so easily influenced by others around you and the different images presented and associated with certain bands, you could open up your mind and try listening to some new music. Rise Against may not be a technically incredible band like some of the other bands that have been mentioned, but they produce good music with a good political message, and not to mention, they are all awesome guys. I met Tim McIlrath in a basement party a while back, and he was so chill and not at all like some of the prima donnas you see in the music industry nowadays. For you to sit here and say that his taste in music is narrow minded and ignorant. Wake up man.

I agree that last post was uncalled for, a **** move on my part. Im used to kids wearing hot topic clothes try and tell me good charolette and Panic at the disco are hard core, so I get a little defensive about stuff like that. And I actually tend to keep a very open mind with things, but when it comes to emo bands and the likes, I immediately get up in arms.

Going off what other people have said in this thread:
Tool is by far my favorite band. Everything that needs to be said about them already has been so I'll leave it at that. They just kick so much ass, hope to get a new album from them in like 3 years or so.

I'll also agree with everyone who feels Metallica is overrated. Their old stuff was just awesome but from the black album on, their sound changed and got more mainstream and as a result worse. 80s Metallica kicks ass, since then they're ok at best.

My other favorite bands:
Rage Against the Machine - Morello is just insane on guitar and I personally think De La Roca is a douchebag but he was a great fit in this band. Getting to see them reunited a couple years ago was probably the best concert I've ever been to.

Local H - Underrated, not as heavy as other bands in here, but they have some awesome stuff. Hit up youtube and listen to High-Fiving MF, Bound for the Floor, User, Bag of Hammers, and many others if you havent heard of them. Have a lot of albums and tour all over still, great live band as well.

Queens of the Stone Age - Just another great band. Josh Homme is an absolute beast and I love all their stuff. All of the old Kyuss stuff is sweet too.

Toadies - maybe more alternative than hard rock but they got some good stuff. Love listening to them when I'm relaxing. Everyone knows Possum Kingdom but Backslider is my personal favorite. Another great live band btw.

Jimmie's Chicken Shack - similar to Toadies, not the heaviest but I love just sitting around listening to them. High, Milk (opening line kills me every time i hear that song), and Dropping Anchor are great songs to check out if you havent heard of them.

old school Alice in Chains - my #2 favorite, just awesome, enough said.

and my guilty pleasure, Rammstein - I have no idea what they're saying but i love hitting up youtube and watching their kick-ass videos they always have. Considering I dont know what they're saying, it says how much I love how they sound.

RATM is by far my favorite band, but I'm not holding my breath over a new album. Their debut is probably my favorite album of all time, Evil Empire was pretty good, and then Battle of Los Angeles was just okay. Renegades was a bunch of covers. Their music has gotten progressively worse but their early content is still relevant which is one of the reasons why they won't be recording new **** any time. I just hope they come to Toronto soon and it better be as live as the youtuve videos I see of their concerts in the mid-90s.

There's more to the band than Morello though...Brad Wilk is a solid drummer, although you might get the impression that he's not because their hit songs are the weakest for drumming imo. Commerford has some awesome bass lines like Take the Power Back. De la Rocha is a huge douche but he's passionate and flows really well with the band. It's refreshing to see a rapper in a rock band who doesn't try to take over with lyrics....he likes repetitive verses and chants which works well.

If they did put out a new album, I'd hope for longer, more progressive songs with more shredding solos instead of the funky solos he's burnt out over the past couple albums. Pretty much a repeat of their self-titled debut would be nice.

I agree that Metallica sucks post 1990, but Death Magnetic is actually really good. Some will find it cheesy because they pretty much tried to copy their old formula, but it works for the most part. The fact that they're still putting out 8-9 minute epic thrash metal songs is pretty incredible.

Ulrich is more than just an overrated douche who tried to bring down Napster. He also pretty much runs the band...telling all the other members what to play, what to name the songs, etc. He's the ****** who thought it was a good idea not to have solos on St. Anger and tries to hold back the band from progressing all the time.

I like the sound....they wanted the album to sound as loud as possible so that's how the drums turn out. AJFA had a similar sound.

If you wanna hear the songs without the audio "problems" go watch some youtube videos of the songs in Guitar Hero 3. They don't have the tuning oddity.

As for Death Magnetic: at first I liked it, because it wasn't like St Anger and was more in line with their 80s material. But they basically became a caricature of what they used to be like. The whole thing seem uninspired, especially Kirk Hammett's solos. Seriously, that guy really never learned any new tricks. In the 80s it was cool, but now the guitar skill of the even average Metal bands has past him by.

Agalloch

Those are my two favorite bands in the world(Hell, my signature is Agalloch inspired), along with Neurosis. Awesome, awesome taste. I'm glad to see I'm not the only guy here who is into post-metal(or whatever) type stuff. Intronaut is really great as well. I've had problems getting into them though.

I'm an absolutely MASSIVE metal head, but I really don't know how to start off talking about music. I'll try the list thing.

Favorites

-Isis
I love this band. They play my favorite style of metal the best it can be played. Every single release they have brings something new and interesting to the table and it's always done with top quality musicianship. Been listening to them for going on four years now. Popped by postmetal/sludge cherry and I haven't looked back since.

-Hammers of Misfortune
San Fran guys who play a variety of metal that's pretty hard to pin down. Every single song by them is absolutely amazing. The guitar works can be hard to follow at times, not because of speed or anything cheap like that, but just because of how good it is and how well it mixes with the Hammond Organ they use in a lot of their work.

-Agalloch
Agalloch sounds like a walk through the woods on a grey day. Very folky, very heavy at times, and just overall a great great band.

-Maudlin of the Well
Boston band that released three albums before selling their souls to musical wankery and becoming Kayo Dot. All of the albums are amazing. Progressive arty metal with death metal vocals at it's best. The soundscapes they create are relaxing as they are harsh.

-Neurosis
The Eye of Every Storm might just be the best album I've ever heard. Through Silver in Blood is absolutely incredible as well. Another band that just brings it every single release. Nothing is boring or feels the same. They're never content with their sound. Kind of a band thing sometimes, but their music is absolutely amazing. The atmosphere to each song really stands out. I love the vocals as well.

-Wolves in the Throne Room
Pretty much the only good current USBM band. Draws a lot of lofty comparisons to Weakling because of where they're from, but they're a much different band. A lot of post rock elements are incorporated in their latest release, but it sounds really great, unlike most black metal bands that have tried things like that. Best black metal band out there right now.

Don't really feel like typing more.

Oh, and speaking of Weakling, the first three minutes of this song might be the most beautiful piece of music ever. JxZU-vRbvcg

King Crimson is WAY legit. They're in that realm of super influential but never talked about. Kinda like Zao, At The Gates, and Social Distortion.
Mastodon is something Fenikz would talk about. Well, because Fenikz is awesome, and so is Mastadon. Leviathan was awesome.

Oh yeah Mars Volta is lame because it broke up At the Drive-in

No. Cedric and Omar's dope problem broke up ATDI. One of my co-workers here has Guitar Hero:WT and i played it for the first time the other day and was shredding to one armed scissor. For the record, relationship of command is simply a mindbogglingly good album. L'Via L'Viaquez though is an absolutely destructive song. If you know which one that is (track three on the real version of frances the mute), you will know that it is the sexiest song in prog existence.

Criag Owens is trash to me because Chiodos is now the new the Used imho.

Craig Owens hits on everything with tits that moves. He is a creepy mother ******. I would also take his voice to Anthony Green and Dallas Green (no relation), just by the virtue that it's slightly more creepy and urgent. Chiodos is the new the Used. But the difference between chiodos and the used is that the used was never good. The similarities are there though that speaks to their congruence. Like both lead singers are major douchebags. They're both sellouts. They both suck now.

That being said. I still can't wait for the new coheed album with chris pennie playing drums. Best thing that could have happened to them. if you don't know chris pennie. go listen to old dillenger escape plan.

The guitar isn't necessarily impressive by today's standards, but that's like saying an Rx3 isn't impressive next to an rx8. In its day's it was one of the most impressive racing platforms ever and revolutionized the way racing cars are defined...

Sure The ol' school boy doesn't compare to modern gods like Tom Morello, Dimebag Darrell, or Oslo but in his day he was amazing, he was one of the fist to do what he did.

They might not be "real" as in, religion haters, but they are a great band, especially live.

Favorite bands:

Slipknot: Of their four Albums there's probably only five or six songs I don't really care for. The band has its moments of greatness but recently hasn't gelled as a creative unit and for that reason All Hope Is Gone, might be referring to the band's longevity. A friend of mine interviewed Shawn Crahan before their world tour and his toughts echoed my own, the album wasn't cohesive and was too much in different directions. That said, excellent drummer, guitarists and vocals.

In Flames: Old In Flames>>>>>>>>>>> New In Flames, don't get me wrong Come Clarity isn't a bad album and neither is their latest offering, but Whoracle was a modern freakin' master piece. Seeing them in a month

KillSwitch Engage: Brilliant band

Soilwork: Probably the best band to come out of Sweden, their sound is unique and fits nicely in the genre, Older albums are great for those that love more thrash, newer albums fit more in with the new wave of american metal and more progressive sounds.

Reccomend: Wherever Thorns may Grow, Stabbing the Drama, Follow the Hollow, Departure Plan/

Lamb Of God: Probably the best pure Heavy Metal band out there right now, their music doesn't preach ********, the vocals are heavy yet compliment the music and their guitarists and drummers would probably be up in the upper echelon of talent, cohesion and writing right now. They are the push that makes the new wave of american metal move. Wrath comes out in under a month.

Tool did not "rip off" King Crimson. In fact they share very little in common, other than they both have long songs. Don't take my word for it:

I happen to be a Tool fan. The members of Tool have been generous enough to suggest that Crimson has been an influence on them. Adam Jones asked me if I could detect it in their music, and I said I couldn’t. I can detect more Tool influence in King Crimson, than I can hear King Crimson in Tool.

Recommended Songs: Mordecai, Selkies: The Endless Obsession, All Bodies, Sun of Nothing

Isis was a band I started listening to several years ago and they have gradually progressed into being of my favorite. The music is beautifully complex and they keep getting better with every album.
Recommended Songs: Wills Dissolve, Wrists of Kings, Not in Rivers but in Drops, Syndic Calls

Agalloch mixes folk tunes, thrash and progressive metal with dark, brooding vocals that mixes together amazingly well.
Recommended Songs: As Embers Dress The Sky, A Desolation Song, Not Unlike The Waves

Acid Bath can best be described I guess by calling it swamp metal. They blend so many styles together and were one of the bands that really got me into metal.

Intronaut is another band I got into around the time of Isis. Very complex, bass-driven progressive metal with a dual-vocal attack. Very groove laden and technical.

Meshuggah is another great import from Sweden. Some of the finest progressive metal out there and insanely brutal. One of my favorites.

Mastodon. Can't go wrong with progressive Southern metal, especially when they make a concept album around Moby Dick.
Recommended Songs: Seabeast, March of the Fire Ants, Sleeping Giant, This Mortal Coil

Glass Casket Brutal speed/grind metal that has two members of BTBAM in its ranks.
Recommended Songs: Pencil Lead Syringe, Post Traumatic Death

Every Time I Die Just a fun band to listen to and you can feel the energy and excitement. Not for everyone but a particularly fond band of mine.
Recommended Songs: Ebolarama, The New Black, Buffalo Gals, L'Astronaut

Clutch A fun, Southern, bluesy band that puts on a hell of a live show.
Recommended Songs: Spacegrass, Mr. Shiny Cadillacness, Texan Book of the Dead, Mice and Gods

The Ocean I just love this band. Progressive, technical, thoughtful, amazing.
Recommended Songs: Statherian, Stenian, Rhyacian

Will continue later...

I saw Isis open for Tool in 2006 at the Target Center. Good band.

Lateralus live was one of the highlights of my life. Especially the epic ending. Absolutely incredible. Vicarious also kicked ass.

what type of bands out there that are like AC/DC, not looking into the heavy metal stuff, just some rock.

Nickelback? lol idk....good luck finding a good "just some rock" band. I can't even distinguish one from another because they all sound the same.

Research into subgenres of rock and you'll find something you like.....guaranteed.

Wouldn't say they're like AC/DC but they are certainly a pretty straightforward rock band aside from their latest album really. I've been pimping them everywhere but here's a few of their songs:

Off the Record:

One of my favorite songs right now:

Textures - Awake
oSYNhfkNGco

That entire album by Textures is awesome. Do yourself and check out Silhouettes esp. if you dig bands like Meshuggah.

Also, I've just recently been listening to the band Bring Me The Horizon. Pretty cool stuff.

It's about damned time to mention this band since I haven't. Check out Gojira. Their album From Mars to Sirius is just flat out excellent. I saw them in Memphis and it was one of the most brutal pits I've ever been a part of. Here's two videos from FMTS:

Gojira - The Heaviest Matter of the Universe
h8L2bZVA2Jc

Gojira - To Sirius
k2rLuTJzaKQ

And here's one from their latest album

Gojira - Vacuity
WmUgDrdbDhQ

And here's one last band to check out. It's like Mastodon and Isis got together and had a baby and then Meshuggah and Neurosis got together and had a baby and those two babies got together and had sex. Complete awesomeness... Just get the ******* album.

The twin reverb is underrated in the sense that everyone and their grandmother seems to want a Mesa or a Marshall stack. I prefer Fender tones over those two personally.

I absolutely LOATHE EMGs but thats probably because I'm not into metal all that much. Sure, they are great for metal but they are pretty much limited to that. I like a more versatile PUP really.

I like MoP a lot, but AJFA is otherworldly epic classic to me. Blackened, One, AJFA are 3 of my favorite songs period. To Live is to Die is awesome prog metal. I love the beat on Harvester of Sorrow. There are 2 meh songs on AJFA but the awesomeness of the other ones make up for it.

The 1st 4 tracks on MoP are pretty awesome though.

Oh and I just realized you bolded Death Magnetic. I love that new album. The songs are long and fast and it's almost like the return of AJFA. I'd have it higher but Hammet's solos kind of suck and Hetfield's singing is annoying on 1/2 the album. The songs themselves are really enjoyable though.

Death Magnetic was a lot better than their albums post black. At least they tried to sound like Metallica in it. I will say I only like 2-3 of the songs and some of them are pretty bad.

Radio friendly singles is a bit of an overstatement. Did they go more commercial/soft? Yes, but I'd hardly call it radio friendly.

I don't see what's not to like about DM. It's metal and radio friendly. Hardcore Metallica fans probably despise everything past AJFA, which I understand, but you have to listen with an open mind. I agree with what Butch said, except I like 5-6 songs a lot, not 2-3.

I have really disliked Metallica for a very long time but when I saw them at Bonnaroo they were fantastic. I didn't even want to go see them at all until I could hear that they were playing older stuff. They were really top notch and seemed to be enjoying themselves. I don't like Death Magnetic very much but it is good to see them stop trying to be something that they are not. I wouldn't really go out of my way to see them again but they can still really bring it live even though James' voice is not what it once was.

EDIT: it was Creeping Death into For Whom the Bell Tolls and Ride the Lightning that got me to go see them at Roo.

I am really digging Bonnaroo's lineup this year compared to the last few years and I don't even consider myself a fan of Phish or Bruce.

The thing that makes the festival for me is staying there for four days camping out and stuff. The only thing I don't really like about Coachella is the fact that it ends at a certain time each night and there aren't real late night sets. Thats really the funnest part seeing bands around the clock. NIN and TMV will be sick if they are both late nights.

Lol Dave Mustaine isnt that much of a d-bag. I mean I don't hold it against him that he was basically removed from Metallica and spent the rest of his career trying to do Metallica, but better. Sure hes a bit bitter but I can think of bigger a-holes.

Can you post a link to some sort of example? I might be able to figure it out.

Probably because Shiver doesn't like the way Mustaine sings? Who knows...

i'm also assuming it has to do with a pedal that beings with 'fuzz' group of distortion... like a big muff... or sovtek muff pi, or anything with a tube in it.

what amp are you using Shiv?

I actually am not into a lot of music like this. but BTBAM is just on another level. If you fast forward about half way through the song....to day 2 it is pretty impressive...and you don't have to deal with the hard screaming at the beginning.

I have a Peavey Valveking 112. I think I need to pimp it out though, the stock speakers aren't that great. But it's the best budget tube amp I could find.

Oh, I love Mustaine as a player. But come on, he is pretty much just a douchebag. There isn't a band, or anyone for that matter, that he hasn't gotten into a feud with.

They're very different bands in a lot of ways, and Lamb of God are a better band in many ways.

Sure there's a few songs I'd remove from their works and overall the group would be better for it, but they're probably the forerunners in the New Wave Movement.

On the subject of a bit lesser known but still quality bands. One of my favorite metal bands here. Unfortunately they broke up about a year ago, but their previous works were quite tasty. The other band is a bit newer, but they have a totally different sound than the majority of newer bands. Both are French Canadian if Im not mistaken.

Their coming to the UNO Lakefront Arena in New Orleans and I'm passing. Disturbed almost made me throw up in my mouth the last time I saw them. Bury Your Dead is pretty much rubbish live. Spineshank put on a good show about 8 years ago. I'd like to hear Chimaira and KSE but I hate the crowd that those bands attract.
