View Full Version : The Chances Seattle Goes QB at #4

I don't think it's likely.
You NEVER say never when it comes to the draft, but based on what I've read and seen since the conclusion of a dreadful season, I doubt they use the #4 pick on a QB.
Mora had a press conference today and emphasized that there would be no re-building and no re-loading. He and GM Tim Ruskell have made it clear that Hasselbeck is the starting QB and that the goal is to win the Super Bowl- not re-construct the team.
You can't completely rule anything out but I don't think Ruskell, whose seat is getting hotter, would pass on an immediate contributor for a young QB.

Then if I were a Seahawks fan, I'd be completely terrified.

I seriously doubt they'll go with a QB at #4. I see them going with Michael Crabtree or maybe an offensive lineman. They might even trade down and go with Malcolm Jenkins or Vontae Davis but a QB is unlikely although we seem to get surprises every year on draft day.

I'll pretty much echo what everyone else is saying. They're still committed to the Hasselbeck/Walter Jones era, and while I might be in the minority, I don't think it's that bad an idea. I think they have enough talent on that team to compete in the west. As for the pick, I think Mays would have been the guy after the combine/pro day and everything, but now I'll say Crabtree or Jenkins, with a slight lean toward Jenkins. And they definitely need to bring in another RB as well.

I'd take what people say with a grain of salt at this stage. That said, I don't expect QB at this moment. Part of it will also depend on who is there, but I think, if Crabtree is there, he's too good of a fit for them to pass up on. That said, I would expect a QB in the first 3 rounds.
Part of me thinks that, if Stafford is there, they'll ponder it. Not sure about Bradford, though. Just some gut guessing.
_________________________________
The reason I think they should ponder grabbing a QB is simple - it isn't about rebuilding as much as it is about the opportunity. Who knows if they'll get a chance to draft a top QB in the next couple of years, and more importantly, for that to happen, they'd need to bottom out again. More importantly, bringing a guy in now sets him on a solid timeline of apprenticeship under Hasselbeck.

I dont know about Crabtree guys, yes it makes since, but for a guy like Ruskell? Branch looked good towards the end, they got guys coming back for injury. I dont see them gurantee a WR that much. I think they would love to trade down and get a RB, I think that is #1 for them. Jenkins I think is the smartest decision for them. Trufant had a bad year after big money and nobody has stepped up for #2 slot. OT might be the safest choice though

If they are still running a WCO I'd rather have Bradford personally, but yeah with the money tied in to Hass no way they spend another 50+ mil on a QB as long as Hass is still there. Seneca Wallace actually proved he's more than a cruddy backup, he showed some legit QB skills this past season.

I think they have to go crabtree he can spark the offense once he gets there IMO

I think they also have to look possibly LT as an eventual replacement for Walter Jones. Maybe Eugene Monroe.

I wouldn't believe what any GM or HC says at this stage. Seattle is sitting at #4 with 2 teams drafting ahead of them and won't say anything that would give away their plans. In fact, they might just say the opposite of what they intend to do.
It all depends of course on who Detroit takes and whether or not Bradford and/or Sanchez declare.
If they have either Bradford or Sanchez as top 5 picks on their board and if one of them reaches their pick, they will take him IMO. Hasselback is near the end and may not even be healthy next season. His back could go out again at anytime. They can use rounds 2-7 to retool for a run if Hasselbeck is healthy. None of the junior QB's are going to play anyways next year IMO. They will all sit and learn for a season but starting in the 2010 season, Seattle will be ready to remain a top NFL team.
GM's and HC's are usually safe for 3 years with a rookie QB so they won't be under any pressure to pass on one.

I think the repsonses are all spot on here.I think Seattle, whether right or wrong, feel this year was a bit of an aberation and can quickly get back to competing for the division title.
As for the pick i agree with the Crabtree supporters and the backup choice would probably be
Andre Smith, who they could play at other spots on the OL while Walter Jones winds down his career.
My choice would be to grab a QB if the right one is there.

While I don't think Seattle goes QB at #4, I do see them picking up a QB if they see one they like in the 2nd or 3rd.

no way.
not unless they can trade away Matt then they wont select a QB in the 1st round. maybe 2nd or 3rd though, i could see them drafting a development qb to learn under Matt

They're nuts if they don't draft O-line.

Definitely Stafford, Mora has said he will adjust his system to the players so talk of a WCO type like Bradford doesnt interest me. I doubt Stafford falls to 4 but if he does it may be too tempting to pass up. I know they need help in other areas but if this guy is the next John Elway you cant pass that up.

I don't understand this fascination with the offensive side of the ball for the Seahawks. I think that it is much more likely that they take Malcolm Jenkins than any offensive player.
As for taking a QB that won't happen at 4. Mora said yesterday in his news conference that they were going to give Matt a chance to play out his last days in Seattle. That doesn't bode well for the QB pick scenario's.
As passionate as Mora was yesterday when talking about the defense, he is going to fix that side of the ball. What better way than to end up having two shut down corner's (one future)starting opposite each other in Trufant and Jenkins.

First off i think that's too high for Jenkins and i think they have too much money invested in the defensive side of the ball to be targeting that area. If you look how the players are ranked 1-4 it probably makes sense to target Crabtree, just my take.

Bradford or Sanchez won't play next season anyways. As junior QB's, they will have to sit for a year so Hasselback will be the starter next year anyways. It is still the smart move if they have either QB ranked in the top 5 and he is still there when they draft.
Ask yourself, what happens if Hasselback's back acts up again and his career is basically over., No decent QB = last place for a long time until they find a replacement and when you draft a QB, it can take 3 years for him to reach his potential. Better to act now and avoid a disaster if Hasselback has a complete meltdown.
I think drafting a solid prospect at QB makes perfect sense to me. It will keep Seattle as a contender for another decade with potentially a far better QB than Hasselback.

Bradford appears to be going back. Stafford would be the guy i want but i could live with Sanchez. What we think and what the brass think at Seahawks headquarters is probably two differant things.

Jenkins might be the most ready prospect in the entire draft and battling Curry for top defensive player. There are not mayne players with his size/speed/moxy that can walk the walk. Even Calvin Johnson needed a year of adjustment, and he came from a more ready offense than Crabtree

Not a huge Jenkins fan i guess, i actually like him more as a safety. As for Crabtree being ready or not i think you have to look beyond what immediate impact a guy can make and draft talent.

Here's how I see it, now that Bradford is going back, Sanchez is probably going to come out this year. Stafford is going to go number 1 to Detroit. The only player on the offensive side that they should take at 4 is an OT. That said, they will likely trade down and try to accumulate more picks.
Also, I don't understand how 4 is too high for Jenkins when he could just as easily go number 5 or 6 to Cleveland and Cincinatti, who would probably be happy to take a local kid who is such an elite prospect.
Jenkins is a perfect fit for the Seahawks. The only other player that they should consider on defense (assuming Leroy Hill is resigned *crosses fingers*) would be Brian Orakpo, since I don't think that Lawrence Jackson will ever be able to get to the QB effectively. It is too early to give up on Jackson however, and there are no safeties worthy of the pick now that Mays is going back to college. Jennings has not improved in the three years he has been in the league. Josh Wilson has, but he is too short to go up against a lot of WR's. We need someone opposite of Tru who can shut down the opposing WR's. Jenkins is the perfect pick, and rookie CB's generally make more impact than rookie WR's. There's a reason why the "third-year rule" applies to so many WR's.
Now, if someone could manage to convince me that Michael Crabtree is the next Larry Fitzgerald, I'd be happy to take him. Until then I will not agree with any mock that gives him to the Seahawks. That's how I feel about him.

The only problem with OT is the Seahawks would be paying a huge amount of money to a LT that wouldn't play at tackle for at least a couple season with Walter and Locklear in place with Willis emerging as a good player on the line.
At this point it's all Crabtree.

They wont take a QB because they want to win now with the players they got. Plus, Hasselbeck was injured most of the season and they played it safe wth him, so he should be fresh for next season. I think they go with Andre Smith if he's available. Maybe plug him in at RT for now, or maybe even a guard position until Walter Jones decides to hang it up. I don't think they will go with Crabtree because after his combine, picking him at #4 is not good. They could trade down but if Andre Smith is there they take him. If not, the best available player, which would be Curry most likely.

Which would be a waste of a pick even if Hill is gone considering the other needs. I love Curry, but he's just not needed in Seattle.

I would love to land Curry, and he would probably make a huge impact right away, but the problem is that it is probably cheaper to resign Leroy Hill than to spend the type of money a Top 5 pick is going to cost at the position.
