OK, so basically with my work I have a week trip coming up to Baltimore, but I am looking to stay on an extra week and head to New York with a friend of mine. What's the easiest way to get from Baltimore to New York (I hear good things about a train but I don't know the prices...) and then anyone know any reasonably cheap hotels in New York as well?
Thanks very much in advance folks

If you think the train is too pricy try the bus it kind of sucks but its the cheapest mode of transport. It costs 37.00 one way and you get there in
3.5 - 4.5 hours.

Well I'd say find a hotel outside of the city NYC is the most expensive city next to london.

You can ride Amtrak from Baltimore to NYC in 2 hours 45 minutes for $64 USD plus tax. You could drive Interstate 95 straight to NYC, but you have to go through Philly and Trenton, NJ, as well as fight the NYC traffic. A train would probably be less hassle. Check priceline.com or orbitz.com for hotel pricing info.

If you're in Baltimore I'd go down to DC for at least a day. It's only about 35-40 minutes away and as long as you hug the western part of DC it's really a nice place.

There is really nothing to see or do in Baltimore other than a quick trip to the Inner Harbor.

bus is cheapest, but train isnt terrible even if the pound is taking a massive hit. For hotels, my advice is dont stay in Manhattan. Try and find something around Queens or something for cheap......I know there a cheap places around my area of Queens and you can get to midtown Manhattan in like 30 minutes.

From Baltimore you wouldnt have to go through Philly at all and by going through Trenton you're really giving him the wrong idea. You take 2, maybe three roads from Baltimore to NY. Hop on 95 to 295 to the NJ Turnpike and youll be in NY in about 3 hours depending on the driver. Its not a bad drive at all.

When on the train don't look anyone in the eye and if you're with a lady friend watch out for her because NYC does alot of underground trafficking. Don't go anywhere near times square, its like Hostel. Always carry a knife with you because the ninjas at the statue of liberty will get you if you aren't careful. Tidy up on your latin too, its like the second most spoke language in Baltimore.

You should watch the Warriors before you travel to New York. it's still 100% factual to this day. The Baseball Furies will beat you to death if you aren't careful

I thought with him being so connected with the US atleast through the internet he would have seen the news stories on them by now. But yes, watch out for them but if you encounter them all they want is your watch. If it isn't digital, they will kill you. They can't tell time.

If you head down to DC, you can go on the Boltbus (www.boltbus.com) to NY for like $25 total. You get on the bus by Metro Center (downtown, safe area, right off the metro), then you get let off right at Penn Station. I would try to head down to DC for a day or 2, see the sights and sites, then hit the Bolt to NY.

Lets hope it's not this weekend lol. Inauguration is going to be crazy. So many major roads closed, millions of people. I have to go to work just to change security tapes on Tuesday and I talked to local DC police man and he said my regular 40 minute trip from where I live to where I work should be a minimum 5 hours at least with the streets I have to go through to get around.

Don't trust the times the companies tell you for trains and buses. Trains must give way to cargo trains and that can double or even triple your trip time. Buses have to stop at every one of their stations so it could take about an hour longer than listed.

Meh I take the bus alot and I've only had a major delay (more than 1 hour) once or twice.

Agreed. I'm telecommuting Tuesday because I don't even want to deal with it.

Stay in New Jersey UK! I stay in Weehawken when I got to NYC, it'll be still easy for you to get too, much cheaper, and you just take a quick boatride to NYC.

NJ is not a bad option either......I just prefer taking the subway into Manhattan.

Greyhound is the way to go if you don't have a car. If you're coming to NY, I think your best bet is to stay by one of the airports (assuming your going back through JFK). Lot of relatively cheap chain hotels. It's really easy to navigate the Subway System, from JFK take the westbound E train and It'll drop you in Midtown. If you need any help with that, feel free to let me know
My experiences in Baltimore have only been at Camden Yards so I can't really help you there but both times I stayed at the Inner Harbor Renaissance Hotel, which was really nice.

Yeah but I equate PATH with the LIRR and I despise both of them....its expensive compared to the subway as well (I think)

Stay Corona Queens, It's a wonderful place. I was even invited to a block party when I was there.
I think you should consider Boston too. It is a better place to visit than NYC. I actually don't like the city itself too much. My favorite part of NY was up state by far, Saratogo Springs. Cold spring was nice too.

Yeah LIC is mad ghetto, but you literally can see Manhattan so I suppose its not a bad choice. Just make sure its a chain hotel, an independent could be bad news.

Long Island City has alot of cotton headed ninny muggins and the only way to defeat them is to feed them jolly ranchers. So many security hazards in the USA these days.
