I've said it for years, Herm Edwards is a good football coach. Most people can't see past wins and losses but there is more to it than that. He is a great talent evaluator, he is a great motivator, his players play hard for him every down because they buy into his philosophy. We were more competitive this year than many people predicted. At the end of the day though, all most people care about is wins.
Like I said, I don't like this move but I can fully understand why it happened. Oh well. Now I can hope that Cowher is our next coach! Go longshots!

Looks like LJ is getting shopped since he doesnt have that special bond with his african american coach anymore. Unless they hire one..
Haley is not soft spoken at all and I think he will put some fire into that team.
I'm thinking the next coach will be Haley or someone from Parcell's staff in Miami.

Anyone know if they interviewed a minority candidate before Shanahan?
If not....I think this is a dumb route to take. I would have at least given Romeo an interview to comply with the Rooney rule and because of his past connection with Pioli and the Pats.
Who knows, it could even turn into him being a defensive coordinator.
But I think it's silly to go hard, hardcore after 1 coach and let that be publicly known because your going to struggle to get a minority candidate in to interview if he knows its a sham.

We really have no idea who they have interviewed. No one seems to have any reliable sources inside the KC organization other than maybe Mort who broke Herm being fired.
Schefter is still saying Shanny isn't a candidate, but he's been wrong at every point about the Chiefs. He thought we wouldn't get Pioli, he thought we would keep Herm.

MORT AND SCHEFTER DUEL OVER REPORTS OF SHANAHAN TO CHIEFS (http://www.profootballtalk.com/2009/01/23/mort-and-schefter-duel-over-reports-of-shanahan-to-chiefs/)
Posted by Mike Florio on January 23, 2009, 5:48 p.m.
Two of the top NFL (http://www.profootballtalk.com/category/rumor-mill/#) information men in the business are engaged in a duel regarding the question of whether the Kansas City Chiefs are talking to former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan regarding the possibility of replacing former Chiefs coach Herm Edwards.
Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the Chiefs and Shanahan are closing in on a deal.
Adam Schefter of NFL Network reported on Thursday, and has reiterated today, that the Chiefs have made no contact with Shanahan.
“[u]nless people I have known for years are blatantly lying to me, Shanahan is not going to be the next head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs,” Schefter writes. “It is not happening. People can keep talking as if it is. But it is not. He will not be the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs in 2009.”

Schefter's going to get embrassed...
I believe Schefter for the time being, especially over anyone from ESPN. He's better, plus he's tight like a glove with the Broncos and Shanny given that he used to be their beat reporter a few years ago.

If Shanny does go to KC, my question is does he view Mark Sanchez as a franchise QB? And if not, would he give up a 2nd round pick or a future 1st for Stafford?
We all know he loves big-armed and big-time QBs and probably won't want to go into camp with Tyler Thigpen or a veteran stopgap.

If he is hired as HC I would assume that we'd take Stafford or Sanchez, whichever is available there at 3. Pioli does like to move around on draft day so I could see a trade-up to 1st scenario if they are that high on Stafford, but they'd have to view him as the far superior prospect in order for that to happen I'd think.

Cowher is who I really want here.
And for the Shanahan thing, I don't really WANT him here but he used to be a semi decent coach, right? He wouldn't be my first choice but he's got history in this league so maybe that's why they're wanting him here, idk.
I thought he was a half decent coach but a horrible talent evaluator. If that were the case, Pioli can take care of that stuff and Shanny can take care of the coaching.
Bill Cowher isn't going to happen.

eazyb81
01-23-2009, 09:01 PM
he's the primary reason our defense went downhill. and i don't just mean through personnel moves. he was the one who had larry coyer quit the blitz packages that coyer ran that made our defense one of the best in the league.
further, if the scripted plays at the beginning failed (or even succeeded), the remainder of the playcalling had become completely stale and predictable over the last few seasons.
did he do an incredible job getting jake plummer to lead a team to the AFCC? absolutely. has he done a piss poor job with the team, offense and defense (on the field) since? absolutely.
that said, i think shanny can still be a good head coach. but i don't think that'll happen next year. i strongly believe he needs some time away from the game, before he can come back and coach like he did in the 90's.
Personally, I think you're thinking too much about what happened the past year or two, and letting that take precedence in your evaluation of him. It's just like how most Chiefs fans still mock Marty Schottenheimer; there are too many biases in the way to make a clear evaluation.
If you asked non-Denver fans what they thought about Shanny, I'm sure he would receive a resoundingly positive review.
Yes, he sucked ass with the defense recently, but he's also been a genius with the offense his entire tenure in Denver. Hopefully, Pioli's presence will enable Shanny to focus on what he does best, instead of trying to control everything.
All this being said, I'm highly doubtful that he even ends up with KC.

Jon Gruden is who I would pick
The most important thing is who does Scott Pioli pick, because those two have to have the same vision of the team they are building. The President/GM knows what players that the Head Coach and his staff look for, and those coaches prepare the players best they can so that they can succeed on gamedays.
It's not like fantasy football, you can't just pick and choose.
