Per ESPN, the Patriots have hired Floyd Reese as a special adviser. I'm really excited to bring in someone like him to help out now that Pioli is gone - this guy drafted McNair, George, Kearse...the list goes on. I really like him.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots hired former Tennessee Titans general manager Floyd Reese as their senior football adviser on Tuesday after losing vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli to Kansas City as general manager.

Nick Caserio, the director of player personnel, will manage the personnel department's daily operations, while Reese will handle contracts and other duties.

"It's as thrilling as it can get," Reese said. "The opportunities most of the time are in areas or with teams that are broken, unable to win, don't have quarterbacks, don't have backing, maybe have issues with stadiums or facilities, fan support, whatever it may be. This opportunity is so at the opposite end of the spectrum from all of that.

"None of those things are broken. They're all in very good shape. It's going to be my role to come in and help however I can," he said.

Reese has spent 32 years in player personnel and coaching in the NFL and served from 1994 to 2006 as general manager of the Houston Oilers and then the Titans when the Oilers moved to Tennessee. He spent the last two years as an ESPN analyst.

I suppose. Pac-Man's problems were never on the field, though, he drafted him expecting a top cornerback and got one, he just didn't stay out of trouble. I haven't given up on Vince Young yet, either.

Yeah but that's part of the equation and they should've known how stupid Pacman was after an interview or two.

Me neither. It's just not looking too good at this point. Especially considering we could have had Cutler.

The jury is still out on VY. Who couldve predicted he'd have these mental problems? I still think he could be a really good player. He's already made the Pro Bowl BTW.

Same with Pac Man. He wasnt THAT much of a headcase in college. Nobody expected this crap from him. The money really got to him.

Belichick will still be overlooking the draft so I'm confident theyll be okay. Reese taking care of the b-work (contracts, stipulations, extensions)

Don't mind it. Decent hire I guess. Shouldn't really hurt the personal decisions.

I've never heard any real confirmation, but the rumors have VY being part of the falling out between Reese & the Titans. Specifically b/c Reese wanted Cutler, not VY.

Even with some misses on his resume (find me a team that's flawless!) Reese was a big factor in the success of Tennessee. I like him. The write up in the Patriots.com article puts a very nice argument forward for Floyd:

"Reese's positive impact is still being felt in Tennessee. The 2008 Titans earned the AFC's top playoff seed while 16 of 22 starters on their final 2008 roster were originally acquired while Reese was general manager, including nine of 11 starters on defense. The 2008 Titans are sending six of Reese's acquisitions to this year's Pro Bowl - QB Kerry Collins, CB Cortland Finnegan, DT Albert Haynesworth, S Chris Hope, C Kevin Mawae and T Michael Roos."
