Hey, gang. I've spent a fair bit of time on this one, I hope you'll be interested. There are a few surprise picks in there. Here we go!
ROUND ONE
1. Detroit Lions– Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia
A franchise QB for a team with nothing close to it. OT will be tempting but there should be enough depth for them to pick up those pieces a little later on. Stafford will be the face of an ailing franchise, with all the physical and mental tools for greatness that one could want.
2. St. Louis Rams– Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest
Hear me out, Ram nation. I’m a huge fan of Eugene Monroe and I’m acting entirely on a hunch. There are two ways I see the first two rounds playing out in St. Louis. 1) The Rams select Monroe and pray to God they have a shot at Alex Mack. 2) The Rams select Curry and pray to God they have a shot at William Beatty or Eben Britton. I think the latter scenario is more likely. Having addressed the front four with first round picks the last two seasons, it makes sense to select the best available defender in hope that he thrives. Curry is versatile enough to play inside and outside. He really has the ideal height and speed to do either. Spagnuolo could get a real rise from rotating Witherspoon and Curry between WILL and Mike.
3. Kansas City Chiefs– Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas
After trading away Jared Allen, the Chiefs really struggled to generate a pass rush last season. I’m expecting Orakpo’s stock to soar after workouts, making him more than an apt target value wise. I loved everything I saw of Tyler Thigpen last season, but it remains to be seen what the new Chiefs regime will hold, making Mark Sanchez the likely alternate.
4. Seattle Seahawks– Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia
Walter Jones, though one of the greatest OT’s to play in the last decade, is now slowing. He, like St. Louis’ Orlando Pace, may find himself without a job when all is said and done this offseason. He does not purport to be a good fit for Seattle’s new zone blocking system, whereas Virginia’s Eugene Monroe, arguably the most rounded OT in this class, certainly does. This is an investment in future continuity, and, if you ask me, a very wise one at that.
5. Cleveland Browns– Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio St.
To me, this comes down to Jenkins and Florida St.’s Everette Brown and I don’t think Cleveland can go wrong with either. The Brown’s secondary was constantly burned last season and Jenkins is far and away the best defensive back in this class and already a legitimate Top-10 selection.
6. Cincinnati Bengals– Jason Smith, OT, Baylor
The Bengals greatest area of concern is certainly the OL. Jason Smith is a close second to Monroe at the moment in my books among the ‘Big 4’ OT’s in this class, and may even leapfrog him with a stellar workout. He plugs in as an immediate starter along what was a porous offensive line in 2008.
7. Oakland Raiders– Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
Hello, Al Davis.
8. Jacksonville Jaguars– Andre Smith, OT, Alabama
After trading basically an entire draft last year for Derrick Harvey, the Jags somehow find themselves back toward the bottom of the pile. David Garrard seemingly could not stay upright this season and it was ultimately detrimental to the team’s chances of success. Incumbent Kahlliff Barnes is likely on his way out and Smith, despite some concerns as to his motivation and character, looks to more than adequately fill his shoes.
9. Green Bay Packers– Everette Brown, DE, Florida St.
The Packers are in dire need of help at OT, but I don’t think they bite on Ole Miss’ Michael Oher due to concerns about his work ethic. On a young team, players with questionable motivation will be avoided by coaches. Brown looks to develop into a real sack artist opposite Aaron Kampman, though he may end up a better fit at OLB in a 3-4 scheme.
10. San Francisco 49ers–Mark Sanchez, QB, Southern California
Don’t shoot me, this is just the way I see it. Mike Singletary wants to run a power offense, meaning Sanchez won’t have to make an immediate impact behind Frank Gore and that running game. B.J. Raji is also a consideration, but I think the 9er’s lack of anything to speak of at the QB position will really force their hand. Their hands will be forced, however, on a very good QB prospect with good athleticism and the ability to make all the throws.
11. Buffalo Bills– Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn St
The Bills need a pass rush and Maybin figures to be the best man for the job. I don’t buy Brandon Pettigrew as a top 15 pick because he really isn’t a receiver worth throwing that kind of money at, and I did consider Jeremy Maclin at WR, but Maybin’s great combination of strength and speed wins out in the end.
12. Denver Broncos– B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College
This really was an easy pick. The Broncos have very little in the middle of their D-Line and have been at the bottom of the league against the run for many years consecutively. NT prospect Raji, who had a great Senior Bowl, should look to change all that. Raji’s ability to tie up blocks and push linemen backward on the inside should allow ’07 1st rounder Jarvis Moss to come into his own as a 3-4 pass rush specialist.
13. Washington Redskins– Michael Oher, OT, Mississippi
Oher’s motivational issues will be overlooked here simply because of the vast amount of talent he possesses. Switched on and ready to go, Oher is probably the most dominant OT in this class, but it just doesn’t happen a whole lot of the time. The Redskins, with needs all along the OL, will try to harness that potential and give Clinton Portis some real rushing lanes.
14. New Orleans Saints– James Laurinitis, ILB, Ohio St.
Admittedly, this is a bit of a reach in considering Laurinitis’ stock at this point in time. But the Saints have been searching desperately for a starter at MLB and Laurinitis, the 2007 Butkis award winner, is the kind of prototypical ‘backer they will so desire. Undersized Jon Vilma is off contract and though Corner was considered, I can just see New Orleans falling in love with a big-time football player.
15. Houston Texans– Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU
The Texans will look to address their pass rush opposite Mario Williams, which has been non existent the past season. Jackson is a very athletic DE with the ability to occupy blockers on the other side—meaning Amobi Okoye and Williams will not face as many double teams. If Taylor Mays had come out and was still available, he would have been strongly considered. As it stands, I don’t think William Moore is a top 15 pick quite yet.
16. San Diego Chargers–Rey Maualuga, ILB, Southern California
This is a staple pick in the middle of many mock drafts, now including my own. Maualuga purports to be an ideal fit behind the Chargers DL, hopefully doing to opposing running backs what Shawne Merriman does to QB’s. He will benefit from the guidance of DC Ron Rivera, a linebacker specialist.
B]17. New York Jets–Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri
Maclin really falls a bit in this mock, but the Jets stop that run at pick 17. Maclin is a real dynamo to fill the shoes of Laverneus Coles and also excels in the return game. As there is no other QB worth this selection, this was ultimately a BPA pick with credence given to the fact that Maclin also looks to make the biggest immediate impact.
]18. Chicago Bears– Darius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland
More than anything else last season, Kyle Orton looked like he needed somebody to play with. Heyward-Bey is quite the physical specimen and will give Orton a mid range target to compliment speedster-come-superstar Devin Hester and short-field man Greg Olsen. Matt Forte was also a revelation as a rookie, meaning the Bears skill-position players for at least the next few seasons should be set in stone.
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers– Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina
Nicks will be billed as a compliment to Antonio Bryant in a bid to make the transition easier for whatever QB ends up starting in Tampa. There are, of course, none worth consideration just yet, so it makes sense to build a nucleus of skill position players around what is already a very solid OL.
20. Detroit Lions (Dallas)– Eben Britton, OT, Arizona
Lions fans, think Atlanta of 2008. This is the safest means to ensure your new $60 Million investment is protected. Britton is a slight reach here, but so was Sam Baker. It’s sheerly a case of doing what you have to in order to protect what is now your franchise’s greatest asset.
21. Philadelphia Eagles– TE Brandon Pettigrew, Oklahoma State
I was strongly considering a Runningback here, with Chris Wells being a talent almost too good to pass up, but Pettigrew wins out on the basis of his ability as a blocker and a developmental receiver. The Eagles had a myriad of tight ends step in toward the end of the season, but none of them have done quite the job they were expected to. Case in point: L.J. Smith.
22. Minnesota Vikings– Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois
The Vikings need a corner and Davis is the best remaining of a deep bunch. He has great athleticism and good size for corner prospect, as one would expect from the brother of workout warrior Vernon Davis. On that note- expect teams to be wary of a surprisingly good combine.
23. New England Patriots– Chris Wells, RB, Ohio St.
The rich just got richer. The Patsies have needs at linebacker, but Wells is the ultimate luxury pick for an offense that will see Tom Brady return to the helm in 2009. Wells is the best player available and I think that kind of talent will be difficult to pass up.
24. Atlanta Falcons– Brian Cushing, OLB, USC
The Falcons have a need at linebacker and Cushing may end up being a more versatile pro than team-mate Rey Maualuga. Keith Brooking is not getting younger, and Cushing looks to be a very good WILL prospect.
25. Miami Dolphins– Clint Sintim, OLB, Virginia
The Dolphins need a linebacker with the versatility to play inside and out, and Clint Sintim fits the bill to perfection. His stock is on the up and he looks simply to be a very productive player who is always around the football. Those type of players never stray too low.
26. Baltimore Ravens– Percy Harvin, WR, Florida
Harvin is probably the most explosive player in this year’s draft class. He ands some sizzle to a lineup of possession receivers Mark Clayton and Derrick Mason and big backs Ray Rice and LeRon McLain. Harvin has played both as a back and a receiver at Florida, helping Tim Tebow to a second national championship. He really is the perfect compliment to the core of players the Ravens currently have, and a home-run threat for Joe Flacco.
27. Indianapolis Colts– Peria Jerry, DT, Mississippi
The Colts desperately need an under-tackle in the wake of Booger McFarlane and Jerry so happens to fall into their laps. With ideal size and good strength for a UT prospect, Jerry and the Colts are a match made in football heaven.
28. Philadelphia Eagles (Carolina)– William Moore, S, Missouri
Moore becomes the first Safety off the board at pick 28. The Eagles secondary is missing a piece next to Brian Dawkins that really hasn’t been well filled since before Michael Lewis. If they elect not to trade Lito Sheppard, Sheldon Brown may end up at SS, but I think Moore is the best pick here in terms of vale. The Eagles could make the Rams look mighty silly here by selecting William Beatty out of Connecticut.
29. New York Giants–Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers
We all saw what happened to the Giants in the playoffs without Plaxico Burress. With a great OL already in place, it only makes sense to go out and grab his replacement. Britt has good speed and is explosive off of the snap and at 6’4’’, he appears to be a Burress clone.
30. Tennessee Titans– D.J. Moore, CB, Vanderbilt
The Titans Achilles heel on defense last season was finding someone to start opposite Cortland Finnegan after it became clear that Nick Harper is better suited for the Nickel role. Moore is an excellent prospect who should be an immediate starter on an already strong defense.
31. Arizona Cardinals– Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia
A lack of a running game killed the Cardinals in many games during the regular season, and I’d be surprised if the Edgerrin James revival lasts very long at all. Moreno slips a little bit and the Bridesmaid Cardinals are thrilled to take him at pick 31.
32. Pittsburgh Steelers– Max Unger, OL, Oregon
Unger is versatile enough to play anywhere on the OL and could fill any number of positions along the Steelers’ line. Chris Kemoteau penalties almost cost the Steelers the Superbowl, and Unger may end up his replacement at guard. His best fit might be at Center, but he won’t play there as Justin Hartwig signed on after last season.
