This is just to affirm my believes that I'm not the only one!

Curling is a great sport, I'm going out for lead in the 2014 Olympics.

2010 Winter Olympics are now and Bonspiel is soon!

Why dont they throw it harder instead of sweep infront of it?

It would be more difficult to place the shot to where you're aiming it, if you threw it harder. Less control.

Que? They sweep in front of it to slow it down (also to aim).

curling basics, sweeping section says differently. They sweep infront to reduce friction (and to aim)

I always just assumed the opposite. I live in California. The closest I can get to curling is lawn bowling and they don't allow the use of lawn mowers (yet).

because the primary goal is to score points... to do that you have to land in the area. The secondary goal is to prevent the other team from scoring. To do this, you have to bounce the other team's rocks out of the area by transferring kinetic energy. If you are not able to transfer enough energy into the rock, or have too much to begin with, then your rock would not score points.

The sweeping not only allows them to aim, but it allows them to control the speed of the rock by applying a little, or a lot of sweeping, and the amount of control you have over the speed when sweeping is much greater than the amount of control you have over the speed when throwing.

It seems as if the thrower (don't know the actual name) tries to get the rock moving at basically the same speed every time, and the sweepers alter it from there.
