EMMITT EXITS ESPN
Posted by Mike Florio on February 20, 2009, 4:33 p.m. EST
Well, we’ll no longer have Emmitt Smith to kick around.

After a two-season run featuring multiple new on-air additions to the English language, the greatest running back in NFL history ultimately has fared no better than Joe Montana as a broadcaster.

Yes, ESPN has advised us that Emmitt’s relationship with the network has ended.

There will be no formal announcement — and presumably no going away party. Or vodka-fueled roast.

“We thank Emmitt for his contributions to ESPN and work ethic the past two years,” ESPN spokesman Bill Hofheimer told us via e-mail. “We wish him all the best.”

So we bid a bittersweet farewell to a guy who made this job a lot more entertaining. Intentionally or otherwise.

Greatest thing ESPN has ever done to gain more ratings..... Emmitt utterly was the worst nfl analyst in the history of broadcasting. Could Emmitt ever make sense when he spoke on tv?

so we no longer have to hear his abysmal raping of the english language?

I would laugh everytime he is on TV if that happens.

They'd have to hire Peter King as well, since he comes in a package with Favre.

noo, I will miss his multiple errors in every single broadcast.
here are some of my favorites...

"Tom Brady is buyin' time for his lineman."
"The NFC West is probably one of the weakest... CONFERENCES... in the whole NFC. These guys over here, you have the Cardinals, you have the 49ers, you have the Seahawks, and you also have the Rams..."
"Wes Worker is a possession receiver that make things happen."
"He was coming through line to make a move and got blind sided by Al Wi... Al Wi... Al Jackson."
"The leadership definitely have to come from the leaders."
"Not only does he have the NFC East record for touchdowns, but also the team record."
"Eli Manning has been given the rice of passage."

btw, I have a good collection of Smith quotes from another mock draft site.
...pm me if interested.
There's also some hilarious articles/mock drafts written as how Emmit Smith would write them.

I think they would need to make health care free in America for them to be able to do that.

Brown, Payton and Sanders are clearly the Top 3 of all-time in any order you want. Emmitt is in the 2nd tier with OJ, Sayers, Tomlinson, Dickerson, Faulk and Campbell.

Dickerson is very underrated maybe the most underrated RB ever.

1,808 yards 18 TD's as a rookie that is just insane.

If Dickerson had stayed with the Rams who knows what sort of numbers he would have posted. He had over 3,900 yds in his first two seasons. I don't think that will ever be done again.

his words were entertainment gold. dammit.

why do you guys care about what analysts say anyway? who cares. all they do is say obvious stuff that you already know, or they say very generic football talk that is irrelevant.

if youre gonna say something, at least make me laugh. Smith was money in the bank.

Bucs_Rule
02-21-2009, 06:36 PM
Smith was entertaining and funny. I'd rather listen to him than your standard ex-player that basically says the obvious.

"They have had a lot of success running the ball in the first half, we should see more in the second half."

"They haven't been able to stop the offense at all except when they blitzed. Look for more blitzing in the second half."

We don't need more of that. Instead hearing "They have had a lot of success running the ball in the first half, we should see none of that in the second half."

Now that is worth watching for.

Look at all the haters in this thread. The man has the most rushing yards by any one person in history.......But let's make sure that we don't put him in the top 3 backs in history.....Please

He by no means is gifted in the english language, but does that really matter to be a broadcaster? How many times do you sit and listen to guys that are "Speaking English" and think that that guy is an idiot and sounds stupider?

iowatreat54
02-21-2009, 07:01 PM
Because Payton, Sanders and Brown were all better running backs. Just because he has the most yards does not make him the best back.

I'm sure he will get some position where we can still enjoy his awesome speaking skills from time to time.
