ABC Nation News reports that one Lions player and two Raiders are on a boat in Clearwater, Florida that has gone missing.

The Coast Guard is searching for the 21-foot fishing boat, which is thought to be about 50 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. The players' names have not been disclosed. There were originally four people aboard. They were supposed to return at 1:30AM last night, but never came in. The Coast Guard believes the boat is in distress and waters in the gulf are "extremely choppy."

On March 1, 2009, the U.S. Coast Guard reported that a 21-foot fishing boat was missing in the Gulf Coast near Clearwater Pass, Florida. The boat was reportedly carrying 4 passengers, including Cooper, Detroit Lion Corey Smith and 2 others. The four men left Clearwater Pass on February 28 at 6:30 a.m. and were expected to return later that night. The Coast Guard began searching for the missing boat shortly after midnight on March 1, 2009. As of 12:42 p.m. local time on March 1, 2009 the boat had not been located.

Found that on wikipedia so who knows how accurate that is but geez I hope everyone is alright.

The first and only thing you mention on your first post was that you hope your only star player wasn't on that boat. You didn't say nothing about wishing for everyone's well being.

That is a real classless comment considering this situation. Then again I wouldn't know how to be classy either if my team was the Detroit LOLns.

It sounds like the reports are true. Corey Smith from the Lions and Marquis Cooper of the Raiders. No big names, but NFL players none the less. At this point if they haven't been found and haven't made contact with anyone about being missing, you can almost assume the worst. The coast guard has been looking for them for about 10 hours already....and they were supposed to return home at dark yesterday.

Yeah I thought of Hill from NE the minute I heard this story. Hopefully this doesnt get that bad but these boat travels are getting almost as bad as players going to clubs/getting in a gun altercation.

Per PFT

A source with knowledge of the tragic situation that has unfolded over the past two days in Florida tells us that the authorities have called off the search for a 21-foot fishing boat carrying two NFL players.

We’re told that the boat left from Seminole, not Clearwater, and followed the Intercoastal Waterway.

A search for debris was conducted from Sand Key, which is south of Clearwater, all the way to Anclote in Pasco County.

As it was explained to us, unless the men made it onto another vessel or managed to navigate 13-foot waves in that 21-foot boat, it’s not looking good.

This is not good news at all. Pray for the family's if you are religious.

well.

good news is. no SOS call has been made. you'd think if you were in some type of trouble, and you have a decent boat that you travel on to go fishing... you'd have a working distress beacon.

I think it's the best and worst news is that the boat hasn't been found.

Maybe they just ditched technology and forgot to check in, just trying to get away.

Maybe it capsized.

Why wouldnt everyone hold onto the boat? Its a lot easier for rescuers to see a boat and not to mention that its a lot less strain to stay afloat.

The one thing I can think of is that one or two couldnt reach the boat so the players went out to try and grab them but then got swept to sea as well.

I read somewhere, I think it was ESPN, that the guy who was rescued said that they were all in contact with the boat soon after it turned, so the most likely is that they got ripped away by a wave and couldn't get back. Combo of hypothermia, fatigue and vicious swell can make that sort of swim difficult even for good swimmers.

Wow, weird development. Apparently Nick has told reporters that Marquis Cooper, Corey Smith and Will Bleakley tried to swim to safety. Smith and Cooper took off their life jackets.

"We were told that Nick said the two NFL players took their life jackets off and drifted out to sea," said Bob Bleakley, whose son Will, 25, is also still missing.

Schuyler said that Will Bleakley, who stayed hanging on the capsized boat with Nick, told him he saw a light in the distance and decided to try and swim for it.

"I think he was delusional to think he could swim someplace," Will's father said.

Wow, they were really taking a risk taking off their jackets. Wearing a jacket does make it more difficult to swim.
