With the First Overall Pick in the 2009 NFL Draft

#1: The Detriot Lions Select Matt Stafford, Quaterback out of Georgia.
http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/05yH9Pt1OJ0Ap/340x.jpg
The Golden Rule of the NFL draft, is that if you don't have a franchise signal caller, never pass up the opportunity to get one. The Lions could go many ways with this pick and it would make an immediate upgrade, but with a small foundation already in place on offense (Calvin Johnson, Kevin Smith, Gosder Cherlis, Jeff Backus, Bryant Johnson) QB is the obvious choice there.

With the 2nd overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the St. Louis Rams select

http://www.thefootballexpert.com/jasonsmith_Baylor_v_KansasState.jpg

Jason Smith, OT, Baylor - Orlando Pace is old and oft-injured. Even if he can stay healthy this year and return to form he is still old, as mentioned. Jason Smith established himself as the best tackle in the draft at the combine and his upside easily warrants this pick.

With the 3rd overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs select Aaron Curry, LB Wake Forest

http://static.nfl.com/static/content/catch_all/nfl_image/aaron-curry-full-width.jpg

Aaron Curry is the best player in this year's draft and takes over at the Inside Linebacker position in the Chiefs new 3-4 defense.

With the 4th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks select Eugene Monroe, OT Virginia

http://www.virginia.edu/ssp_director/albums/album-82/lg/Monroe_Eugene.jpg

The Seattle Seahawks locked up TJ Houshmanzadeh and as a result wide receiver is not such a high priority since the Seahawks have Houshmanzadeh and Deion Branch. As a result, they look to protect Hassleback and draft Walter Jones eventual replacement. Monroe gets to learn from one of the best.

With the 5th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns select Michael Crabtree, WR Texas Tech

http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l276/DJL210/MichaelCrabtree.jpg

Forget the concerns about height and his long speed. They were never what made Michael Crabtree special. He comes into an offense that will take excellent advantage of his abilities and Brady Quinn gets another target after recently losing Kellen Winslow. Crabtree is the only option that is worth the 5th overall pick.

With the 6th selection in the 2009 draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select:

B.J. Raji, Defensive Tackle, Boston College

http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/09NPfZIh1k3Fm/610x.jpg

I was tempted, considering the shambles the receiving corps in Cincinnati is in, to take Michael Crabtree with this pick. But that decision was made for me by our instate and division rival. Likely I would have gone this direction anyway.

The Cincinnati Bengals have been in disarray of one sort or another for years. A fundamental change is needed in philosophy, beginning with the retooling of the offensive and defensive lines. With the top two offensive tackles taken this decision became a simple one.

B.J. Raji has all the tools you look for in a defensive tackle. He's strong as an ox, is quick and aware, and can tie up multiple blockers or penetrate gaps against the run and shows good burst as a rusher against the passing game. He has the potential to be a fantastic player.

The only questions concerning him are his work ethic and maturity, characteristics with which Cincinnati are all too familiar. His elite physical tools make him well worth the risk.

[With the 8th selection in the 2009 NFL draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select:

http://www.packerchatters.com/userfiles/image/MJenkins_002.jpg

Malcolm Jenkins, Cornerback, Ohio State University

I was hoping the Jaguars would be able to trade back from #8 but were unable to do so they take the best available option, Malcolm Jenkins.

His unexpected combine numbers aside many believe Jenkins to be the top cornerback prospect in this year's draft. If he were to project to safety, as some draft pundits believe, he would bring an elite level skill set to the position and Jacksonville would find itself with one of the top safety tandems in the NFL.

Jenkins is a very aware, intelligent, and consistent player and brings athleticism and versatility to the Jaguars.

With the 9th selection in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select:

http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2006/09/05/sports/05miami.1_600x356.jpg

Everette Brown, Outside Linebacker, Florida State

With BJ and the top offensive tackles gone I was puzzled as to which projected 3-4 OLB to take: Brown, Orakpo, or even the potential of Maybin.

Brown provides the best combination of experience and athleticism in my opinion. Orakpo seems a bit stiff and with Kampman transitioning to an OLB on the other side Orakpo seemed a bit too similar to him in style.

Everette Brown has shown excellent skills and still has ample room to grow. He shows great rush technique and has the agility necessary to turn and run in coverage if called upon. An excellent building block in the Packers transition to a 3-4 defense.

With the 10th selection in the 2009 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select

http://www.michaeloheronline.com/images/michael-oher-pictures%20(3).jpg

Michael Oher, OT, Ole Miss: The 49ers have not even pursued one of the many right tackles available in free agency this year leading me to believe that drafting one with their first pick is their plan. San Francisco would have liked to get Andre Smith because he is more of the "mauler" they are looking for but Oher has huge upside and they are more than happy to get him at 10.

With the 11th selection in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills select

http://www.mockmydraft.com/images/orakpo.jpg

Brian Orakpo, DE, Texas: Last season the Bills recorded only 24 sacks as a team. Sure that was without Aaron Schobel but that is still pathetic. A 260-pounder that runs a 4.7, benches 500+ pounds, and had a fantastic senior season is just too much to pass up at 11.

With the 14th selection in the 2009 NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints select

http://offsideswithfletcher.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/vontae2.jpg

The Saints have a huge hole at safety but there is no safety worth anywhere near the 14th pick. Brian Cushing is still available but I think he is a tad more overrated than Davis.

San Diego needs upgrades at both defensive end and linebacker. With Tyson Jackson off of the board, Cushing is the selection as he is a versatile linebacker who can help the Chargers immediately both at linebacker and special teams.

With the 20th Overall Pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, The Detriot Lions Select- Alphonso Smith, Cornerback out of Wake Forest

- Detriots whole defense is terrible and honestly they can go alot of ways with this pick and it would still be an immediate upgrade, they go with Alphonso here because of his consistent playmaking ability and the impact he has in the run game.

With the 21st selection of the draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select WR Jeremy Maclin

http://images.stltoday.com/stltoday/resources/maclin328x315spr08gm042008m.jpg

Maclin is too good to pass up at this point in the draft, especially considering the Eagles are suspect at receiver. There are still many other positions that need to be addressed, but with the addition of Maclin, McNabb now has a lot of weapons on the perimeter.

With the 22nd Overall selection in the 2009 NFL Draft, The Vikings Select Eben Britton, Tackle out of Arizona.

http://imgs.sfgate.com/c/pictures/2007/09/23/sp_calarizona67471.jpg

With McKenzie only starting 12 games as well as Cook only starting in 14, it wouldn't hurt the Vikings to add some young talented depth to there o-line. Especially with Alphonso already taken. Britton gives them solid depth as well as a long term solution at tackle.

Aaron Maybin, OLB, Penn St.

http://blog.pennlive.com/joehermitt/2008/04/small_59.jpg

The Patriots get an immediate upgrade towards their pass rush, coupled with Adalius Thomas, Maybin should provide a scary pass-rush, to couple the run-stopping DL of New England. Should start right away or give strong competition out of the gate to Banta-Cain and Crable.

With the 24th selection of the 2009 NFL Draft, the Atlanta Falcons select:
Brandon Pettigrew,TE, Oklahoma St.

http://walterfootball.com/images/fball/BPettigrew_int.jpg

Pettigrew should provide an immediate impact to Atlanta, his size, receiving skills, and blocking ability will provide the Atlanta offense with much more versatility and overall improvement. Matt Ryan will also gain a new easy to hit target to take pressure off the WR corps.

With the 25th selection of the NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select Hakeem Nicks, WR, North Carolina

http://media.scout.com/Media/Image/56/564395.jpg

Miami is extremely thin at receiver and the fact they brought in Laverneus Coles (for a visit) shows they want to upgrade at the position. Nicks is a big strong receiver with good hands and from watching him a few times this year, knows where he is on the field better than any receiver in the draft.

With the 26th selection in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Baltimore Ravens select

http://www.allfootball247.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/kenny-britt-wr-rutgers.jpg

Kenny Britt, WR, Rutgers - Derrick Mason is a very good receiver but he is 35 years old. Flacco has a good running game to fall back on whenever he needs to but every young quarterback needs weapons. Britt has all the tools of a #1 down the road and should make an immediate impact at across from Mason.

N-0mlHNP5u8

http://menofthescarletandgray.com/wp-content/uploads/beanie_stiffarm.jpg

http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/9053/prod.jpg

A borderline top 10 talent falling all the way to the late 1st at a position of need, I had to move up to secure him. Hightower has shown flashes of brilliance when starting but is even better when he a short yardage/goal line back. While Wells has potentially to be a full time back and a star in the NFL.

With the 28th selection of the NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia

http://pbrown16.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/uga-moreno.jpg

The heir apparent to brian Westbrook, Moreno will get immediate playing time as a backup and will also give the Eagles versatility as to where they line Westbrook up to reduce his workload. Moreno has great hands and can split out wide, he also finishes runs better than any back in the draft. Also solid in pass protection, something that has kept Eagles' running backs off of the field in previous years.

With the 29th pick in the 2009 NFL draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select:

http://www.footballsfuture.com/pic/photos/duke_robinson_300_250.jpg

Duke Robinson, Offensive Guard, Oklahoma

The Bengals addressed their interior defensive line with the 6th pick and move back into the late 1st to select the premier interior offensive lineman in the draft, Duke Robinson.

Robinson is a beastly powerful lineman with excellent technique. He will be excel in all assets of the Bengals offense and will man one of the guard spots at a top level for years to come.

30. Tennessee Titans: CB: Utah: Sean Smith

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/ssmith.jpg

Brings depth to the corner position that Titans currently lack, and also paired alongside Cortland Finnegan, Chris Hope and Michael Griffin, gives the Titans an argument for the best secondary in the league.

With the 33rd Overall Selection in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Detriot Lions select, William Beatty, Tackle out of UConn.

With them grabbing Stafford #1 overall, it makes sense to give him some protection right? Adding Beatty, allows them to move Backus to Guard which in turn helps them out even more. So getting Beatty here, improves there o-line in two ways. Beatty has the tools to be a great LT.

http://i2.cdn.turner.com/si/2008/writers/stewart_mandel/08/18/pitt.mccoy/t1_mccoy.jpg

The Giants do not have too many needs, and so with all WRs worth this spot gone, Louis Delmas, and Eben Britton/Duke Robinson off the board, the Giants should go BPA, and that happens to be LeSean McCoy. McCoy will provide the Giants with some excellent hands out of the backfield, and will put pressure on guys like Ahmad Bradshaw and Danny Ware lest they want to lose their spots. Even as a Giants fan I am not very happy with this pick, although the trade back brought us good value, we lost out on a couple of much more valuable players to this team, McCoy is the best player on the board and I would rather take him than reach on Phil Loadholt or Brian Robiskie.

With the 39th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft the Jacksonville Jaguars select:

http://media.scout.com/Media/Image/53/536701.jpg

Eric Wood, Center, Louisville

The interior of the Jacksonville offensive line is in shambles. After Robinson and Mack the next best player in my opinion is Eric Wood.

Wood brings a real tenacity and toughness to the Jags offensive line. He has incredible durability, setting the Cardinals record in games started, and is a very smart football player with first rate skills and intangibles.

http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i20/TyKixx/TroyKropog.jpg

Troy Kropog, Offensive Tackle, Tulane

Mark Tauscher, a free agent this year, is rumored to be fielding offers from the Vikings and Chad Clifton, who's contract expires next year, is really beginning to show the effects of years of battling in the tranches. The Packers need new blood at tackle.

Kropog shows excellent technique and is an excellent fit for the zone blocking scheme currently run by the Packers. He could stand a year or two in the weight room to bulk up but shows all the tools of being a good to great tackle in the NFL.

Phil Loadholt is a monster of a man, at 6'7 330 pounds, with Kareem McKenzie now 30, it might be smart to bring in a future replacement at RT. Loadholt also has the potential to play LT if a good enough coach can fix up his footwork, Loadholt is an excellent run blocker which is exactly what the Giants love to have, he will be able to provide some much needed depth to one of the best offensive lines in football.

http://media.scout.com/Media/Image/58/581501.jpg

With Chris Canty leaving in FA, DE is a huge need for the Dallas Cowboys, probably their biggest need. Jarron Gilbert seems to be a perfect fit for a 3- DE. Gilbert is a freak at 6'5 290 he ran a 4.8 at the combine. He has excellent acceleration and strength, and had so many TFLs in his Senior season, he will be an excellent run stuffer, and thats just what a 3-4 DE is needed to be. The Eagles have bigger needs on the offensive line and at tight end, but they place a high value on the corner position. With Moore still on the board, he is too good to pass on at this point. He sits on routes nicely and closes very well. Will certainly compete for a position in the nickel and dime packages and can be an immediate contributor on special teams.

Johnson makes perfect sense for the Pats here, He is a very instinctual and intelligent football player, he is versatile, and with a bit of work in the weight room, will give James Sanders a run for his money to start next season. He is also a product of Nick Saban, which Bellichick always views as a positive.

With Byrd, Butler, Smith, all gone, there simply isn't a corner worth this pick. With WR no longer a need an no OLB worth this pick either, it can't hurt to give your franchise QB more weapons to throw to right? Nelson isn't a fantastic blocker, but makes up for it in the passing game. Britt and Nelson are two young football players who can stretch the field as well as excel in the short passing game. Flacco is 1 happy QB now.

http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/0f187QUg9x9aL/610x.jpg

Jamon Meredith, Tackle, South Carolina

Meredith is a versatile offensive lineman, having played every position on the line except center through college. He had a good combine, and has the flexibility that the Patriots look for. Should add depth to the OL at the very least, and possibly replace Nick Kaczur at RT.

60. New York Giants: WR: Cal Poly: Ramses Barden:

http://www.gopoly.com/images/uploads/2009011915572132307_big.jpg

This feels like a bit of a reach but he is the best need BPA available, I could have taken a LB like Darry Beckwith or Marcus Freeman, but with the FA acquisition of Michael Boley that really is not a need. On the other hand whether or not Plaxico Burress comes back to big blue, WR is still a huge need, with the likes of Domenik Hixon, Steve Smith, and Sinorice Moss (trade for Boldin???) in the starting line-up. Ramses Barden will give Eli something he loves, a huge target he can throw it to. At 6'6 Ramses Barden's timed speed is not great but he has an athlete who has long speed, and is pretty fast for his size.

http://images.townnews.com/nhregister.com/content/articles/2008/08/29/sports/29-uconn_first_gamer.jpg

Scoring a potential first round pick late in the second always makes a prospect more intriguing. Brown will lessen Joseph Addai's load in the backfield and also demonstrates good hands as a receiver. Showed the ability to be a 20 carry per game player if the time arises in the NFL for him to become a full-time feature back.

The Titans are in desperate need of WRs, they have none even worth mentioning on the roster. I don't ever see Robiskie developing into a star player but I definitely see him becoming an excellent #2 or a very solid #1 receiver. Robiskie is an amazing route runner, and at 6'2 ran a pretty decent 40, proving he does have some decent speed. He can step up and contribute from day one for the Titans.

By far in a way the BPA, should have been drafted mid 1st round, and IMO will be the 2nd QB taken. Leinart has shown no signs of improvement and his contract is up the same time as Warner's. Freeman can learn under Warner for a year or two and when he retires can take over where he left off.

http://www.nationalchamps.net/2008/sub/pics/small/oregonstate_andy_levitre.jpg

With the Lions adding Stafford, it makes a ton of sense to give your franchise QB some protection right? Adding William Beatty moves Backus to Guard, so Levitre can play at the opposite side. This gives Detroit a far better line from last year with Gosder at Tackle, Backus and Levtire at Guard, and Beatty at the other tackle. The games are won in the trenches and Detroit helps Stafford and there running game out greatly with the addition of these guys.

http://members.cox.net/renegade_sith3/miscjunk/LSU-Darry-Beckwith-Sack.jpg

The Giants have only one true need in this draft and that is WR, with Ramses Barden selected, the Giants only concerns are the future, and depth. AP is aging, and although a field general, extremely lacking athletically, a replacement needs to be groomed for him, and there also needs to be a competition at SAM, Chase Blackburn really is nothing special, and Jonathon Goff can potentially be the future MIKE. Darry Beckwith comes to NYG, with a chance to start at SAM, but his real reason is to eventually replace AP, the competition with Goff would be good for both LBs and I am sure either can play SAM in our system as well.

Even when Roy Williams was there he was atrocious, this pick needs to be made, because who in the world is going to play SS on this team, Ken Hamlin? who will play FS? This team's secondary is in shambles other than Terrence Newman, who was injured most of last year. Chip Vaughn gives the Cowboys a physical SS, who is as much a liability in coverage as Roy Williams was. Chip Vaughn is another player out of that talented Wake Forest defense.

http://cache.deadspin.com/assets/images/deadspin/2008/08/kruger.jpg

Paul Kruger, DE, Utah

Kruger is a great value pick here, he has very high upside, and will add much needed depth along the defensive line. With Seymour/Green being UFAs next year, this adds a good rotational end with a motor, and possible replacement for at least Jarvis Green as a situational DE. With more bulk he could develop into a starter at DE for the Pats. He also offers the flexibility of the Vrabels Bruschis McGinests to eventually bring his hand off the ground in a few years, as his predecessors have.

I was hoping Fili Moala would be available here but he unfortunately didn't fall this far. The Packers select the next best available option to compete for the end spot in their newly installed 3-4.

Alex Magee has a fast motor and is a relentless player. He takes up space and should fill his role well, eating up blockers and allowing the linebackers in the 3-4 to make plays. He has shown some inconsistency but shows potential to be an excellent player and a steal in the thrid round.

Luigs is an intelligent, athletic, and aggressive player who helped pave the way for Felix Jones and Darren Mcfadden. He could use more time in the weight room but shows the tenacity to improve. A good pickup for the Bengals this late in the draft and fills an obvious position of need.

Scott McKillop, Linebacker, University of Pittsburgh

Mike Peterson signed with the Falcons during the offseason leaving the Jaguars with a need for a run stuffing middle linebacker.

Scott McKillop fits the bill. He brings a tenacity and toughness to the Jaguars and should excel in his role. His smarts and leadership will be welcomed in Jacksonville.

He does show limitations against the passing game so would likely be a two down player.

http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/tem/sports/m-footbl/auto_action/2534525.jpeg

Terrance Knighton, Defensive Tackle, Temple

The Packers were unable to grab a true 3-4 nose tackle in the early rounds and in Terrance Knighton grab a project in Round 5. Ryan Pickett will certainly start at the nose in 2009 with Knighton's big body backing him up.

Knighton is an active player for one of his size averaging 56 tackle, 3 fumble recoveries, and 2 blocked kicks over the past 2 years. He has the capacity to put on more weight allowing the Packers the time to see if he can serve as a servicable nose or if they need to resign Pickett or address the position in free agency or the draft next year.

Marko Mitchell, Wide Receiver, Nevada

TJ has signed elsewhere. Chris Henry can't seem to stay out of trouble. Ocho Cinco (are we still calling him that?) is a tantrum away from the possibility of outright release. A wide receiver is needed in Cincinnati.

Marko Mitchell could be a steal in the 5th round. He has excellent size, awareness and hands and has shown good straight line speed. A bit of a project as he doesn't have the strength or leaping ability his size (6'4", 218) would indicate but he certainly has the skill set to succeed in the NFL.

http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/2008/sioncampus/10/29/quickslants/glen-coffee-p1.jpg

Glenn Coffee, Running Back, Alabama

The Bengals have deceided to continue the Cedric Benson experiment but pick up some insurance in the 6th with Glenn Coffee.

Coffee declared early for the draft when many argue he could certainly have improved his stock with another year in school. That said, the Bengals may have gotten a steal this late in the draft.

Coffee seems to be a true slasher, seeing the hole and bursting through it. He has a tendency to punish defenders, running through them rather than trying to dance around them, which could wear on him during the career ahead.

He has shown a willingness and real ability to pass block and has proven a capable receiver out of the backfield. Coffee has shown good character, a much needed commodity in Cincinnati.

http://pbrown16.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/340x-11.jpg

His 4.41 40 time was considered a disappointment, a true speed back in the form of Darren Sproles, could be used in the return game and as a change of pace back for Wells and Hightower.

With the 192nd selection in the draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select Morgan Trent, CB, Michigan

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7OC0YbG2fek/SJiiy-_Rl7I/AAAAAAAAGmo/A0oVbbsTFUQ/s400/MorganTrent.jpg

This became a need as soon as Bryant McFadden signed with Arizona. Hopefully Morgan Trent can provide some solid depth and ultimately take over the Cornerback position in Pittsburgh.

With the 198th selection in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select:

http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/0e9T2X55yW6vY/340x.jpg

Ashlee Palmer, Linebacker, Ole Miss

The 7th round is the time for projects and Ashlee Palmer fits the bill. He is a tweener in the unconventional sense, a bit large for a safety and undersized for an outside linebacker.

He is an outstanding athlete possessing excellent speed and change of direction. He's shown very good body control and good hands and would likely project to a strong safety in the NFL. If he can add 10-15 pounds of body weight without losing speed he could be a good weak side linebacker and could cover tight ends and linebackers with ease.

Palmer would begin to shine early on special teams where his athleticism and knack for finding the ball carrier would suit the Bengals well.

With the 201st pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select:

http://www.nationalchamps.net/2008/sub/pics/small/georgiatech_andrew_gardner.jpg

Andrew Gardner, Offensive tackle, Georgia Tech

I was originally leaning toward a punter here but the Packers have two young legs signed and seem content to let them fight it out in camp.

Rumor is that Mark Tauscher will not return from his knee injury until October which leaves the Packers in a bind at the right tackle position. Breno Giacomini would seemingly be penciled in as the starter but is largely untested. The Packers would need depth at the position at least until Tauscher's return.

Andrew Gardner has been a very durable and hard working player during his college years. He doesn't have elite athleticism but is a lunch pail player who always gives good effort. He should provide solid depth for the Packers at the tackle position.

With the 202nd pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers select

http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/04rPadCcel3y8/340x.jpg

Antonio Appleby, ILB, Virginia - Takeo Spikes is not going to play forever and I would wager that this will be his last good year. Appleby has the measureables, production, and experience in a 3-4 defense to eventually take over for him or at least contribute on special teams.

With the 207th selection in the draft, the San Diego Chargers select Roy Miller, DT, Texas

http://www3.pictures.gi.zimbio.com/Tostitos+Fiesta+Bowl+IevInwFNivnl.jpg

San Diego needs to start grooming a heir apparent to Jamal Williams, who is still a great player, but 33. Roy Miller is a good wide body, and is surprisingly quick for a man his size and (more importantly for a 3-4 NT) very strong.
