Rams Release Torry Holt
Friday, March 13, 2009

By Nick Wagoner
Senior Writer

The Rams said goodbye to a franchise icon for the second time this week when they officially released wide receiver Torry Holt on Friday after 10 seasons with the team.

"The Rams will forever be grateful for the way Torry Holt represented the Rams on the field and in the community," owner/chairman Chip Rosenbloom said. "He is an All Pro in every sense of the word. Over the past 10 seasons Torry has proven himself to be one of the finest wide receivers in league history. This is a difficult decision because Torry has meant so much to the organization. In my mind and for all Rams fans, Torry will always be a Ram and we wish him and his family nothing but the best as they move forward."

Speculation about Holtís future began during the 2008 season and it became clear that he was not in the teamís plans earlier in the offseason as it continues to re-shape the roster around young, ascending players.

Holtís release saves the Rams a significant amount of money under the salary cap for 2009. This year was the final year of Holtís contract and Holt was due to count $10.2 million against the cap. His release saves the Rams about $8 million in salary cap space.

A decision on Holt had to be made as the Rams would have owed him a $1.25 million roster bonus on March 17. After shopping him in trade to no avail, the team settled on cutting Holt before the bonus was due. In conjunction with tackle Orlando Paceís release on Tuesday, the Rams have saved more than $14 million with the two moves.

The move is more than a matter of economics, though, as the moves the team has made this offseason represent a shift toward younger players. Holtís number declined to their lowest point since his rookie season in 2008 when he finished with 64 catches for 796 yards and three touchdowns.

Before that, though, Holt has proved himself as one of the leagueís most productive and classiest players.

"Torry Holt has had an outstanding career here in St. Louis," general manager Billy Devaney said. "We thank Torry for the many things he has done for the Rams organization on and off the field."

In this decade, no receiver has put up better numbers than Holt. Since 2000, Holt has posted 817 receptions for 11,872 yards, the best totals of any wide out in the league in that time period.

In 158 career games, Holt has averaged 80.1 yards per game, the most per contest of any player in NFL history. Along the way, Holt has caught a pass in 153 consecutive games and ranks 11th in league history in receptions (869) and 14th in yards (12,660).

The Rams originally selected Holt with the sixth overall selection in the 1999 NFL Draft. Holt made an immediate impact as a rookie and over the first few years of his career, teamed with Isaac Bruce to form one of the most dominant receiving duos in league history.

The release of Holt and Pace leaves defensive end Leonard Little as the last remaining member of the team's 1999 Super Bowl championship squad.

What? Who do they have as receivers now?

He won't be on the market for long. I could see him in SF with Isaac Bruce again..

Yeah the Rams cut Drew Bennett

Panthers, Titans, Giants, Jets, Bears and Ravens are the 6 teams I see having the most interest in Holt.

Depending on the contract he gets and his performance next season, the compensatory pick the Rams get next year may be better than whatever trade offers other teams were sending them.

EDIT: Nevermind. No comp picks on cut players. Forgot about that...for shame...

The Jets would make sense, since we wouldn't have to rush a rookie into starting. Plus Holt would be a nice guy for a young quarterback (which I presume we'll have in some way) and helps our chances of making the playoffs despite a questionable at best QB situation. Wouldn't mind if we saved the money to extend #29, though.

Yes and no for the Chiefs it makes sense but for Holt I'm not so sure at his age I look for him to go to a more proven team if he can but I would love to have him.

Not a suprising move at all, I think any1 with a clue about the St. Louis Rams which isn't very many people saw it coming. I hope he ends up on a good team with a great chance to succeed next year. I know he kinda asked to be released, and that might seem assholeish to some people, but not to me. I mean, c'mon I wouldn't exactly to be thrilled with the Rams right now. Donnie Avery and the rest of the scrubs we have, ouch!

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/2009/03/sources-holt-to-titans-trade-fell-apart/

The Tennessee Titans were on the verge of completing a trade for St. Louis Rams wide receiver Torry Holt yesterday, sources close to the situation informed the National Football Post.

The NFP has also learned that the deal between the Titans and Rams fell through because Holt refused to restructure his current contract. Holtís refusal not only caused the potential trade to fall apart, but also led to his release from the St. Louis Rams earlier today.

Now a free agent at the age of 32, Holt caught 64 passes for 796 yards and 3 touchdowns in 14 starts for the Rams last season.

More on this story as it develops.

Just a rumor, but nevertheless, it gives me hope. At least gives insight on why the Rams would have trouble trading him.

Does this mean that Crabtree could be a possibility if Jason Smith is not there? I mean Donnie Avery wasn't exactly consistent. I think if the Rams don't get at least some insurance through FA or the draft, they are in for a disaster of a season.

Just brought this up in the Rams forum.

They essentially have two first round picks with #2 and #34. If they took Crabtree, they'd probably still be able to get a decent OT later on.

Doesn't seem likely to go O-O with their awful defense, but we've seen weirder things happen....

True, but this is the dilemma when you have a team with so many holes.

Im guessing this was more of Holt's doing than Spags. I wonder if the Giants give him a look.

Not really. I would think that this would have been his stance for every team, not just the Titans. His cap number was over $10 million, and no team was gonna take that on - unless they're Dan Snyder, Jerry Jones, or Al Davis.

Either way, it is just a rumor.

He'll be a nice pickup for some team. I've always been a fan of Holt, and I think he's still got enough left to be dangerous. Maybe if Boldin is traded in Arizona he could be a nice addition there.

Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports the San Francisco 49ers are not showing any interest in acquiring St. Louis Rams WR Torry Holt at this time.

-The Charlotte Observer is "nipping in the bud" all talk of Torry Holt possibly signing with the Panthers.
Holt, an N.C. State grad, has expressed a desire to finish his career in his home state, but his brother is no longer with the Panthers. More importantly, Carolina is up against the salary cap and wide receiver isn't currently a position of need. Mar. 13 - 6:15 pm et
