I did this mock a few days so, so it might be obsolete, but let me know what you guys think...
1. Detroit Lions: Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia
This is a no-brianer here. The Golden Rule of the NFL Draft is, "If You Dont Have a Franchise QB, Don't Pass on One". Dante Culpepper is not the long or short term answer. Matthew is a portential Hall of Fame kid who i believe Detroit is willing to build a franshise around. If he stays healthy, he will have a great 15-16 year carrer.
2. St. Louis Rams: Jason Smith, OT, Baylor
The Rams desperately need to give Marc Bulger more time in the pocket. And with the releasing of Orlando Pace, the Rams need another big Tackle. Great, safe pick by the Rams.
3. Kansas City Chiefs: Aaron Curry, OLB, Wake Forest
New Head Coach Todd Haley is a offensive mindset kind of guy, but that doesn't help the fact that they desperately need another presence on their defense. Aaron Curry may be the one of a handful of kids in this draft that will make an imediate impact in his rookie season, and thats what the Cheifs need. They grab the safest, and best defensive pick here.
4. Seattle Seahawks: Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia
For the last two months, this pick was a lock to go to Michael Crabtree. But with the recent signing TJ Houshmandzadeh to a 5 yr. $40 mil. contract, it would be ludicris to play that money to another reciever. Monroe is a great, versatle Tackle who will work hard to keep Matt Hasselbeck on his feat next year.
5. Cleveland Browns: Brian Orakpo, OLB, Texas
The Browns could easily take an Offensive lineman here, but last year they selected Joe Thomas in the 1st round. I don't see back-to-back 1st rounders being O-Lineman. Clevand desperately needs a defensive player, and that's what they will get with Brian Or-sack-po. Great, smart kid who isn't a flashy player, but gets the job done, and thats all you can ask for.
6. Cincinnati Bengals: Michael Oher OT Mississippi
With the lost of TJ Housh(ugh, don't make me spell it again) to Seattle, and the pening release of Chad Johnson (i refuse to call him Ocho Cinco), Cinci COULD take a reciever here. But they do still have troubled Chris Henry, and 2nd year reciever Jerome Simpson, i think they will be fine. Carson Palmer will thank his lucky stars he finally has a Pro-Bowl caliber guy blocking for him.
7. Oakland Raiders: Jeremy Maclin, WR, Missouri
Every draft has a suprrise pick that makes everyone go "WOW", well...here ya go. Even two weeks ago The Raiders would have been jumping up and down to see Michael Crabtree fall this far, but i think when the time comes, Al Davis will want the speedy kid from Missouri. Crabtree is the best prospect in the draft, but Maclin finally gives Oakland a premier kick and punt returner, along with a terrific reciever.
8. Jacksonville Jaguars: Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech
With the recent trouble Matt Jones has gotten in (and what a shame, a waste of great talent), it's a matter of time before Jacksonville releases him, or he is kicked out of the NFL. Then they only have Dennis Northcutt, and draft bust Troy Williamson to catch for them. Michael Crabtree will sell tickets, along with being a terrific reciever.
9. Green Bay Packers: B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College
Green Bay could have been a potential NFC Championship team if anyone but AJ Hawk came on play on Sunday for their defense last year. BJ Raji is the definition of a Boom-or Bust player. He will either be working at a Best Buy, or in Hawaii, starting for the Pro-Bowl team. Green Bay jumps the gun and selects him a little higher than i would have, but they do get a potential great player here.
10. San Francisco 49ers: Aaron Maybin OLB Penn State
All eyes will be on Mike Singletary to see if he takes Mark Sanchez here, but i think he will get cold feet, and pick the BDPA (Best Defensive Player Avalible) here. Mike will get a great pass rusher that he can take under his wing and groom as his own little project.
11. Buffalo Bills: Everette Brown, DE/OLB, Florida State
QB Trent Edwards finally has someone to throw to this year in Terrell Owens. Trent will want an O-Lineman at this spot, but Buffalo desperately needs a pass rusher, and that's what they will get here with Everette Brown.
12. Denver Broncos: Brian Cushing, LB, USC
Denver may try to butter of Jay Cutler by selecting a nice, big O-Lineman to thank him for the whole Matt Cassel thing here, but Denter needs will need linebackers with their switch to a 3-4 defense. Brian will make a great impact, and transition to the NFL.
13. Washington Redskins: Andre Smith, OT, Alabama
Anytime before the Combine, if i had Andre falling this far, i would be stoned to death. But this is not to far fetched at all. Andre has character issues, but Washington NEEDS an Tackle, and they're willing to take this project as their own. If he is still on the board, there is NO WAY Washington takes any other player here.
14. New Orleans Saints: Malcolm Jenkins CB Ohio State
Cornerback is a posistion that tends to be overlooked. Perhaps that is why Malcolm falls this far. He is a terrific kid with tons of upside. I see him as the Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie of next year. Will come in and not make an imediate impact, but when the veterins start to wear down, Jenkins will step up and solidify himself as the starter for the next decade or so.
15. Houston Texans: Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois
As much as they would like to grab the other USC linebacker, they just have to much of a need at Corner. Davis is a terrific kid, and his he works hard enough, can be a premier kick returner (something they lost when they smartly chose Mario Williams over Reggie Bush). Vontae will not have a flashy carrer, but he will make the plays when u need him to.
16. San Diego Chargers: Rey Maualuga, ILB, USC
With a restuctured deal for LT, the Chargers have no need to take a runningback this high. Rey is a terific linebacker who is great at stoping the run. He will compliment the steroid induced Shanwe Merriman for years on a San Diego defense that just might be missing this one final piece of the puzzle.
17. New York Jets: Mark Sanchez, QB, USC
If the 49ers don't take Mark Sanchez, the Jets will immediately call him and start planning his press conference. I don't see a team between New York and San Fransisco that is willing to take a QB this high in the draft. Kellen Clemens is not the answer for NY, and i dont think Sanchez is either, but they will take him here.
18. Chicago Bears: Darrius Heyward-Bey, WR, Maryland
Chicago needs another big time reciever, although a defensive player wouldn't shock me here. Devin Hester isn't a legit #1 reciever, but Heyard-Bey might be. And that MIGHT might be enough to make Chicago invest their 1st rounder on this Combine riser.
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Josh Freeman, QB, Kansas State
Jon Gruden might be gone, but the QB problem isn't. If the draft plays out correctly, they could grab him in the second round, but i dont think they are willing to risk that. Josh has been prepared to Jamarcus Russell, a tall, freak althlete of a QB with a strong arm. But i also believe he will be like him, in the sence of, a QB selected way to early in the 1st round with no O-line to protect him.
20. Detroit Lions: Eben Britton, OT, Arizona
Although William Beatty is still on the board, Eben would make more sence here. He is a terrific athlete who can play almost every posistion of the O-Line. He would also give Mathew Stafford that extra time in the pocket needed to make plays. I wouldn't be supprised to see Detorit go defense here, but they will want to do all the can to protect their new QB.
21. Philadelphia Eagles: William Beatty, OT, Connecticut
With McNabb on the verge of a Vince Young-esq breakdown, they will want to give him a Offensive player to help him out. They may go reciever here with Percy Harvin, and that is a very legitiment possiblity, but they have two 1st rounders to play with, and another guy to let McNabb make plays is extremely high on their list.
22. Minnesota Vikings: Alphonso Smith, CB, Wake Forest
Chris Wells is still on the board, but Minnesota's last need this season is a runningback. They also have a solidified D-Line, so no need to go that direction. Reciever is a possibility, but after the Troy Williamson disaster, they might be hesitent to go that route (pun, get it?). Smith is a good prospect, with a ton of upside. A defensive project like this might be what Minnesota needs.
23. New England Patriots: Connor Barwin, DE/OLB, Cincinnati
Barwin is good at around 4 posistions on defense, but not great at any of them. He can fill in for any player that may tired, and need a series break. He probably will not make the Pro-Bowl, but can be effective in their defensive rotation.
24. Atlanta Falcons: Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma St.
Giving Rookie of the Year Matt Ryan ANOTHER target will be key to getting Atlanta back to the playoffs. This draft is deep in defensive player who can help them, but they can get those guys in the later rounds. Pettigrew and can block like an Tackle, and catch like a reciever. He may not break any speed records, but a safety cushin for Ryan may be the best thing for Atlanta for the next few years.
25. Miami Dolphins: Peria Jerry, DT, Mississippi
It was rumored that if Miami didn't go O-Line last year, they would have looked at Chris Long instead. They grab their D-Lineman here with this great young talent. He can fill holes, and get to the QB. Or if anything, take up two Guards, while someone blitzes from behind. Great pick up.
26. Baltimore Ravens: Hakim Nicks, WR, North Carolina
Flacco defiantely is the real deal in Baltimore. A reciever he can always look to may be key for getting Baltimore back into the Super Bowl. Defense is also a major possibilty here. Maybe James Laurinaitis or Larry English, someone to groom to replace a aging Ray Lewis.
27. Indianapolis Colts: Fili Moala, DT, USC
Indy can finally take that sigh of relief as another great USC player falls to them at the 27th spot in the draft. Moala is a BIG kid, who can be very effective while taking pressure off of Dwighty Freeney. Fili will no doubt be effective at getting into the back field and getting the opposing QB running, something Indy hasn't had in a few years.
28. Philadelphia Eagles: Chris Wells, RB, Ohio St.
Phili can finally get that Thunder and Lighting combo that New York once had with Ron Dayne and Tiki Barber. Chris is a great, big running back who reminds me a lot of college Ron Dayne. Someone his size shouldn't be able to outrun a corner back, but some how both were able too. This pick may just fuel the fire between Phili and Brian Westbrook, but if anything happens, Wells will be there to replace him.
29. New York Giants: Percy Harvin, WR, Florida
New York can finally start on the road of moving foward from the Plaxico Burgess situation. Harvin is a great, quick reciever who can get off of blocks and get the ball. May be more suited to be a slot reciever, but can beef up and make the transition of a SOLD #2, or possibly down the road, a #1.
30. Tennessee Titans: D.J. Moore, CB, Vanderbilt
DJ is a very effective corner with blazing speed. He and Michael Griffin will be part of a very feared backfield on an already terrifing Tennesee defense.
31. Arizona Cardinals: Knowshon Moreno, RB, Georgia
This pick finally solidfies the end of the Edgerin James era for the Cardinals. Knowshon is a great kid with terrific personality and will fit into the Cardinals club house perfectly. Oh, i forgot, he's a great running back too. He doesn't have blazing speed, but he will break those 20+ yard runs that Edge or Tim Hightower just can't. Arizona will also look to Alex Mack for O-Line help, or Michael Johnson or Larry English for pass rushing help.
32. Pittsburgh Steelers: Alex Mack, C, California
Pittsburgh finally gets their franchise Center (yes, that does sound weird). He will be able to stap the ball effectively for Ben Roethlisberger, while also being an anchor on an already great, Super Bowl O-Line. Great and smart pick by Pittsburg.
1. Detroit Lions: Matthew Stafford, QB, Georgia
This is a no-brianer here. The Golden Rule of the NFL Draft is, "If You Dont Have a Franchise QB, Don't Pass on One". Dante Culpepper is not the long or short term answer.
