Minnesota Vikings Mock Draft – 4/05

Ok well here’s my first shot at an actual mock for us. I’m a rookie so take this with a grain of salt and let me know what you guys think. I'll probably do another update the week of the draft but for now this is what I think could happen. Go ahead, let me have it.

1.22 – Hakeem Nicks – WR – North Carolina
I’ve made it known on this board that I really like Harvin for us but the number of red flags probably means he is going to be off our board when draft day arrives. That being said I really like Hakeem Nicks for us as well. He is a big body that is great after the catch and should be a terror in the red zone. With Peterson forcing teams to put extra guys in the box and Berrian stretching the field Nicks should see a ton of favorable matchups. The way we pursued TJ Housh indicates our need for a big time playmaker at the WR position and Nicks is just that. Obviously OL and CB are the other options at this pick.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_2ikEvVMmmzg/SZH6XxfcUZI/AAAAAAAACf8/sOo6Qs9vVYM/s400/HakeemNicks.jpg

2.54 – Jamon Meredith – OT – South Carolina
This pick is going to be either OL or CB. I think that we go Meredith because we have more of a need at this position. I think that Meredith will be the highest rated OT available at 54 which makes him the pick. He is an experienced player and should fill in nicely on the right side. Ryan Cook has struggled badly playing on the outside so Meredith should step in right away and contribute.

http://media.scout.com/media/image/61/613072.jpg

3.86 – Macho Harris – CB – Virginia Tech
At this point Macho would be a great value and terrific fit for our system. Harris has adequate size, is physical and has great ball skills. There is a chance that he is gone at this point but if he’s available he is going to be the pick. He would immediately compete for a nickel spot and can also help out on special teams right away. Macho is a very confident kid that should be able to hold his own at the next level.

http://walterfootball.com/images/fball/VHarris.jpg

5.158 – Chris Baker – DT – Hampton
Here I am simply agreeing with Dynasty’s fifth round pick. I think that DT is going to be addressed at some point in this draft in order to find an eventual replacement for Pat Williams. At this point Baker will probably be the best available. He would also be pressed into action early on if the Williams’ Wall loses their case and are forced to sit out early next year.

http://www.perennialse.com/Portals/0/Chris%20Baker%20at%20Combine.jpg

7.221 – Sammie Stroughter – WR – Oregon State
This is a pick that will impact special teams right away could offer some upside at the WR position as well. Stroughter could be very dangerous returning kicks and punts inside the Dome. This kid is very elusive and the few times I watched him play he really had that WOW factor in the return game. I also really like the Wallace kid from Ole Miss but he should probably be gone at this point.

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/ABPub/2008/03/14/2002071280.jpg

7.231 – Tim Jamison – DE – Michigan
We could use some depth at DE and while Jamison won’t be an impact player he could be a nice depth chart filler.

I would love if this was our draft and i could see a lot of it happening. Not sure if Baker will be there in the 5th round, though...

I would say this would be a very good draft for us. I like Nicks, and Macho Harris. Dont know too much on Jamon but from what Ive heard Ive liked. Also I like the 7th round KR pick. So if this happens on Draft Day I would be happy.

Pretty much my ideal draft man. If we get Nicks, Meredith and Macho I will be a very happy man on draft day.

The worst thing is sitting there on draft day when the guys you want are available and then the team goes in a totally different direction. It wouldn't surprise me to this happen a couple times this year, because I really think we could go a ton of different ways.

That would be pretty good, I'm pretty sure Baker won't last that far, I'm in the process of doing a full 7 round mock and he went in the late 2nd to Miami, and I can't see him getting out of the 3rd. Nicks is pretty good, but I'm starting to think after he put on so much weight that he isn't worth a pick at 22 as there would likely be better options at RT or even WR, such as Britt(who I'm a big fan of) or DHB. Other than that, it looks good. I don't think Jamison makes it to the 7th as he will likely be picked anywhere from the 4th-6th. Also, I'd like to see us get some depth at S/LB somewhere in the late rounds.

Thanks for the kind words. Hopefully I'll be able to an update early next week and then one more the week of the draft.

I'm a big fan of that draft and appreciate the effort. Nicks and Harris are two picks I love, and I feel both would fit seemlessly into our plans right out of the gate. I'm not a huge Meredith fan, but just seeing anyone other than Ryan Cook planted at right tackle would make me happy. Overall I like it and would be very happy walking away with that type of haul.

I think this is kinda of odd But Matt birk played LT in college and got moved to center and everyone kinda scratched their head and bitched we didnt resign Christie. Ryan Cook was a center we moved to tackle but something tells me he goes back inside or we draft Unger in the second round or the tackle from Oklahoma Personally Id love this draft.

1 Nicks
2OT Oklahoma
3 Macho
5 Pat White <-------------he could really be something and in all honesty he may even be able to start on this team at qb
6th fb/te
7th If davis the qb from ball state is available he is worth this pick especially if we dont draft Pat white
7th the dt from hampton some say he wont get drafted if he does it wont be until real late.

I was confused with your paragraph. Are you talking about what we're going to do at C? If so, we drafted Sullivan last year and the team really likes him. Also, we have no 6th round pick. That went to Philly from the Kelly Holcomb deal a year or two ago. Another of Chilly's dumb QB moves. Also, The OT from Oklahoma is Phil Loadholt, Pat White'll be gone by the 5th, and the DT from hampton is Baker and he will be gone by the time the 4th round starts and he could even go in the late 2nd, he is moving up draft boards, due to his ability to play 3-4 NT or DE, or 4-3 DT, so he won't be available in the 7th.

Man I've been really busy and just haven't been able to do the write ups. I'll do them tomorrow at some point and post! Here are my picks though:

1.22 - Eben Britton (Arizona)
2.54 - Macho Harris (VTech)
3.86 - Juaquin Iglesias (Oklahoma)
5.158 - Darryl Richard (Georgia Tech)
7.221 - Sammie Stroughter (Oregon State)
7.231 - Tim Jamison (Michigan)

Don't rip me apart until I get a chance to post my explanations! :)

Hagy's Minnesota Vikings Mock 2.0 - April 16th
Needs: QB, OT, WR, CB, DT

1.22 – Eben Britton – OT – Arizona
April 5th Pick: Hakeem Nicks – WR - North Carolina

It’s obvious to everyone that the offensive line needs to be upgraded after watching that right side last year, not to mention the question marks with Mount McKinnie. Britton would be able to step in right away and contribute, something that coach Childress needs in order to keep his job. Adding a wide receiver is an option but I just don’t see us going that direction in round one any more. Given the depth of the receiver class I think this pick is on the offensive line.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qjCoAi_O8oE/Sb3WF3QSTII/AAAAAAAAA7I/tTTBWUOFW-0/s320/eben_britton_385.jpg

2.54 – Victor “Macho” Harris – CB – Virginia Tech
April 5th Pick: Jamon Meredith – OT – South Carolina

OK. OK. This may be a reach but a good one at that. He may have third round value but I really like Macho and I don’t think he’ll make it to our pick at 86. The big guns at the wide-out position will be long gone by now and I think Harris will be the best available cover two corner. He brings great experience and ball skills to the table and could even help out in the return game. I think this kid is a gamer and will step in right away and play nickel for our favorite team.
http://media.scout.com/Media/Image/54/546464.jpg

3.86 – Juaquin Iglesias – WR – Oklahoma
April 5th Pick: Victor “Macho” Harris – CB – Virginia Tech

I’ve really come to like Juaquin at this point in the draft. He is a good playmaker that played in some huge games at OU. We need to address the wide receiver position at some point in the draft and I think this is a perfect time to do it. He could step in, play the slot and give the Sage/TJack show another option in the passing game. This pick completes the trio of our big needs (OT,CB,WR), aside from the QB position of course!
http://grfx.cstv.com/schools/okla/graphics/auto/20080818_header_iglesias.jpg

5.158 – Darryl Richard – DT – Georgia Tech
April 5th Pick: Chris Baker – DT – Hampton

Defensive tackle is another position that should be addressed in this draft and while Richard isn’t an impact type player, he could be a good option should one of the Williams’ Wall go down. I like the idea of a mid-round DT as opposed to a higher pick because our defensive line just doesn’t warrant a high pick at this point with so many other needs. The Baker kid from Hampton would be better but he will probably be long gone at this point.
http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/65139/Darryl_Richard.jpg

7.221 – Sammie Stroughter – WR – Oregon State
April 5th Pick: SAME

This is the same pick I had in the prior mock, for obvious reasons our special teams could use a boost and Stroughter is just that. He will help out immediately in the return game and I really think he offers good upside at the WR position. We’ve spent late picks on receivers in previous years and they haven’t panned out, we really need some good young depth that can contribute on Sundays.
http://www.gazettetimes.com/content/articles/2008/10/30/beavers_sports/top_story/4osu02_sammie.jpg

7.231 – Tim Jamison – DE – Michigan
April 5th Pick: SAME

Another pick the same as the last mock. I think Jamison could fall this far and if he does we should pounce. He’ll provide even more depth for our defensive line and at this point of the draft that is all you are really looking for.

I like it. Not a sexy draft, but it plugs some big holes and Britton, Harris, and Iglesias should all contribute as early as next season. I'd be happy if the draft played out that way and I'd be OK reaching for Macho as I'm very high on him as well. Good work. :)

marshallb
04-16-2009, 04:26 PM
That's pretty good, I think we will go WR in the first unless Oher falls. Macho is good in the 2nd, but I think we could trade down a ways and get him or possibly even get him with our 3rd. Iglesias is ok, but I'm not a fan. Walker isn't bad. I don't like the Stroughter pick though. After taking Iglesias, we don't need another WR, we'd just need a KR and there'll likely be much better KRs available than Stroughter. Thigpen is one that comes to mind. Jamison is alright, but I'd like to see us grab a S/LB in the 7th for depth and for special teams.

I like him, but he's a bit of a project and he isn't right for all teams. I don't think he'll be there by our pick in the 3rd though. That and I'd probably rather get more of a true possession receiver.

I'm not a big Barden fan personally, and I agree with marshallb in that I'd be surprised if he was available at #86. If we go with a WR in the 2nd day I'd like to see it be a return specialist.

I don't think there will be a WR available in the 2nd worth drafting. Personally, if we take a WR in the 3rd, my favorites would be Brandon Tate or Brandon Gibson. If we wait until the 5th, then I'd go with Wallace(if available) or McKinley or Byrd. If we'd wait all the way until the 7th round, then I'd go with Cosby or Butler or someone along those lines.

Yea, a lot of guys come back from that just fine, but a lot of guys are also never the same again. I think he could be a major steal as well, since there was some talk about him being a late 1st rounder before his injury and all of these juniors declaring, and now best case scenario for him looks like late 3rd.

I could get on board with a Tate selection. He's one of only a couple 2nd day WR's I could see becoming a premier WR. If he makes it all the way back from injury he'll be a steal for the team that lands him.

Here is my full Vikings mock. I did a full 2 round draft, which can be found here: http://draftcountdown.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33013. I expanded on that and made it into a full 7 round Vikings mock.

I cannot believe that it is almost draft eve! I’m so excited for our picks on Saturday and to find out who will be wearing purple in 2009. It should be a great day and I hope that most of you will be checking in at some point to offer some insight on our picks. That being said, here is my final mock. It probably will be way off but I’ve had some fun putting these together and am excited to see how mine stacks up to our actual picks. Let me know what you guys think!

Hagy’s Minnesota Vikings Mock 3.0 – April 24th
Needs: QB, OT, WR, CB, DT

1.22 – Eben Britton – OT – Arizona
April 5th Pick: Hakeem Nicks – WR - North Carolina
April 16th Pick: Eben Britton – OT – Arizona

I’ve gone back and forth with this pick for a while now. For me it really came down to a few different wide receivers or Britton. I think that the front office and coaches will ultimately be spilt on this decision just because of the fact that there are so many different picks we could actually make at twenty two. We have a definite need in both areas but I think we are looking for a more instant impact which is why we will decide to shore up the offensive line. It’s no secret that we want to improve the right side and Britton would fit in nicely. He can start from day one and will help our in the run game and also give Sage/Jackson a bit more time to operate. In order for this team to be successful in ’09 we need to open holes for Adrian and protect our god awful quarterbacks. As I said receiver is also an option at this point and Nicks, Britt, DHB and Harvin could all be in play here. Don’t sleep on us possibly taking a corner here as well although I think it is a long shot.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qjCoAi_O8oE/Sb3WF3QSTII/AAAAAAAAA7I/tTTBWUOFW-0/s320/eben_britton_385.jpg

2.54 – Victor “Macho” Harris – CB – Virginia Tech
April 5th Pick: Jamon Meredith – OT – South Carolina
April 16th Pick: Victor “Macho” Harris – CB – Virginia Tech

As I’ve said before this might be a bit of a reach in some people’s eyes but not in mine. I have big expectations for Harris at the next level and he will be a perfect fit in our cover two system. Victor is a hardnosed player who isn’t afraid to stick his head in the middle of a play, similar to Antoine Winfield. Something that is often over looked is Harris’ ball skills and return ability. He is awesome with the ball in his hands and should be able to make some impact plays right away in 2009. I would expect him to play the nickel early on and eventually become a full time player. He will be gone at 86 so we nab him here and end day one by filling two big needs in offensive tackle and corner. We could also look for a defensive tackle at this point and don’t rule out one of the wide receivers falling to us at 54 on draft day as well. Don’t get caught up in the Pat White smokescreen that made news early this week. I think that is clearly a play to entice teams to possibly move up to grab White, he just doesn’t seem like a guy that would fit into our offense.

http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w230/SlapstickGandhi/0000macho.jpg

3.86 – Juaquin Iglesias – WR – Oklahoma
April 5th Pick: Victor “Macho” Harris – CB – Virginia Tech
April 16th Pick: Juaquin Iglesias – WR – Oklahoma

Well this pick was going to be Brandon Tate but the late breaking news on the failed drug test will obviously change that. I think we pass on Tate for the same reason we pass on Harvin in round one so we end up with Iglesias. He should be a nice WR opposite Berrian and will be able to make his far share of big plays in one on one coverage. Ramses Barden is someone that we could also look at or we may opt for someone along the defensive line. It’s too bad that we lose out on Tate because he would’ve been a huge upgrade both on special teams and in the passing game.

http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/21114/Iglesias.jpg

5.158 – Ricky Jean-Francois – DT – Louisiana State
April 5th Pick: Chris Baker – DT – Hampton
April 16th Pick: Darryl Richard – DT – Georgia Tech

It wouldn’t surprise me to see defensive tackle as early as round two but in this scenario we go with the best available player at the position. Francois was highly touted coming out of high school and has really disappointed at LSU. LSU’s loss ends up being our gain, I think he has the chance to be a productive player in the near future. He has great upside and could very well be off the board by this point but his lack of production in college will cause him to slide into the middle of day two. He would be a nice heir to Pat’s throne and would solidify the defensive line once Fat Pat decides to move on. I also like Darryl Richard or Roy Miller at this point in round five.

http://media.2theadvocate.com/images/90_lsu_010808.jpeg

7.221 – Kevin Ellison – OLB – Southern California
April 5th Pick: Sammie Stroughter – WR – Oregon State
April 16th Pick: Sammie Stroughter – WR – Oregon State

It’s well known that I really like Stroughter but I’m beginning to think he’ll be gone at this point meaning we turn to the defensive side of the ball. It was no secret that our special teams coverage struggled last year and our depth at LB is lacking, hell we had to sign Nap Harris off the street! Ellison isn’t a sexy pick as he lacks the athletic ability to be an impact player but he is a tough kid who is a good tackler. He should help out on special teams and will be ok as a backup linebacker. The end of day two is about depth and Ellison should be just that. I also like the idea of more offensive line depth if someone is available this late.

http://www.trojannyc.com/images/2007/06/14/sw2.jpg

7.231 – Tim Jamison – DE Michigan
April 5th Pick: Tim Jamison – DE – Michigan
April 16th Pick: Tim Jamison – DE – Michigan

Well here’s hoping that our own Mr. Irrelevant actually makes the squad in 2009. The past two guys we picked with our final selection haven’t sniffed the field and while that isn’t uncommon it would be nice to hit on one of these seventh round players. At this point I’m hoping Jamison is still on the board because not only do I think he’ll make the team but he could really provide some nice depth going forward. Safety is also an option and we could always take a wide receiver as we’ve done in years past. This pick ends our ’09 draft! Looking forward to the season and eventually mocking again in 2010.

I pretty much have the same sentiments for this draft as I did the previous one. It is not one that's going to reshape the organization, and I don't see any of these guys being All-Pros, but I'd feel very good and comfortable with this draft as I see most of those guys making some sort of positive impact with this team in the near future. It fills holes at RT, CB, WR, and hopefully Stroughter could become a threat in the return game. Excellent work on these mocks. 8)

I agree, good job. I like a lot of those picks, especially the early ones, I'm not a fan of Iglesias, and I think he'll go a little earlier than that, but if he's there, I won't be complaining.

In my 2 round mock draft I have the Vikings taking Eben Britton and Alphonso Smith(I honestly think ther is a shot he makes it to us).

Haha. Good thing I wasn't in the war room this weekend. A few of my picks were way off!! I mean Macho fell well into day two and two of my guys weren't even drafted! Oh well, I'll do better next year.

Don't feel bad. This was an extremely hard draft to predict. The first round value went pretty much as expected(other than a few guys falling like usual though), and the 2nd was pretty good for the most part, but after that it was a crap shoot. Guys who were expected to go real late went in the 3rd and 4th, and guys who were expected to go in the 3rd/4th went in the 6th or later, if they were even drafted at all.

I'm going to put together a recap of our draft this weekend. Hopefully I'll have it posted by Sunday night....
