It's sounding like Jeff Garcia is about to reach a deal with Oakland. Word has it they are going to let him compete for the job. Does he really have a chance?

i saw this rumor and it upset me. still secretly hoping the skins make a run at him although its probably unlikely.

He'd be a better fit in Washington and there WCO. Jamarcus Russel is the future in Oakland.

I approve of the move if it happens. We shouldn't just hand the job to Jamarcus and actually make him work for it this season.

As a Chiefs fan I hope this is true.

I was surprised that he wasn't linked to the Jets this off season. I understand that Rex is sticking with his guys (or drafting someone), but I expected a lot of Garcia to NYJ rumors.

Of course he does, Jeff Garcia is unstoppable. He didn't go bald, he became more aerodynamic.

I don't think JaMarcus Russell is too great a fit there. I bet Garcia would do a better job in Oakland. And I agree with Splat420. :P

Whenever Rich Gannon covers a Raiders game, he secretly wishes he was still playing.

The guy knows how to win games so he always has a chance. Pick your poison, though - cannon arm & terrible accuracy with limited mobility or accuracy & mobility with no arm strength.

Haha. It would be pretty legit if he got into coaching though. I think he was made for that kind of thing.

Agreed. He started screaming when commentating on the Bucs vs. Raiders game because Garcia didn't see an open receiver. "He's wide open on the left sideline! He missed him!"

I like Garcia and think he can still be a good starter in this league, but why the hell are we even talking with him? We drafted JR to be the guy (regardless of how much anyone likes/dislikes it) so why bring in another starter? Russell has nothing to gain by sitting on the bench at this point, he needs to play. I doubt Garcia wants to be a backup, and unless Al is already off the JR bandwagon we should be focusing on other areas of the team.

If given a fair shot he would easily beat out Russell.

That's what I'm afraid of...I don't want a Kerry Collins/Vince Young type of situation going on with our 1st overall pick and a 40 year old with a noodle for an arm. I would have been all for the move two years ago, and I would be fine with it now if JaMarcus wasn't on the roster, but there's a 50/50 chance that this could really screw Russell's development.

Aye, i would have thought the Jets would have been a great fit. He would allow them to be more competitive this season than anyone currently on the roster I feel...

JaMarcus Russell is 23 years old, picking up a vet for him is great. I really do believe Russell will turn into a good QB but you guys need to let him grow. Last year was virtualy his rookie season and he did alright on a bad team.

As for Garcia, if he gets the starting job, we might have a chance at winning the AFC West. If Russell works on his game and gets used to his WR's then I think we will be good

If Jeff Garcia is a challenge to Russell then the Raiders wasted a pick on him. Garcia is done he has a rag arm.

I hope Garcia comes to the team with the attitude that he wants to help J-Rock with his game rather than a "Me vs Him" type of situation. If Garcia comes in as a mentor I think he could really make a difference to Jamarcus' development as a QB, but having him compete against Jamarcus could be detrimental to the team.

Let's face it, Jeff Garcia is the ideal backup. He's a complete change of pace from Russell, and if JaMarcus were to get hurt, we'd still be in good shape. I wanted to bring in Garcia years ago, but it is a great idea to bring in a QB with the work ethic of Garcia, hopefully it will rub off on the big man from Mobile. Seriously, we needed a veteran presence at that position on the roster.

I don't like this for the Raiders, Jeff Garcia is not going to sit back and be the mentor he's going to compete to be the starter, thats the type of guy Garcia is plain and simple.

This is going to be detrimental to JaMarcus's development if he loses out in camp, and he was looking pretty good ever sine the Raiders benched Kwame Harris's garbage ass.

I guess that's good news, kinda sounded like he was willing to be a mentor. There were a few times he hinted that he thinks he can still be the guy and compete, but I hope he remains a backup.

He's a much better fit for LT, and the Raiders have a glaring hole their so he can just switch there.

I personally like the signing. Garcia is decent starter and a great back up to have. If Russell gets hurt or acts up, we have a reliable QB that can probably get us close to a playoff birth.

I really hope Russell can take his game to the next level. Improving the oline, having 3 good RB's and some young WR's Russell should improve like he was the last few games. We need to pound the ball as much as possible and take advantage of 1v1's on playaction passes.

Russell hasn't had a veteran QB to show him the ropes to this point in his career. We could really use another leader too.

NFL Live said the Raider braintrust, such as it is, werent confident they could get the full 16 games from Russell.

Russell's development has always been way, way behind the curve since his rookie camp holdout, & they've had to shuffle the front 5 o-line so many times I've lost count b/c Gallery is looking like a bust, they made do at center with a 9ers retread on his last legs literally, & now gone Kwame Harris has never been able to pass block in the NFL, ever....This thing with Russell & the overall low talent base & other personnel problems like McFadden's ball control issues, etc, have all taken a back seat to the chaos in their front office that's still ongoing -- this is the Raider Nation we're talking here sportsfans, the worst-managed team in the league, & when quizzed on this clusterf*ck the running joke here in the Bay Area is They Will Get the Ownership Certificate When They Pry It From Al's Cold Dead Hands... sad but true.

Anyway all these shortcomings were exposed last yr. when their offense was dead last in the NFL for many wks. & Russell looked confused out there. I think Russell is on notice right now to hit the ground running as he should have done his rookie yr, & they brought in Bay Area Garcia to light a fire under him. I never bought into the myth of a veteran QB mentoring a younger one, but I do believe a veteran threatens an underachieving young QB's starting job -- pushing him is better behavior mod than playing carrot & donkey with Russell.
