View Full Version : Lions to draft Stafford

The Lions are currently planning to draft Georgia QB Matthew Stafford with the No. 1 overall pick, according to Profootballtalk.com.
It was reported elsewhere within the last month that Detroit planned to take Jason Smith, so realize that this isn't absolute. GM Martin Mayhew wants to make sure his No. 1 pick has signed a contract before the draft and Stafford's agent, Tom Condon, typically drives a hard bargain. While Stafford certainly seems like the logical choice, we still have over two weeks to go. Apr. 8

I'll believe it when I see it. But really, the only way the Lions can screw this draft up is if they go for Crabtree and Britt in the first.

If you were the Lions and you had decided on Jason Smith, wouldn't you have made sure you got Jay Cutler?
The fact that they did not go this way pretty much forces them to take Stafford if you ask me

But CJ, Crabs, and Britt would make any QB look good ;)
No surprise that Stafford is the top pick (assuming the reports are correct).

That would be a ridiculously good set of receivers on one team. Not saying it could ever come anywhere close to happening, just that it would be a crazy amount of talent at one position.

If you were the Lions, I think you'd find it pretty hard to make sure you got Cutler without giving away your #1...

If the lions go with a OT 1st overall that means they would have passed on Stafford, Sanchez, Cutler, and Cassell. I don't see how they could go into the offseason with 3 high picks and pass on all those QB's for whatever the reason may be.

This is kind of a must pick now with Cutler in the division. After missing out on him they are almost forced to try and find a franchise QB, although they should probably let him sit awhile and learn before being throw in Jared Allen's arms haha.

First, I don't think they would have to give away #1... they have #20 to deal.
Second, if I were the Broncos or most any team, I would not want the #1 overall pick. It's virtually impossible to trade out of and the contract is punitive.

Good move on the Lions part, Dare I say no more bonehead picks for the Lions in the top 10?

This is what they should do.
Draft Matthew Stafford with the first pick and let him groom under Culpeper for a year like Carson Palmer. Draft a OL with the 20th pick and fill other needs in the later rounds.

While I expect them to draft Stafford, I don't buy these reports yet. The Lions have done a great job of keeping everything private. I doubt anything gets out from their end. If anything, it'd be Tom Condon letting word out that the he and the Lions are close to a deal.

Martin Mayhew is a former Skin who played for Joe Gibbs and has an idea how great teams are built.
Stafford right now is better than anyone they have, and if they just had a QB who could manage to get the ball to Calvin Johnson 6 - 10 times a game, the Lions will score points.
Mayhew will address the lines, which I'm sure as a Gibbs protege will be his next task, just not with the 1st overall pick.

That's my reasoning as well, Schwartz has came out and said how important it was to upgrade the QB position, and while he did say "there are other means then through the draft", he missed the boat on trading for Cutler and Free Agency so what's left? I highly doubt Sanchez and Freeman will be there at 20, and moving up would be stupid to me, you need those picks and if you want a QB just take Stafford.
I actually think Stafford and Beatty would be a very good 1st round, but they need to address the defensive side of the ball also...I'm just worried that if Stafford plays this year he'll end up getting killed.
I really really don't think we'll take an OT in Round 1.. or at all in this draft, even.. I can see us picking a Guard, but that's about it.

He's used to crappy offensive lines in front of him, they just need to dumb down the offense a little, hand the ball off and throw on 1st and 2nd downs. I'd let him sit for half a season but i wouldnt baby him.

he need to have his will and soul broken, like Carr. But then when he is a pile of mush, you re-build him to be better, stronger, faster. It always works, look at Manning.
I hope this report is true.

Been Speculation that the Lions are going to take Stafford for a few months now. If they see him as a Franchise Quarterback, then I think they have to select him.

Good decision if it's true, they need to start somewhere. More importantly, they need to invest in Calvin's future.

If the Lions can trade 20 for two+ picks in the first 3 rounds, they should.

You can also lose rep for saying you are Mark Sanchez...good lesson to learn.
The Lions were as ******** as ever in missing out on Cutler and Cassel and a couple other options, so they're probably stuck taking a QB #1 overall. Choosing between Stafford and Sanchez is not going to be easy.

I have been keeping it a secret, but it's time to let my fellow Draft nerds know: Stafford is not the only pick in the Draft that's a lock. It's a fact that Mohamed Massaquoi will not fall past the Lions 4th round pick. If he's there, he's a Lion. He will compete with Bryant Johnson to be the #2 WR for the Lions and at worst will be the #4 WR as a rookie.
Ok, it's actually not a lock, but I'd say both Stafford and Massaquoi as Lions next year stands a pretty good chance of happening. YHIHF

CARMAZZI! I had a friend who was obsessed with him because he was like a 38 overall in Madden, haha. He'd build these awesome teams just to have Carmazzi play QB for them in franchise mode.
