looks like Jeremy Roenick is calling it quits.
Sad to see JR go. For the most part I enjoyed his antics. It's too bad he never got to win a cup. I always hate seeing guys who have great careers and play 20 seasons and never get a ring.

Wings signed Patrick Eaves . . . BOOOSH?
Rangers choose not to give nearly 4 millions to Nikolai Zherdev, who's now an unrestricted free agent. Should be interesting to see how much he'll get. Over/under 4.25M?
Not everyday you see a young, very talented player hit the unrestricted free agent market following arbitration. It'll be interesting to see which teams with significant cap room will try to make a move this late into the offseason. You gotta believe KHL teams will be interested as well.

He also wasn't invited to Russia's Olympic camp. Certainly an interesting situation with his free agency. There are a couple of legit top-6 wingers waiting to picked up off the street in August.
Roenick NEEDS to stay prominent in hockey media. I'll still say that I'll miss him. An American great.
Wings signed Patrick Eaves . . . BOOOSH?
i read an article in which Nill talks about how he has loads of untapped potential and they are hoping for a Cleary/Samuelsson situation. The article also says the wings are left with 1.5-2 mil in cap space (accurate?) and that Nill is in talks with a few guys but they are asking for too much right now. That makes me wonder who they may be talking to. I guess someone who values themselves as a 2 mil a year guy and the Wings want it down to 1. Maybe Bertuzzi?

Eaves blows. Nothing more than a soft 3rd liner who is average defensively and can get around 10 goals a year. I wouldn't want him on the Sharks ever.
he may have not done much in his career other than his rookie year but that year allows us to say he has potential. detroit will give him a chance to succeed and hopefully he makes the best of it. Cleary and Sammy weren't too highly thought of before they came to detroit and now look. plus it's a 1 year deal 500k. no big if hes only a 4th liner.

I saw plenty of him in Ottawa and Jensen is right. Unless something drastically changed while he was in Carolina you shouldn't expect much from him.

I saw plenty of him in Ottawa and Jensen is right. Unless something drastically changed while he was in Carolina you shouldn't expect much from him.
And considering Carolina has had two ***** coaches since he's been there I doubt he's gotten any tougher...something Detroit could use. Eaves has been given opportunities to succeed, and he's failed. Sure you can say he has potential, but I think just about everybody except Red Wings fans now know that he won't be anything more than a soft 3rd liner. There's no reason Detroit fans could even justify Eaves being/becoming a good player. Just because some players come to Detroit and get better (I wouldn't exactly call Samuelsson a good player, Cleary maybe) doesn't mean they all will.
all im saying is they wouldn't have signed him unless they really thought they could get something out of him. yes i know odds are they won't and he'll be a soft 3rd liner. im aware he hasn't done jack in his career so far. all i was saying is there is a chance he could turn it around. he's only 25. plus i think cleary happens to be a very solid player. you can't find too many guys that will play 3rd/4th line duty as hard as they'll play 1st/2nd line and not complain. cleary works his ******* ass off. maybe he'll take eaves under his wing lol
i really wasn't trying to be a red wings homer i just was looking towards the positives of the signing.
Wings assistant GM Jim Nill said in today’s Free Press that they want to get Eaves “in a structured environment. We look at him as a Dan Cleary.”
Zherdev could be a nice addition for someone.
Up until now, he has only played for defensive-minded teams. It would interesting to see what he could do playing for a team that gives him more freedom.
I think he is capable of putting up nice numbers, skill is there.

Eaves cost 500K. For that price, I'll take my chances in hopes the Wings can return his production to the 20 goals he had a couple years back.
We resurrected Samuelsson and Cleary before. This seems like it could be a similar scenario.
But again, its 500K.

Don't be naive. I know who he is. And I know that he's scored 20 goals in the past, but has not lived up to that lately.

Patrick Kane was arrested ah.
Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane and his cousin were arrested early Sunday morning for assaulting and robbing a cab driver in Buffalo, according to several news sources in that city.
According to a police report, the 20-year-old Kane and his cousin James M. Kane, 21, were arrested around 5am et after allegedly punching the cabbie after he said he did not have proper change for their trip fare.
The report says the cab fare was $13.80 and the Kanes handed the driver $15. He claims he had only $1 change and was not in possession of another twenty cents to give back. According to the police report, both Kanes took their money back and punched the cabbie in the face and head.
Both men have been charged with second-degree robbery, fourth-degree criminal mischief and theft of services.
Kane, a Buffalo native, had attended a press conference with the mayor earlier in the evening to announce funding for a local rink.
WGRZ.com says the driver appeared to have suffered cuts to his face as well as damage to his glasses.
Unbelievable re: Kane. Unbelievable.
Btw here's the TSN link. (http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=287230)

I lost all hope in the kid last year, and reportedly he asked Burke to trade him once they landed Gustavsson, so I'm fine with this. Especially with Burke signing Joey McDonald as insurance.

Can't believe he would punch out a cabby over 20 cents. He can't give the guy a tip? I wonder what EA is going to have to say about him on NHL 10. I remember when Heatly got in to legal trouble (though it was worse) he was taken off the case part way through production and replaced by sakic.

This is one more way of Burke communicating to the fanbase that “The Monster” is our goalie now and into the future. The writing was on the wall from day one of the signing.
Pogge faced too much pressure too soon in front of a terrible team defensively when the kid clearly wasn’t prepared for the big stage. A lack of confidence was most certainly an issue as well. Hopefully this turns out well for both parties involved, although it’d hurt if Pogge came into his own on a different team. It’s an all too familiar sight for Leafs’ fans, especially in regards to our youth.
It’s crazy to think that we once had two of the most promising goaltending prospects in hockey and all they could fetch us were Andrew Raycroft and a ‘conditional late round draft pick’.

And it's also why I would keep Toews over Kane any day of the week. I think Kane tends to be overrated. Kid has sick offensive skills but he doesn't forecheck and he doesn't get back on defense. Toews is a two way player with incredible intangibles.

Update on the Kane story;
Reports are that the cabbie locked the Kane's in the car until they paid. The Kane's got upset and asked for their tip back ($1.20). Cabbie didn't have the $.20 and they snapped.
Regardless of whether or not they were locked in the car, it still gives you no right to sucker punch an elderly man from behind, choke him, beat him up, and then take his money. Sad thing is the Kane's may get off on some of the charges because the cabbie locked them in.
I can guarantee they were both drunk as well which didn't help the situation (in Kane's case he's still under the legal drinking age).
I personally think a 20-30 game suspension (possibly higher) should be in order for Kane this year. At some point you have to send a message that this type of behavior is unacceptable, especially when the culprit is the face of an organization.

What, because I'm a Hawks fan I'm full of ****?
I've never really liked Kane all that much. He's extremely talented and fun to watch, but he's also a ***** on the ice and doesn't play two-way hockey. Plus his personality as a whiner when things don't go his way is annoying.
And Geo, Buffalo cab drivers sometimes lock doors before customers pay their fare because college kids have a tendency to jump out before they pay, so this is the cab driver's way of making sure they get their money. This is what the victim's attorney said in an interview. He also said that it's unfortunate his client didn't know who Kane was.
Money and fame can buy you freedom, and Kane will likely get off with community service and probation. Kane deserves to be punished by the law and by the league to the full extent and it likely will not happen. I refuse to sacrifice integrity for winning especially in this regard, and if Kane gets a big suspension you won't hear any complaining from me.

It's what should happen in my eyes, not what will happen. I'm pretty sick and tired of athletes abusing their status. Kane reportedly said "you don't know who I am, you don't know who you're messing with."
Kane will likely get a slap on the wrist from the league, maybe a couple game suspension, and a fine. If this happened to you or me, we'd be in jail facing felony charges. But since it happened to a kid with immense talent, he'll get off with practically nothing because he can buy his freedom.
I could care less if he's the face of our franchise to be honest, what he did is inexcusable and he deserves to be punished. Cool, you think I'm full of ****, but that's my view on it.

He's not really what we need, either. But there's some sense of euphoria in the city right now. He'll probably be no better than Hecht was this past year, which was also pretty brutal, but people love it because they only have fond memories of Grier and it means we're actually signing somebody that can play most nights.
Puts a hold on the Kennedy/Gerbe call ups, which can be a good thing, but I could stand to see Kennedy playing on our 3rd line.
Seems like we have our 21 skaters, now, if we sign Stafford.

Wow, the Penguins' AHL team should be stacked next season. Exciting.
Most of the top prospects will play there next season and it'll make for an interesting season to follow.
I hope certain players step up and make contributions in Pittsburgh.
I think there might be one more forward spot open. There might be an interesting battle in camp for that spot.
I hear Jeffries and Johnson have looked impressive.

His production is good enough that, if he is possibly being squeezed into Detroit's budget, you shouldn't consider it cashing in from 7 years ago.

Pat isn't the problem. A lack of veteran leadership is the problem and that goes far beyond just him.
Foppa's making a return in the SEL, and if he can stay injury-free until next year (which we all know he won't) will be aiming for a NHL comeback.

We traded a ****** players for an interesting young defenseman who has improved every year (that I've seen, maybe Sharks fans can vouch for me) and a veteran depth defenseman which we sorely lacked. I don't think we actually sign Schneider now.
We're about 1 million over the cap, but improved our team immensely.
From what I heard of San Jose, Ehroff regressed enormously last year (at least defensively) and most wanted him out of town.

Ehh. Sort of. The first two months he played pretty well. The rest of the season was very meh. He's pretty average defensively. He has a hard shot though. But his knock was always that he couldn't get that shot on net. He improved that aspect last year as he would take a shorter windup, sacrifice some velocity and get a more accurate shot on goal. It worked at first, but again, it regressed as the season went on.
I don't think most Sharks fans wanted him gone, rather we just kind of expected it as the team is in SERIOUS cap trouble.
In the end, that deal is a very good one for Vancouver though. My only hope is that this deal is part of another deal for the Sharks cause the value isn't anywhere close to even from the Sharks perspective.

Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks President and General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that goaltender Roberto Luongo has agreed to terms on a 12 year contract extension through the 2021-2022 season.
“Today is a very exciting day for the Canucks organization,” said Mike Gillis. “Roberto Luongo is the leader of our hockey team; he is in the prime of his playing career and has a tremendous desire to make the Canucks a championship team. His leadership, competitiveness and character are what this team will represent for many years to come.”
“This is a great day for me and my family,” said Roberto Luongo. “I love playing in a passionate hockey city like Vancouver and along with my teammates I am committed to doing everything I can to help make this a championship team.”

In the neighbourhood of $65 million, which comes out to a $5.333 million dollar cap hit. Not sure yet on the NMC, yet to be released.
Still, it's a perfect contract. He makes the same cap hit as one Shawn Horcoff.

He should. They badly need scoring.
The recent development:
The Leafs trade their 2011 3rd round pick and Calgary's 2011 2nd round pick (from the Stralman/Primeau deal) to get back Toronto's 2010 2nd round pick from the Chicago Blackhawks. (http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=290103)

Alright, I want you guys to think. What qualities make a great defenseman in today's NHL?
PACKmanN

Soft hands, being able to move the puck around, and having a good shot from the point.
Soft hands, being able to move the puck around, and having a good shot from the point.
That only makes a decent offensive d-man.
A great defenseman needs a combination of so many things, ranging from near-perfect positionning and excellent man-to-man abilities to good passing skills/vision (especially important for the breakout pass) and an above-average, accurate shot and, of course, good skating and acceleration.
Size and strength are always a plus too.
I don't think soft hands are a prerequisite for a great d-man at all, though it is always welcome indeed.
SuperMcgee
09-06-2009, 04:17 PM
I'd just suggest watching Lidstrom play, but I'll lend my thoughts.
Ideally you'd like to start with great size, with all the physical and reach benefits that come with it. Smooth skating in all directions, patience, a heavy shot, good breakout passes, anticipation, solid/hard checking, great positioning in your zone. An ability to join the rush and willing but sensible shot blocking, but you have to be careful with both of those. Great vision and playmaking from the point. All of these work toward making a great defenseman.
PACKmanN

I don't think size really matters, but it is always something anyone wouldnt mind having, because of the type of game it has now become.
IMO, teams value defensemen's offensive skillset then they would to their defensive skills. Also, by softhands i meant was that they have the ability to move the puck around with the players around them and keeping the puck in the other teams' zone. If a defensemen can do that, he could get extra mintues.

Cheechoo hahahahaha!
Ouch. Thornton could already make Cheechoo of all people get 50 goals. Could be nasty with Heatley.

Awesome, ******* awesome. I was worried when I heard all the Marleau reports the past few days because he's my favorite Shark, but he has a NTC. Cheechoo was worthless the past few years while making $3M per and Michalek was overpaid as well (making $4.3M) despite being young and talented with potential. Our PP is going to be a nightmare for the rest of the league.
Heatley - Thornton - Marleau
Boyle - Blake

Don't waste your money. Heatley's a douche and the Sens third jerseys suck.

**** yeah. Great job by the Sharks. Michalek is fast as hell and pretty solid all around, but he just doesn't finish consistently enough. Heatley is a pure scorer which has been sorely lacking as of late. Cheechoo is just too slow for the new NHL. Loved both those guys so I hope they do well in Ottawa.

Maybe if it said Senators, but the fact that it just says Sens makes me hate them.

Yes you do sarf.
Awesome trade for the Sharks. I've never really liked Michalek all that much. He's a good 2nd line player, there's just something about him that stuck out to me that I didn't like. Cheechoo blows and the 2nd rounder will likely be very low.

Hooray for Stafford signing.
Any other decent RFA still unsigned besides Dubinsky and Kessel?
And somebody really ought to sign Dennis Seidenberg.
Alright, an update for the Leafs' fans in this thread.
RW named our top four defensemen on what appears to be an overstocked blue line for this season. Our first pairing is anticipated to be Kaberle and Komisarek, while the other Beauchemin and Schenn.
This leaves Van Ryn, White, Exelby, Finger, and Frogren battling for three jobs on the roster. Definitely something to keep an eye on as camp continues.

We better not spend all of our cap on the first line, the Sens already did that.

I love that Top 4. Also I am penciling in Exelby too, I think there's a very good chance he makes it as he is one of Burke's guys and brings the kind of physicality Burke wants.

Yeah I really like Exelby. If it were up to me that 3rd pairing would be Exelby and White.

He still ought to be signed. Still a good 3rd line player, I believe. He might be disappointed with the drop in ice time, but a lot of teams could use someone like him in their bottom 6.

Crosby has three points tonight. Scoring championship? I think so.
(Yes I know it's only preseason. I am kidding, chill.)
Eric Tangradi, from what I have read, looked good. I expect him to be a player for us late this year or next season.
Kunitz also scored two goals. I think a full season with Sid would do him good.

was at the first preseason game tonight. it was a split squad game with phoenix, so i was able to see alot of our kids, like hickey, bernier, loktionov (so so good), teubert, schenn, clifford. :)
i was also able to see our first line in action. kopi, smyth and justin williams, they got chops.

I did. It's a lot slower, and more difficult when you're facing the computer. Looks nice though. And the first person fighting is fun.

I really like NHL 10. A lot more realistic and they eliminated the glitch goals so it's harder to score. Download the demo if you want to check it out.
