Discuss the draft here. I am excited to see who slides and who rises up the board. We will have to wait forever in a day to pick, though.

Hines

I reallllly hope we don't draft Unger at 32. He is a solid player and I would like him, but not at 32. I would rather have Mack or Wood than Unger.

My final 5 on who we can pick are:

Alex Mack
Eric Wood
Jarron Gilbert
Ziggy Hood
Top corner available

To be honest, I'm not worried about the first round.

It's what we do in the 2nd here that will make or break it. Will we trade up to get a stud, or keep our fingers crossed that one of "our guys" (i.e. Moala, Gilbert, Wood) will still be there at #64?

I'll be dialed in on that 2nd round where you become more fixated about each and every pick (guy) coming off the board. Very intense. And I f*cking love it.

I don't think the Hood predictions are a smokescreen. I'm guessing we get him at 1.32 and trade up for OL in two (Wood, most likely).

Hood + Wood would be a real good (and real safe) first day imo.

Would like one of these 7....
Mack
Wood
Unger
Gilbert
Britton
Brace
Hood

Trading up in the 2nd would be great...two of that group above would be tremendous.

04-25-2009, 04:50 PM
WHat would you think if we traded down with the browns? And I also think that GIlbert won't be there at 64, I think he will get picked up by the panthers.

5 picks away and I like these 7 still out there...Britton, Wood, Unger, Gilbert, Rey, Hood and Brace. (Don't want a CB or WR)

Strongside
04-25-2009, 06:07 PM
Wood's gone. Britton is still there. Rey is still there. Butler/Smith are still there. Gilbert too. We're are going to get a real quality player. I would like any of those. I definitely wouldn't mind Unger either.

I think we could trade up in the 2nd for sure.

JonasBlane

Would love to land Britton! I didn't think we could grab a starting type RT at our pick.

WHAt?????? Ziggy Hood???

04-25-2009, 06:32 PM
Ziggy Hood is the pick. I like it. I was just glad it wasn't Unger. I wished we would've gotten Darius Butler, though.

I'm not a fan of him as a 3-4 DE...

But at least we're the World Champions Superbowl Champion.

Whatever. I have faith in our FO.

THav916
04-25-2009, 06:38 PM
Woulda preferred Britton or Unger. Rey was tempting. And I thought Hood, Gilbert or Brace were the three dlineman. I'm very glad the Steelers didn't go with a CB or WR, as many people on here thought they would.

CDub
04-25-2009, 06:41 PM
I like the pick - think of him as a more athletic Aaron Smith.

Jakey
04-25-2009, 06:58 PM
I like him allot...he's a beast...great hand fighter...nice speed...tenacious...strong...good passrush...nasty...leader. Typical Steelers pick.

Wouldn't mind Macho in rd 2.

Hines
04-25-2009, 07:01 PM
I really could see Hood pushing Eason or Kirschke off the roster and being in the rotation. I really like the pick.

I also read that the Hines deal would save us money and we could get Roscoe Parrish tomorrow.

THav916

After looking more into him I actually like him a lot too.

Hoods a great pick. Hell be starting in keisels spot next year. I wanna land OL in the 2nd we need depth desperately.

CDub
04-25-2009, 08:30 PM
I could go for Macho - Sean Smith - Jarron Gilbert - Kraig Urbik in the 2nd. As of pick 59 they're all still there.

Hines
04-25-2009, 08:33 PM
Gilbert, Sean Smith, and Beatty for me for the second. I hope we get one of those three.

No way he starts over Keisel first year. He'll definitely see time in the nickle package/passing downs though. He's pretty much already our most explosive lineman. I can't help but feeling he's more of a gapper than a 5-tech though.

I have no idea who we pick here.

Hines

Also, what's the deal on Ziggy? Is he going to be able to man the middle for us, or will he be a DE?

whos still available that the steelers may target?

I think it would be plausible to score Meredith, Macho and Gilbert all in the 3rd.

Hines
04-25-2009, 09:11 PM
I could see Rashard Johnson, Mike Thomas, DJ Moore, Mike Wallace, AQ Shipley, Gerald Cadogan, Derrick Williams, Duke Robinson, or Jamon Meredith as our pick. Maybe Caldwell or Gilbert. Should be interesting.

THav916
04-25-2009, 09:14 PM
That's an average trade in my opinion. Two 3rd's for a 2nd and a 4th.

Target-Jarron Gilbert, Jamon Meredith, AQ Shipley are three of my favorite guys among other lineman (Alex Magee, Sammie Lee Hill, Fenuki Tupou, Troy Kropog, Antoine Caldwell, Duke Robinson, Kraig Urbik) still out there. Also a handful of CB's, Macho Harris and Coye Francies are two of my faves. And WR's like Mike Wallace and Brandon Tate. And at safety I like Rashad Johnson, David Bruton and Chris Clemons.

THav916
04-25-2009, 09:15 PM
Rumors swirling the Steelers were trying to trade up for Max Unger but couldn't get anything to work. Very disappointing if true.

Steelersfan4life
04-25-2009, 09:16 PM
We also have an extra 5 and 7 so we could use those to move up high for Gilbert and still have 2 third rounders :) I think we set ourselves up nicely to be very active in getting good players in the 3rd. However with that said we really screwed up by missing out on Britton, Rey, Gilbert, and others. We'll have to see what they can pull off in the 3rd round.

Jakey
04-25-2009, 09:18 PM
I know people arent that high on Duke Robinson round here...but he'd be an upgrade over what we've got atm, and would be great value in the 3rd. Other than him...i'll be looking for Macho Harris, Mike Mickens, Jarron Gilbert and AQ Shipley. I can see us targeting them if possible.

Strongside
04-25-2009, 09:20 PM
3. DJ Moore/Macho Harris
3. Antoine Caldwell/Duke Robinson
3. Louis Murphy
5. Sammie Lee Hill
5. Fenuki Tupou
6. Antonio Appleby
7. Frank Summers
7. Trimmane Goddard

That'd be cool.

Seems like all the players I like go to teams I don't like.
Mack, Robiskie to Browns. Oher to Ravens. Brace, Butler to Patriots. Rey to Bengals. McBath (even though it was a reach), Smith to Broncos.

I love Gilbert, but I'd say if they wanted him, they woulda taken him, so I wouldn't count on them then suddenly trying hard to trade back up and get him.

Waaaaaaaay too early to say we really screwed up. Gotta trust the Steelers more than any of us writing on a message board. Let the draft play out my man.

This is going to be a boom or bust trade...

It's risky but if they end up with 2 of Glibert, Mickens, Moore, Robinson, Herman Johnson, or Cadogen, I'd be happy.

Like someone said earlier, could have had Britton/Gilbert...would've been very happy.

How can you guys be excited about the 3rd round? You want more Anthony Smith's, Willie Reid's and Trai Essex'? Our best drafting takes place in the 1st and 2nd.

And we blew it in my opinion. I like Hood, but not the value. And I thought we'd make up for it in the 2nd with Gilbert or D.J. Moore.

Why are you so damn negative about everything?

I personally think the Hood pick is excellent. He doesn't have the potential like Gilbert, but he doesn't have the bust factor. I personlly would've chosen Butler or Britton over Hood, but Hood is a great choice.

I think Duke Robinson is going to be a PIttsburgh Steeler tomorrow.

I'm starting to see the trends in who Tomlin and Colbert are targeting early. Hood, Mendenhall, Timmons: they are all explosive, excellent athletes, coachable with no quit at all.

I'm not sure how well Hood is going to translate to our scheme but I said the same thing when we drafted Timmons.

Great players transcend scheme.

Glad to see the Steelers pick Ziggy in the first round, good luck to him in the future!

Some guys who I think we should consider with our thirds:

Rashad Johnson - High football IQ and a natural leader, can be molded into a good compliment to Polamalu.

Duke Robinson - Arguably the best run-blocking guard in the draft, Duke would be an upgrade over Stapleton. Taking him in the third would be great value for a guy who was thought to be the best at his position.

Jamon Meredith - Guy is a good O-Line guy who actually has some versatility, as he's played both tackle and guard in college.

Jarron Gilbert - Yes, we already took Hood, but an athletic DE in this round would give us the pair we need for the next years. He's got a lot of upside, but wouldn't make as close an immediate impact as Ziggy will.

D.J. Moore - A good cornerback, although a bit short. He's probably the best player left at his position though, and we definitely need another CB if Townsend leaves.

Lawrence Sidbury JR. - This is a guy I'd love to get. He ran a 4.64 40, which is pretty good for a DE, and he's a good pass-rusher. Plus, he's got a lot of potential. He'd switch to OLB for us.

Michael Johnson - The guy is a physical freak and some believe he could be succesful as a 3-4 OLB. He's got great athleticism, speed, and agility, and could be molded into a great situational pass-rusher.

Louis Murphy - A 6'3 guy who runs a 4.43, Murphy could compete with Limas for the #3 spot. He can also take the hits in traffic.

Ramses Barden - The guy is 6'6 and is a red-zone nightmare for defenses. The guy is a great jumper who could work in short yardage situations.

Victor Harris - One of the most physical corners in the draft, he is supposedly a better fit for a zone scheme.

Jasper Brinkley - A 3-4 ILB who is a thumper, he'd be an ideal companion to Timmons in the future.

A.Q. Shipley - Could be taken late in the third to ensure we get the center that I think the team secretly coveted all along.

Scott McKillop - Another 3-4 ILB who could complement Timmons well. He's a tough guy and a hard worker, plus great football knowledge.

Coye Francis - Another good CB, he's got good speed, although he doesn't seem a Steeler type player. He would, however, be a good pickup late in the 3rd.

Mike Thomas - A WR who runs very fast and would be an ideal replacement for Nate Washington.

Derrick Williams - Similar to Thomas, but a bit taller.

Mr. Goosemahn

You guys will love Ziggy Hood, he is one of my favorite prospects in this draft. I knew he was going to see that 1st round...I am truly jealous, even though I crossed him off of my want list long ago because, it wasn't realistic for Dallas in their pick range. haha.

I don't remember where, but somewhere around the Steelers boards someone said that normally the guys we pick are invited to our facilities for a workout. This has been the second year in a row (maybe third) that the first round pick was not invited to the facilities, but simply had a short talk during the combine. Last year was the same with Mendenhall, we just talked to him at the combine. I think we should start looking more at who they talk to in the combine, as we give little importance to that. I remember Hood and Don Carey were the first players we talked to at the combine. Who knows, maybe we'll draft him too.

Hines

Not enough offensive lineman for you? I'm betting we should have taken at least 3 with our first picks, huh?

I think its good so far. Hood is a high motor guy and I think he will do well and add in some versitility in that we can add a 4 linemen package. We got a Guard/Tackle with Urbik, a deep threat/kick returner with wallace, and secondary depth with Lewis. We've hit our needs and have gotten some good players. I have no problems with it.

i have no problem with the players choosen. just the value at where they were chosen. hood could have been a second rounder, and if he was gone gilbert lasted to the 3rd, urbik would have lasted to the 4th. wallace is ok, but only because he has return ability, and lewis

i feel in the last few drafts the steelers went bpa and it has worked out damn good. so to target position bassed on need is an easy way to muck up your draft.

04-26-2009, 01:16 PM
Well its pretty hard to say how long a player would last after the fact or how the draft would have gone down if we did something differently. My opinion is if there is a player you like and want to take, then take him. Try to get the best value for him, but don't wait on a guy in the 3rd because you think he might make it to the 4th. If someone else takes him before you, then you just lost out on a guy you wanted and have to scramble to recover.

And really, we don't know what the steelers big board looks like, so they might have these guys rated higher than others do and followed through with their plan. It's worked for us so far, so I see no reason to knock it.

I dont know if you were watching this past season but we did just win our sixth superbowl, so I would have to say that it has worked just fine. I'm fine with BPA when the situation fits (much like last year) but you should be looking to fill needs. Thats what the steelers do. Build the team through the draft.

Love Ziggy, Like Urbik, Love Wallace, Like Lewis, LOVE Burnett, Like Summers ( I think he could have been had with a six or even a seven)

My top choices:

1. Gerald Cadogan- Athletic as hell, high character, strong competition
2. Mitch King- I've always liked King, just not in the 3-5 range that many had him in. I would spend a six on him in heartbeat. He's a football player, plain and simple, and as a back-up DE and special teams BEAST, he'd do exactly what was expected of him as a six
3. Gus Parrish, Joel Bell, Cornelius Lewis- Small-school tackle/guard projects with great upside
4. Brandon Gibson- Amazing route runner, solid hands, solid player, high character
5. Khalif Mitchell, Myron Pryor, Chris Baker, Zach Potter- More DL depth

Hines
04-26-2009, 03:35 PM
I think our plan is to move Kennan Lewis to FS in the long run. Burnett will stay at corner and develop into a dime/nickle corner, and Lewis could be our FS of the future, unless the staff is high on Mundy.

2 OL
2 DL
1 WR
1 CB
1 CB/FS
1 HB/FB

This is brilliant....with one more to add to the mix

who is the Cb/FS cause both i see as corners, Lewis is not a tackler.
Burnett is to short for FS.

I don't expect much out of Shipley and never did before we even drafted him. I see him just as another body for TC. Also seriously who said this is biggest steal of the draft.

Well aren't you in a bad mood today?

I would imagine anyone we get would have to be a big ST guy at this point, so I doubt it would be Baker. I'm thinking LB. Pure speculation though.

hahah i'm not just trying to keep it real. Don't want to be like the homers on NFL.com who say Maclin is the next coming of Boldin.

Shipley won the Rimington and is flat out nasty. The only reason he wasn't drafted earlier was because he is short. He tested great physically and mentally at the combine. I don't know if he's the biggest steal of the draft, but he definitely is a steal for the 7th round.

At worst he's a quality backup. I mean he has to be better than stapleton.

Keenan Lewis is the CB/FS. 6'1 205, not like he has to start as a rookie. I think he can easily develop into a CB or FS.

I'm really glad to see LaRod Stephens-Howling get drafted - good local guy from Pitt.

David Johnson - hmmm... maybe a 3rd stringer/ST guy.....maybe

Johnson is solid. People have talked about him as one of the best blocking TE's and we can use that. A little short so maybe more of a FB...which we could use. Let's face it, in the 5th and 7th rounds, it's not like you can count on Frank Summers and David Johnson both being great players. If one of them develops into a playable FB it's a positive. If they can both, especially while bringing different things to the table, even better.

I hope we look at Jason Watkins, Brian Toal, Brennan Southerland, Derek Kinder, Frantz Joseph, Julius Williams as UDFA's if they do not get selected. I also want Gerald Cadogan.

Its 6'0 205, ohhh yeah, but I don't think he has the physical mentality to develop into even a backup FS.

Damn why didn't we pick Joesph. Come on UDFA.
