Do you not believe in retiring a number?

Retiring a number is about respect, not the aesthetic appeal of it. I do agree, if a player is great the number he wore can be immortalized as his own, simply because you can't retire a name (what are you going to do, not draft / sign people with the last name Montana?).

So you don't think that it would look ugly if Peyton Manning wore number 99?

what would be ugly about it? Do the 9's look different on his jersey as opposed to the other player's who have 9's on their jerseys? It would look out of place maybe, but that's because a QB isn't allowed to wear 99 in the NFL (and that rule exists to make a referee's job easier / other technical reasons, not for some fashion statement).

I believe numbers can belong to players. But that's about the player, not the number. Peyton Manning has worn 18 since he entered the NFL (Maybe college too, I don't know his college number) which means yes, 18 looks "right" on him, in a sense that when I see the blue and white jersey with 18 on it I can instantly recognize that as Peyton Manning's jersey.

However, if Peyton Manning wore the number 17 since 1998, I wouldn't think that 17 looked weird/bad/ugly/stupid on him.

I'm not saying certain numbers look aesthetically better but there's still history behind certain combinations.

I agree, there is history to certain numbers. But then doesn't it excite you to have some different numbers build a little bit of history. Instead of having a billion QB's follow the Elway #7, just because it has some history, how about we give #3 some love. I can't remember the last time I saw a good QB using the #3.

Quarterbacks don't wear the number 1 anymore. Usually they wear 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 11, 12, 17, 18. I can't think of any Quarterbacks that wear the number 1 at this time. If I was a quarterback, I would wear the number 19 just to be different.

If a guy like Marcus Mason doesn't make the roster though, and after drafting Greene I think that will be the case, his college number becomes available. In his post-draft presser it seemed like he really didn't care what his number was though, as opposed to Sanchez who went about getting his #6 very quickly.

I don't think quarterbacks are allowed to wear #1 anymore. I read somewhere that #1 is only available to kickers and punters. QBs could wear any number between 2-19 though. The pic of Freeman with the #1 jersey is probably the standard 1st round pick jersey that a lot of teams use to introduce their new players.

The Nashville City Paper had them. It was combined with an article about former Titan Drew Bennett visiting the Browns, so it wasn't in the headline.

But, I found the link on TitansCentral, a privately run forum. Someone there made a thread listing them, and a poster later provided a confirmation link.

Maybe a Colts team forum has them?

Packers are more traditional when it comes to the numbers but in terms of people have unorthodox numbers for their position, it kind of bothers me at first when they are designated the number because I associate the player with their college number but after a while it grows on me. Like Desean Jackson, I always picked him as #1 but #10 has grown on me.

We associate players with their position and their style of play (speed WR, power backs, etc,.) and their college number so when they get drafted or get signed, the number doesn't look right at first but it will grow on you. I promise.

I actually don't mind 18 on WRs. It makes sense for him because 8+1 is 9 which was his college number. Also 9+9 is 18. I thought Donte Stallworth looked badass in it a couple years ago and he is a similar player to Stallworth, just with more upside and much better character.

That means all the 1st round WRs have numbers in the 10-19 range.

Heyward-Bey - 12
Crabtree - 15
Maclin - 18
Harvin - 12
Nicks - 18
Britt - 18

I don't think all of them will keep those numbers. A lot of rookie WRs wear numbers between 11 and 19 for the mini-camps only to start the regular season in the 80s.
