View Full Version : Brett FavreThe Comeback Part Two

The Legend
04-28-2009, 09:40 PM
Amid chatter that Brett Favre is contemplating coming out of retirement yet again, the Jets announced Tuesday evening that they have released the former Green Bay Packers great from the reserve/retirement list.
The move means that Favre is now free to sign with any team, if he wishes and the Jets wouldn't be owed any compensation because they no longer have his rights.

Favre's release from the Jets could pave the way for him to come back with the Vikings, the team he originally wanted to play for following his bitter divorce with Green Bay.

Last August, when the Packers traded Favre to the Jets, the deal mandated that the Jets would have to give up three first-round picks if they traded Favre to Minnesota or any other NFC North team.

When Favre announced his retirement in February, there was speculation that Cook had asked the Jets for his unconditional release so Favre could sign with another team if he so desired but Cook denied it at the time.

Thought I added it with the article, but I guess I didn't my bad.

Favre vs Packers & Bears on Prime Time would be nice. I watch football for Favre so I'm begging he comes back. I think he should wait for a big name to get injured. If Favre was a free agent when Tom Brady went down I think they would have called him in a heartbeat last year. Look at the playoff possible teams Colts, Patriots, Steelers, Chargers, Cowboys, Giants, Eagles, and Falcons all don't have back ups that could step in and lead there teams. Also this allows his arm to get more rest and he wouldn't have to play a full season. I don't think his arm can take a full season. If a big name QB gets injured near the end of the season he could step in and help. But if he doesn't plan to come back I really hope he atleast retires a Packer.

Because this move would not be a long term decision obviously so is it worth the gamble to pick up a guy who really did not have a great season last year and with questions remaining if he can compete at a high level?

I think Favre just needs to go away. Look we all know you love football but this will be the second straight season he has retired and then attemtped to make a come back. It's just getting really ******* old.

I would agree with that statement, but I really thought he'd get over it by now.

I really thought, with it being so fresh he wanted to kick the Packs butt last year but I figured as the year went on things would die down and he would slowly calm down about it since he moved on, we moved on. I guess I was wrong. I just don't see why he can be so mad at Ted Thompson. It's not as if the Packers said, you suck...we're going to pick up someone else. We had a developmental player and had money invested into him (not as much as he makes now :P) and he felt it was time for him to step up (which it was). Someone on tv made a good point I heard the other day, saying...that Green Bay gave him everything when he was there. If he threw an INT we would hate it but would move on and let it go because it was Brett Favre. I never thought that I'd say it but no one player is bigger than a team and in this case it's like he can't see that.

I think it could be a nice addition for the Vikings. Favre's arm could help free up defenses from stacking the box, thus allowing Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor better opportunities to run without having 8 men in the box. It seems like it could be a one year success plan. The defense is stacked and the offense is loaded at the skill positions. Don't you guys think that Darrell Bevell wouldn't mind working with Favre again?

According to a New York Daily News column by Gary Myers, a(nother) Favre return to the NFL would be motivated by his desire to get revenge on the Packers, the team that kicked him to the curb last spring in favor of Aaron Rodgers.

Writes Myers:

One NFL source insists Favre can't peacefully retire until he finds a way to get revenge on the Packers. He wants back into the NFC North so he can face the Packers twice. The Bears traded for Jay Cutler and the Lions drafted Matthew Stafford. Hello, Minnesota.

"Favre can't stand Green Bay," the source said. "He wants to play Green Bay and say, 'I told you so.' His bitterness is creating this. I think he's calling Minnesota. I think Minnesota is talking about this as we speak. You haven't heard the end of Favre. No way. He is bionic. As long as somebody will let him in, he will play."

Nah, it will be hilarious when Favre schools Rodgers. There will be a ******* riot amongst Packer fans. Favre will go from being one of the most beloved players from the last 20 years to being one of the most hated. I can respect that. These past few years have made me like Favre just a little bit. Favre's pulling a Roger Clemens, when he turned on Boston and went to New York! Next we'll be hearing about him using steroids and cheating on his wife with Amy McBride, Phil Mickelson's wife. Call it off Brett, call it off!

In all seriousness, I sure hope for his sake he doesn't embarrass himself. Aaron Rodgers was the better quarterback last year, and I would fully expect him to beat Favre (or at least outperform him) next season if they played.

I don't care if some people disagree or not, when he emerges from the tunnel of Lambeau Field in purple he will hear something he thought he would never hear, boos. You could argue that the Vikings could also use a QB to bomb it above the defense and open up lanes for AD, and Favre brings that in spades. I think that's closer to the direction they're trying to go in given their loyalty to Jackson, and their deep threat fascination (Berrian, Harvin, even Rice).

They had that last year and got to the playoffs, but at some point it's not enough. Teams want to get to the Super Bowl and if it means going with a turnover prone 40 year old over another game manager then what's wrong with that? They already know what they're going to get with the game manager.

Ehhh, I don't know on this. Favre didn't play too bad for 11 games last year so he's not washed up. He still can play fairly well at least Sage/Jackson level. Then he got hurt and tried to struggle through it. If he gets hurt, Minnesota is screwed because Brett is going to play come hell or high water. He is turnover prone but the guy can still play. Sage and Jackson are turnover prone too but Favres upside is more IMO. And Minnesotas D can handle some turnovers. Favre can do what he wants if he wants to play and Minnesota wants him go for it. It'll make the Vikings/Packers way more interesting too.

1. Favre needs to get the surgery, to get his shoulder healthy.

2. He needs to be in this for the full season, not just the two games against the Packers for revenge. Be fully committed to trying to win another championship.

He meets those two criteria, I don't see why he shouldn't play. His age is advanced relatively speaking, but Favre has obviously shown he's one of those rare freaks who can still compete at his age. And as long as you're not putting yourself at any further risk, why not play as long as you can. He'll never experience anything like football again for the rest of his life.

The one thing is that playing for the Vikings might hurt his Packers legacy, but I would think only for the short-term. In a few years' time, it will be smoothed over and the Packers faithful will flock to Canton when Favre is enshrined.

If Favre takes the Vikings to the Super Bowl the Pack will never forgive him. I've always thought they'd stay loyal but if ever there was a chance he could outright kill his legacy, this is it.

If he has success as a Minnesota Viking that won't kill his legacy. Would Packers' fans be upset? Of course but time heals all wounds and this would end up being a prime example.

i think ultimately time will heal for both sides, but I really lost respect for brett favre for his antics the past 2 offseasons. Brett is a person who should bleed yellow and green but he has shown that he is one of the biggest divas in the game of football.

One would have to do ALOT to destroy one's legacy, especially one as great as Favre's. Leading the vikes to a superbowl could be one of those things though....

please God, let ESPN talk about something other than Brett Favre. NFL Live these days is 30 minutes of "blah blah Brett Favre blah Favre, blah blah Michael Vick blah blah blah". Then they try the excuse that it's what we want to hear. Oh, the summer months. Favre can come back with his hurt old arm and have another crappy season.
