13 of USC's 22 losses came in 2000 and 2001. Since then, they're 82-9, have been in the NC hunt pretty much every year, and have absolutely dominated recruiting (legally or not :)).

For me it's OU, they have just been phenominal. They've choked a lot in big games recently, but they still won a title. The two Heisman QB's was great, and I think Adrian Peterson should have won it his freshman year (can't remember who actually won).

USC is a close 2nd though, they have been dominant

I'm going to go USC here but I could have just as easily gone with LSU. Florida has been far and away the best lately but they haven't sustained it(can't see how they won't), but if we're talking sustained success it has to be USC.

Race for the Heisman
05-08-2009, 11:46 PM
I said Ohio State, for several reasons. First, the poll doesn't ask for best team of the decade, merely 'team of the decade.' Second, between beating Miami in 02' to personally redefining the Big Ten into, as Kirk Herbstreit so colloquially put it, 'a JV league,' with losses to Florida and LSU in consecutive BCSNCG appearances, I think Ohio State is the most prominent team of the decade. Like how Time's person of the year isn't the best person, just the one who had the greatest impact.

With that said, my other choice would be USC, followed by Florida. USC has been consistently great, had three Heisman winners, been involved in its fair share of scandals, and generally is just a big deal. Florida would have it had they been more relevant earlier in the decade, as their resume from '06 onward is nothing short of stellar. I don't think Oklahoma or LSU compare.

1.) USC

Everyone Else.

It's not even really a question to me....the other teams mentioned have been good, no doubt, but USC has consistently been produced one of the most talented teams year in and year out and are always on the cusp of another national title.

Considering everything they've done in all aspects of college football (Recruiting, regular season, post-season, awards, draft prospects), I think it has to be USC.

USC

LSU
Florida

Well... doesn't the decade end this season, since it's 09-10?

If it does, then I'm reserving my vote, because Florida is the most likely National Champion of this group, and if you win 3 NC's in one decade, I don't care what the rest of the stats say, you're the best team of the decade.

Right now it's USC, LSU, UF, OU, OSU - the top three all have 3 titles, but USC has definitely been the most consistently dominant, and haven't they won like 6 Rose Bowls (or something crazy like that)?

I picked LSU beacause..

1) I'm a homer!
and
2) LSU has two crystal balls. In recent memory(since 2002) LSU and Florida series goes 4-3 with the nod to LSU.

I think when it comes to talent, USC is far and away the #1. But when it comes to winning it goes down to LSU and Florida. LSU being given the nod, because again.. I am a homer.

It comes down between LSU, Florida, and OU for me. The reason being this: LSU and Florida have 2 BCS Championships. OU has been to four national championships. I don't care if you've lost the game, you've still been there four times.

And for all the hype USC has had you would have thought they would have done more with the talent they put on the field. Sure, their in the running every year, but so is LSU, Florida, Ohio State, and Oklahoma. And more times than not, USC does something to screw themselves out of getting into the title game.

So, USC has one split title and one BCS title. Then you have OU with one. Yes, they've been four times but their like the Buffalo Bills of college football. They can make it their, they just can't win. Then you have LSU with two national championships. They've were denied the AP Championship in 2003 because of a stink USC put up about not being in the title game. And for me, the team of the decade is Florida. They struggled during the Zook years but have 2 National Championships in 3 years plus have been to several big time bowl games outside of that.

My ranking:
Florida
LSU
USC
OSU
OU

Possibly, but USC would have to stop gagging against PAC 10 teams on the road.

Stanford, UCLA, Oregon State... for all of USC's successes and draft picks, it's hard to take them seriously as team of the decade when they can't get to the Title game. The PAC 10 is not the SEC or even the Big 12

Underachiever of the decade would be extremely appropriate for USC.

If you're literally talking about '01, maybe, but they lost the National Title game in '02to an Ohio State team that set the record for most players drafted from one school in one draft with 14, if memory serves

It's so easy to hate the Sooners.

It's probably USC. They dominate recruiting, especially in the Pac-10. They always have great players waiting the the wings when they lose players. I think Florida is the team of this 5 year window that we've started. (2007 NC - 2011 NC). I think they should take next years NC. Their D is too sick.

It was mentioned earlier but USC underachieves each year. If the PAC 10 is so weak where they should dominate it, then they clearly SHOULD dominate it and not lose a single conference game. They clearly are head and shoulders above everyone else in their conference as far as talent but that talent hasn't translated into championships. They should have more than one outright title.

Actually, Auburn in 2003 had the strongest case. Finished undefeated in the regular season (beat everyone in the SEC) yet gets hosed from playing USC in the national title game.

And this year I have Texas vs. Florida in the National Title game.

If not Florida then LSU will be in it. I just feel that either Florida, LSU, Texas, or USC, any of those four, will face each other in the championship.

If it does, then I'm reserving my vote, because Florida is the most likely National Champion of this group, and if you win 3 NC's in one decade, I don't care what the rest of the stats say, you're the best team of the decade.

In terms of recruiting -- that's what college ball is all about -- it's USC. I agree with the Gator homer here, the decade is not over yet. Florida's team speed 3 yrs ago blew Ohio St. away in that championship game, & last yr. they beat 2 excellent teams who were ranked #1 themselves, Alabama & Oklahoma, for the title, but the crucial factor determining the 2010 champion is Meyer retaining Tebow & all starting 11 members of his defense including Spikes. That's more important than the #1 & #2-ranked recruiting classes posted in the same SEC, from Alabama & LSU respectively, b/c experienced seniors are simply better than incoming freshmen.

Florida plays LSU & Mississippi who upset them in the Swamp last season, those are the Gator games to circle on your calendar this Fall. Some of the pundits are so fawning fatuous over this Florida team they think they not only will be #1 ranked all yr. but will run the table & finish 13-0 beating Texas in the national title game, but I don't think so. They have about 4-5 cupcake game Ws on their schedule but the SEC has too much talent & damn good coaches embedded in it, an SEC schedule is negotiating a minefield for even the best teams.

I think it's going to be Texas beating an SEC team for the title, Texas got a lot of returning senior talent too, it might be Florida, who knows. My take on the other contenders who will be in the mix:

LSU -- Too young, lost too much defensive talent to graduation.
Alabama -- Also too young, new QB.
Oklahoma -- Can match Florida's team speed & defense but won't win Big 12.
Texas -- With McCoy back this is the team to watch.
USC -- Pac 10 dominance to be challenged by a team from state of Oregon handing them the telltale 1 loss like last yr.

YAYareaRB

Yes we are young. But we have the talent to re-load. We lossed one 4 guys out of the starting front 7 and 1 guy out of the 4 DBs who can easily be replaced by Chad Jones, who I compare to a young Laron Landry with extra free lance. That's the thing about LSU, especially on the D-Line, re-loading ain't a thang but a chicken wang to us.

Jefferson's mobility offers us another demention on offense that I was hoping to see with Peri-joke but you know how that went. Our running game might be second to non in the conference and we got a strong batch of WRs that are ready to put in work ala Dwayne Bowe, Buter Davis, Early Doucet. Ciron Black returning gives us time to groom a back up but our Offensive front won't be hurt with the loss of big Herman. Barksdale and Co. are ready and willing to do work with Black.

I'm getting all excited. and plus I won the picture war! BAM!

By the way, an SEC team can afford a loss to a good opponent and still make the Championship. See: Florida's runs - just has to be an early loss that the pollsters can forget about with a really strong finish.

Didn't they lose to Ole Miss last season? They were good last season. But I don't think anyone has ever suffered TWO losses and ended up in the National Championship like LSU.

I've already stated my opinion. I think it's going to be Texas vs Florida this year in the NC

I don't respect Oklahoma as a program because they always choke in January. Bowl performance is a huge barometer for success in the NCAA.

I think Texas deserves to be in the discussion.

NCs before 1970 shouldnt even count. Lets name the National Champ before the bowl game. Right
