Yea, the Braves took someone I actually know a little about and like. Robby Hefflinger is a big kid with a lot of power.

"The Pirates. Tony Sanchez might have been the safest pick in the '09 draft class after elite players Stephen Strasburg and Dustin Ackley. He's a premium defensive catcher with good makeup, a self-made player who should at worst be a big league backup. But even his advocates in scouting circles grade his hit tool as below-average or fringe-average; they project him to hit .250 or .260 in the major leagues. He has average power, projecting to 15-20 home runs annually. That would be good production at catcher, but it's not the kind of ceiling teams tend to look for in a No. 4 overall pick. Pittsburgh's other picks—righthanders Victor Black and Brooks Pounders, and juco outfielder Evan Chambers—all seem to have been taken about a round too high."-BA

Sanchez must have been a pre-draft deal. A lot of people figure it was done so the Pirates can make a max offer for Miguel Sano, the jewel of this year's IFA class. Read a scouting report on him with this to say:
Sanó is way too polished, it looks like he has been playing the Major League for 15 years, I have never seen a teen control the Strike Zone like he does, he hits the ball to all sides of the field, he doesnt swing at bad pitches
Thats a hell of a statement to make about a 16 year old

I just want the Yanks to get involved with Sano cause we really have no one even remotely close to replace Jeter in the upcoming years. I mean Pena is nice, but he is definitely more of a utility player

And I've never seen David Berryhill pitch but, he sure has some impressive movement on his pitches from the scouting videos I just watched. Fastball in the mid 90's at times as well. Wish he was a starter.

I hope the Pirates can sign these HS arms in Von Rosenberg and Cain. They seem to have high upside like how Quinton(sp) Miller did last draft.

Miller, Wesley Freeman, and Robbie Grossman come to mind when the Pirates could pay over the slot to sign these kids.

I think Sano like many highly-touted, young Latin American shortstops signed before him will outgrow his position. He already possesses a 6'3, 190-pound frame, so I have my doubts.

The dude is 16, there's plenty of time to grow, lol. He doesn't have the thick build of a Miguel Cabrera, but he could easily hit 6'5'', which would project to maybe even a position in the OF. It's way too early to really know.

Bryan Smith (10:31:13 AM PT): Remember when Dennis Dixon almost won the Heisman Trophy, but was then playing summer ball with the Atlanta Braves? The Angels are going for a similar thing by drafting University of Washington quarterback Jake Locker. Like Dixon, he hasn't played baseball since high school, but with an up and down college career, the Angels are going to see if they can't get him to give up football.

Bittle was drafted by the Yankees in the second round last year but they decided not to meet his demands because of an injury. Not sure if that injury is still an issue but he wasn't drafted as high this year. I know he throws a pitch they call "the thing" because of its strange movement.

so, how did the yankees do? I really have no clue about any of these guys.

Very low key draft so far. Yankees took 27 players today, 16 pitchers, 9 hitters. 22 players from the college/community college ranks. Out of the 16 pitchers, 6 were lefties. I'm figuring that they hope they can transfer some of these pitchers into lefty relief help, can't have enough of those. But like I said, very un Yankee like, no real tough signs, only one draft eligible sophmore in the group.

My boy Harold Brantley was selected by the Marlins in the 30th round. He was out taking batting practice and we told him over the PA system and he couldn't stop smiling for probably 15 minutes. He had actually came up to the press box about an hour earlier to check on his UConn teammates to see where they went, and I asked him if he thought he was getting drafted and he said no. He is a really good kid and makes good contact. Hopefully something works out because he couldn't have been more excited.

Kind of surprised our RF, Sean Barksdale hasn't gone yet. I know being an east coaster doesn't help your case, but he's had a great career:

Big 5 player of the year
Named top 5 prospect in the A10

.371 15 56 .638 slg .485 w/ RISP overall and .526 w/ RISP in conference games. That's a pretty solid senior year.

A10 player of the year went in the 26th round to TB.

some more for ya hines:

"The Baltimore Orioles, who watched elite Dominican prospect Miguel Angel Sano in a tryout last week, apparently have ramped up their interest level to match -- or exceed -- that of the Pirates', according to an industry source. Sano, known to have reciprocal interest in the Pirates because of long-standing relationships, has a chance to break Major League Baseball's Latin American record for a signing bonus, the $4.24 million the Oakland Athletics paid last year to pitcher Michael Inoa." - PPG

Scouting in the Dominican, while money is an issue, is also influenced heavily by connections and trust that the scouts establish with the family. Many top prospects, most recently Julio Teheran, have taken pay cuts to play with organizations that appease the families

How did the Twins do Fisch?

I was impressed with a lot of their picks, I've always admired Bill Smith's draft strategies, not so much everything else he does, but he's a fantastic drafter. I was waiting for him to pull some unheralded guy in the 1st like Ben Revere but Gibson was a solid choice. I really like Ben Tootle, has first round stuff and could spell future closer. My favourite picks were Derek McCallum because I have a boner for everything Golden Gophers and Chris Herrmann, a college catcher who has the versatility to play anywhere.

He can really drill the ball, he has hit 2 of the 3 homers this year at our home field where each have gone at least 380 feet since it is 380 feet to CF. They definitely like to draft power pitchers. I can see it now...

Man 1: "What about this kid Mike Leake? He was dominant this past year."
Ryan: "Mike Leake? Don't give me anyone of those soft-tossing m***** ******s! That stuff is chicken s***! I want some velocity out of my pitchers. Figures the guy with glasses would suggest a soft tossing p****."

To be fair, most pitchers are big. The Yankees drafted a ton of pitchers, and only two of them were under 6' as well. Really I'd consider 6'1 relatively short for a pitcher, it's the guys that are 6'4, even 6'5+ that are really tall pitchers. Those are the guys that are going to get a great downward plane on their fastball and make it tough to hit. Just my take on it at least, though I do see your point and the Rangers definitely had a draft (particularly up top) to be excited about.

This is true. Rumors last year were that the A's did not offer Inoa (or Ynoa) the highest signing bonus. But his parents/agent felt that they were the best fit.

Hopefully the A's can come in an get Sano. They are reportedly interested in him as well as Edgar Ferrera and Jean Carlos Batista.

Kind of surprised our RF, Sean Barksdale hasn't gone yet. I know being an east coaster doesn't help your case, but he's had a great career:

1st team A10
Big 5 player of the year
Named top 5 prospect in the A10

.371 15 56 .638 slg .485 w/ RISP overall and .526 w/ RISP in conference games. That's a pretty solid senior year.

A10 player of the year went in the 26th round to TB.

38th round by the Astros! Yayyyyyyy :)

When you break it down like that D, a lot of those guys have serious frames. Looks like more than half of them are at least 6'4 and probably about 1/4 are bigger than that. And while there are downsides to the way Ryan handles pitchers, there are upsides as well and the cream of what the organization is going to want to have in their pitchers is going to rise to the top. With the efforts that the team is making to bring in quality young players and not being afraid to spend to do so, it's got to be a really exciting time to be a Rangers fan.

Anyone????

Probably not a huge prospect right now and he hasn't done much at Notre Dame but Evan Danieli was drafted out of HS (not too high, I'm pretty sure because he had a strong commitment to ND) and has a huge frame (6'8) and had pretty good velocity and control. If he puts it together next year I wouldn't be surprised if he's a first rounder. HS teammate of Porcello, and although his velocity wasn't quite as good IIRC and he didn't have the same secondary stuff or control he had some solid offerings and he was damn good as well. They were a nasty 1-2 punch. So not a huge name, but it's somebody who could end up really improving his stock next year. He's definitely got the tools.

I'm also going to like to see what you have to say about the Yanks draft. Very very unorthodox, un-Yankee like. I don't recall the last draft where they went signability as opposed to projectability. With the exception of Heathcout I should say

Mitchell is gonna be a god awful bust... And as a White Sox fan, that infuriates me.

Look at our track record with football players who also played baseball...

Joe Borchard - Strike one
Josh Fields - Strike two
Jared Mitchell - Strike three?

Considering Mitchell's disgustingly low contact rate, his ****** approach at bat, and his poor swing... I think it's safe to say we gotta another bust on our hands. Oh, how I would have loved to get either Rex Brothers, Tim Wheeler, Mike Trout, Eric Arnett instead. Trout would have been a dream come true though.

On the bright side though, Trayce Thompson seems to have a ton of upside with potential to be a top pick in 3 years, and I love Josh Phegely, especially if he can stick behind the plate. Bryan Morgado seems like our type of guy as well. Someone with really good stuff, but needs a lot of refinement. And in the past two years, it seems we've done a great job with Poreda, Dan Hudson, and Dex Carter.

What will make this a winner or loser (at least as of now) is if we pony up to sign either Dane Williams and/or Brian Goodwin. Both of those guys were top 4 round talent who dropped into the teens due to signability concerns. Hopefully we don't go cheap.

I think he'll turn into a fine defensive catcher. He called his own games at Indy and is said to be very smart and a leader on the team. He's also got a very strong arm. His problems seem to be his lateral movement and quickness, but I think he'll turn out alright. He can't be any worse than Pierzynski behind the plate.

It'll be interesting to see if Flowers can stick behind the plate. However, Phegley's bat should progress quickly.

How'd you get the job? Did you go to "scout school" or do you know someone???

Scouting is something I always thought about getting into, but it seems like something you have to know someone to do.

Mark DeRosa, whom the Cardinals acquired in a trade with Cleveland just more than two weeks ago, is headed to the 15-day disabled list with a left wrist strain. DeRosa, who played just three games with the Cardinals before injuring the wrist, was initially thought to be rejoining the Cardinals in Milwaukee tonight for the start of a three-game series. However, after an examination of the wrist on Monday, the team announced this afternoon that he will be moved to the disabled list, retroactive to July 1.

Way to lie to us and say he'll be back in a few games!

Anywho....great pitching match up tonight.
