I recently had a friend of mine who was formerly a die hard viking fan and now he has transformed into a Packer fan as well.( yeah I know to be both a Packer fan and viking fan is absurd) I am certianly glad to have new bretheren in the Packer nation, but is this really somthing that should be tolerated? I know for me personally there is no way in hell that any fiber of my being could ever have once inkling of liking for the vikings. I have met many people who are like this in my days and i really don't see it as acceptable in the sport of football. Am I alone here, or is this somthing that should not be tolerated? I may just be an asshole who is really critical of others but it just seems unloyal to me. What do you all think? Is this somthing that is acceptable? What circumstances can justify it?
Wait, so is he
1. Both a Packers and Vikings fan currently
or
2. An ex Vikings fan turned Packer fan
Either way it is rediculous, and I can't think that he is truely a fan of either team.

Your friend is clearly not a huge football fan. If he claims to be, then you have a problem. But a lot of people these days like other teams (I used to like the rams because "they're cool". I know, terrible)

He's both a Packer and viking fan now. And he actually is a huge football fan who played both HS and college ball. He knows more about football than anyone I know. My theory is that he is becomming a packer fan and is just too scared to admit he dosen't like the vikings anymore.
the ONLY time it's ok is if your city didn't have a real team, so you grew up rooting for someone else, then you started rooting for your team when your city finally got one. and even then, it has to be a gradual shift in loyalty, not a dual loyalty forever thing.
as an addendum, if they weren't division or conference opponents, and he simply had a mild preference for one, that would be ok.

Well he's from South Dakota like me, so we don't exactly have a city team. Most people there like the vikings though because they are the closest pro team.
Fairweather fan. It's even worse because it's the same division.

wow unloyal....LOL this forum is getting pretty serious, i mean i like san diego, but i have to root for my home team too cowboys :]
Dual Teams can only work if there in differnt conferences,
Indy has been my favorite team ever since i learned of the NFL way back, however i live near Dallas and have season tickets for the Boys, I some-what like Dallas but if they play each other you have to go with your #1 team, and none of this wearing a Colts shirt and Cowboys hat, i was all decked in Colts gear and i took that loss and the harrasment of Cowboy fans and a couple of empty beer bottles thrown my way (thankfully their plastic at games). I think that one should be allowed to like 2 teams but not if they are in the same confernce or if they are rivals.

I think you can have other teams, but only one primary team.
Especially if it's in another conference. I'm a really big Bears fan (obviously) but I'm friends with Charlie Frye so as soon as he became a Brown my interest in them increased dramatically. Obviously that's an extreme example, and when the Bears play the Browns I'm hoping Charlie gets his face smashed in, but it happens.

Well I'm both a Cubs and Sox fan. I pull more for the Sox but I support both teams.
But people who root for teams equally, like cardsalltheway don't count. You have to have ONE PRIMARY TEAM that you pull for all the time no matter who they play.
And that's who I am with the White Sox.

Yeah I was at that game; Jeff Garcia was a beast in that one, and yeah it sucks when Cowboys fans at the game are pissed because they do stuff like that and it sucks when they win a big game because they feel like hot sh*t and that they can do whatever they want.

I think that follows the seperate conference rule, ones American and one is National. So as long as you cheer for your favorite of the two when they meet and dont go with who ever is doing the best, and besides do they even play each other that much?

soccer's probably not particularly relevant, given that the players themselves seem to be able to play for several teams in a single season, a situation no nfl player would ever be in and that there are so many leagues i don't think you could have only one team you root for.

You can not like two teams in the same sport, period. You CAN NOT hedge your bets. It doesn't matter what Conference or Division they're in, you have to pick one. This sports bigamy has to stop.
Side Note: I get this question alot "Can I still like other players"? Yes you can. For example, as a fan of The Ohio State University Anthony Schliegel was my favorite player.
Can I follow his career as a Jet? Absolutely.
Can I become a Jets fan? Absolutely not
Can I buy his jersey? Absolutely not

My Favorite teams
NCCA-USC
MLB-LA Dodgers
NBA- LA Lakers
NFL- DENVER Broncos
Never been a fan of either San Diego or Oakland, and I fell in love with Denver during the Elway, Davis days. If LA had a team when I began following NFL Football I most likely wouldn't be a Broncos fan.

I am a dual teamship guy: Eagles and Texans.
Since one is in the NFC and one is in the AFC there isn't much crossing over. It is a sin to consider yourself a fan of two teams in the same division. I also like the Ravens but when they play the Texans or Eagles I root against them. There's no problem with liking another team as long as it isn't a rival or in the same division.

This also brings up another on of my pet peeves. People who like Boston. I realize that there are many people who actually like Boston for valid reasons. However, some people like them as if they're the opposite of the yankees. The Red socks are just about the same damn thing. The Yankess and the Redsox spend money like it's water. Evil empires.

i think that was a bad example. if you move from minneapolis to green bay, you're almost obligated to be an even bigger vikings fan. otoh, if you move from san diego to philadelphia and will never really get to watch your home team again, it's more understandable to start rooting for the eagles more. otoh, this also somewhat depends on your age. if you're under 12, who cares, you'll end up rooting for everyone at some point because someone gave you a joe montana starting line-up doll or you found some guys' rookie card and decided you loved him. if you're over 60, you probably have long since stopped caring who you root for and only root locally because it takes less effort. anywhere between those ages though, you should still be obligated to root for your former home team. i mean, moving to boston for 3 years only made me hate the patriots and red sox more.

As for Colorado, they have some good colleges there for undergraduate studies (I had considered Colorado College coming out of high school as my undergrad) but in terms of national research they're pretty sub-par. Basically anything south of the mason-dixon line or West of the Mississippi River (excluding California schools) doesn't have much to offer in terms of research monies, prestige, and what not. There are a few exceptions (Duke, North Carolina, Texas) but not many.

Exactly what I was thinking. If the Bills move to Toronto things could get interesting in this board with all the Canadians

it's also (obviously) really important what you're studying. CU gets an absolutely massive amount of funding for physics related research (and deservedly so, having produced the most recent [or second most recent] nobel prize winner and being one of the biggest NASA contributers) and a few other engineering related stuff. for things like liberal arts and law, you're absolutely right, it's all about the new england area (with a few exceptions).

Well, seeing as every member of my family that lives in the states, and has been to Canada to any extent, is getting the hell out as soon as they're 18 leads me to believe that someone is talking out of their ass. I even have alot of American friends, seeing as I spend at least a month a year there, and they all say that they'd rather live in Canada. Out of every person on this website I've probably spent the most time in both countries, and while I wouldn't say Canada is better, I'd say that most of you have no idea what you're talking about when you talk about Canada.
Wait... I forgot to look at the name of the poster before I read the post! I could have saved some reading time and still known that the post would have no merit whatsoever.

Whats to argue? Are you actually going to imply that Canda is a legetament state?
I will state that "legetament" is not even close to any real word.
I believe you were looking for 'legitimate', but... you're not even close to that.

Well, I'm glad to have an educated discussion! I could talk about health care, crime rates, natural beauty, electricity, or even the UN ranking of countries.
Luckily, I won't have to make a well-formed, fact based argument.
I can just say "US is teh lamest rolz," and that will seem to fit right in with your intelligence level.

it's also (obviously) really important what you're studying.
Well I was only talking about programs that matter, should have specified.:)
Big Ten schools are excellent research centers as well (Michigan, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Minnesota, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio State, Iowa, Michigan State, Penn State, Purdue in order....Purdue isn't really fair as they focus much much more on math & sciences) in large part because they, as land grant colleges, acquire a large bulk of state allocated funds for research and because, unlike smaller east-coast schools, they have such massive enrollment #'s that undergraduate funds serve in part to supliment graduate research (suckers). Past the Ivy League (obviously) I would argue that the Big Ten is next in line in terms of graduate research, at least liberal arts research. The ACC has Duke, NC, Virginia, and Maryland but there is a large drop off after that. The Pac-10 has Cal and Stanford but has the same situation.

I'm not the one that randomly stated "Canada is a hell hole" with no evidence/reasoning behind it.
If asked, I doubt anyone would look back and say that I got it locked because I called you on some idiotic statement.
Anyways, I have nothing against the US, and don't think that Canada is better, as I have said. I just hate ignorant comments.

of course the big ten schools would be good for research... there are very few distractions (hey guys, it's the weekend!!! let's go.... out to the cornfield?), even fewer attractive girls and the college basketball is absolutely painful to watch (i don't care how good the team is, big ten basketball is boring). plus the winter is disgusting and the summer is too humid.

Ok, want to go back and read what I said? Or should I simply type everything out again, since it obviously takes you at least two attempts to understand basic concepts.
I said "I never argued anything political." Did I make any argument about any of those things? No. Did I ever state that Canada is better? No.
In fact, the only conclusions I drew (for an argument to exist there must be a conclusion), were that you are an idiot and that I didn't think Canada or the US was better than the other. It's fricking arbitrary lines with people living inside them. Then each set of people that lived in each set of lines decided that they were better than the other for arbitrary reasons. How can either one be better than the other when they both have a majority of idiots?
Anyways, I'm done trying to argue with someone who is either 2 years old or some form of chimp.

I only cheer for any team other than the Broncos or Devils when my team is knocked out. I know a guy who likes the Chiefs AND Chargers as his favourite teams. If you like both of them, I think that's fine, as long as one of them or both isnt your favourite. For instance, another friend of mine, who is a Bears fan, likes the Ravens, Chargers, Chiefs, Steelers, etc. too, but that is acceptable in my books because he doesn't like any other teams in his favorite's division. Like me. RUCK THE FAIDERS, CHUCK THE FIEFS, AND CHUCK THE FARGERS.
