John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports the Seattle Seahawks have signed free agent S Deon Grant (Jaguars) to a six-year contract worth more than $30 million. The deal included what is believed to be the largest signing bonus ever given to an NFL safety.

It's suprising to me that Paul Allen is basically the same as Dan Snyder but gets little to no grief at all. He's been throwing bonus money out his ears the last few years. Not to mention how much Holmgren makes.

Thats a large contract.

Holmgren is easily among the best coaches of his era, but some of the deals the Seahawks have made in the last few years (this year definitely included) are absolutely hideous.

About Paul Allen and Dan Snyder

IMHO It's because the Seahawks have actually been successful for awhile as compared to the skins who have had one good season in recent years, and the rest mediocre to this point.

thats a lot to pay Deon Grant, who is really nothing special. Hes a solid athlete and a solid player but bottom line he is not a playmaker and if youre gonna get the biggest signing bonus ever for a S, you better bring some serious playmaking ability to the table, because thats what the S position is all about.

I do think Grant makes sense because he is a solid coverage safety who can help a struggling coverage unit and compensate for Boulware who needs to play up in the box. They just grossly overpaid for someone who is pretty average at the end of the day. Theres a reason JAX didnt even attempt to resign him.

I don't believe that Deon Grant deserves that much money that he is being given. He is a good talent but he should be paid as the top tier safties in the league as he is not a Great safety. While I think it does improve the Seahawks safety tandem, I don't think that Grant deserves as much as he is being piad.

Oh woooow. Guess his contract is no surprise this offseason, but this is getting out of hand. If I were a GM I would just say **** FA, I will just build through the draft. Even if I had to get FAs, I would just settle for the small ones that no one knows about and get away with paying them less.

This is wayyy ridiculous.

Could this be what Hamlin was waiting for before he gets in to serious contract discussions? In my opinion, Hamlin is a better player and would probably need a larger contract from any team requiring his services.

Great. Now Hamlin can come to New Orleans :)

Well this is better than the big money signing of Achelata for the skins. The seahawks are rich but not totally stupid

Adam Schefter is really on the ball this year. He called this signing awhile back. Relative to the market, this signing is fine. I think Deon Grant is an upgrade from Ken Hamlin in coverage, which was the crucial deciding factor. Let's wait and see how the money is outlayed though. It could be backloaded so that Deon never really sees the bulk of the money, so let's reserve judgement on the contract until structure is released. That said, in comparison to some recent contracts (PFT points out similar numbers with Hope, Archuleta, Lewis), I think Grant, from the safety position, is more worth it than some of the others and should help their coverage units.

Well Clayton reported that it was the largest signing bonus ever given to a safety, so one would assume much of it is upfront.

That is a ridiculous deal. Some of these deals this offseason make me want to cry. He's maybe in the top half of the league in safeties.

Paul Allen can do what he wants with his money, that man is loaded. If it weren't for him I wouldn't be using this OS right now probably. They still over payed for him significantly, he isn't even a top ten safety, he should have gotten about what Michael Lewis did from the 49ers probably. Ken Hamlin is going to get a lot more money now probably. Wouldn't be surprised to see him end up a SS for a cover-2 team.

People are so overreacting about the contract. You can't justify these contracts with contracts signed in the past. The cap increased 20M... this is the direction the league is going. The game is gaining in popularity and so the profits are started to get funnelled down to the players. It's good to see the players getting paid. Stop looking in the past and start realizing the future.

Teams would be wiser to reward their own, more talented players, than blowing it all on mediocre talent.

I actually like Deon Grant so I don't have a problem with this signing, but most of them are insane.

I'm pretty sure Hamlin will command more. I'm not sure if that would be wiser. If Hamlin signs for similar money, then yes, I would agree that would've been wiser. I don't see it as "blowing" it away. Rather I see it as the new nature of NFL contracts.

I definitely hope so, but as time passes that seems more and more unlikely.

Thats a ton of money for an average safety at best. He was arguably our worst starter on Defense so I wont miss him.

Good point. We also dont get to know the details of the contract, like the one in Clements cotract that voids the last year in that deal. I would like to see if teams are actually spending more percentage wise on free agents this year comprared to previous years.

That being said, spending big $ on other teams free agents has not proven to be a good idea, and lot of the time it teams didn't spend their cap space wisely.

I wonder how much Tory is going to make next year, does Pitt resign him or let him walk.
