Who are they?

John Abraham is up there. Out of college he was in the late 4.4s, gave Mike Vick a good race.

Laurence Sidbury was the fastest defensive end at the combine, 4.6 on a possibly slow track.

Osi Umenyiora is up there.

What do you want? Game speed or Combine times?

Game speed you have Osi, Trent Cole, Dwight Freeney and Jared Allen. Out of these 4 the only person who ran faster than a 4.7 was Dwight Freeney. Osi wasn't invited to the combine, but was reported to run a 4.78, Jared Allen ran a 4.79 and Trent Cole ran a 4.7 at his pro-day. All three however are extremely fast off the line.

Combine speed you've got Manny Lawson who ran in the 4.4s, Quentin Groves ran a 4.53, Jevon Kearse ran a 4.43 coming out and Marcus Howard out of Georgia ran a 4.45.

He's asking a question. He doesn't know, that's why he's asking. Why would he give his opinion if he doesn't know and needs to ask?

Combine times are useless for DEs. Even 10 yard times would be too much, its all about burst and quickness.

Yup! And game speed as well with the pads on. For instance, I still remember when we played the Chargers and Tuck ran down LT from behind to make a play. This was before Tuck blew up and started to dominate. But he showed great speed catching up to LT. Some SD fans may remember that, it was in '04 or '05 i think.

Osi and Freeney are the first 2 that come to mind. but then you've got those hybrid 3-4 OLBs/4-3 DEs that have very good speed. But as pure DE's go, Osi and Freeney are atop the list

Abe for sure. Vick said that Abraham beat him in that race.

Not so much anymore but this guy used to be stupid fast. He ran a 4.43 at his pro-day and I think he has one of the fastest 10-yard splits ever.

Jared Allen is for sure up there when he was with the Chiefs he chased down Willie Parker 30+ yards down the field when every one else gave up on the play which is saying alot.

So I take it 3-4 OLBs are out of the discussion? If thats the case...

1. Dwight Freeney - fastest first step in the game. i always wondered how dominant he couldve been as a 3-4 OLB.

2. Osi Umenyiora - slightly slower than Freeney, but damn close

3. John Abraham - great pass rusher but he couldve been so much more throughout his career

4. Robert Mathis - Freeney lite

5. Trent Cole - A better version of Mathis essentially

And im going by game speed. I don't give a rat's behind about the combine.

Its gotta be Freeney. The guy has scary burst off the snap. Him and Mathis are two of the quickest which is why the Colts pass defense is so good.

Abraham is very quick as well. Though the constant with all of these guys is they are not very good against the run, whereas Jared Allen, Mario Williams etc are extremely explosive as well but are very good against the run

Chris Clemons anyone?

If we're including 3-4 DEs, Darnell Dockett is extremely quick for a 3-4 End/4-3 DT.

no one's quicker off the snap than Dwight Freeney.

Julius Peppers routinely runs sprints with the backs instead of the linebackers or linemen. He's run down running backs from behind.

He's easily quicker than half the players being mentioned here.

I can't find the video of him running pittman down from behind and NFL's highlights only shows his INT run back http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d8019dbbe/Panthers-21-Buccaneers-14

shame

Also Gaines Adams is one of the most explosive first step offs in the NFL, as does John Abraham and they've got to be mentioned.:(

First guy I thought of on this was Robert Mathis and that immediately made me think of Freeney which made me start doubting the Mathis claim.

One thing for sure in my mind is that the Colts would have the fastest pairing or at worst top 3.

Peppers is the freakish guy on my list because he is so damn big but still seems as fast as anyone else.

Allen gets back there pretty damn quick.

Abraham is a monster also.

I guess that should be my 5, though there are a lot of other guys that could easily make it.

Chris Clemons would win the DE foot race.

Damn, Peppers can haul! I take back any doubts I had about him transferring to OLB in a 3-4.

Also, it may be me just being partial to this player, but I think Kyle Vanden Bosch deserves a nod. No one in the NFL has a motor like that man and is very quick off the snap because of it.

I just want to throw out an old ass name that's playing in Canada. Isaac Hilton ran a 4.49 at the 2004 Combine. Of course he didn't do anything in the NFL, and he pissed himself at the Combine........but he was fast. lol

I mentioned Abraham and Sidbury.

Abraham has been mentioned by most people, and Sidbury had the fastest 40 for a DE at the combine.

Not too homerish!

Barwin ran a faster 40. As for being more explosive on the football field I'm not sure.

As previously mentioned, Osi and Cole didn't blaze the track.

As far as measuring explosion we'll see. Barwin had a better broad jump at the combine and then Maybin bested him at his pro day. The topic is fastest DEs so we're getting off topic.

Game speed would probably eliminate rookies at least at this point.

I read somewhere Julius Peppers can run a 4.4 at like 280 lbs. Which is absolutely ridiculous, but I believe it.

Well, don't believe it because someone lied to you.

Peppers ran in the 4.8s at the NFL combine.

He ran a 4.68 at his UNC Pro Day.

Short area quickness, agility, hand placement, leverage and initial burst are more important metrics for a DE than how fast they can cover 40 yards running a straight line.

If Jared Allen ever ran a sub 4.8, it would probably be the first time.

B.J. Raji and Cullen Jenkins.

Here's the answer, turn on your madden. Go to player management - NFL - DE and sort by speed. They know better than any of us since it's their job.
