RIP to an underrated actor, & he was my age. He showed everyone a new meaning to courage, playing the frontman for a new cable detective series last season even after he knew he was terminal, weak & wizened to skin & bones from the chemo. He was the best actor to emerge from Houston not named Quaid in my generation. He did all his own stunts in Point Break & wowed the cast & crew, he had been skydiving, surfing & riding in rodeos since HS, where his nickname was Crazy Swayze.

He will be remembered forever for getting Whoopi Goldberg an Oscar for Ghost, & for "Ditto," but Roadhouse will forever be his classic. He was Dalton & Pony Boy & Jed, leader of the Wolverines, those will be immortal roles in filmdom. I see that Red Dawn is being remade now -- it will never be the same as the classic John Milius original.

Pancreatic cancer is almost always a death sentence, by the time it's diagnosed you're down to good days & bad ones. He overcame alcoholism with a rehab only to be diagnosed with it.

He made Joel's little girl Jennifer Gray a star in two '80s films though, Red Dawn & Dirty Dancing, both surprise runaway hits. He was the only dancer who could hold a candle to Travolta in film, I guess it helped being the son of one of America's greatest dance teachers. Now he will never play Roy Rogers in a biopic, tragic b/c he looked almost exactly like him.

Adios, Patrick, you will be missed.

C Thomas Howell was Ponyboy. He was older brother Darrel. Probably just a minor mistake but a good write up.

LizardState

Yes he was Darrel in that ensemble cast film, sorry. Interesting that C. Thomas Howell was with him in 3 films & they remained close friends riding horses together. And the chemistry he & Jennifer Gray had onscreen was just electric, that & its great soundtrack made that low-budget film a major hit. Everyone who worked with him said they learned something from him. Look at a very young Charlie Sheen in Red Dawn & then his breakthrough role in Platoon a few yrs. later, I think RD was his springboard to Platoon, another ensemble cast film that introduced among others a young Johnny Depp.

Larry King is doing a tribute to him on tonight's show.
