That sucks he's already a fan favorite in Boston. I'm a Bruins fan but I really don't know too much about the trade/FA scene, I know there is some great young talent on the roster but Kessel is gonna be a good one. Apparently the organization has a lot of faith in Krejci, Wheeler, and Bergeron to trade away Kessel. Trying to get Kaberle still right?

Brian Burke is the man.

For two 1's and a 2? I think that's a huge overpayment for a guy who doesn't play defense. Not to mention the contract you had to give him.

I think the Bruins won this one. They are now stockpiled with picks, if they don't want to use them, can definitely package picks + prospects for somebody like Kovalchuk or a guy similar.

I love the acquisition of Kessel.

Brian Burke is the man.

It's good in the fact Burke realizes the chances at landing either Nash or Kovalchuk next summer are slim, at best. You'd probably have to pay significantly more than the Kessel deal to acquire one before then.

The draft picks on second thought aren't as concerning because of our recent track record of signing elite college FAs and overseas players. Toronto is usually an attractive destination for these players, especially with Burke in charge.

Wootylicous
09-19-2009, 10:14 AM
Don't try the diminish the impact of two first round pick and a second seriously. The Bruins absolutely destroyed this one and now they can draft young players full of potential or trade these picks for an elite player.

There is no doubt that Chiarelli drove a hard bargain in these negotiations, but that's why some consider him the best GM in the game. Yes, it's an extremely steep price to pay, and I'll be the first to acknowledge that, however, there are two reasons as to why this deal was completed:

a) Kessel is 21 years old (turns 22 in October); the second highest goal scoring forward under the age of 23 last season.

b) During Burke's tenure as GM he has stockpiled on young talent (Bozak, Hanson, Gustavsson, Slaney, etc.) without using any draft picks, which allows us to ‘take some cans off the shelf’ for the future, per se. Any one of those players I mentioned would’ve likely commanded a very high selection in the draft.

Geo

Kessel is better than those picks.

Here's all 42 Kessel goals last year. See for yourself how many had to do with Savard, and how many had to with his speed, wrist-shot, play around the net, and awareness.

rqXSQz6FI5s

The kid is a sniper.

And I would take Kessel a thousand times over that piece of trash Heatley. Talk about an easy decision. That no-good quitter and floater, signed to $7.5M annual cap hit for five more years with a NTC. Thornton will set him up for 50 goals this regular season, but we'll see how those two on a top line fare in the playoffs.

Meanwhile Kessel hasn't even entered his prime yet, he turns 22 on October 2nd. He's also a PPG player in the playoffs so far.

Some hockey fans, especially those on Hockey's Future, overrate 1st round picks if they aren't Top 10 - or Top 15 in a really good class - picks. And all anyone talks about is how terrible the 2011 draft is shaping up to be, with the 2010 class not looking that good either after the first 6 or 7 guys. Heck trading up to get a Phil Kessel in the Draft would cost around the same thing (1st + 1st + 2nd) if you're drafting from say the 15th.

Burke is building a winner here folks, just like he's done in previous stops. Instead of giving up either Kaberle or Kadri, he kept both and gave up the '10 picks and the '11 pick. Plus there's still money coming off the books after this season, with expiring contracts.

Borat

What a stupid trade for the Leafs. They could have just signed him to an offer sheet and only given up a 1st, 2nd and 3rd. LMFAO.

Job
09-19-2009, 01:09 PM
Don't be surprised in 3-5 years after a couple winning seasons to see him quit the team when the perspective of re-signing all the guys he traded for comes up (which will be impossible to do within cap space), and he realizes he's got no good prospect in the system to take their place.

619
09-19-2009, 04:55 PM
What a stupid trade for the Leafs. They could have just signed him to an offer sheet and only given up a 1st, 2nd and 3rd. LMFAO.

Not so fast. The Kessel contract wouldn't have been nearly enough on the RFA market. Chiarelli is a shrewd negotiator and would’ve matched without hesitation knowing there are likely to be multiple teams still interested in his player’s services where he can drive a larger bargain. His patience throughout this whole process was quite remarkable, actually.

Exactly how often do 21-year-old blue-chip snipers hit the open trade market? That’s exactly why Burke pulled the trigger this early, with Kessel reportedly out ‘til November at the earliest. You’d have to figure a few contending teams were ready to jump in at any time if talks between the Leafs and Bruins broke down for a second time.

During each of Burke’s tenures he’s made a big splash to catapult his franchise for the years to follow. Back in ’93 with Hartford it was the move to draft Pronger, in ’99 with Vancouver it was the drafting and signing of the Sedins’, in ’06 with Anaheim it was a blockbuster deal for Pronger (a second time) who played an important role in the Ducks run to a Stanley Cup championship that next season, and now this – a ‘questionable’ move for one of the league’s elite snipers.

Not the first time a Burke transaction has been this hotly contested, and I bet it sure won't be the last, either. For those who believe Burke will jump ship after a few seasons must remember this is his dream job, operating under the 'Vatican of hockey', as he puts it.

While some fans overrate 1st round draft picks, it seems Leaf fans are underrating them. There are still possible great players in the 5-20 range (which is where the Leafs will likely be picking). A lot of the superstars in this league were drafted in that range or lower. Fact of the matter is, Toronto overpaid. The only people who haven't said that Toronto overpaid, are Toronto fans. Kessel isn't an elite sniper by any means. He uses the same inside toe-drag move on a lot of his goals. Somebody already mentioned it, but the Sharks got Heatley at a much lower price than Kessel and Heatley is 10x the player Kessel is right now and probably for the next 3-5 years as well.

I think Lisin makes it as well. He has looked pretty good this preseason. Although I would love to see Grachev make the team. It would also be awesome to see a young guy like Sanguinetti make it.

I think Sanguinetti has a chance. One of either him or Del Zotto make it in my opinion.

If it's between those two I would assume it would be Sanguinetti. Del Zotto could use a little more time to develop IMO and I think a year at Hartford could really do him well. It's really good to see these young guys out there competing for jobs, it seems like it hasn't been like this for a while for them

My boy Paul Bissionnette is still in camp and I hope he makes it. This boy can scrap. Ryan Bayda might also make the team.

Biz is not that great of a fighter compared to most heavies. He was barely top 10 material in the AHL last year.

Biz Nasty might not be a heavy weight, but he will stick up for his teamates when needed. Ruup will probably be our heavy if we move Godard.

Wow, the NHL 10 fantasy drafts are way harder than I thought. Maybe I just had a bad pick.

My team

Lucic - Getzlaf - Okposo
Cole - Koivu - Cleary
Clutterbuck - Reinprecht - Cogliano
Boogaard - Wellwood - Pyatt

Regehr - Bouwmeester
Bogosian - Zidlicky
Pietrangelo - Zanon

Turco
Bernier

Haha I did one a few days ago and I ended up with a team similar to yours.

Whitney-Getzlaf-Havlat
Hartnell-M. Koivu-Sharp
Burrows-Stoll-Cleary
Abdelkader-Matthias-Bergfors

Burns-Weber
Volchenkov-Wideman
Martin-Pietrangelo

Biron
Bernier

I had to make a few trades for Koivu, Stoll and Biron since I was lacking down the middle and I needed a goalie to step in for a year befor eI call up Bernier and so I don't have any picks left for next year, but I don't really need them anyways.

Also there are some guys who you can find in free agency like Jon Carlsson, Erik Karlsson, David Rundblad and Jacob Jossefson.

Created Tavares and did another one with the Islanders.. I love the way my team looks now.

Whitney - Koivu - Kovalev
Turris - Tavares - Okposo
Samsonov - Larose - Nolan
Cleary - Brodziak - Wellwood

Doughty - Bieksa
Pietrangelo - Zidlicky
Staios - Gill

Turco
Boucher

with Bernier in the minors

FYI I made Tavares a little worse than Stamkos, 82 overall, 93 passing, 85 wrist accuracy/power, A offensive potential, C+ defensive potential, B athleticism potential

Kaaadddriiii!!!

The chances of Kadri making the squad are looking slim, to say the least. Although, it does make complete sense from the team's perspective. Kadri is limited, with all player strengths and weaknesses considered, to a top six forward role or it's back to the Knights for him. What he'd offer on the bottom two lines is nowhere near what Burke is shooting for philosophically. Either way he's a bonafide first line talent in my mind, and not this second line potential BS I've come across to read since the draft.

Todd Bertuzzi
09-23-2009, 07:45 PM
I agree that Kadri should be sent down. Another year playing in junior and in the WJC for Team Canada will do him well. He is not ready for the NHL yet and the Leafs have no need to rush him. Same goes for Ottawa and Cowen. Murray said it was tough sending him back to Spokane since he believed he could play this year, but again it's the right move. He missed all of last year with a knee injury and the experience he'll get playing at the WJC will be great for him.

A lot of my buddies went to Totino-Grace, the team that Oshie beat (for Warroad) in the state championship with an OT goal.. one of my friends still damns his attempted poke check off the draw when Oshie ended it.

I also saw him 3 times in college play our school, he was a stud 2 out of the 3 games, he got pounded in the 2nd one and didn't do a thing.

Wouldn't be shocked at all to see PMB lead the team in points with the new system. The guy has every opportunity to win the #2 center job, play on the top PP as the point man once again, and rack up 50+ assists. So much talent in that little body.

That said, I feel like the Wild miss the playoffs this year and are pretty poor all around. The general consensus is that the players are being too cautious with their decision making and it's costing the team. This is going to be a long year, for sure. Maybe next year they will pick up some more secondary pieces to build around Koivu, Havlat, and Burns, but I just don't see a whole lot of success this year.

Agreed, Stalberg will be the youngster to make the roster. He won a spot like he had to.

Bozak would make it now if not for current depth at center. And personally I'd much rather have Bozak than Stajan, but what can you do. At least he'll get top-line minutes with the Marlies until something opens up, be it injury or trade or otherwise.

Kadri is a year away. He just needs to get stronger. Looking forward to seeing him play at the WJC.

Actually, Skoula was pretty good last year. He cut down on the boneheaded plays tenfold. He can play in the NHL. Great move by the Pens, a guy with a load of experience that has some decent size and can skate a bit. He's not going to pour in many points, but he's pretty good positionally. I'd say he's definitely at the least a 5th-6th defensemen. Will have a terrible game every once in awhile, though.

I was hoping we would re-sign him(he would have came dirt cheap), but he is stuck in the middle for what Fletcher/Richards are looking for.

I saw Gillies got sent down to the AHL. What a joke Risebrough was. The kid deserved to be nowhere near the NHL last year, he basically lost a year of development. Same with James Sheppard, although he was much closer than Gillies was coming out of the draft. Sheppard is a bull on the puck and will finally get a chance to shine this year.

I am really thinking the Wild are going to be bad this year. Defensemen look way too tentative with the puck. They don't know what to do. Burns is going to have a great year, though. This system is perfect for him. He might put up 50 points.

I am a bit worried about Koivu and his lack of skating prowess. It's really the only hole in his game, but it's a premium to be able to skate with Richards at the helm. I'm sure he'll be fine, but the injuries he's had in the preseason haven't helped anything.

I think we pick in the top 8 next year. I expect many defensive breakdowns as we adjust to the new system. Plus, Backstrom is a wild card without 4 guys in front of him clearing out the net and forcing exterior shots. He's not all that talented and relies more on positioning.

The sad part is, as bad as I think we are going to be, the games are going to be much more fun to watch this year.

I will bet you $20,000,000 that this doesn't happen. Also, why Montreal at 2? I'll be pumped with a top 6 finish, let alone top 2.

Also, Pittsburgh won't repeat.

I like Montreal's team this year, and hopefully Price will jump to his potential.

Pittsburgh might not repeat, but that's just me being a homer.

I think Montreal finishing as a top 2 seed in the East is almost as unlikely as the other top 2 seed being from the same division.

One new playoff team, Hines? I suppose just predicting a repeat is fun enough, and I won't disagree with the chances of any of those 15 teams to return, but come on.

I'll post my predictions later. They will have the Sabres in the playoffs.

Like the Nashville pick. I think most people will be picking them to be the bottomfeeders in the Central, but they'll probably be on the bubble all year as usual and can still grab that 8 spot. Just need to stay healthy, and hopefully get any kind of 3rd line scoring.

I have some little predictions:

I think Toronto will make the playoffs this year. Gustavsson will take the #1 goalie job from Toskala this season, and they also signed Joey MacDonald who would have been the Leafs' best netminder last season (I just hope he doesn't get claimed on waivers).

I wouldn't be surprised if Ottawa makes it too. I think there's definite addition by subtraction with Heatley, nevermind the guys they brought in overall. And a healthy LeClaire boucing back in goal could/will help lead them back to the playoffs.

Montreal on the other hand wont make it. That's a bad patch-up job.

Philly sabotages themselves at goalie for yet another season.

I don't think Boston has the offense to make it to the Finals. Same with Washington and their defense. So if I had to right now pick a team in the East to make it to the Finals, it would be Pittsburgh.

San Jose will have a great regular season record and fail in the playoffs again. Two-thirds of the first line is Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley, that's super in the regular season but scary for another reason in the playoffs.

Chicago should be a major contender. But I am not a big believer in Cristobal Huet.

These are some of the quotes I've seen from Wild fans:

Is this the Pens way of saying that they would rather not repeat as Cup champs?

If nothing else, you now have a new punching bag at which you can direct your anger. I thouroughly enjoyed berating Skoultard the last couple of years.

as a wild fan he wasn't that bad due to his size, but don't expect much goals or assist, and hes kinda slow, and bad puck handler, not aggressive

When injuries take place, and they will, and Skoula is tossed into the teeth of a playoff race, you'll see what I mean.

So, when that happens, ENJOY!

HAHAHAHA! Sucks for the Penguins!

you guys are ****** now.

Why not give someone else a chance to be the 7th defenseman instead of Skoula who the rest of the hockey world already seems to have realized sucks?

What he lacks in offensive talent, he makes up for with a lack of defensive talent.

A McChicken sandwich would have been too much to pay for that sack of crap.

Im so glad we dont have to see this empty sweater on the wild anymore, just seeing him out on the ice used to pisss me off. He is by far one of the worst defensemen in the league, hes slow, he cant handle the puck, he cant pass the puck, and hes about as physical as the redwings.

Sorry Pittsburgh fans, nobody deserves this guy

When he got released by Columbus:

I was wondering why it was so windy this weekend, but it must have been the collective sigh of relief from the state of Ohio.

Congrats Jacket fans, you just dodged one ugly bullet.

****!

I was hoping someone would sign him and end ANY chance of him ever returning to the Wild.

Trust me, you'd want a cone back there instead of Skoula.

Those are just some of them.

You're basically going to need Kessel to score 50+ goals this year. Doubtful.

I wouldn't be surprised if Ottawa makes it too. I think there's definite addition by subtraction with Heatley, nevermind the guys they brought in overall. And a healthy LeClaire boucing back in goal could/will help lead them back to the playoffs.

Subtracting a 40-50 goal scorer is never addition by subtraction.

Looking at Bourque's stats, he seems to be able to put the puck in the net. Can he be a potential top 6 forward or is his lack of size going to keep him out? I know St Louis and Gionta are small and goal scorers, but can Bourque be a potential St Louis or Gionta?

Tyler Myers stayed up with the Sabres.... for now. He'll probably play fewer than 9 games while Lydman recovers from a minor injury.

Tim Kennedy is also up, at least while Mair is out. Gives us an interesting line situation as we'll probably only dress one real 4th-liner (Ellis or Kaleta). Kennedy never really has to leave, either, since I expect Myers to be the one out to make room for Mair when the time comes. But we'll probably call up Cody McCormick or something pointless so Dan Paille can't play with a real centerman.

I like Bourque, he seems like a good spark plug to me. Probably will top out at 15-18 goals, and destined to be a checking line winger. Who knows if his name were Chris Smith, if anyone would give a crap about him. We'll see how it goes, we have 8 defensemen, and could have easily put Tyler Sloan on waivers (and he had much more likely chance to clear) and been under the cap. But who knows what actually happens in NHL insider circles. Remember, I have 0 Jack Adams awards, so hopefully Boudreau knows what he's doing in making these decisions to give to GMGM.
