First step in the process that will ultimately lead to a true vaccine preventing HIV. Damn...

If it turns out well, this is the biggest landmark in medical science in years. A vaccine for HIV opens up the possibility for vaccines for all the other dangerous virii in the world.

I'd rather just wrap my willie than to inject myself with a bunch of random **** they're probably just testing on me.

If there was a cure, then i'd be impressed. There has always been a way to prevent HIV. It's called abstinence and not being a moron.

I didn't at first either, but this says it "only" reduces the risk by 31% IIRC. Certainly not perfect, but it could be a significant step...

The vaccine — a combination of two previously unsuccessful vaccines — cut the risk of becoming infected with HIV by more than 31 percent in the world's largest AIDS vaccine trial of more than 16,000 volunteers in Thailand, researchers announced Thursday in Bangkok.

Not a cure, just a blocking agent. Money makes some weird **** happen. It's for that very reason that I think a cure, where as it may be found, may never be brought to light.

HAHAHA, yeah, def agree there, but I figured it would be something people would be interested in, spark up some debate...

okay don't share dirty needles, razor blades, dirty toilet seats that have blood stains on them.

Don't have blood transfusions without checking the blood first.

I'm pretty sure if your not a moron you can avoid this stuff.

Yeah, thanks. That's what i meant by not being a moron. If you're sharing needles, you're probably better off not polluting this world some more.

We actually talked about this in stat class the other day. Apparently the difference is barely statistically significant and as someone mentioned it only helps protect doesn't actually prevent, but still a pretty impressive advancement if it really works.

I have a friend that died a few years ago from AIDS. He was hemophiliac and got HIV from a blood transfusion when he was 11 years old during the Red Cross tainted blood scandal.... You should explain your postion to his family.

Yeah but that was in the 1970s....and it was an ethics things on Red Cross, not him being a moron.

And what i meant was like hey you and me have the same blood let me get some. Without having proper test done to determine if its safe or not.

Not being a moron can certainly prevent most cases of AIDS, but there will always be a few cases that just happen by bad luck. Like rape for instance. Shouldn't have been walking around all pretty like a moron, right?

This is great, the peace corps/army/un/etc. all do foreign humanitarian assistance in Africa and try to convince them to use prophylactics, but they just don't understand. It's a lot easier to roll into a village and line people up and give them a vaccine than try to educate them on the proper use of a condom

Considering that vaccine's do more harm than good, I don't buy it.

In most cases getting a blood transfusion would be during an emergency event in which you need the blood ASAP and really don't have much time to 'test the blood'.

Has anyone actually wondered how they did this clinical study? Did they purposely try to give 16,000 people HIV and find out 31% didn't get it?

I believe they took the 16,000 people and randomized to get 8,000 in each group, just to control via the behaviors of all people. This way you don't get a ton of people who share needles and have sex all the time without protection in one group and some abstinent people in the other.

They then gave a placebo to one group and the two vaccines to the other, and just let them live their lives for a few years before checking up on them. That's why only 74 or so had HIV after the few years in the control group and 51 had it in the vaccinated group. Otherwise I'm sure a lot more people would have contracted HIV and people would be killing those who performed this study for ridiculous ethical concerns.

The real ethical concern with this study is putting people who will probably never be able to afford it at risk when all of those who would assume the benefits are in risk free situations.
