Here in the hearty state of Minnesota, we don't consider it winter until the temps are consistently in the 20s and there is measurable snow that will last longer than a couple of days.

We are not in winter yet, but as TT says, it is right around the corner.

AQ is correct. The continental climates have the greatest swing in seasonal temperatures due to the mixture of polar and tropical winds and being located inland from the major bodies of water.

I'm currently teaching a climate unit to 7th graders.... i hate teaching geography. It is so boring. :(

SuperMcGee
10-14-2009, 10:11 AM

I'm taking a Physical Geography course, so I know exactly wassup. The_Dude is correct; it does get hot up there. You've never heard of heat waves? Florida is moderate compared to other states. We rarely touch 100 - at the most we get into the mid 90s. Whereas other states can touch those numbers a week or so out of the year.

Not this year... but last year was pretty brutal. and it's not by any stretch of imagination a 'dry heat'. and we don't get rain every day like Florida.

It's still low-mid 90's most of the summer. about 84-88 where I live (near the lake... hence the phrase cooler near the lake...), but, it has no problem ramping up to 97, 101... 104... AND THEN TO TOP IT OFF. the very same winter, it goes down to 12, 15 below zero.

and not everyone has air conditioning either.

the south only exists because of advances in air conditioning technology.

but then, you have to remember what college station is like in the summer (i can't actually remember if you're still there or if you've moved).
Back in Dallas for an indefinite amount of time. Which means it's less humid in the summer, and by less humid I mean 50% humidity instead of 70%. Honestly, you get used to the heat, it's pretty manageable. I bet it's wonderful in Denver during the summer & spring, but I couldnt handle that cold. Hell, when we were in California, I'd never go skiing in the winter because it was so cold; spring skiing is where it's at.

the average high in tahoe (for instance) is over 40! heck, i ski in short sleeves when it's 30ish.

even yesterday wasn't too bad at about 10... i ended up overheating and removing most of the layers (thought it was going to be about 0 all day, sun warmed it up a bit).

besides, the best snow is when it's cold, and that's really the only thing that matters.

Brent

I dunno, i hate spring conditions... everything melts all day, then freezes overnight. you end up with really tough crud for most of the morning. but then, i live for back country powder. it's not like there's really a wrong way to ski.
I just enjoyed going fast, so the snow we had was prefect for it. Usually, we'd get there when the slopes opened and stay til mid-to-early afternoon, or go up for night skiing, which I always enjoyed.

Current weather: To damn cold, with a chance of frostbite. Yay to us folks living in the Midwest!

Wind and rain all outside. Put me right out for an ill-timed nap.

Hopefully it can do the same for me when I decide to actually go to bed, and then stop. Because I really hate rain in December.

It's in the 70s and humid as **** in Baton Rouge, LA. Gotta love it. Two days ago it was in the 30s and raining. Now, I'm wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and flip flops

Yeah, I thought I had gotten used to the cold weather when I was in Kentucky when I felt how humid it was, but it's really humid here.

When are you moving down to the balmy Twin Cities?

We should talk about the plan for observations. I can also set up some time in our afterschool program to give some variety to your experience & add hours to your overall experience.

edit: i have no idea why i posted that here. I will send you an email tomorrow

This thread is the whole reason, I even logged on today. I'm surprised it hasnt been more popular, considering the east coast is about to be crippled by snow. I'm in a winter weather warning right now. Currently in the 6-8" range but earlier they were saying we could see a foot. If it's anything like when I was younger and praying to have off from school...we'll get about an inch.

Snow blows when you get older and have to drive and shovel the house. School already ended too so no snow days. Grrrr.

Same storm expected to reach NYC. All I'm hoping is that it does not **** up my trip back home next week

Yup I'm in the same general area. They are saying a foot in a half in a day which will be a record in the DC Metro area. I just wanted to buy a rack of ribs at Giant but decided to give up because the line was to the back of the store because people here freak out whenever it snows, although over a foot here will take at least a week to clear all the roads.

I am snowed in. I would say somewhere around 14 inches right now this is crazy. It's still coming down harder than a mofo too. Cool to look at it sucks at the same time.

Still no sign of snow in North Jersey. Should be coming within an hour or two. Enough time to go the supermarket to stock up on some food/junk food for the weekend. I kind of wanted to go shopping but oh well.
