Guidos are the epitome of what is wrong with modern society. They are on the lowest rung of the evolutionary chain. In fact, Id rather socialize with a chimpanzee then a Guido. They are the ******* worst creatures to ever walk the Earth. If anyone had any sense, they would be lined up and exterminated like cattle in a slaughterhouse.

Twin Peaks is almost more than just a TV show, It was an event. It would be higher on my list but it was only 2 seasons + a movie. Though now that I think of it Undeclared is probably shorter than Twin Peaks and it is quite high on my list, so I just contradicted myself.

I had an English professor who was a huge fan. I always meant to watch it. Also, there is going to be a lack of My So-Called Life on here, and that is going to be saddening. In fact, I bet 90% of the shows on this list will have aired in the last 10 years.

RE: Playmakers:I forgot about that show! Oh man, all of my friends were so into that show. Stupid NFL and their threats to ESPN.

They got nervous when players like Mike Vick AKA Ron Mexico passed their urinalyses after being caught with a camouflaged bong with pot residue on it in an airport, oh yeah! inject clean urine directly into the bladder, now why didnt I think of that??

BTW I loved Playmakers, too close to pro FB reality. Contrastingly is Friday Night Lights still on the air b/c it's very different from Texas HS FB reality? B/C it is very different.... just asking.

Back to the thread, picking 15 with poignant commentary:

The Sopranos: Best thesis on Good & Evil I've ever seen on the boob tube
South Park: They're going into a 13th season for a good reason, most outrageous social commentary
Saturday Night Live: The early ones were classics, from 1976 on, no other venue has introduced more major actors to feature filmdom
Dexter: His inner monologue narration with its puns & wry humor does it for me
Twilight Zone/Night Gallery: Best series transitioning from the B&W era, N.G> followed without losing quality; ended when genius TV writer Serling died of premature cardiac event in his 40s, RIP
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Its unique Buffyspeak dialect mimicked nationwide by every HS girl, Josh Whedon's best career effort
The Simpsons: Often imitated, never equaled, winding down now
It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia: Nothing makes me LOL harder
The West Wing: Aaron Sorkin wrote the best dialog since Tennessee Williams
House: House & Wilson are Don Quixote & Sancho Panza reincarnated & wittier too
Monty Python's Flying Circus: UK outrageous humor broke the boundaries, blazed the trail for New Comedy
Twin Peaks: Great Lynch/Scott whodunit soap opera
X-Files: Paranoia will destroy ya, but I Want to Believe
Firefly: Space western Whedon wanted to do before Buffy went meteoric bigtime, only lasted one season on SyFy
Seinfeld: Larry David got the max laughs possible from not very likable New Yorkers

So, The Shield is like Homicide: Life on the Street and The Wire? Go ahead and explain that.

The Shield is nothing like them -- it was pretty unique. Chiklis as Sgt. Vick Mackey was great in the 1st season, won an Emmy, then it petered out into the Just Another Crooked Cop Show with all their stereotypes.

Speaking of that genre, howzabout the 2 best in the 80s from semi-genius Stephen Bochco, Hill St. Blues & hospital show St. Elsewhere, the later NYPD Blue was just plain schlock by comparison.

Did he do the short-lived Crime Story too? It was set in 1962 (like Mad Men) & was on for only a yr, had Dennis Farina in it as an FBI guy chasing organized crime wiseguys. He had a 1983 series (canceled after half a season) about a minor league baseball team & its players' lives called Bay City Blues that was actually pretty good, it dealt with controversial stuff like steroids & blazed the trail for Playmakers.

Yeah no. The Shield was absolutely nothing like a standard order crooked cop drama and the final three seasons were absolutely brilliant. As for the little thing about shows being good before my time, they were a hell of a lot more tame and written far less intricately so while there were some shows (like those you mentioned, The Wonder Years, etc.) there were a hell of a lot more bad shows.

WKRP In Cincinnati!! Late 70s too-hip-to-grip sitcom, I ******* loved it !!

Loni Anderson as the blonde bombshell got the media attn. but Jan Smithers as the sexy sec'y gave all the guys serious wood. Loni later became Mrs. Burt Reynolds for awhile, she & Jan had all the good one-liner jokes. Howard Hesseman was in a House episode recently as a dying patient, he was DJ Dr. Johnny Fever -- Hesseman was a George Carlinlike performance artist in the counterculture drive-in B-movie Billy Jack (nobody remembers that). He was the only "star" from it, the rest of the cast are answers to trivia questions now. they had a (token black) DJ Venus Flytrap too. It was supposed to be about the drug-crazed days of early FM in the 70s but the censors sanitized all the scripts for public primetime consumption, too bad. It captured the 70s zeitgeist better than the nostalgic That 70s Show IMO.

Bosom Buddies ripped off the classic 50s film Some Like It Hot, if it were done today instead of the 70s they would have drag queens as guest stars.

Here's a blast from the past nominee, 1980 in fact, 5-star ***** primetime drama that was a spinoff from, of all shows, Mary Tyler Moore: Lou Grant, starring Ed Asner as an LA Newspaper editor. (Note to mods: this is NOT a political post!) It was forced into cancellation by CBS after 2 yrs. in '81 through political pressure for being ultra-liberal & criticizing the Reagan Administration, nobody believed it b/c of low ratings. No show covered more controversial subjects better, & Ed Asner was an underrated great actor.

Suzanne Somers did have a great pair but c'mon, man. They had Playboy's back in the day if I wanted to stare at a bare set, I didn't have to watch that crap.

Suzanne Somers was awful! She tried to do a hwy. robbery holdup on the then #1-rated show for triple or quadruple her salary b/c she thought those mammaries were the key to the success of it, not true. She walked off the set & trashed her showbiz career, now she's doing stairmaster or exercise equipment paid ads that air at 3 AM. All her talent was in those jugs. The late great John Ritter (Tex Ritter's son) was the comic genius of the show, & when they had TV immortal Don Knotts in his polyester disco shirt as the landlord he was hilarious!

Just for grins compare a pic of Don Knotts at age 65 or so to one of Mick Jagger, they could've been separated at birth......

Also, i'm sure people that enjoy watching Entourage (and there's a ton of 'em) don't watch it for the top notch acting and cinematography and all that jazz you keep dissing it for.

For once I agree with you. South Park does absolutely nothing for me. I find it difficult to make it through an episode, sometimes even clips. Its just so god damned annoying. Want satire? Watch The Daily Show or The Colbert Report. The "social commentary" that South Park offers is frustratingly one sided, especially the political aspects. I dont know, I dont find the show to be funny or particularly skilled at communicating a message...they just beat it into you over and over again.

I don't care if it doesn't have top notch acting and I never said anything about cinematography. Passable acting works and only two actors are even remotely passable. Plus the show literally goes around in a giant circle.

The Daily Show is more of a personal thing. I find it to be hilarious, and not annoying like South Park. You are right, they are both one sided, but The Daily Show isnt lauded as some sort of great social reflection like South Park is, its viewed as Stewart's personal inflection on things. On South Park: It was absolutely amazing in the first 8 seasons; perfect more or less. Pretty terrible after that, with a few exceptions.

On Entourage: It's entertaining, but I don't think it's any more than 'good.' There are 3-4 entertaining characters that drive the show and, as someone mentioned, the story is always the same.

We need more Venture Brothers love on here.

On Colbert and Daily Show: They're both great for different reasons, and it's difficult to apply them to this thread. They have such a gimme formula, they really aren't 'shows' in the way that something like South Park is.

Colbert is great because he's hilarious.

The Daily Show is mildly funny, but more importantly, Stewart is the best political commentator on American TV. He would leave anyone at any other "news" source crying and spitting up on themselves in a debate (ain't that right, Will Kristol, you goddamn douche?).

Yeah, I do like HBO shows The Sopranos, The Wire, Generation Kill, Deadwood, and Entourage (not nearly as much now). The only show from HBO that I pay attention to now, however, is Entourage and that is based mostly for Jeremy Piven, one of my favorite underrated actors, as Ari Gold.

The one animated show I thought was continually solid throughout its entire run was King of the Hill. While I didn't watch it regularly, I would tune in occasionally or watch a rerun if I stumbled across it on tv and always enjoyed what I saw. About Futurama, it never did anything for me. I gave it a chance and it just wasn't my thing. Same with South Park and Family Guy, which I gave a chance as well.

i said it in IRC and im saying it again.

APS is canadian. i totally understand him hating on South Park

For once I agree with you. South Park does absolutely nothing for me. I find it difficult to make it through an episode, sometimes even clips. Its just so god damned annoying. Want satire? I dont know, I dont find the show to be funny or particularly skilled at communicating a message...they just beat it into you over and over again.
Hilarious. You knock South Park for being politically one-sided, yet use The Daily Show and The Colbert Report as counter-examples? I actually think South Park is pretty much in the middle of the political spectrum while the other two shows are so far one-sided that it's almost sickening.

I was surprised at the list, especially with South Park being #1.

And speaking of shows not doing anything for you, I can't get into IASIP and that made the top 10, where it beat out both Futurama and The Sopranos. That was surprising.

It's so clear to tell the age group of the average poster here based on the top 25.

That's what I said, more or less, in one of my posts.

South Park is muuuuuuuuuuuuch funnier and better written than Entourage.

For once I agree completely with Brodeur.

South Park may have lost some of its edge after 13 seasons, same thing with the Simpsons after 20 yrs, it happens. But at its zenith no comedy series did better parodies of celebrities with real zingers like Barbra Mechastreisand, the Paris Hilton *****-Off Contest, debunking fake psychics like John Edwards, lampooning the Mormon Church by series creators drunk LDSer Trey Parker or the Jews by stoned Jew Matt Stone .... South Park is an appropriate best show, I'm glad it won the poll.

Since we're all remembering shoulda-been nominated shows too late, how about Moonlighting with Cybill Shepherd & a young, pre-action film star Bruce Willis, when he actually had hair on his head? It was a great detective series self parody where they broke the stage 4th Wall to speak directly to the audience, great stuff with brilliant writing. Shepherd said doing the show & working with Willis when he was a wild man gave her daily anxiety attacks but it was the best TV she had ever done.

BTW I saw that Dexter finished season 4 on Showtime this wk, anyone know when Season 4 will be released on DVD? This summer?

Can't find anything definitive about it yet, but Amazon does have the first three seasons up there for under 20 bucks a season, which is a pretty kickass deal. I might buy the third season so I can rewatch the entire series sometime before season 5.

The fact that Seinfeld didn't win discredits this list.

The first and last seasons of Seinfeld discredits that point.

I don't like seinfeld so have no problems with it not topping this list. It was amusing but not once do I think I actually laughed a lot of snickers, but it was just meh to me.

I'm sure I will get ripped for saying this but I found the cast around Seinfeld funny but Seinfeld him self not at all funny.

Seinfeld is easily the most comedically gifted of the cast and that was obvious in Curb this season.

Could that be because he's a ******* comedian?

Yes, but in the show I think a lot of the other characters got the great punchlines. Jerry's best moment was the description of "the magic loogie".
