Shanahan on track to make more than $50 million from Redskins (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/01/01/shanahan-on-track-to-make-more-than-50-million-from-redskins/)

"Some league insiders say that free-agent coach Mike Shanahan would like to get another suitor to the table in order to drive up his leverage with the Redskins.

But even if he can't shake any other team out of the bushes, we're told that Shanahan will still make more than $50 million under the deal that the Redskins have ready for Shanahan's signature.

We assume it's a five-year contract, with an average salary in excess of $10 million per year.

The Redskins deal, if ultimately accepted by Shanahan, will make him the highest-paid coach in NFL history."

Snyder belongs in MLB where you can buy championships, he needs a great franchise builder not a guy like Shanny who is a good coach but isn't good at evaluating talent. The Redskins are in a horrible spot, their best players are aging and the only young guys on the team who are worth their pay are Orakpo, Fred Davis and maybe Rocky McIntosh. The entire team needs a youth infusion, the Redskins should've really looked into hiring a franchise builder like the Dolphins and Falcons did 2 years ago.

The Redskins are going nowhere quick.

well its not like how much he pays the coach impacts the salary cap of the team. Its not my money, I like Shanahan, I dont care how much snyder spends to bring in a good coach...with that said,

yeah i agree. even though there is a salary cap, big market teams should have the best (which means most expensive) coaching staffs, scouts, etc. it'd be ridiculous to not spend the crazy amount of money the Skins make on the front office.

i know when brian burke went to be the GM for the toronto maple leafs, he expanded the scouting department. its just smart to have an edge even with the salary cap. snyder is doing all he can to make them a better football team.

I think he'll go after Peppers. Gotta make the biggest splash right? Throw some cash at a pro bowl DE and have a monstrous d-line of Peppers, Haynesworth, Carter and Orakpo all in there....crazy.

The thing is coaches don't count against the salary cap, they need a major revamp personnel wise though.

I think they're going after the wrong guy, they need a builder not a finisher, Shanny came in and finished the deal with Elway but the team got progressively worse under his control, in fact he went 24-24 the last 3 seasons in Denver even with Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall, he doesn't value running backs highly and his eye for talent on the defensive side of the ball is awful, he was responsible for that mess of a defense that was in Denver and the only reason it was even serviceable for some seasons is because he was taking the sloppy seconds from the Browns defensive line.

The Redskins went in the completely wrong direction here because now Mike Shanahan is going to be responsible for building a team from scratch, the offensive line, running backs, quarter back, receivers, linebackers and secondary all need talented youth players that currently aren't on the roster and even the defensive line needs a ton of help the only good young player they've got is Brian Orakpo.

Why would the skins go after Peppers? Both our defensive ends (carter/orakpo) are in double digit sacks this year.

Can never have too many pass rushers, plus, Snyder will probably want to make a big splash in FA as always when he makes a big splash with a new coach. Plus, no cap probably....why not go for it?

Well, Snyder did hire former Bucs GM Bruce Allen I believe last week.

Shanny wasn't brought in to be the final say on personnel decisions, although I'm certain he'll have input.

Snyder's also looking at bringing in Andy Reid to be the OC, Thumper!!LOL

Ridiculous contract but what else can you expect from Snyder. He just isn't worth that kind of money and if he has a large say in the draft, it will turnout to be a disaster.

who gives a @#$ what an owner pays a coach. its his money and has nothing to do with the salary cap or the rest of the team.

typical nfc east ridiculous exaggeration of the truth...both thomas and kelly have shown signs of being productive players when given the chance and actually have plays called that target them. campbell has stunted their development because he focuses on his primary option and dumps off immediately but with a good qb/playcalling you will see a change in performance. at linebacker, rocky mcintosh is one of the best young outside linebackers in the nfl. i will hold strong to that. he has grown tremendously in the past two years and has no real flaws in his game.

the secondary is hard to gauge. dhall, rogers, landry, and horton are all young and all have talent but blache does not operate a defense that makes the best of his players.

and when talking about good young players lets not forget fred davis either....and colt brennan of course ;)

The best part of bringing Mike in as the HC is Kyle being the OC and potential future HC. Regarded as the brightest offensive mind in the game and only 30 years old.

This is only the beginning.

Next their going to offer two 1st for Brandon Marshall, then they'll offer a 2nd and 5th for Antonio Cromartie, + sign the biggest FA name available no matter if that's a position of need or not.

Shanny Will not only have an oppurtunity to infuse the skins with "his guys" from denver. Minus marshall mcdaniels doesnt play shannys guys like hillis, sheffler and others. And i can all but guarentee marshall is as good as gone. and the skins will have the ability to get marshall

I will bet top dollar the Redskins take a running back in the first two rounds to go along with a quarterback, the problem Shanahan will have is that he won't really be able to put Colt and Campbell through their paces to see what he has in his QB stable, and imo, the tape won't be impressive enough for Campbell to hold his job.
