View Full Version : CJ Spiller or Dez Bryant...if you had to take one, who and why?

I've been reading so much fluff about Spiller and Bryant that my head is spinning. If you were a GM and you needed a RB AND WR but could only choose one, which one do you choose? Which one is the more dynamic player and would contribute more to your team in the future?

Spiller sounds like a Felix Jones type to me, while Dez is starting to sound more and more like a Brandon Marshall.

Give me Bryant. He's more of a BA and will be his QBs best friend...I'm happy that a few are starting to pick up on the fact that he's a top 5 player in this draft...arguably top 3.

CJ Spiller IMO pays off earlier dividends for a team and is a major contributor as a rookie.

Sometimes even the most physically gifted WRs take a couple of years to adjust to the pro game.

But if my team lacks a true #1 WR, then obviously I go with Dez Bryant.

If my team is basically set at WR and needs another playmaker on offense, I go with CJ.

It kind of depends on the team, but I'd take Bryant 9 times out of 10.

After seeing what Chris Johnson did to the Titans, I would go with CJ.

Edit: not trying to say CJ will be nearly as good as the Chris Johnson, but there is definite potential to be a 1500+ yard rusher.

I'd honestly take Spiller.

More explosive threat, and a better value because he can potentially play three positions: returner, receiver, and back.

At his best, Spiller has the potential to be the next Marshall Faulk. At his best, Dez Bryant will be the next Chad Ochocinco. Who would you rather have?

DEZ BRYANT.
i absolutely love him as a prospect. Big,strong, yards after catch, good hands, runs decent routes. For me he is a Top10 pick right now. If he can run 4.3X at the combine he will become a Top 5 prospect in my book

CJ Spiller
How much hype would he have if Chris Johnson didn't have that year in 09. Don't get me wrong, i really like him as a propect, but more of a Top 15-20pick.
To be a Top 10 RB (everydown back) you have to block very good in my books. A part of Spillers game which need a lot of work. Another part is the durability problem. A RB with that kind of speed will mostly get hit pretty hart (or run by them like CJ2K;) )

For the Bucs i take Dez Bryant over CJ Spiller everday in the week and twice on Sunday.
But when you have a team which is pretty mich set up on offense, which can allow Spiller to touch the Ball only 12-16 times a game. He should be the pick.

Bryant easily... he's a legit top 5 pick and possesses everything you look for in a #1 WR.

Spiller has a ton of question marks, and is more of a mid-late 1st rounder to me.

Give me Spiller. I think he's polished and will contribute right away. Receivers take some time to develop, and though I like Bryant as a top 10 talent I do have some questions about him....more so than Spiller at this point.

Dez Bryant, no question. It's much harder to find a good WR than it is to find a good RB.

that's a fair point

I probably wouldn't have drafted Crabtree either... call me a cynic but I want wide receivers to run fast.

by the way CJ Spiller has 30 career TD, Bryant has 27... and they were big gainers - Spiller has more TD of 50 yards or more than any1 in NCAA history.

You're very adamant about this, aren't you? Watch Dez Bryant bit...get enlightened...He's the best offensive skill position player in this draft, and it's really not close.

Spiller's a close second because of his speed.

ill take spiller because he plays the easier position to make an impact at the next level, top WRs vanish all the time

For most teams I'd take Bryant over Spiller and not even hesitate.

Only teams like Minnesota who have an established back and could use the type of player that Spiller is would make any real sense. Can you imagine having to defend a team with Rice, Berrian, Harvin and Spiller on the field, you could even throw Peterson out there with that group, that would be beyond explosive it would be ridiculous. Unless TJ was the QB, then it would just be lots of really fast guys running neat patterns and a QB throwing it away or to the wrong one ;)

Dez Bryant is not slow. He has a real good chance to run 4.4 something. I would be very surprised if he didn't. Even if he doesn't, he still has good straight line speed and is quick in and out of his cuts. Speeds not an issue with him.

Knowing the life expectancy of rbs and everything else being pretty equal give me Bryant.

Not just speaking for my own team, if I could take any of the two for any team in the NFL I take Bryant and would not look back.

Now more than ever we are seeing that finding a quality RB is not that hard to acquire. I do not know how good Spiller will be, but finding a star WR imo is more difficult than finding that starting RB.

Have to agree as much as a Bryant and Crabs out wide would get every 9er fan hard Spiller fills a bigger need.

In terms of overall value, I would take Dez every day. But it depends on team needs. For the Vikes, give us Bryant so we can dump Berrian!

A lot of red flags on this guy i think. Might have to wait a bit for a WR to be selected.

Dez Bryant. Not a question. I like Spiller, but Bryant is much better IMO.

Spiller. Here's why. Although he will be a complimentary runner, Spiller should get 15 carries a game. He's a great receiver out of the backfield so he could get 5-7 touches in the passing game and maybe 5 more returning kicks. So with Spiller you get around 25 chances to get a big play. Dez Bryant will probably get 5-7 passes a game which projects to somewhere between 80-112 receptions for the year. Character issues also favor Spiller over Bryant.

Dez Bryant... Browns need a true #1 receiver more than they need a stud RB. I would rather take my chances with Harrison the way he finished the season and get someone to compliment him (maybe Westbrook?) and add on Dez. Bring in McNabb and our offense would look decent actually.

I know the topic here is which of the two you would take but that seems high for Cleveland when you could probably get a Joe Haden or an Eric Berry.

Bryant. Spiller's a great playmaker, but I think BRyant will make more of an impact on the game than spiller, who'll be splitting carries while Bryant won't leave the field. That and adding Bryant to the gmen's WRs would give us one of the sickest WR corps. in the league with Nicks, Bryant, Steve Smith, Mario and Barden being developed.

Spiller.

Gore + Spiller = explosive tandem, combined with the impact he would make on kickoff and punt return game makes it an easy decision.

bryant guys are a little bit in denial. If he had 4.4 speed he would have ran it. the hamstring injury was an excuse. He's not Andre Johnson. He's Sidney Rice maybe?

Bryant over and over.

And that's not a knock on Spiller.

The difference between the two, IMO, is that Bryant could be the focal point of any offense and Spiller needs a certain type of system to fit in.

Spiller's a great talent, someone that a team would love to have, and a great teammate by most measures, but I'd be upset if my GM drafted him in the top 10. I wouldn't question Bryant going top three. He's that good.

My own talent rankings (which don't mean much):
1. Suh
2. Bryant
3. Berry
4. McCoy

...somewhere in the 15-20 range- Spiller...

Yes, I have him that high. Ahead of Berry and McCoy. And I actually think there's a decent gap between the top two and McCoy.

No question he's the top offensive player in the draft. And from what I've seen, it's not close.

And who cares if he didn't run a 4.4? Anquan Boldin, Steve Largent, Jerry Rice, and most of the other GOATs say hi. We read waaaaaaay too much into the combine. If the combine adjusts your rankings more than a few spots, you're putting too much stock into it.

Exactly. Spiller might not even be a full time running back until 3-4 years in, if he's even a full time runner.

Bryant, there are so many RB's in the league/draft that it's insane... I'd rather take the best WR in a draft over the best RB unless it was an insane gap in talent.
